Quick App: PictureIt 24

by Robert Werlinger Mon, 14 Dec 2009 5:28 pm EST

Image search on the mobile web can often be cumbersome; using Google image search to find hilarious pictures of cats superimposed with human faces or your favorite sports star is more of an unwieldy task than perhaps it should be , and it doesn't get much easier when using the likes of Bing, Photobucket or Flickr to accomplish this task.

PictureIt, by Codinary, looks to provide an elegant solution to this problem by utilizing an interface that's very similar to the stock webOS photo viewing application to browse image results from Google, Bing, Flickr, and Photobucket.  The interface allows for the movement between results with a simple flick to the left or right, thumbnail view, and the ability to share and download photos directly from the application

Convenience in this case comes with a price, and PictureIt can be found in the App Catalog (direct link for Pre and Pixi users) for a penny shy of $2.00.

Very nicely done I must say, but considering, I can do all of these things in the browser (though not nearly as easily) $2.00 seems steep...

CRUD! It's cheaper than a Big Mac and will last years longer than the gas and bloating of the cheeseburger. Palm needs to go after a more affluent crowd. This app actually does something!

in the end you can do nearly everything with a browser, notes and a calculator - but that is not the point. the apps are there to make life easier and please be reasonable $2 is not too much for a good made interface...

Not a bad app, but I must say that for $2.00 I was a little disappointed to discover that it only retrieves the first 63 images from Google. If you want to see more, there is a link that takes you to Google Images Search on the web. It would have been nice to know that before purchasing the app.

Still it's probably one of the better apps out right now.

That's a pretty huge limitation for this type of app and for costing $2...

It makes the whole search aspect kind of pointless unless you just happen to get the results you want.

$1.99 does not seem like a heck of a lot of money to me for an app that can save someone a little time.

If 200 people download it the developer's 70% cut would be ~$280. Assuming it took 5 days to code/test/debug at 8 hrs a day that would have earned the developer ~$7.00/hr. That's less than the minimum wage in the US of $7.25/hr.

Yeah, I know there are a lot of assumptions there. But I'm just saying, $1.99 folks. A Starbucks latte is more than that and you can only consume it once.

It's not that $1.99 is a bank breaker... It's a comparison of the app price vs usability for people.

Searchme did a lot more than this app for free (granted the service is no longer actively running).

The *one* major issue is that you can't acquire "more" results. If you do a search, and it's not in the first 63 items, you can't acquire more results. Every search feature basically lets you do this. If you end up redirecting to google search on most searches, then you might as well search from google for free, since you can't use the optimized display format past 63 results.

hey guys, thanks a bunch for your interest in the App. I'm one of the developers of the app and will like to point out the fact that 63 image count issue is a Google restriction not a PictureIt issue. Searching on Bing, Flickr or Photobucket does not restrict the number of images retrieved.

Regarding PictureIt in its entirety, we knowingly set out to build an app that we know isn't for everyone but solved an issue we encountered often. We wanted well formatted image search for the Palm Pre and we put a lot of time into developing a simple solution in the most elegant and unobtrusive manner.

We thank those who see support and appreciate the time and energy put into developing an application.

Thanks,

It's good to hear that the issue is isolated to only google search.

It would be cool if you could do a screenshot of the images as you see it 1st frame of the youtube video above and make that your wallpaper on the phone

I don't use PictureIt, but it's nice to see a developer care about what the customers have to say about it.
DBalmer, from Wobble Words (whom I have spoken with) ....
Kevin, from Dealert (which I don't use either) and a couple of others (whose names I can't place right now), are also very interested in answering their customers' concerns.
It's good to see.

Bought it. Very useful app! I was just gonna post about the search limit only being google, but the Dev beat me to it. 2 bucks is too much? Puh-leez

Thanks for the support. I'm happy you found it useful.

I also bought it. Very nice, too bad about the image restriction from google but good to hear the others the app can search have no limit. Thanks!

Thanks for the support.

searching for images isn't something i do on my phone often.

i'd like a program that edits photos i take on my pre. Crop, etc. maybe sepia for those that like that, etc. Then can upload directly to my picasa account. all in a slick package. i think that would be a good app. most of the apps now fill a need i don't have.

This really grinds my gears...I wish I could buy/try it but I haven't looked at the palm app store since who knows when because of the stupid limitation that they still have not fixed! WTF...they better get this new update out real soon which better fix this issue, this is ridiculous...

This will likely be a day-one purchase for me if/when Canadian Pre users are able to buy apps. When I get bored at work I tend to kill time by downloading wallpapers on my phone, and I know a few times where I've tried to show somebody a picture of something from google that takes way too long to navigate to from inside the web browser.

We made this App specially for you! :)

Sadly, European users (non-US user, maybe?) do not have access to this application. Is this a developer preference or a Palm failure? Either way, when will we start to get access to the new apps available and give the developers access to a much larger market?

Last time I checked, we couldn't offer paid apps outside the U.S. I will have to look into that and get back to you.
