Real live TouchPad demo units arrive at Wal-Mart [video] 140

by Derek Kessler Thu, 23 Jun 2011 2:49 pm EDT

In something of a shift for the world’s largest retailer, at least one Wal-Mart has a real live working HP TouchPad on display. Wal-Mart traditionally has put plastic dummy units out on display, but in this case appears to have broken with the traditional and put a functional webOS tablet out for all to touch. They've also broken with the concept of time, putting the TouchPad out more than a week before it's supposed to be available. Of course, there’s only so much the toucher can do without a network connection, but actually getting personally acquainted with the latest and biggest version of webOS can go a long way for a potential customer. So we’ve got at least one Wal-Mart – now we need Best Buy to fill in those big-ole displays of theirs.

Thanks to Josh for the tip!

Does anybody get WalMart selling the TouchPad? They typically sell very low end PC's and TV's. Are any of their shoppers going to be in the market for a $499+ tablet?

After looking peopleofwalmart's website, I think Bob-C might have a point! ;)

Walmart has been trying for years to sell more cutting-edge tech. They've had iPods, iPhones and iPads for a long time now. This makes sense.

Unfortunately, it's at the same prices as all other retailers.

The, "at the same prices as all other retailers", part is the problem. When people go into Wal-mart, they are expecting to see electronic stuff they want at cheaper prices than anywhere else. They'll buy that $300 PC that has an Intel chip one generation behind even an i3. They they'll chuckle to their friends about the great deal they got compared to the $500 i5 PC they saw on sale in the Staples circular. I don't see them buying a full retail priced TouchPad.

Last thought. Thinking of all the places rumored to be selling the TouchPad (Best Buy, Staples, OfficeMax, etc); if they are all at the same price, where do you rank Wal-mart on your list of places to go buy it?

Where do I rank Wal-mart? Last. BB, OM, and Staples all have rewards programs so while the list price may not change you at least earn some cash or credit back.

Of course, the equation changes if the stores decide to compete by throwing in accessories for free or bundling with discounts. If they did that then Wally World might have a shot.

you're forgetting the vast number of folks here in the states where BB, OM, Staples, etc are an hour or two away and Wal-Mart is only 20 minutes down the road.

Not to mention that Wal-Mart is one of the largest retailers in the world which means they offer HP, Apple, and others something they don't get at BB, OM, & Stables - visibility to folks who aren't specifically shopping for electronics.

Bingo!

I am in New York City, with 8.4 million residents, and the reverse is true. BB, OM and Staples are all walking distance. Wall Mart is a drive out to New Jersey.

I believe they sell ipads/etc. Actually expect to see lots of retailers sell the touchpad. The margins (so I've heard) on the ipad are terrible like 8%. BTW, a usual margin on electronics are around 15%. So, if HP is pricing things along the 15% line, Wallmart and Best Buy will be making close to twice as much for each Touchpad sold . This should result in them pushing it over the ipad.

Why not...Wally World is selling the Ipad now!

you can bring your mobile hotspot enabled Pre2 with you.

that was my thought, too. but with my Pre-

Mobile Hotspot kills my Pre- battery so fast... maybe lasts for an hour tops.

damn i gotta make a run ~!!

Is this select Wal-Marts or everywhere?

Must be select locations. Just called my local walmart and they dont have any "HP iPads in stock." Shocking? I think not...

LOL!!!

Nothing at my Wal-Mart. Not even a screen protector. :(

Oh sheeet.. I know where I'm heading after work

It looks wickedly fast. Where are the haters now?

Agreed, It looks to be optimized.

Ditto...I watched and smiled and thought: geez, that thing is blazing fast!

This thing is much faster than the units at the events. I am even more excited and can't wait to get mine shipped already.

haters are gonna hate
Archos is about to crush the tablet game Asus style

Agreed. Hardware is one thing but overall experience is another. The specs on the Archos devices are impressive but that won't matter much if everything else doesn't fit together.

I noticed that Archos has an actual hard drive?? Won't that make it heavier and hotter than flash memory?

That Hard Drive is also gonna suck battery capacity like a Soda.

