Pssst, Best Buy Canada: the TouchPad doesn't run Android 60

by Derek Kessler Thu, 14 Jul 2011 3:47 pm EDT

We get it. It's confusing, what with webOS 3.0 on the HP TouchPad which looks a lot like the iPad, and Android also at 3.0 with Honeycomb, and the BlackBerry PlayBook running QNX that looks a lot like webOS 3.0. It's enough to get anybody's brain all spun around. But maybe you should check, I don't know, the rest of the page to make sure the ad you're sending out to everybody in Canada is correct, m'kay? M'kay.

epic fail

I say Keep It. They might be able to sell more.

If any Canadians are thinking about buying the touchpad and the accessories and reading this, compare futureshop and bestbuy. You can get the charging dock for $10 cheaper at Futureshop. But the keyboard is $10 more expensive at Futureshop! lol

Whatever it's going to take to sell it i guess... but I still don't think people would pay $520 even for a 16GB android tablet.

I write this mistake off because it was made in Canada.

At least Grandpa is smiling and they got the baby pounding on the screen to touch his face. So precious!

The only baby I want to see in a TouchPad advertisment is if they are going with my idea and doing a "Its time to cut the cord!" advertisment to show they don't need wires to sync and charge.

Come on Best Buy!

Canada has funny looking old people.

But they're happy old people.

with free health care...

Nothing is ever free.

Keep forgetting to pay my sun and oxygen bills! Thank god I paid the gravity one in time though... Dodged a bullet there!

It's not free (as taht it doesn't cost) but it's free of charge-per-use (like a flatrate). Also people who can't afford an insurance get it for free without having to be afraid of doctors not willing to accept them...

In total this kind of system generates greater benefits for all and even is CHEAPER than the US-System, because people actually go to the doctor when they feel bad and don't wait until it's too late (and expensive...).

If the system is locked so only legal residents of Canada can take advantage of it, you are safe from the abuse we have here in the USA.

Yeah as long as you don't mind waiting 6 months in agonizing pain for knee replacement surgery. It's free, but you get what you pay for.

Simply amazing!!!!

I was recently in Best Buy and they said the same thing, it has Android.

I think it is a problem that I know more about the Touchpad then anybody that sells it. Wow.

I am a consultent that works closely with troubled retailers. If I was HP I would hire me.

I went into Best Buy the day it was "officially" released and they had an older guy there as the HP rep with a WebOS shirt. By the time I left, I had basically trained him on how to use WebOS and what to say are the benefits of justtype, true multi-tasking, "conversations." He wouldn't give me the cool Nike WebOS golf shirt though.

Very disappointing how this has all played out. I am (was starting tomorrow) a first-day Sprint Pre- owner. I look forward to enjoying WebOS 5.2 when I return in 24 months.

Off for a sabbatical on the dark side. . .

Please still be here when I return - or I won't return. :-) Thanks everyone!

I know what ya on 5.2. Lets hope they are here to make that one.

I wouldn't hire you, can't stand how you spell consultant. Don't feel bad, I wouldn't hire myself either.

I would hire myself, but then I'd probably just tell people all the tricks about webOS and what all the best free apps are. Then talk about Homebrew forever and the various feeds, and then realize I've totally lost them and watch as they go pick up an iPad and keep a safe distance from me.

Then I'd go back to using my Pre- minus and ignoring the webOS 3.0 Touchpad that can't even support some of the cool features that were in my now retired 1.4.5 OS version.

... but I digress.

It runs Android Honeycomb like nothing else.

Honestly, it's an interesting thought experiment if you think about it. If you informed people that the touchpad was just a different version of Android with it's own unique app store, I wonder what the general consensus would be. It's certainly more intuitive than Honeycomb. I recently got to play with a Galaxy Tab 10.1 and I was shocked at how terrible it was to navigate and use.

HA HA. Maybe not a total fail.... maybe HP could use this to their advantage because android is popular.

Only after they get it home and realize how much better webOS is.

yeah but even if they think this is Android, why would they pay $520 for this when they can get an Android tablet with HDMI out, GPS, dual camera for cheaper?

HPdroid 3.0 Webcomb?????

This is why maybe HP should seriously consider launching their own retail stores. (What happened to those Palm Stores?)

They do in South America if I remember correctly.

Well it probably could, I'll wager someone out there manages to do this (they got it running on a pre, right?)

Maybe now they'll start to fly off the shelves?

i kid.

Surprisingly enough they do mention in the ad that the TouchPad has "Next-level multi-tasking with HP webOS." Least they got it on there...somewhere.

Seriously? How does something like this get to print? I guess I shouldn't be surprised, when their pre-order product page said: "App Store Compatibility: Android Market"...

They've updated it now so it says:
"App Store Compatibility None " hahahaha.

Sounds like truth in advertising to me.

Okay, so when I arrived home tonight I received my copy. (The wife actually said while reading the flyers: "hey, have you seen this new HP tablet?")

I flipped the page to see page 2 of the add, and noticed the pricing. You can see it above as well, they've set it back to the original iPad-matching 519.99 for 16Gb and 619.99 for 32Gb, even though their pre-order product page shows the reduced pricing of 449.99/549.99 respectively.

This is silly. Not only do you mess-up the copy for a supposedly feature-device, but you can't even create the ad with your current pricing?

