I am not sure what all of you are fussing about. It is new/upgraded/better than our current Palms
Either "we" (and I use the word "we" lightly) are just really wanting Palm to be #1 so badly that we knock down every little thing that Palm does
or
"we" (again used lightly) are not that observant in what actually happens with devices/hardware/software that get called "new". Even after 1 - 2 - 3 years down the road
The iPhone as it made existance - Same form factor with minor spec bumps with exception of iPhone 4
iPhone 2g - Sep 5, 2007
4gig/8gig storage
620mhz (underclocked to 412mhz)
128 MB Memory
2MP Static Cam
16gig storage version release Feb 5, 2008
3.5" 480X320
iPhone 3g - July 11, 2008
8gig/16gig storage (SAME STORAGE)
620mhz (underclocked to 412mhz) (SAME PROCESSOR)
128 MB Memory (SAME MEMORY)
2MP Static Cam (SAME CAM)
3.5" 480X320 (SAME SCREEN)
It now can do 3G
Now everyone can remember the Palm Treo - Same form factor - PalmOS/WinMo - Did it for years
Android Powered devices - Why even keep track - New phone every day it feels like. But i am sure we can all agree that the majority of them are the SAME specs just different brand with slight different layout.
Palm Pre - June 2009
8gig Storage
600mhz (underclokced to 500mhz)
256MB Memory
3MP Enhanced fixed focus
3.1" 320X480
16gig storage verizon (6 months after Sprint?)
Palm Pre 2
16gig/+++more??
1ghz
256/384/512 MB Memory??? (I would guess 512 MB)
Camera ????
3.1" (resolution could be more but prob not)
Honestly, if you look at history and the direction that it has gone. What we KNOW about the Palm Pre 2, it actually has a pretty "healthy" spec bump.
I could not have written this any better. This Pre 2 should really be for non-plus phones. Those who have a plus phone.. Could choose to get it or not. Most people are going to get the pre2, they were just looking for something different.. thats all.
Posted by Strikerage on Fri, 15 Oct 2010 5:48 pm EDT
all those stats are fine to compare, but you gotta admit that they needed to add at least an autofocus camera to the phone, and definitely 4G (at least if it comes on Sprint).
The formfactor being the same is fine, although most people want a larger screen too. What ticks people off is that Palm could have done a few more things... just a few more.... And the Palm Pre 2 could have been seen as a proper upgrade to the Pre,but as of right now,wth what is known, people simply see a larger processor.
And when that is the only significant spec bump, and when geeks are the only ones that even care about processor speeds, that's not enough.
Geeks already overclock their Pre's to that speed, and although it is better to get their without melting your device, it's something most budget-minded geeks will live with.
Wow me Palm.... Don't make me go 'meh'... They simply can't afford to have this stagnant mindset (i guess with HP, it's debatable whether they can 'afford' it or not).

What's with the Epic-envy. If anything the Evo is a way better phone at a way beter price. Not that I'm jumping ship just yet. I have ben keeping my options open and doing my homework. The only thing the Epic has over the Evo...better accessories.
Posted by joe1blue on Fri, 15 Oct 2010 1:18 pm EDT
i cant see why anyone would want this pre 2 when all the other pre's get updated to 2.0 than what is the point of spending your money on this bull crap phone with minor spec bumps i will just go out and get an evo or WP7 or something that has a biger screen with a front facing camra so i can do video chat with a few friends tbhis phone is behind in tech why bother releasing it the pre plus failed so why put out another pre plus thats what im calling it im so mad i waited this long just to get this phone pre plus!

The short answer for me is that I like the current phone and don't care that the changes are only "spec bumps." I like the new flat screen. I am guessing they have improved the keyboard and the slider mechanism. I like that I can use my current case, touchstone chargers, and car mount. I can't get the better hardware with an OS upgrade on my current Pre+.
As an earlier poster has already noted, the strategy of sticking with a design and releasing annual spec bumps has worked very well for the iPhone. It can work as well for the Pre. I am one of many people who don't want a slab design with a virtual keyboard. There are a lot of us our here and we are the potential customers for this phone. The phone has a lot of potential and HP has the ability to market it to a broader audience that wants what this phone has to offer.
"the strategy of sticking with a design and releasing annual spec bumps has worked very well for the iPhone"
Agree, but you have to remember that iPhone has a huge captive audience - how many "new converts" is iPhone getting? If Palm had a huge captive audience as well, this strategy might work for them as well. The fact is, they have to win over tons of new customers, and to get lots of people from all different walks of smartphones will take choice, not "same old, same old".
Posted by digorykirk on Fri, 15 Oct 2010 2:05 pm EDT
I think we agree. There are two points for me. For current users, the spec bump is generally a good thing and consistent with other phone strategies. The second is that there is a huge potential for HP/Palm to build a captive audience for this phone. Though, it may not ever get to the cult following of the iPhone. I don't think that we have seen what this phone could do in sales and market share if it were properly marketed by HP and the carriers.