Archos is doing exactly the right thing.
no one would consider those tablets at a 500$ price point like everyone else, but for 280$ an 8" tablet with 1.5GHz Dual Core and 4:3 1024x768, thats just awesome, webOS fanboy or not.
and you get your billion whatever android apps, so its getting harder and harder for HP to sell their Touchpads.

discussions about battery life are total **** a 1.8" (one platter) Hard Drive doesnt suck way more energy than Flash memory, but speed could be a factor (access time)...

"The new 250GB 1.8-inch HDD ( MK2529GSG) achieves a new low of 0.0016 watts-per-GB in energy consumption "
for example (from http://www.battery-online.org/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=104...)

I have to wonder how much of that is because it's brand new without any extra programs or patches installed, and because there is no network signal. I have a second Palm Pre- which is used only to play games (and will replace my cracked and worn unit when it totally fails) and it is super speedy and quick compared to my everyday Pre- I use as a phone.

My Pre was a first day Pre and when I replaced a few days ago I noticed the replacement was a lot faster than my Pre so I thought the same thing but after installing all the apps and stuff it was still much faster than my old Pre. I think it has something to do with hardware firmwares which isn't something that gets updated with software updates.

Your perception of fast is a bit flawed but then again you are a Webos user so it might seem fast to you. Webos needs to get to the same level as fast as Android and IOS because people who are familiar with those devices will view Webos as really slow. I found the loading to be slow and at the same level as the original pre at launch. Overtime it got even slower and considering this is a brand new device with nothing on it makes it even worse.

Depending on when HP ships the real thing, I wouldn't be surprised for Walmart to have theirs on the shelf a little early.

Be sure you have freetether on your pre before you head to wally-world :-)

good luck maintaining a signal. Most Walmarts have their electronics in the back of the store, where data signals fear to tread.

Nice! I'm assuming just Wal-Mart stores State-side & not north of the border quite yet.

I've seen Playbooks & iPad (real vs. plastic) on-display at Wal-Mart before.... mind you, the playbook was in a bad shape (screen & interface was broken). Hopefully the Touchpads won't be abused so badly.

Oh **** he recorded the S/N! Now the HP police are gonna track down this Wal-Mart!!!

No, just use it to download the webOS 3.0 doctor image for it...*wink*

Was this at a regular walmart or one of those super walmarts? There is only a regular walmart in my little town. I'd have to go to the next town over to see one.

Did he film it while on a boat!

Wow...demoing an internet tablet with no wi-fi. Yeesh.

I would criticize HP, but seemingly every non-iPad tablet faces this problem at various retail outlets.

Still wondering why the 32GB version is being stressed, too. You go to Wal-Mart and Target and the Acer Iconia Tab is sold in the cheapest 16GB version for $449.

Hopefully they'll have it fixed soon. As to pricing, past reports have shown that the retailer margins for the TP are close to 15% (so like 80-90 bucks) compared to the ipad where a retailer gets only 40 8% (so like 45 bucks). Not only does this mean that the retailer makes extra money, but also gives "wiggle-room" for special pricing if HP lets them go below MSRP (won't happen initially, but could later).

Yes, but consider how many more iPads will be sold per Touchpad. The retailers sell all the iPads they can get their hands on, but I am doubting that will be the case for the Touchpad.

I don't know how it's in the states, but here in Europe even the iPad is demoed without a working internet. Does Apple provide a WiFi-Hotspot for each shop???

Nope. While certain people may try to tell you otherwise, the WiFi iPad has the same limitations. The same lack of apps too. Again, certain people aren't happy unless they find something to complain about.

Not true. At all. The iPads at Apple stores, Frys and Best Buy DO have WiFi with no sign on, and each are full of apps. The iPads "demo'd" at Target, Wal-Mart, and wherever else are behind closed glass in custom Apple displays either displaying a static image or a looped video.

Nice to see people upranking complete disinformation around these parts.

hmm. not at my Fry's and Best Buy.
And no custom apple display at my Wal-Mart either.

Anecdotal evidence is hard to base an argument on, but my job used to have me travel on a run of 8-11 cities. One was Los Angeles. Another was Chicago. I live in a fairly major one as well. Shopped for tech in pretty much all of them, and never saw a Frys or Best Buy that did not have an Apple table set up with fully enabled iPads.

I take you at your word, but given the location and diversity of where I traveled (not to mention the reports from people in these forums that corroborate the same at their Frys or Best Buy), I'm inclined to believe that your experience is the exception.

