Round Table: Wallpaper

Welcome to Round Table, which is in fact not a table at all. Round Table is a continuing series on PreCentral where we pose a question to the staff and they provide their thoughts and insights. The question could be something simple like “what’s your favorite webOS app?” or something a bit more complicated, like “why did Palm choose the creepy lady?” Or maybe we’ll just end up chatting about our favorite version of Law & Order, you never know. Today, however, we're taking a more personal look at ourselves and our devices and putting our wallpapers on the line. Check it out, after the break.

Craig: I am using the Shaun White wallpaper from the U.S. Olympic Medalists thread. The black background looks great on the black phone. I especially like how it look with the clear launcher and icons from the iPhone Black Launcher. The icons seem like they were designed for this background but it is just a coincidence. Typically I use the dark wallpapers from the Music Player (Remix) Wallpaper Gallery because they look so good with the iPhone Black Launcher theme.

But this Shawn White photo is a special case!

Derek: My wallpaper is a tribute to my geekiness, especially as a Star Trek fan. If you follow me on Twitter you've likely seen me post an occasional 3D render of a model I'm working on - the Akira-class starship. Yeah, I'm an editor on a website dedicated to a niche smartphone and a Star Trek fan that tinkers around in Cinema 4D making spaceships. Derek Kessler: Übergeek, at your service. This is an at-warp render of the ship - at this time the model wasn't exactly super-detailed, so stretching into zoom-fast warp speed made for a quick dynamic background for my laptop, and eventually my phone. 3D modeling is something I do in my spare time when the mood strikes me, and while I'm nowhere near as proficient as those that are paid to do this, I do enjoy it and am proud of the progress I've made with my modeling since picking it up a few years ago. Plus it makes up for the fact that I'm too much of a klutz to try and build a physical model of this thing.

Dieter: My wallpaper is my great great grandfather on my mother's mother's side. His name was Nels and he's pictured here doing his job as a blacksmith - grinding a plow. I like it because it's visually striking but not too distracting (I prefer my wallpapers dark). Actually, I like it because it reminds me of my heritage of Nordic work ethic.

Jason: Up until a while ago, I had the dark "I Can Haz Pre" PreCentral wallpaper, as a testament to how incredibly long I had waited before I got a Pre. My current wallpaper is this nice textured Canadian flag.  As my friends will tell you, I love Canada, and I thought this specific wallpaper fit well.  The textured red and white looks great with the quick launch bar over it, and most importantly, it doesn't make the lock screen clock look bad. In addition, the red bars on the sides gives a nice framing look to the device's screen and when cards are minimized.

Jonathan: I tend to rotate among pics I’ve taken with my Pre’s camera, often of low-flying aircraft. In this case, this is a pic that I also managed to crop directly on my Pre, by zooming in the pic viewer and then taking a screenshot. I like the colors, as well as the way the gull in the upper-left corner appears to be the same size as the landing airplane.

Robert: I dig cityscapes - my current background is downtown Portland Oregon viewed from the east side of the Willamette at night - alternating between those kinds of pictures and ones that I take with the phone.  This particular background makes the phone, and the lock screen especially, look cool with its darker, subdued tones.

Chuq Von Rospach, Developer Community Manager, Palm, Inc: I’ve created a set of wallpapers that are free for people to use; this is one of the first; I’ll be doing more down the road. The first set is designed to help promote a cause I’m supporting, Images Without Borders, where photographers can donate images for sale to raise funds for Doctors Without Borders and their work in Haiti. I've put a post on my blog explaining the whole thing. I currently have five images available through Images Without Borders, and five wallpapers of those images available for free use from the links in that posting.

So that's what we have on our phones. How about you?
