Rumor (Redux): Verizon to get Updated Pre 40
If you’re looking for a way to irritate Pre owners on Sprint and Bell, here’s a good one: Verizon won’t be getting the Pre currently released, instead they’ll be getting one that’s been updated. The Examiner claims that the version of the Palm Pre to be received by Verizon will in fact be updated. The rumored updated Pre will be “one that has more memory (or a micro-SD slot), has a slightly bigger screen, and one that fixes the screen bleed problem.”
We’re going to put on our skeptic hats and say that only two of those four speculations are even remotely possible: fixing the screen bleed (which newer Pres appear to have already addressed) and more internal storage memory. At this point Palm is not going to backtrack and add a micro-SD slot or any other memory expansion port to the Pre. Nor is Palm going to make a Pre with a larger screen, as doing so would require a significant redesign of the phone, in which case it probably wouldn’t be the Pre anymore.
In fact, more memory seems likely given the leaked Verizon inventory screen we saw a month ago. If you’ll recall, the inventory showed two new Palm devices: the P101VZW and the P121VZW (the Pre on Sprint is the P100). At the time we speculated that the P121 was the Pixi, but a later Sprint inventory screen that showed a P120 and a C40 put the kibosh on that thought. So the P120/P121VZW must be an upgrade Pre of some variety, and the only logical conclusion is that it has more memory, likely 16 GB instead of the current 8 GB. So will Verizon get an updated Pre? Probably, but so will Sprint (and probably Bell), so we can all relax, be happy, and store more.

Keep passing the FUD!!!
Listen it doesnt matter Verizon is getting the Pre. By the time Verizon gets it Sprint will have the same updates..Why oh Why would you spend $40.00 a month more for a hypet up Network..Sprint is just as good or better for $69.99 Unl everything...Verizon & AT&T over rated and over priced..
If anything, they need to improve the materials and/or the process of the hinges. They come off way too easily. I'm not builder, but it seems like such a minor problem to have.
I think the micro sd is possible. The GSM model has a SIM card, so applying the same as a micro sd would be possible...Although I think an internal 8gb upgrade would make more sense
Thats bull!!! Thats why im switching to the Hero! Palm is full of it...!!
I forgot that technology is actually not supposed to progress. Thanks for the reminder.
This is only a rumor at this point. Don't believe everything you read on the internet. When the VZ phone is out then believe.
Why would Verizon getting an slightly updated Pre make you want to switch to a Hero? As if Android's widget based OS could somehow hold a candle to WebOS! As if Palm updating the Pre 6 months after the 1.0 is somehow a slap in the face! It's like you are saying, "You shouldn't change anything until the Pre 2, is release, Palm!!"
You are so ridiculous!
If not having a microSD and only 8GB is "BULL" and it bothered you so much, why did you get a Pre in the first place?
a1aone makes a reasonable point... How much memory will the hero have and will it have a microsd slot?
ROM: 512 MB, RAM: 288 MB , the Hero can handle up 32GB microSD.
These rumors are getting out of control! Last week it was Verizon wasn't even going to get the Pre because it doesn't sell enough, then the next day, Verizon confirms they are getting it, then now its a better pre than the one we have. Who the hell cares! :)
no kidding. Besides if palm is to do well it needs to progess. And if it does we all benefit.
Agreed. These are only rumors. Wait for the phone to be officially announced to see what is true.
I agree with volcom45... These rumors are beginning to just be plain silly. If palm were to come out with a new Pre, who cares? The fact is that technology is ALWAYS advancing and there WILL be bigger, better, faster technology in the future. Be happy with what you have and enjoy your Pre. it is a sweet phone for all I care!
Maybe i'll wait til bell gets an upgrade... i wonder if it's worth the wait.
16 gb internal.. "forever" expandable sd slot (which i would loooove).. whatever the case.. i say do it.. more power to ya.. how can anyone complain about advancements.. i guess some people are never satisfied.. EVERYTHING is overpriced so we should be used to it.. in the words of charlie murphy "buy a new one, you rich mothafuc*a!" lol
I called this. I alos have no problem with it. Seriously, once I made my choice i understood that a newer\bigger\shinier Pre would probably come skipping down the line sooner or later. In 2 years I'll reassess where I am, right now it currently has been better than I could have imagined (for a amartphone, anyway....).
Just got 20% battery warning :(
getting my violin...
