Quick App: Defensive Warfare 19

by Robert Werlinger Mon, 26 Apr 2010 12:43 pm EDT

Yes, ladies and gentleman, my wish has finally come true: a proper Tower Defense type of game has hit the App Catalog. Defensive Warfare ($2.49 in the App Catalog) is a full on place upgradeable towers (guns, AA-rocket launchers and slow- ‘em-down emp weapons) and prevent different classes of vehicles, both air and ground, slow and fast, from reaching the other end of the map.

Gameplay is enjoyable for the most part, but the game does get rather frustrating in the more advanced levels as the AI has a tendency to stop concentrated fire on passing units and aim at whatever units come into range, diluting the effectiveness of my towers and preventing me from advancing through the last few levels. Still, it’s an exciting (and very welcome) entrant into the App Catalog, will most certainly get better as time goes on, and is a  great sign of things to come.

woohoo!

That's what I thought.

I'm a HUGE fan of TD-style games and missed them on my Pre. 2,29

I would check it out for a $1, but not $2.50.

Looks interesting/hopefully there will be some additional releases using the PDK eventually.

Not if you're too cheap to spend $2.50 on a game.

what's with everyone wanting apps for $1 or less. Come on it's only $2.50 that's like a bag of chips and a soda. It's not like you're buying a $65 game for the Xbox 360.

Hahaha so true

This app is not ready for primetime, still needs a lot of work.

It's taking a little getting used to, but I'm liking it so far. It needs a little polish in the game play. The waves come fast, it takes to many taps to place a tower making the game feel hard. Wish there was a pause between waves to evaluate my tower placement.

Oh and I can't sell towers... bummer.

Good game! needs few more tweaks and sounds. Its worth $2.50

Non-PDK games don't have any hope of getting sound (right) in webOS 1.4.1.x because Palm's HTML 5 audio implementation doesn't allow sounds to be played with low latency. When Palm fixes this, expect better sounds in games.

Have you guys not tried Virus Defense?

I reviewed it here... http://www.webosroundup.com/2010/03/virus-defense-review/

I play virus defense all the time. But have beat it on all difficulties so a new td game is very welcome. I am surprised it's not mentioned here. It's been out for a while.

I was about to say, we have had Virus Defense out for a little bit now and we are expanding on it. Still surprised you never reviewed it Dieter.

However I still like Defensive Warfare. I love these style games in general. We have a few fun things planned in this genre so stay tuned .. Invasive Bamboo

I'm gonna wait and hope that they port over Fieldrunners.

The PDK coming out is what stopped my work on an SDK tower defense. It will be impossible to compete with a PDK version, like Field Runners. Although there are many things that need improved on Field Runners.

The A* algorithm is much faster in C++, but doable in Javascript. :)

I agree completely on the Virus Defense app qualifying as a 'proper' tower defense game. I'm actually surprised to see this article's author still unaware of its presence/properness in the app catalog after his last app review's comment thread was more or less hijacked with discussion about Virus Defense.

Maybe he doesn't like it because it isn't traditional? You're working with antivirus/spam blockers/etc vs. trojans/worms/etc rather than military ground and air units versus each other, but there is just as much depth in that some units are better against certain threats than others and all units can be upgraded. I still play the snot out of the 14 levels currently available for the game, and cannot wait for the promised update that gives more levels and an online leader board.

Anyone been able to beat 14304k on Mission 6 (Social Site Addict)?

:) I love my fans!

Thank you very much for the kind comments. We love our fans.

I tried to mention it to Dieter this weekend when I saw him at Pre Dev conference. Maybe he has yet to give it a try. Virus Defense isn't traditional. We intentionally tried to offer something unique.

Vaslin and I are working on improvements and new levels so stay tuned. They are coming.

PS. 14304k is the highest score on that level that I am aware of. However, now I am gonna try to beat it. And yes, soon as we can we will have a leaderboard so you all can compete across all our apps.

It's no Fieldrunners but I'll try it out!
