QuickOffice offering discount on full editing suite 39

by Jonathan I Ezor Sun, 06 Feb 2011 11:23 am EST

We have known for some time that QuickOffice intends to release an update to (or version of) its QuickOffice Connect Mobile Suite that will enable editing of Microsoft Office documents. Currently, those lucky (and few) Pre 2 owners have the reading-only version of the app via webOS 2.0; the rest of us have the abandoned DataViz DocumentsToGo to use.

While we still don't know when the editing version of QuickOffice will be released, or at what price, we can now tell you that you can get a discount when it does come out (whenever that is). Says QuickOffice:

Currently, our Quickoffice Connect™ viewer application is being delivered at no charge to users with webOS 2.0 firmware updates and shipped on new devices like the Palm Pre 2 "out of the box". We are working hard to deliver our full editing version, Quickoffice Connect™ Mobile Suite, which will be released in the future as a paid upgrade.

Sign up to be notified when our full editing version is available for HP webOS! You will be notified when it is available to purchase and become eligible for a special exclusive discount on our initial release when you subscribe.

Of course, as soon as we know anything more, we'll be sure to let you know. Hopefully we won't have to wait too much longer to break the good news.

As soon as it is available, I am on it. Good to hear this.

this is a little off topic but has anyone that has ordered the palm pixi plus from 1saleaday.com gotten it yet? its been about 6 days and i still haven't gotten mine.

There's a forum topic on it, so you should check there.

This sounds really familiar.

So I assume we can get the base version when they upgrade all of us to WebOS 2.0. Heck, couldn't HP do that for all of us now as a download? Bypass our carrier????? That's the pc model.

Good news re Quick Office.

From their Dev Day presentations, it looks like the Quick Office app is a hybrid app, and they won't be allowing those apps until webOS 2.0. Since our phones still have 1.4.5, that's a no-go for Quick Office.

if only I had 2.0...

Means on the other hand: HP will unveil tablets without any working office app that allows you on the tablet to edit Microsoft documents....omg that is absolutely unprofessional....

And btw: When will we get this damned update that they promised us for nearly 1 year now???

when its damn well ready :p

Stop whining and get the HP Slate with REAL MS Office 2010 on it.

no he wants damned smartphone os tablet not windows rawr

@nxd10 I've wondered that myself. I suspect it's a contractual thing with Datavis where Palm is obligated to bundle Docs2Go viewer w/all 1.x releases.

As for the rest, I don't know why, but I have this weird suspicion that full editing will be part of the Feb. 9th announcement. As someone else said, that is such an important feature to the usefulness of a tablet. I also have a feeling we'll see a 2.x OTA rollout tied to Feb 9th, either in the wee small hours of the 9th or the 10th.

This is all wild conjecture, I have no inside information.

@Houseband, the damed update will be available to you "in the coming months" lmao

That is truly exciting news. One of the biggest holes I have on my phone is a lack of an Office-type suite.

I remember signing up for an update for docs to go. It never happened because of Palm. I hope they don't screw this one up also.

"because of Palm"?

What? Palm decided they don't want an office app for their customers. That doesn't sound very plausible to me.

Because DataViz claimed it's because of Palm? And you have 0 doubt that this is a face-saving excuse because ...?

Do you have any actual inside information on this?

If you read the Davitz response you would know that they were waiting but I guess Palm felt games were more important. The way things have been going i don't doubt that it isn't true. Look how long developers have been waiting for more api support and to this day the catalog does not support hybrid apps. Palm never responded either.

"Our intention had been to replace the Palm Viewers, which were based on the Documents To Go technology, with a full editing, aftermarket version of Documents To Go. In order to do this in a way that we felt would be most intuitive to users, we wanted to have the full version seamlessly replace the built in viewers. To do this, we needed some technical help from Palm. Because Palm was focusing on other areas at the time (including their very survival), and there was no official information available allowing developers to help ourselves, i.e., an SDK, there was a delay in getting us this information. Rather than do a substantially larger project that would result in a "sub-optimal" user experience, we decided to wait"

Wait a minute, Palm has said for a while that they will only allow hybrids on 2.0, so they did respond on that one.

