Quick App: Photo Effects 28

by Robert Werlinger Thu, 20 May 2010 10:09 am EDT

How do you build a webOS app that can perform advanced photo editing tasks when the platform isn't quite capable of it yet?  You let a remote server do all of the heavy lifting, of course.  Photo Effects allows you to rotate and add effects to any picture in your photo roll by uploading them to the cloud to the developer's servers for processing.  Those concerned about privacy need not worry, as the files generated cloud-side have random file names and are deleted after an hour.  After your changes are applied and the photo is downloaded into the app, it's easy to set the modified picture as your wallpaper and send it along via MMS or email.   It's a rather ingenious solution to the current limitations webOS has in this space, and best of all, it's free.

There's also a plus version of Photo Effects for $.99 which adds photo resizing and cropping.

A Demo is what I wanted to see, now I'm going to buy the paid version. Thanks

I bought it and I'm pretty happy with it, especially for 99 cents. (Makes me think of "I'd buy THAT for a dollar!")

Nice to hear that you're enjoying it.

Yup I bought it too. Nice app.

It's great seeing developers innovating and finding solutions around the current limitations. I know some people just like to crap on the developer.. but kudos to the devs.

What I Don't Like Is The Photos Go Through A Server First!

Exactly. How can one verify it gets deleted after an hour. An uploading it to a server that's not yours, doesn't that remove all sorts of rights to that photo?

I just don't trust it.

i seriously can't believe WebOS doesn't have this built in... the simplest of functions, available on almost any pos phone for the last 10 years... and it wasn't included in one of the best phone OSs developed, wow.

and yeah, i'm still not ok with sending my photos out to a webservice to do the formatting and send em back.

why can't Palm make an app to do this? or maybe (like normal phones) include it in the options of the normal photo viewer.

there are just too many stumbling points, it's hard to totally love WebOS... and it's sad :(

Did you read the article, WebOS in its current state of development does not allow a developer to create an app to edit photos directly on the phone.

This app is a workaround until WebOS is fully cooked.

Which should be by the end of the year!

That why it can be done on the phone now!

Rob

well, the 'editing' this app is doing, based on the video, is nothing more than what could be some calls to 'convert' from imagemagick. I can't check if it's in optware right now, but it's conceivable that getting imagemagick compiled for optware on webos shouldn't be too awfully difficult.

It's a shame everything on webos runs as root. If they made luna run as a normal user, then they could safely let us just run linux commands under the hood for simple things like this. As it is, you have to create a service to do this type of thing first, and then you are limited in the flexibility of what you can do vs. simply piping out to a command and getting the results back. I'm a linux sysadmin, not a programmer. There's a lot more I could be doing with my phone if I could use my familiar tools provided by the OS, and not an abstracted HTML/Javascript thing.

An OS can't come with EVERYTHING built into it. If it did, why even have an app store? They need to leave features out so that it encourages 3rd party developers to sell apps (which Palm/ HP will take a cut of).

See how that works? Good, now stop whining.

my point was that this is a simple feature set that has been included in every cheap phone i've owned with a camera for the last several years.
for something like this to not be included as part of the options in the photo viewing app itself is just silly.

now something like those stupid images you can overlay on the picture (hats, backdrops, things like that), yes should be an app. but simple photo manipulation???

and to use a term like "advanced photo editing", and further clarify with "rotate" is quite hilarious...
good job.

The iPhone's web browser can do more than webOS, including this kind of stuff.

It's pretty pathetic, indeed.

who said anything about the web browser?
and get outa here with the iphone fanboi crap...

I agree it's not ideal. When Palm adds the functionality to do this on the phone there will be plenty of apps available. If you can't wait, use Photo Effects. :)

it's not a shot at you buy any means.
i always love a good work around.

a shot at Palm leaving out key elements of the OS...

My biggest issue with this app is in ablility to change the storage folder. A lot of times I want to place the photo in photo roll so switcheroo would put it on my wall. But I cant change the folder nor web OS allow me to copy a photo or move it. (I know I can do it after connecting with USB)

I'll look into this.

You can move files around with the homebrew app Internalz.

Yeppers!

I wonder why the free version of Photo Effects is available on the Pixi, but Photo Effects Plus is not?

Thanks for pointing this out. I just checked the box for the Pixi but it may take a few days to appear in the App Catalog. Not sure how it happened.

this app is pretty awesome and it is free - props to "rustyapps" keep up the great work - would love to be able to do something about redeye or other effects would be great too - The pre gives some pretty ridiculous red eye and it would be great to remove without have to edit on computer - thanks again

does paid verson have better image quality after edit?

This is definitely a topic that's close to me so Im happy that you wrote about it. I'm also happy that you did the subject some justice. Not only do you know a great deal about it, you know how to present in a way that people will want to read more. Im so happy to know someone like you exists on the web.tampa bridal photography

Who would want a photo with all the dumb comments below it...All they're doing is taking a screen shot. Single out just the photo then instaprint will be worth it. Buy A Photo Booth
