RealPlayer SP Beta Converts Video for Your Pre 15

by Dieter Bohn Wed, 24 Jun 2009 2:58 pm EDT

RealNetworks has just announced a new version of their RealPlayer product, called RealPlayer SP, now in Beta.  It does all the same stuff that your old RealPlayer did, but they're keen to let you know that it will also convert video for you so that it's playable on a Palm Pre:

Play Internet video on nearly any device, including the Blackberry smartphones, a range of Nokia S60 devices, Palm Pre, iPhone, iPod, iTunes, Xbox, and many others through automatic conversion and transfer to the correct device format, including h.264, Mpeg4, Windows Media, QuickTime, and RealVideo.

It's Windows only and might be a good video conversion solution -- though for the full feature set you have to lay down $39.99 for the Plus version that can handle H.264.

Thanks to Mahootzki for the tip!

Or just get Doubletwist and stay away from Real garbage.

What version are you downloading ? Everything I do makes it open several pages over and over again and nothing downloads ?? Any help as to how I do this would be appreciated

ummmm, okay...or just download handbrake for free..

It'll be a cold day in hell before I fork over any money to Real.

Exactly. Stay away from anything from Realnetworks. Their marketing blabber wants people to believe there's something unique about their software that is letting all the listed devices play video, when all its doing is outputting to the open H.264 standard which the devices obviously already support- ironic considering if it was up to RA there would be no H.264 - they'd want everything .RA format. I don't get how these skunks stay in business, with all the missteps and attempts at monopolies. They were one of the earliest purveyors of DRM and the .RA format is the crappiest codec in history.

Dieter instead of giving free advertising to Real why not use the empty space to promote http://pre.uservoice.com so the community can vote on Pre feature requests.

I'll cast my ballot for handbrake or the excellent VideoLAN client (VLC). Surprised Real is still around.

Real...like blockbusters, and digital rights management and Palm. They're almost extinct. Oh wait...Palm had a comeback, but Real still sucks. Wouldn't touch that with a 10ft pole.

you know Real's big problem is that they do not listen to their customers and any company that does not listen to it's customers will fail sooner or later. I still use them. I do not use iTunes so I use real player to manage the palm pre as a media player and it works great for me.

I stopped using Real software back when Madonna was hot.

Speaking of video, woot.com is offering the Sling Media Slingbox SOLO for a bargain price ($99, instead of 4179). I'm very tempted, but I'd want to be sure that it would work on the Pre. Any update on the Sling/Pre relationship?

I'm surprised Real is still in business with the crap they put out.

what a waste. media coder is free and it works perfectly. i have been creating .mp4's for my Pre since I bought it and loading them via iTunes. works like a champ.

I am wholly unimpressed with DoubleTwist. It seems like it's trying to do too much with too little. If it scaled itself back a bit it might be okay.

I will give Handbrake and Media Coder a go, but I have already downloaded this new RealPlayer and will probably try it. Ease of use and quality output, if it delivers, is worth something, but $40?, no flipping way. Max I would ever consider is $20.

I dont understand why you would want to download this. What more can you do on your Pre if you get this installed?

The devil himself is trying to reclaim market share.

Friends don't let friends use Real (or buy Bose).