3 days, 1 hour 31 minutes left

hope they release webos2.1 that day and not one second later...

I'm sorry, but after spending $30 for Classic and then being told it will not be supported in 2.0, I am extremely gun shy towards spending anything more than a buck or two for webOS apps. Hate on me all you want for feeling this way if it makes you feel better.
And another thing totally unrelated, am I the only fool who wants a full functioning EQ in the music player?

You are making a lot of assumptions, primary among them being that HP is relying on QuickOffice to provide document functionality and that "devices like the Palm Pre 2" includes tablets.

Why not? The tablets will run the same webOS, otherwise why call them webOS tablets?

I just registered myself and my wife.

I encourage everyone to register so that QuickOffice can see the level of pent up demand for their product on WebOS.

Looks like the iPad version is $14.99 after the 40% discount

And what was another irate commenter saying when other tablets bundle this functionality for free?

PalmPad and Quick Office, sweet!

I think it willbe available on new HP devices based on the tone ofthe massage..

@Jamex, Dataviz blamed Palm. That doesn't neccesarilly mean it's true. Let's remember that the following week they announced all but selling Docs2Go 'lock, stock & barrel' to a Palm competitor.

@MikeParenti Yeah, I agree they kind of screwed the pooch on that one, but I suspect it has to do w/classic and the old PalmOS ecosystem not supporting device sales as much as they had hoped.

@dlovegrove I acknowledged my post was assumption based and entirely wild conjecture. That said, as far as QuickOffice goes, they largely announced when first unveiling 2.0 that QO would be the document editor on the platform going forward. It already exists for other platforms and it wouldn't make sense for HP to reinvent the wheel. Also, they've made the point many times about not wanting to fragment the platform a la Android, there's no reason to believe that they would employ two different document solutions on difering hardware running the same core OS.

Actually, MotionApps jumped the gun about Classic. Palm had no intention to drop support for Classic from 2.0. MotionApps decided they wouldn't wait for Palm to tell them why the PalmOS ROM wasn't in the version of webOS on the Pre2.

Palm set it up so that the Classic app would include the PalmOS ROM, which would free up 10MB of desperately needed space for other system files (since the system partition only has about 475mb assigned to it)

Wouldn't it have been better to reply to each of those comments one at a time?

I used my upgrade and got an Epic 4G which came with think freeoffice will full editing support. I tried quickoffice but it isn't as good as Docs to Go. This was my biggest issue with Webos and one of the reasons I gave up on the platform. Good to see some news but there is no telling how long this is going to take.

If HP were smart they would be bundling the full version of this with WebOS 2.0 for free to get a jump on the competition. People are going to need some real incentives to go to WebOS. Sadly, I think they are a bit late on the new hardware and software updates for older devices. By the time I get 2.0 on my Pre Plus I'll have about 6 months till my next hardware upgrade. Right now the odds of me sticking with WebOS are not that high.

for me it is one more disappointing message concerning webOS.

I hoped for a full version with the february announcement. But it does not look like this. Otherwise this message of QO would make no sense.

I also hope(d) for a rollout of the update on 9th february. But as far as O2 Germany is concerned they twittered to me that they do not have any new information yet.

So I'll wait for Wednesday and will decide afterwards if I should jump ship.

Finally! Documents on webOS! (BTW, what's up with the comments count?)

great to get the discount now...so you can use it on the tablets for free...jussayin.

Though I hope there are versions of office on the tablets..that would kick ass

I sense webOS 2.0 coming soon. Hopefully to a sprint Pre- near you.

Mow that Palm has been "given" Classic by Motion Apps, can't they just include it in 2.0? That way, I can just use my old version of Doc2Go...

I signed-up for the newsletter. Bring on the apps and bring on wednesday!