Epic fail..

On second thought..

Was killing some time at the local Best Buy this weekend, and noticed a small line of people waiting to test-out the Galaxy tabs they had on display. Not a single person at the Touchpad booth. Maybe now they'll actually attract some crowds.. lol

I had the exact opposite in Texas last week, about 3-4 people waiting to try the TouchPad (they had 2, but one was dead).

Maybe HP should hire some of us that know and believe in webOS to work in the stores on weekends. Here's my sign now in case HP is listening.

Will Work
4
TouchPad

This must be what they meant by #1+.

Hey, the good news is that HP may get a free spot next week as well in the Best Buy Canada weekly flyer because of the mistake!

They did not do that! No wonder Best Buy is clueless and pushing everything but.....

Since it's now running Honeycomb, will Sprint now pick it up?

Sidenote: Will people stop referring things as "epic" please. It's not epic, it's stupid; like when you say epic.

Epic rant!

This ad makes me laugh. Oh Can-a-duh-er...doh!

Have any of you seen the ads for TouchPad (very much like the ones for Veer) where Manny Paquiao is in them? I think they are cool ads, but when his face comes across the screen it gives you the impression it has a rear camera. Also, he sings and I find myself wanting to download his strange song.

So sad. Shows that the sales reps dont care.

Yeah, i've noticed that too in all the TouchPad commercials. They really shouldn't be showing somebody looking through the thing. The logical assumption to make there is that is has a rear camera, making this functionality possible. Terrible advertising.

This surprises me not at all. When the Pre was first being launched, a Best Buy rep told me it ran Windows Mobile.

uhm, am i the only one who notices how ridiculously photoshopped that looks? if not a PS job then some sort of digital post-it note.

You mean how I blew up the little part so you could see it on the big screen? We have the original.

Worst post ever. Obviously they enhanced the small type so we could read it. Sometime I want to cry when I read these posts.

This is why they will always be America's hat.

Need to run Honeycomb on your webOS TouchPad? There's an app for that!

this just shows the relevance of webos and HP in the mobile spectrum. NOBODY cares. i love the software, that does not change the fact that it is being destroyed by HP and its horrid idea of how produce and release competitive technology on a competitive deadline has put it in the position to continually finish in 3rd or 4th place. this has caused Apple to continue to just laugh at them because they know that the only true competitor is being ruined and sunk by, apparently, stupidity and arrogance.

Stupidity and arrogance. Right on the head.

Sad.... in Amazon there is also Android 3.0 in the description. How the **** could that mistake be happen?

Amazon Germany (maybe Amazon UK too?)

Maybe it's me, but who uses Tablets anyway? I have a great laptop with multi-touch screen, converts to a tablet, viewable in daylight, intel processor, and runs Windows 7 and Linux easily. And like my Pre- it has a keyboard. And FireWire, SD slot, Express54 slot, eSATA, 3 USB2, and can dock to a media bay DVD-RW with DVI out. Am I missing something?? Yes! I'm missing a Pre3 on Sprint!

Tablets actually work very well "in the field", where a normal laptop will only run for 2-3 hours of use, while a tablet will handle an eight hour day. My Pre Plus will get me half the day with heavy use(continually testing WiFi for customers with huge houses up and down the stairs, from room to room).

That is the biggest problem with the fairly small size of the original Pre/Pre Plus/Veer/Pixi/Pixi Plus, where the battery is going to be smaller due to the phone size. A larger phone will allow for a larger battery.

What we really need is for carbon nanotube production to get going so all the great improvements can finally get here.

This! We just finished up an app for one of our larger clients for this very reason. They send their people out to manage certain company assets and laptops just wasn't cutting it for them.

I call bullsnot. I've worked 'in the field' writing detailed estimates at job locations. My car has a power inverter to charge up while traveling from one gig to the next. My convertible laptop has a great battery and there are optional battery slices for it albeit at a weight penalty. Or simply carry an extra battery. How the funk can anyone do productive work on a tablet? It's a media-consuming device, that is all. Unless you have monkeys for employees that only need to tick radio boxes on forms or similar. Just my opinion folks... Once you start adding keyboards to tablets, I still think a laptop or even netbook is a better option for portability and workability. Couple that with a battery operated printer and you're good to go, and go, and go. Been there, done that.

And yet our client just converted its entire system because the old one did not work for them. Call them "monkeys for employees" if that makes you feel better but they sure shelled out a nice chunk of money for us to change for our assistance in carrying out what THEY considered a necessary change.

Hey, I'm not complaining. If it's got the word "Android" on it, then more people will buy it because they're familiar with that OS.

I love Canada. I chalk this up to their great sense of humor.

Remember, the only difference between New Yorkers and Canadians is...
New yorkers say "A, *%*% you"
and
Canadians say "*%*% you, A"

I visited my local best buy (canada) and was happy to see a dedicated HP rep there who was actually fairly knowledgeable about the touchpad. I think it really shows how serious HP is about the touch pad. Clearly they know how much it is going to take to gain market share.

BestBuy has a correction listed on their weekly ad site:
"AD CORRECTION
HP TouchPad (16GB/32GB)
WebID:10173117/6
Please note that this tablet advertised on the front cover of the July 15 flyer runs using webOS, NOT Android 3.0 Honeycomb, as previously advertised."