Not mine.

Let's not talk about the Touchpad until it shows up in Best Buy and Fry's before you say Wi-Fi will not work the device just as well. After the first comment in this story, individuals were already talking about using the hotspot feature with their own phones.

Can't say anything about other tablets working the same way as iPads do in the Apple store for the obvious reason being that only Apple products are sold there.

A static image or video doesn't equal apps being interacted with by a user.If you don't go to the places that you mentioned, user will not know how the iPad works until they purchase it. Today, users at a Wal-mart of all places will be able to make an informed decision about the Touchpad.

Where's the FUD in that?

Sigh.

The entire point is that I WANT people to be able to make an informed decision about the Touchpad, but if the browser is non-functional and NO apps are loaded, it's a bit difficult to do that. Meanwhile, Apple's "Now" commercial for the iPad 2 shows off a range of apps, and most likely you already know someone that has one. So even a static screen iPad has a HUGE legup in familiarity and reputation over a TouchPad in the same circumstances.

To act like TouchPad and iPad or Honeycomb and iPad or even Playbook and iPad are on the same footing for a customer when shopping for a tablet is to fail to understand why Apple has such a lopsided lead in this space.

I mean, these forums have become so divorced from reality...you think people are bringing hotspot features on their phones with them everywhere? Yeah...maybe the handful of WebOS fans already presold. The other 99.9 percent of humanity needs a wee bit more help in making their decision.

Fans of WebOS are savvy enough to do this. People in these forums will do this. That isn't an unrealistic expectation for them or us. I believe you would agree with that.

The lead Apple has isn't insurmountable which is why RIM, Android, and now HP hasn't just thrown in the towel and just said it's too late. This is just starting. That's the reality.

I just ask that before you call it dead on arrival, let it arrive first. Is that fair?

why are we even arguing about this? Walmart doesn't have wi-fi in their stores. So you can't browse on any tablet, ipads included. In stores that have wi-fi (like best buy) have fully functioning ipads and the touchpads will work fine there as well...

whats the problem here?

Already said this isn't specific to Touchpad, but the downrankers can't be bothered to read. My point is that Wal-Mart ALSO doesn't usually have iPads or even laptops out AND powered up for people to use to get to this point. The laptops I see touchable at Wal-Mart are usually manhandled and have keys missing and such.

Anyway, not like people will read this explanation either.

Here Walmart is the one to blame. Not only is the TouchPad affected, but the iPad, PlayBook and Android tablets are as well.

oh man oh man oh man oh man oh man

Also, where are the apps? Even no-name Honeycomb devices get loaded with Tegra Zone games and other baubles.

I hear the Touchpad will have a Kindle app. But then again who doesn't?

Judging by the downranks, people around here don't like or care about apps. That's great news for prospective developers!

I read your reaction to the Pivot app. Is it possible to surprise you more than once? I don't think anyone will accuse you of being a cheerleader but it's hard to not treat you like a complainer when that's all you and couple of other do on here.

You may have noticed that Pivot was a genuinely new and unique development to the WebOS ecosystem. I like that.

But I've seen so little of that since February 9, and so much regurgitation of the same demos, talking points, unfulfilled executive promises, and "WebOS on PC" pipe dreams....that's why my tone is the way it is.

So...new and exciting developments? Yay. Same ole', same ole? Booo. That's my general formula.

I stopped at a super Walmart yesterday and asked a Walmart employee in the electronics department about the HP Touchpad. She looked at me like I had three heads. She knew nothing about it or when they were getting them. She referred me to the Walmart website.

I looked around and there is no HP Touchpad material anywhere.

On to the next Walmart today to see what they know.

and this surprises you? when i venture into walmart i just hope to get out without catching anything deadly.

There was another demo from an event in NY and the Touchpad seemed very snappy! Looks like they have been working on make sure it is optimized.

What I don't get is why anyone shops regularly at Walmart, let alone buy consumer electronics there...

I go there when I need a quick, cheap rental. They'll take anything back - no questions asked.

because not everyone likes to spend a lot of money at 10 different places when they can spend a little money all at the same place

Need the tipster to report back as to presence or lack-of proxy support on wi-fi. I want one so bad, but can't use it @ work without proxy support.

WHEEEERRRREEE?!?!

