Quick App: Notes 34

by Robert Werlinger Thu, 06 May 2010 2:32 pm EDT

The memos application Palm built for webOS is simple, elegant and efficient, but there often comes a time when we'd like to include other things in our notes, such as pictures, sound and even videos to complement the text in our notes. Notes ($3.99 in the App Catalog) finally allows you to do just that.  You can save hyperlinks, photos, videos and audio clips inline with the text you've written, and you can categorize notes by type and filter them accordingly in the main screen.  Then, if you're interested in sharing your note, you can send it along in email form complete with all of the media contained within the note.

Can you search like you can with the default memo app?

Yes you can!

My neck hurts =(

No syncing, which is a deal-breaker for me. (The developer does say he's working on syncing.)

$3.99 (even with syncing) seems a little expensive, given the existence of free options like Evernote (which also has the versatility of use from a desktop or laptop).

It's pretty nice, and with syncing I'd probably pay $1.99 to $2.99, depending on other features.

(BTW, any review -- mini or not -- that starts out by complimenting the native webOS Memos app is automatically suspect. The Memos app is *completely* ass-tastic. Who the hell are y'all kidding?)

I actually hiked up the price, because a lot of users told me it was too cheap initially (you can verify this by looking at the reviews in the App catalog).
$3.99 isn't a lot to pay for quality. You get what you pay for. Same way you have $0.99 burgers and $6 burgers.

Are you serious? Do you know how much work it takes to make an application? From the looks of it, I'd say the author made a quality app for $4! Not to mention that he's continuing to add value and you're getting better support then most large companies. Quit being so cheep and think of this as an investment in a quality program by a quality author (as a developer - and not a customer - I can even see that)! After all, if author's can't make money developing for webOS, what makes you think they will develop for it instead of the very lucrative Android or iPhone markets?

So even though this app doesn't do what I need it to do (sync), and even though Evernote (which is free) currently does do what I need it to do, I'm "cheep" because I don't think this app is worth $4?

Is your mommy home, and does she know you're playing on the Internet?

My apologies if I offended you. I should have pointed out that I can't have synchronization for security reasons (http://www.evernote.com/about/privacy/; http://the.taoofmac.com/space/blog/2008/04/29/2242

WHEN SOMETHING RELATES TO SPREAD SHEETS WILL SHOW UP?

Karnak says, "Sometime after you stop shouting, n00b."

If I stop shouting, nobody will hear... And spread sheet application needed as mach as the text one...

LOL, nice try... Still amazing that no one remembers how we used memos on our PalmOS devices and how that is step one in filling the gap. Step two is to be able to edit MS-Word docs and move them between phone and PC...

Anyone? Beuhler?

This Notes app showed me that it IS possible to add some real functionality to the Pre.
FINALLY.
This app, and also TimePiece, show that it really could be done if a dev puts his mind to it.
Enough already with the self-described "simple" apps.
The Notes app is easily worth the $4.

Been quite happy with Fliq Notes so far. No syncing option but I haven't missed it so far

This is exactly what I've needed. Great app.

But: does it save in the Palm Cloud of Saving upon daily backups? Or: can it import notes previous made in the Pre's original Notes application?

No Cloud-based backup functionality for now. You can import your previous notes by copying/pasting

Love this app, author added text formating and is responsive to feedback. He added the start note in title feature I wanted and a passcode feature and added dates and reminders. I'm using it to make notes about Nanplayer, videogame release dates, and album releases (extra cool cause you can attach a pic of the cover art) and various other things. It makes taking notes fun and also is nice to look at, but without being a pain to use like Evernote.

Yep. I've received several emails from other developers who use my App to take notes and make screenshots while developing their own Apps

A few questions not answered by the "review" above.

1. Can you encrypt your notes?
2. Can you at least dump all your notes into an e-mail for backup via one button or menu selection? [This is the route SplashID has taken for now.]
3. Can you back up your notes onto the USB partition so you could manually back up to your PC?
4. Are names, telephone numbers, street addresses, e-mail addresses, SMS number, dates, etc. recognized within a note allowing you to launch the appropriate app (Contacts, Phone, GoogleMaps, E-mail, SMS, Calendar, etc.)?

1) No (Although you can add a pin code to lock your notes)
2) Yes (It's a hidden feature). I'm still working on a more robust web based syncing solution
3) No (I'm anti-USB. My backup solution would be usb-less)
4) Yes (For web links, email address and phone numbers only)

That is great to hear. Thanks!

You mention the developer is working on syncing - is that just for the PC or for the mac as well?

It will be web based (meaning PC/MAC/Whatever has internet)

It appears that attachments can only be at the end, and no text can follow, so you can't have text-picture-text-picture-text-video-text-and so on.

I guess you'd have to add the ability to place the cursor after the attachment, where it would actually be an embedded object rather than an attachment.

Just another thought...

I like the polished look of this app but is there an "undo" function? I've lost important data in the default Memos app by accidentally deleting selected text I was trying to copy.

That my friend is freaking brilliant idea. I'll put that in my to-do list... Oh wait, I can just use my own Notes App to do that

I would love to see alarm reminders for each note.

Yes, you can add alarm reminders for individual notes. Grab the latest version of the App

Looks like a great app, think I will buy. If I backup using the PalmDatabase.db3 File will my notes on this app be saved too? That way I could do a restore if I lost the phone...

Stupid question, but what is "PalmDatabase.db3" ?

I personally think, is not an option to replace evernote yet, HOWEVER,it has some very strong points:

1- Evernote do not have an interest for webOS they are too busy with the other more popular platforms. the Iphone version has like the 10 update already, WebOS still none.. snoopgoat published like the third update already and it is a new app..

2- Is an excellent app to replace the standard memo app, it has a huge load of features, CATEGORIES! is awesome I send like a million of email to evernote to incorporate this in webOS app. never replied

3- you don't need to be online to take a note like evernote

The problem I have is cloud syncing, this needs to happen in order to compete with evernote.

I am going to believe the developer and buy the app.. hopefully he will keep his promise and release cloud backup syncing very soon.

I am not a developer, but I strongly support them. NOBODY WORKS FOR FREE, they are PROFESSIONALS and they deserve to get paid fair for their job.

great app!!!
I was waiting for this a long time
for sure no way overpriced!!
just keep up the good work
and by the way the little faq & answer here was quite useful
thanks again for a much awaited app, now it is only waiting for shazam :-)

snoopgoat,

I've been thinking of finally using my "Tasks" function in Outlook--I've always used my calendar for tasks and notes as it seemed easier. Now I'm thinking of trying something different. Basically, I'm constantly putting tasks and reminders in my Calendar and it's getting rather cluttered.

So, when you add syncing functionality, will this include the ability to sync with Outlook as a "Task" or in Outlook's "Notes"? (I currently sync Outlook to Google Calendar to Pre and back again with Compainionlink software but only sync Calendar and Contacts.)

Can someone tell me if there is an advantage to using one or another--Tasks vs. Notes--(or this app) for reminders/a to-do list? Thanks!