Seriously, it's most of you that underwhelm me. Everything is a spec bump on every phone! Just ask Blackberry & iPhone users! Y'all were praising the "elegant form factor" a year ago and now you're complaining because Palm doesn't jump on Google's bandwagon. They need the Pre's design for the average business user (& with doc editing & webOS 2.0 around the corner, this is a large open market). Is it bleading edge hardware? No! Is Blackberry?! If you want a SuperPhone (which is not what most corp IT depts supply) then wait until CES! Do you really think Palm had the resources befor the HP purchase to develop both the Pre2 & a Superphone?! They were barely treading water. If we get a superphone at CES, it will be the result of an aggressive timetable.
Finally, while I know the Palm fanbase is passionate, let's be realistic... we only make up 5% of the marketshare & HPalm will need to appeal to a lot more than us to be in the race!

I mean seriously, no one is handcuffed here and I think it's saying a lot about the mods as well as the captains that trolls are allowed to run rampant on P|C. Try goind to A|C and posting "HTC sux and there phones are battery wasting garbage!" and see if you aren't 'insta-banned'. Even worse for TiPB and TUAW.
Truly a disappointment lately. Maybe I see how PIC is doing these days...

At first I was a little disappointed, until I realized that I wanted a huge candy bar slab not for myself, but for all the sheep out there that buy those first and foremost and scoff at my phone cause it looks like the other seven replacements I'd had...although I'd have appreciated a front facing camera and bigger screen and battery, I am still with palm cause I like the system and the original form factor....we need to stop worrying about what everyone else would like....now I'm worried that Sprint may not carry it...
This is just ridiculous... the name of the phone is Palm pre2, why do people think that its going to look much different than the pre. I remember awhile ago members was asking for an updated phone to the pre. In fact, they were asking for the pre2.
Remember choices.. either get it, or not. Thank you HP/Palm.(:

Hey web os is great but people who keep repeating the iphone only did minor spec bumps in it's first releases. This is true that was then, this is now the game has changed. The iphone was built solid unlike the pre. The Iphone sold like gang busters they couldn't sell enough unlike the pre. The Iphone has people begging for it to be released on there carrier. Palm needs to impress get there name back in the game this phone will receive little buzz and little critical acclaim. This phone shows a lack of innovation and will not attract a bigger user base. Some of the palm faithful will stay and some will head to win 7 andriod and the iphone. Sorry some people don't want to face it but this is a fail. The reason most of us bought a pre was because we didn't want and Iphone. Now people use the apple does it this way logic. Well good for palm will see how the apple did it this way works. P.s. want palm to succeed web os is the best mobile os so put it on something great.

Definitely. We should really get one of the TEN "innovative" glass screened, 1ghz, 512mb, 8-16GB, JUST released Windows Phone 7 devices because they have the superi...waaait, a second...
No.. didn't see it - was too busy looking at the Pre2. I can't wait to have that the baby in my hands already. As the OP stated_ out with the old and in with the new.(:-)

I carried a Palm Pilot and Nokia for 3+ years, then Treo for 3+ years, then rushed out to get the pre on opening day and had hoped to carry it for 3+ years. All my gripes with the phone are really minor, the size, physical landscape keyboard, touchstone (how have the other phones not picked up on this?), webOS, and ability to customize everything on this phone to my tastes are why I still have this phone. When I show my friends the pictures I take with the pre they don't believe I actually took them with my phone. I'm not a fan of the easy to crack/spider/scratch plastic screen, the belly button that lost its silver paint, the battery life, or the smoke that comes from my pocket when it heats up:) The thing that ticked me off when I got the phone was that these were so minor and most of the problems could be easily fixed with a slight hardware bump. Enter the slight hardware bump... Hopefully another phone I can really carry for 3+ years. Bonus - I won't have get rid of the touchstones I have everywhere. IMO, if they included a touchstone with every new phone there would be a much bigger following, its the thing that really differentiates this phone from every other smart phone on the market.

dumb as ever. Why do these keep being put on precentral?
So, thank god that HP/Palm not making any smaller screen than the pre. Good. I always believe that the pixi screen is too small.:)