What's with the hatred towards Walmart? Just because you feel it's "unnecessary" to shop there doesn't mean hundreds of thousands don't shop there. If I were HP I would want to sell my device in as many stores and on as many carriers as possible. So I think they are doing right with the TouchPad thus far. They just need to do the same with the Pre3.

I wouldn't say it's unnecessary to shop at Walmart, I'm one of those "starving college students", but I can't stand Walmart as a company. Plus, in terms of consumer electronics there is far less knowledge there, typically, than dedicated stores like Best Buy and Fry's.

In the case of the Touchpad, if you're not saving money by getting it at Walmart, I say why bother?

Do you actually care about employee knowledge of consumer products? I certainly don't. When I go to a store to buy something I already know what I want. Best Buy reps only know what they have had spat at them and say what they think the customer wants to hear (truthful or not). I would buy it wherever it costs the least (but will not be buying a tablet unless it drops to less than a netbook, which I know will never happen).

Sigh. I happen to be one of those BBY reps that apparently only know what is spat at them. And that blanket statement is simply not true.

Everyone at the BBY computer dept where I work is extremely knowledgeable and interested in personal tech. In some stores the same high standards don't hold true, it all has to do with management and the time they take to put together a good sales force. I guess I'm lucky then that my managers actually care about customer experience.

The same cannot be said for Walmart when it comes to persona/consumer tech. The reason being is they don't care. They know they are providing cheap/er products to a mass market; that's all that concerns them. I'd rather go to a place that values the fact that a human being took the time to walk into their store and wants to spend their money there.

it always has to do with management. + for that.

Hopefully the computer dept is more knowledgeable than the TV dept. I asked some questions about a TV, the rep said he would get "the expert". The expert comes over and reads the tag on the TV. I don't need an "expert" to read to me. I actually know how to read already.

nothing at my walmart

INTERESTING....

Im suprised they would have a live price tag with a live unit, yet won't sell till the first heh.

They are taking pre-orders so why not?

Wal-Mart is taking preorders? I was wondering, haven't caught any posts of WalMart preorders, and nothing to be found on their web site as of earlier today.

You are right. There is a link on their site but when you click on it it says not available at this time how stupid.

man all these videos and stuff is making time seem slower.... lol.

I took a trip to my walmart, right before i read this post and no mention of TP at all. They didnt even have a clue what a touchpad was.

My local BB doesnt have setup either but another one near by does have the hp table setup with paper touchpad

/heads to the 6 Walmarts in the vicinity...

Archos is about to Crush the game(xoom, touchpad, and playbook)
I see only the ipad and the samsung tab selling more than these tablets
This is competitive pricing. Does Archos really have more "scale" than HP?

http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/06/23/archos-announces-80-g9-and-101-g...

LOL.. archos? not to mention its running honeycomb. They aren't going to crush anything.

Exactly. Why don't they wait for Ice Cream Sandwich? It'll be right around the corner from the SEPTEMBER launch date for Archos' tablets.

Archos last endeavors have been less than stellar. They have always put out products that spec wise should kick butt, but suck.

No hardware specs matter if the UI is horrible.

Everything looks great except that price tag. I thought they were just kidding about trying to sell at the same price as ipad....

On a side note, why do people shoot videos horizontally, turn your camera to the side to shoot video. Every TV I have ever watched is landscape. I wonder if this guy's TV at home is set up vertically?

This would be a prime opportunity for HP to demo tethering between a WebOS phone and tablet, especially since they won't offer a 3G/4G version for a while. It would make it look like they were showing off a feature (i.e. the simplicity of the hotspot app visible on the phone) rather than scraping by without cell service.

They could leave a Pre2 or Veer under glass or something with its hotspot turned on and linked to the TouchPads. Selling just one extra unit would pay for the extra hardware + data plan, and I suspect the ROI would be much better than that.

Would be curious to see more on the skype/twitter integration.

they need to load demos with app catalog access and/or tons of third party apps.

i tried a samsung 10.1. great looking but almost a useless demo because, nothing was loaded, no music, video, email, nothing. And right next to it was an ipad (at Frys) and it was loaded with 3rd party apps, you could browse the app catalog, even download a free apps.

presentation wise, the ipad came off like full of stuff to do and the samsung came off as a clone with very little ready to use and very bare bones.