Finally a good comment! LOL
How is that the author can begin the article with:
"If you
Umm, duh. Of course they would get an upgraded Pre. And so will the other carriers. Just like there were updated Treo's, Blackberry's, and the iPhone. Remember how Apple nailed their loyal early adopters - huge price decreases and improvements.
Technology will always improve. That's the downside of being an early adopter - the next version will be better.
I like the Pre just like it is but I have to wait for Verizon. If it's not confirmed by Jan, I may switch to Sprint and forget about the termination fee.
With Sprint you will never, ever, ever, pay more than $69/month with the "Unlimited-Anytime mobile/ 450 min Everything Data plan"! Plus Sprint's EvDoRevA is faster than VZ's EvDoRevA; you just can't go wrong with Sprint.
I switched my family from from VZ to Sprint on June 6th. Sprint's data network is faster. When there is no Sprint voice coverage it roams to Verizon's network free-of-charge anyway (up to 50% of your time can be roaming). Mobile-to-mobile is now free, regardless of the carrier. Sprint's plans are super cheap. Sprint tends to get the latest phones first compared to Verizon. Sprint's app catalog will likely be better than Verizon's. Sprint's GPS is free. Sprint's Family Locator Service is only $5/month for entire family (up to 5 phones) -- great value add service that gives me piece of mind and avoids many "where are you now?" phone calls and potentially dangerous text messages (if recipient is driving).
I will NOT be switching back to Verizon.
Thanks guys for the info on Sprint. I was wondering about coverage in my area of CT, but if it roams to Verizon, that's fine too. I use more data and texting than voice anyway.
I may just have to switch - just have to decide on whether or not I want to pay the early termination fee to Verizon.
Can't wait hopefully it comes out on sprint too, I said since day one the Palm Pre screen is to small.
Did you even read the article? Is is nigh upon 0% likelihood that the screen will be bigger
Another thing to keep in mind is that the Verizon Pre will probably be getting a better radio. Broadcom won a patent lawsuit against Qualcomm that forced Qualcomm to use workarounds for their CDMA radios. Verizon paid off Broadcom so that they could get better radios without the workaround. I'm sure Verizon insisted on the better radios when they negotiated their contract with Palm earlier this year.
The lawsuit has since been settled so all carriers will be getting radios without the workaround eventually. Hopefully this will mean better coverage for everyone.
Thank you for that highly relevant bit on info, much appreciated.
got my pre out of contract so in about a year my contract will end and I'm sure by that time there will be a better version of the pre. Every year or so they'll be coming up with new stuff. That's what happens in tech world. Freaking kindle is already on num. 2.
I hope verizon does get it..the more ppl with palm web os the better :-)
I wouldnt complain if I already owned a Pre but its pretty frustrating sitting here waiting for a European launch and see such a rumour. If its true it means me and fellow Europeans have waited for 6 months for a launch and around the same time a upgraded version is released in the US.
But who knows, perhaps the unlocked version that wont hit us until next year will be a upgraded model.
16 GB? Please, just jump right to 32 to at least match the iPhone
Verizon will not be the only carrier to have this "updated" palm pre. they may be getting one that is an upstage of the current one, but i promise Sprint will have access to the new one as well. heck, they may even introduce this "updated" palm pre on sprint before Verizon gets theirs
Considering the above-mentioned inventory stats for Sprint, it seems like a given they'll have the new version and possibly available for the holidays. Another reason that Palm needed to do the secondary stock sale...massive production increases for not just two products, but three, and for (as of 2009) three carriers, a few months later to become four or five carriers.
I read that articleearlier in the day. The quote here is out of context ):
It does not say the Pre will hve any of those things bit simply mentions any of those those things COULD be the update.
VZ is getring different version, the inventory number was leaked to be "101" where the Sprint versiob is "100".
Let's remember that VZs updates to their phones are usually not updates bu removed features.
Even if they get an updated pre, unless it has a larger screen, no button and a side sliding qwerty, I'm not worried the least.
man, i guess i should start saving my money now.. ugh...
Please, the very moment that you have more information on this, post away! My contract with Verizon is up tomorrow, and I can't decide whether or not to buy now or in January. :/ I would *really* like 16 GB.
just to clarify things, verizon already tweeted confirmation that they ARE indeed getting the palm pre early 2010. hehe as a verizon customer im giddy with excitement. sorry for spelling errors!
