Review: Word Ace 45
This app review brought to you by forum member Mononoko. Check out our Forum Review details here!
With six new apps that recently hit the App Catalog, Word Ace joined the ranks of webOS games. It can be clearly seen that this app by Self Aware Games is definitely the best official game out there. It is a great concept, looks sleek, and has great features and tracking. It is a sure pick up for any Pre owner, gamer or not.
Ed Note: You might even find yourself facing ACG4444, the Self Aware Games-declared Word Ace Champion (and PreCentral member) as of this writing! If you want to play Mononoko, hit up code 1835. Feel free to post your own friend codes in this thread.
The idea behind Word Ace is relatively simple. Being a cross between Texas Hold Em' and Scrabble, two very well known games, it won't be hard to pick up. The game starts by dealing you two 'cards' and giving you 400 chips. Each card contains a letter, and a number. The number represents how many points it will score you. The less common the letter (like in Scrabble), the more points it is worth.
A wave of betting is then sent around, and three community cards are played to the table. These cards are just like the those you were dealt, and may be used by anyone at the table to make words (as Texas Hold Em’ players will use them to build a winning hand). More letter cards come out and more betting opportunities come. Eventually the dealing ends with five letters in the middle, and two in your hand, making a total of seven. You must now try to create the best word you can, scoring as many points as possible. Word Ace is played entirely online, so you are facing real opponents with real knowledge that can make real mistakes (and really good words). The player with the highest-scoring word is then deemed as the winner and receives all the chips in the pot. Chips are accumulated, just as in poker, until one player has them all.
Word Ace harbors a nice point tracking system with achievements and lifetime stats. It is easy to use, looks sleek, and seems like it will take a while to get all those achievements. The music is high quality, though it can be turned off in the settings page. As of now, that is the only setting in this page. Also, the game can be played offline as well as online; offline being played against the computer, in this case your Pre. In online play, you can add players to your friend list and start private games with them. It is a nice little feature to have.
Overview of Features
- Online play
- Integrated game lobby and chat room (chat while you play)
- Achievements that will have you coming back
- Nice progress tracking
- Beautifully sleek look
- Customizable Icons (default, positive, and negative). Just swipe the default during play for pos/neg change
Overall, this is a great game, and I cannot wait to see what's in store in the updates. Download it, trust me, you'll like it.
Word Ace is currently available for free in the webOS App Catalog. Self Aware Games has stated that they intend for Word Ace to continue to be free for the foreseeable future.

this game is great, and cant wait for the texas hold em' version to come out!
I've tried the practice mode three times and don't get how this game works. First, you have to bet almost everything to get a look at the community cards. Fine, that's probably just lame AI programming. What I don't get is that I make my word, click the Use This Word button, and then the timer runs out and it declares me a loser for not using a valid word. Huh? COMB isn't a word? Maybe to a hippie, but WTF?
Thanks for the info. How effing stupid do you have to be to include a practice mode that DOESN'T WORK?!?!? That's some really smart coding and app store management there. Pffft.
The update is live, as of this morning! Download 0.9.10, and the dictionary's fixed! Sorry for the inconvenience.
The article/review is a little confusing. First it says that the game is "played entirely online" and then later it says it can be played "offline".
personally. i don't like it. best 'word' game on the pre - Word Whirl. simple, addictive, and it will help your vocabulary. word ace looks nice and has some good functions but is a bit confusing at first glance. and to me its just simply not fun.
I can't find the Word Ace App in the list of homebrew apps. Am i looking in the wrong place? Please help thank you
Yes, look in the App Catalogue.
Yeah, I played against ACG4444 and it was not fun. Sure, I beat him a few times and the competition was fun, but his attitude was annoying. The first round he would raise the bet to close to 400, and if you had more, in the following rounds he would bet the amount that the player with the most money had. In other words, every time you lost, you were out of the game and that was extremely annoying. It was also annoying to have to bet all your money or not play. Of course, he having $20,000 didn't help.
ACG4444> If you want to show off your word list, that's great and it can be fun. But make it fun for the rest of us by not making us bet all our money every hand.
This is a great game, I spent about 8 hours on it yesterday and I loved it. It is definitely my favorite game on my Pre.
Good review.
I'm down, i'm up to about 15k chips, and i rarely loose :) 3965. Lets do it!
Just my opinion, but I don't think any of the "games" official or homebrew on the Pre are any good. The homebrew games are all text based and if they have graphics of some kind, they suck! And the official games aren't any better. I love this phone, but so far the software being released for it... is real bad.
JAVA GAMES AREN'T GOING TO CUT IT!
Dope Wars, Xbox Live Friends and PrePackage are the only decent apps available.
These aren't Java games. That said, when will you be releasing your ultra-fun games?
I think the lack of good titles on this phone have people reaching!
There's nothing else available so when something new comes out everyone's giving it more credit then it deserves.
I disagree. I had an iPhone and one of the games I loved and played the most was Live Poker. Live Poker is almost identical to Word Ace. The GUI seems to be the same level and what you can do is very similar. It also has chat capabilities along with friends.
This game might not be your cup of tea, but I love it and it has nothing to do with not having a lot of games out there because when I had hundreds of games to choose from on the iPhone, I choose an equivalent game.
Guess that's why I still like to play Connect4!
I love this game but rather a Texas Hold'em version.
I can't believe we are still missing the good ole Hold'em.
I've noticed this as well. I really like the game, but when someone comes up with something like JOWAR (just a sample from scrabble.com), I have to believe that they're cheating. I wonder if there is a way to police this - run an algorithm that tracks a player's usage of the 'best' possible words and kicks them off if their playing is too perfect. Probably not practical and cheaters would adapt.
Or have this app disable the web browser. Then you can either play or browse the web, but not both.
Does anyone know how badly this drains the battery or is it pretty typical for most apps?
Seems typical. I played it the other night on a low battery and was fine.
I keep getting a download failed response every time I try and download it. Anyone having the same problem?
Yes, it was telling me I'm out of room, although I have almost 7GB free! I thought perhaps it was limited by the number of apps installed or the "application space" vs. the "data space" and so deleted a couple of apps and got the "installation failed" message.
Interesting... So far I have deleted 3 of my precentral apps, and this program STILL tells me I don't have enough space to install it. Why?
I don't think he cheats either...if he did, I wouldn't have beaten him a few times. I just don't like that he raises the pot a lot. But that's fine, that's his style. I just go play other players who don't bet as much.
I love this game
its a great game... except for that ASSMAN guy. i don't like him