HP shouldn't make samsung's mistake. especially since i think if someone ever actually loads up stuff on that samsung tablet it would be decent competition.

where is this filmed? Is that not one of the most important bits of info so we can go and see it for ourselves?

Nashville, Tenn

Looking plenty smooth.

What a little optimization can do.

I agree that they should have a phone next to it tethered to show off how they work together.

They should create a special version of the software that locks certain aspects, such as the tethering.

And has an app for demoing the hardware.

When I've tried some Android tablets in a verizon store, they had an app that kept kicking in to show me the features of the tablet.

Personally, I do not use those, I'd rather figure stuff out myself, but for most people I think it would be good. Especially if the device just cycled through the demo to catch peoples eye.

Palm had a demo app on the Pre and Pixi. (Dashboard notification: "Tap here to restart demo.")

The demo units supposedly have a different SKU, so that could easily mean a different software load.

It did have a "tap here to restart demo" button but I never saw the actual demo because it froze up. In the video that's what the black card is on the far right before I closed it.

I wonder if the App Catalog is live for the TouchPad? UI looks ver polished! Please let there be some awesome apps at launch! Of course he is using an iPhone4 to record it.

The photo does show 'Low Price' $599!!

I am going to Walmart after work today!!

The reflection makes it look like this vid is being recorded with an EVO or similar form factor.

I agree. Maybe he is on Sprint and had no other choice?

It's just an old iPhone 3GS in a case.

okay, so I called my local wal-mart, here's what happened...
"hi I was wondering if I could speak to someone in the electronics department"
--transferred
--several minutes later employee:'no one's pickin up, what were you needing, I could try and help'
me: "I was wondering if you guys had the hp touchpad yet, some stores have them, and I wanted to see one before I ordered"
employee: "I don't know if we have them yet, but we should be getting it soon".... before she transferred I heard "ooh she callin about the hp touchpad, I want one of them..." probably to her coworker.
--guy in the electronics department, clueless, and only after ringing a gazillion times...
So, maybe the tech department sucks, but at least people out there do know about it. Maybe the phone answerer should get promoted!

worst video....EVER. This is not a jab at the TP but at the guy with tremor hands or parkinsons that took the video.

I think he was nervous about being around it. Probably orgasmed.

clearly, he's ashamed to be around it. it has magical powers, and he wants it all to himself. rumor has it if he holds it in his hands he turns invisible. his precioussssssssssssss

Thanks for the jab. It was the only time I've recorded and demoed something at the same time. I've never claimed to be a professional. The only reason why I recorded it was really just to prove I saw it.

okay the shaking is one thing...but this really is a terrible demo...

-you didnt test the swipe up
-no scrolling smoothness tested
-no front vid cam tested
-no pinch to zoom smoothness (you tried zoom out??)
-no email app pane shifting
-software updates...really?? you tried to use the web, and that didnt work, so updates magically run on Narnian internet

and on top of that...1.5 mins?? i wuda come up with at least a 10 minute demo, come on homie. go back and do it right...for yourself, and all of us

it's easy to say what YOU would have done, but i don't know if i'd enjoy everyone staring at me laughing inside, wondering 'oh haha there's that nerd geek still recording that stupid video of that ipad! what a loser' while listening to the paint mixer going nonstop

I like the fact that it IS at WalMart, because a gazillion people will actually SEE it. Even if they don't sell well there, it is great for HP to have people be able to see it working. If only they can get the electronics department employees a little training...

Maybe I will head into as many Wally Worlds as possible to provide indirect training to there electronics dept employees when its official.

Ask about it, then after getting help start chatting it up about its features, etc, and getting the reps standing around to get in on my training section for the touchpad.

How big is WebOS 3.0? looking at the video, already 5Gigs are used up on the device with just the basic apps loaded.

I have not idea how much space it takes, but webOS 3.0 has both Mojo and Enyo frameworks for compatibility.

Maybe the demo data is a part of the 5GB?

I'm the one who sent this in. Sorry for the shaky video. It's harder than it looks to record and demo at the same time. I have much more respect now for those who do it professionally.

Thanks for the video, no matter the quality!

Please enlighten us as to which Walmart you found this displayed at. Many of us want to go play touchey feely with it.

