Rotate Image Worker Pro to portrait orientation 7

by Adam Marks Fri, 04 May 2012 6:13 pm EDT

IW Pro PrefsImage Worker Pro, by MetaViewSoft, is an app that will allow you to edit your photos directly on your webOS device, giving you the ability to resize, crop, rotate, adjust brightness, and so much more (check out our review of IW Pro, although note that MetaView is actively updating the app and there may have numerous enhancements and bug fixes since our review). One of the updates to the app has been to change its rotation so that it's always in a landscape mode. While this works better on the TouchPad, you may prefer the app to work in a portrait orientation on a webOS phone. Although there is no preference within the app itself to change the rotation, MetaView added a homebrew solution for you to manually adjust it. The easiest way to do this is by using the text editor within the homebrew file manager app Internalz Pro and following the directions below:

  1. Close Image Worker Pro, if opened
  2. Open up Internalz Pro and navigate to /media/cryptofs/apps/usr/palm/applications/de.metaviewsoft.printimagepro/
  3. Find the prefs.txt file, tap on it, and select "Open" to open up the text editor.
  4. Towards the bottom of the file, find the row that says "ORIENT=".
  5. Update the row to say "ORIENT=1"
  6. Swipe down from the top-left to reveal the Application dropdown menu and select "Save File".
  7. Close the file
  8. Next time you open the app, it will now be in portrait mode

Note that you may need to make this change every time MetaView updates the app (which is rather often).

Image Worker Pro is available in the webOS App Catalog for $1.99 and is compatible with all webOS devices running webOS 1.4.5 or higher

I don't get it: MetaView is a talented developer. What is the point? The app is great, but a bit of a turn off aesthetically stuck in the PDK land...why not simply implement autorotate, a toggle in the preference, device detection?

A portrait photo in landscape (and vice versa) displays so much smaller. If I want to edit a portrait photo, then a landscape, all I have to do is a simple eight-step procedure INSTEAD OF SIMPLY ROTATING THE DEVICE?

I expect tweaks and patches to the OS and built-in apps that we can't change, but to have to homebrew customize an app of an active developer is just sad.

Putting an article like this on the front page is not exactly an good advertisement for the dev, or the state of webOS either.

Here's an idea, just build in the ability to do switch in one of those rather-often-updates.

Ok, you don't get it, let me explain the reason bhind this:
Image Worker is a PDK app. This has advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages:
It runs on everything from 1.4.5 up to the newest devices
For me it's easier to maintain such a big app in C than it would in Javascript.
It's not affected of any canvas.toUrl bugs and such to manipulate image data

Disadvantages:
UI is a bit difficult to implement Device orientation in PDK looks somehow broken
Recreating base SDL surface on runtime (when the user rotates the device) will crash the device after a short time

The easiest way to have it portrait for people who want it in portrait, is an option which is examined on startup. Maybe in a future update you get the option trigger-able from inside the app. But you will need to restart the app to make the change happen.

Thanks, MetaView. I was a little excited when I wrote that; must have gotten up on the wrong side of the bed. I get it now: to optimize code and ensure backward compatibility (something Palm/HP decided not to respect) you end up getting shafted by bugs in the OS, in both SDK and PDK environments. Argh.

I've purchased both on-device image editing apps, and I absolutely love ImageWorker.

I'm going to set up the directory as a favorite to switch more quickly. Thanks.

I followed the path but I can't seem to edit the text.....internals in mastermode

what am I missing?

ok pre2 opened to Quickoffice...checked preware for text editor but got an error installing it.....what editor should I use....your image shows the prefs.txt opened in internals pro

what am I missing...image worker pro in portrait would be awesome

Sounds like I need to add an Internalz Pro tip here.  Open Internalz Pro, Prefrences, and then under Text Editor ensure that "register as file handler" is set to on.  Then, go to Default Apps ( see http://www.webosnation.com/adjust-your-default-applications ) and ensure that .TXT is set to Internalz Pro.

thanks I got internals pro as my text editor....I edited the prefs.txt file by adding the 1 after the ORIENT= To show ORIENT=1 and then swiped done and choose save file....

opened up image worker pro but no change its still in landscape....I rebooted no change...

the only thing I see is my prefs.txt file reads different than yours

my says..
