Rumor: Pre Plus and Pixi Plus headed to O2 in April 27

by Derek Kessler Thu, 18 Mar 2010 1:48 pm EDT

Euro Palm Pre Plus As the title says, the Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus are rumored to be headed to European carrier (and current webOS carrier) O2 in April of this year. If true, it would mark the first time that the Pixi or Pixi Plus has been made available outside the United States. The anonymous tip, sent in to the popular UK technology blog Tracy and Matt, indicates that the two phones will be identical to the devices available on Verizon. With the notable exception of having GSM radios instead of CDMA.

In addition to the Pixi coming to Europe, this would also be the first time a “successor” webOS device appeared on the same network as the original, in this case the Pre Plus appearing alongside or replacing the older Pre on O2. The Pre Plus has been certified in Europe for some time, though we had always expected that was for SFR. Additional details such as pricing, exact release date, plans, and unlock status, were not available.

There is one potential wrench in the works here, though - Palm requested that the FCC keep details on the P101UEU confidential until September 11th. So while it's looking like a GSM Palm Pre Plus is a sure thing, when and where it will land is still murky.

Why? The Pre hasn't worked that well here so why will the Pre Plus? Palm, please take note We need apps for the UK user. What is the point of selling yet another phone that will not have any decent apps? No Tube app, No UK News app, No UK travel apps, No UK Newspaper apps, No UK sports aps!! I know you dont write them but get in touch with the developers of those shiny, worthwhile apps that the iPhone user has and work some magic. The Pre has been out for 6 months here, not one of the above apps is there for us to use so what will people do? Yes thats right, they will buy a phone that will have those apps ready to go!!

If there aren't any decent apps it won't sell, as simple as that and what does the paid app store hold for us.....none of the above i bet.

It's up to the developers in UK. Kinda doubt a North American developer writing an app for UK would work that well.

But again, Palm's at fault for not having proper developer units (no, the discounted Verizon and Sprint units don't count... I'm talking carrier-free devices.)

I agree that a US developer won't write say a UK sports app or London Underground app but Palm should of had developers in the UK all lined up well before it was released here.

The Pre Plus will not sell unless there are apps such as the ones i have mentioned above, simple and i would of thought Palm would know that. Go to any o2uk shop and the sales rep will say the same, 'people like the Pre but the iPhone has better apps' This would include the apps i would like to see. 6 months in the UK and not none of the above apps and i doubt the Pre Plus will change that and i doubt paid apps in the UK will either.

Totally agree. I've been waiting for a tube app for months now, as well as sky news or something similiar and a decent football app. When paid apps finally come about in the UK if there isn't a flood of new, decent apps i'll be very disappointed. I'm willing to stick with Palm and will probably end up buying the Pre 2 if and when that comes out though

Up grade to 1.4WebOS for Youtube !

Uh... Tube App is not YouTube... they're talking about subway/rail system in UK.

I'm going to Europe in July and will spend four days in London. I plan to have a Palm Pre by then. I would love to see a Tube app in the App Catalog!

hopefuly there'll be a wide-rent-a-bike system working, so no need for any apps supporting overcrowded, overheated underground (there's nothing interesting under the ground). and for that simple gps app will do.

Good grief... O2 again?

When will Palm ever learn...

Tell you what I will happily upgrade my pre for the pre plus, at least now I can use all that 16gb for apps and my music. Sorted.

Bring it on......

flash, overseas apps and new phones revealed next week stay tuned!

I was hoping the Pre Plus would arrive in the UK on Vodafone :o(

I hope that comes to Spain at the same time. I'm waiting for buy my Pre Plus

Well...7 months after the GSM version landed now the 16GB version...that is a short time for an upgrade...I'll skip this one and wait for a new webOS device...but good for palm...and hopefully this will speed up sales in Europe...unlocked this should be interesting.

Are there any UK WebOS developers out there that we know of? The app store would make me think no to that but are there?

I doubt it, at the most, an anemic amount. Why would a UK developer make UK specific apps for a phone that doesn't allow them to sell apps in the UK market to UK users?

I'm a web developer and I gave up because of all the geo-descrimination. Now the playing field looks to finally be levelling out so who knows...

I agree that there are a seriously inadequate number of UK based apps. I moved to the Pre via the iPhone and I also have a Nokia N900 for work. I love it, it's a super phone but the way that Palm have focused on the US apps only (we only get a live store 6 months after release??) is very poor. As an early adopter I have been annoyed at the way Europe has been treated by Palm, we are like an afterthought, and we could really help to boost sales as well as brand awareness.

I dont want or need a Starbucks app that gives me the closest shop as Times Square. Or American sports apps, not a lot of people outside of America really follow American sports. What about a Premier league app? if they even had a bloody live store the BBC would write their own app the way they have done for other platforms.

This is something Apple did really well, to support the locale they were releasing in. I use a Nokia N900 as they favour Europe and their hardware is second to none. I love the Pre but if I need to knock out a mail for work there isn't a better keyboard known to man.

If PAlm release the Pre Plus I would be very happy, I don't really want a bigger screen or a change of anything other than the keyboard and the extra storage, 8GB is terrible in this age of smart-phones. (My Nokia supports 64GB). get it released an into the market Palm, get those flashy American ads running instead of that weird androgynous woman who weirds everyone out!

I love WebOS, I think it would be perfect for even a small tablet (something Palm could consider while keeping the mobile version exclusive), but I really need to start feeling the love.

Dammit, and I just upgraded to a Pre at the beginning of this month! Ah well, It's still the best phone I ever used - and something new is _always_ just around the corner!

Regarding apps - I received an email from Palm saying that paid apps were coming at the end of this month, when that happens I imagine that there will be more incentive for UK app developers to come out of the woodwork. No point developing a paid-for app if there's no way to get it in the official app store!

soo uhm..yeah..can I haz sprint pre plus? NAO?!

Excellent news. My 02 contract is up early in May so that'll be perfect timing to upgrade my (ebay-sourced) Pre.

oh PLEEEZE let this be true! And there be some way of unlocking!

a QWERTY pre plus? awesome!!

So Palm might be generous enough to grant us UK users access to paid apps for a few weeks before releasing an upgraded phone? Thanks guys. Before anyone responds with the usual early adopter comments I think we can all agree that Pre owners in the UK (and elsewhere) have gotten a pretty raw deal thus far.

Please...I need an unlocked one to replace my O2 Palm Pre with Rebel Sim II...could'nt be better if I can buy it online from Plam just like Nexus One.

Everyones getting excited, but is this even true? Seems like a rumour only.

Anyone here with actual confirmation? ...because the O2 do not know much about the Pre Plus / Pixi Plus and April is less than 2 weeks away!

I am sure Europe will price palm too, i am goung to visit Europe as i need to order research papers. So i'll have chance to check palm success there