Ok, he posted the location but apparently they removed it. Maybe they don't want the information to get out.

Guess I can give a hint and maybe they won't remove it.

Walmart is near the so called "Home of Country Music"

Right outside of Nashville, TN. It was on a late night run to get an audio cable and just happened to walk by it.

Which Walmart?

So, can I take a .ipk file into WalMart and test my Enyo app to see if it works outside the emulator?

I would definitely try it ;)

Did anyone noticed the Calendar app icon shown "16"? Look like this Walmart TP display came really sooner than the 19 preorder date (assuming "16" was June 16)

The video was recorded last night (June 22) so I'm not sure what is with the date on the calendar. It could just be that it wasn't set correctly when it got set up, and since there wasn't an interent connection it couldn't set the correct date automatically.

WOW! FAST!

Thanks. Too far for me. Those lucky enough to be near nashville are sure to enjoy this.

As well as the Wal Mart store employees there too.
Wonder if they will sell it for cash?

Nashville, too far for me.

Anybody near nashville gonna try to get one of the Walmart employees to sell this one early?

Make friends with a wal-mart employee, get their 10% discount. =)

This video sucks!! Can anybody tell me that given the chance he had you would not explore this thing in and out? Mostly inward(software wise)He could have answered a lot of question for us,like what the app catalog looks like as far as apps.I don`t see where it`s fast either. All he showed was a wallapaper, email app and that`s it. What did he show that shows the speed of the touchpad?? I love webos but I won`t be like a ios fan and give it props for nothing. Now if he was able to use the browser and see how fast it is then I`m all for it but not when he did`nt show anything that shows the speed. Why did`nt he explore more and why is the video so short??

I went to Best Buy to see when they would get it and they said "Touch What?"

just checked my local walmart...display is up (with pricing sticker) but no demo unit yet.

PS - aafes has the Touchpad!!!

Oh Snap! Go AAFES!

Thanks bud, I didn't think to look there but sure enough. No accessories though, keyboard, touchstone, cover, so I'll have to walk into Best Buy after all.

Just Ordered mine, 32GB. Hooah!

Order reads "Shipped direct from vendor", so no timeline. So I'll have to wait and see if I get an email updating the shipping status.

Done Deal. :)

UPDATE: Estimated Ship Date 6/27/2011

So that could put the Delivery Date maybe as soon as the 29th or 30th, oh how cool would that be!

Amazing at some of these comments. If you say you saw a demo touchpad at walmart but no picture of it, they say you suck, Pic or it didn't happen.
When you say you saw a demo unit and have video, then people still complain. I guess thats the internet for you -_-'

the only way they wouldn't complain is if you stole it from the store shelves, made 10,000 copies of it in your space-time alteration teleportation copy machine, and sent it to each and every pre-central member via rush processing same day delivery w/ insurance and delivery confirmation

And put it on Sprint

Wow. Looks snappy fast. Can't wait to get my hands on one.

To everyone saying that WalMart is a low-end store, think beyond the US.

While WalMart may be considered a cheap store here in the states, it is a VERY upscale store in other parts of the world (e.g. China). I've visited the largest WalMart/Sam's Club in China (also the largest in the world) and it is MASSIVE. I'm not sure what HP's plans are for the TouchPad in Asia, but with WalMart's upscale appeal and MASSIVE distribution network over there, it would be a tremendous hit.

Still don't see WalMart as an upscale store? I saw a $15,000 bottle of scotch over there, as well as jewelry in the tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars.

There are like 2000 dirty, broken down, walmarts in the U.S. full of off brand clothes and and styles that are not really "hip" or close to what you'd see in a nicer store. That and they are often located in rural areas and rural suburbs.

And the ones here don't have $15000 bottles of scotch and there surely aren't many customers out looking to buy it. It's surely not the norm.

Walmart as cheap isn't changing anytime soon cause some store in China is has good scotch. The walmart's hear have fishing tackle and shot gun shells.

like that peopleofwalmart website is actually real crazy people. Now i don't like walmart but as a business matter, lots of people go, and you want to be in walmart. It's a big deal.

One nice thing about Walmart...

You can use your American Express Card points to buy gift cards and use them to get the touchpad.

This looks smooth. I keep trying a Xoom and find it very laggy and not smooth. TP has a good chance
