Public beta of webOS PDK coming in March 32
by Derek Kessler Thu, 28 Jan 2010 3:36 pm EST
We’ve all wondered what Palm would be talking about in March when they present at the Game Developers Conference, but now we’re getting a better idea. We have confirmed with Palm that the clearly awesome webOS Plug-in Development Kit will be released as a public beta in March. Putting two and two together, we wouldn’t be at all surprised to see the PDK beta announced at GDC. In fact, we’d be surprised if it wasn’t (assuming it’s not unveiled beforehand). The full 1.0 release for the PDK is expected at some point later in 2010.

"FIRST" = TOOL
Hopefully, this will also bring the ability to play multiplayer games on multiplayer platform, esp since all my friends have i -phone and my pre will beat the hell out of them
I do hope they have some kick ass documentation for the PDK, as their existing documentation is a little patchy at best. Given the complexity jump involved, I hope they are really putting effort into the support side of things!
Pretty

I am curious to know if the C/C++ code that the PDK supports is similar enough to objective C that porting games is relatively easy. If so, then we should expect to see a flood of new apps brought over to webOS since long time iPhone developers won't see the learning curve (or lack of low-level access) as a barrier.
Sounds great - i would love to try creating an app for the first time.... is it easy???
Only thing left is a development kit for extending Luna services (adding additional photo (and soon video) upload services, contact accounts, etc.)
Obviously, the PDK is fully functional as Gameloft is releasing great games (ports) every week. So is Laminar research.
So why not release it now?
Two possible reasons come to mind...
1. It may very well not be ready and some of the more established developers may have gotten early access in exchange for major trouble-shooting work.
2. These companies may have paid to be in early on the beta PDK in order to have first shot at the Pre market.

This strikes me as the most likely reason, based on playing the games. They're fast, they're fun, but they're also not very well-behaved. Every time I try playing AC, if I exit the game, I subsequently get the "Too many cards" error. And Aphalt 5 is subject to crashes.
man!! i will be happy if they incorporate the gfx card to the UI... make it nice and smooth and fast
YES!!! It's the only thing I still envy about my brother's iPhone. Does anyone know if the PDK will actually have an effect on the UI?
*fingers crossed*
From Palm's website:
"Release Schedule
We have been working closely with a handful of partners as we refine the PDK's design and initial implementation, but we'll be expanding soon. A public beta release of the PDK is scheduled to be available to all webOS developers in March, followed by an official release in the first half of 2010."
SO I take it they are taking input from these developers to implement into the PDK. That is a good thing. On the other hand perhaps while they are working closely with them they could ask Gameloft to change iPhone to Pre in their descriptions. It should only take five seconds to alter a description before it is submitted to the app catalog.
Can't wait till a GOOD 3D first person shooter comes to the Pre
ohh just like the fucking flash beta that's probably never going to come out this month
Palm NEVER said a beta would be out this month. Listen to Jon Rubinstein's speech. You won't hear ANYTHING about flash coming out this month. It will come out when 1.4 does.
I never understood why people (I think even one or two of the bloggers here) thought Palm would put out a beta of Flash in January. IIRC he said soon, and 1.4 in February. To me February could easily be considered "soon" in the grand scheme of space and time. I never expected anything until Februaury.
Sure. And a Flash demo will be made available in January.
Yeah! You said it! I wish I had an Android phone instead! They're getting Flash.. uhm.. sometime later this year? Or an iPhone!!! They're getting Flash... oh, uhm, probably never.
Darn Palm for not sticking to deadlines that the users invent in their head...
more good games and apps = more subscribers = even more good games and apps.. Gotta be a good thing except for my bank balance........
Questionss:
What does this do for the average user? can you import games and convert or what?
should we expect new awesome games from webos internal and homebrew ppl?
Oh, it doesn't do anything except make it possible for developers to create awesome 3D games that people have been bitching about since the phone's launch. :)
Hope the pre doesn't become a glorified games console. A PSPre if you will. Need quality apps of all descriptions. With the PDK now available it should help realise the true potential of this bad boy smartphone.
I feel so lost...how are people developing for the pre now? I thought that required a dev kit?
There is a current Software Development Kit (SDK) based on web technologies (HTML5, JavaScript, CSS).
This is the Plug-in Development Kit (PDK) that allows you to make 3D games, call system services from your app, use OpenGL, etc.
thank you!
TO THE UNHAPPY BLOGGERS,
GOOD THINGS COME'S TO THOSE WHO WAIT,IF SOME OF YOU CAN'T WAIT,YOU GUY'S NEED TO OWN MULTIPLE PHONES ON MULTIPLE CARRIERS SO YOU CAN BE HAPPY.REMEMBER ITS JUST A PHONE SO QUIT BITCHING.LOL
