Rumor: Verizon phasing out the Pre Plus? 33

by Robert Werlinger Tue, 24 Aug 2010 9:50 am EDT

Engadget has it on good word (and by good word me mean the internal inventory screenshot shown above) that Verizon is actively phasing out the Pre Plus along with a number of other devices that have gotten long in the tooth including the Storm 2 and the Curve 8530.  It could be that they're making way for the successor of the Pre, a device rumored to be on the way. It could also be that Verizon is taking Palm's "Life Moves Fast" motto to heart.

I mean all we can hope is that they are making space for something new. Heh they don't want to have less options than Sprint now do they? If they just saying eff HPalm then its more for us Sprint people (joking of course I think all should enjoy the glory that will be webOS 2.0).

Why would they phase out the Pre and keep the Pixi. I haven't used the Pixi before, but from what I understand, isn't it inferior to the Pre???

either because they still have too many of them, or because Palm told them there isn't another candy-bar phone coming and it fits a particular spot in their strategy. or because it is selling well enough to continue.

Do you think this means VZ Palm Pre Plus owners (such as myself) will not get the 1.4.5 update? That would be depressing :(

By the look of things, I'd be more worried about getting the 2.0 update this fall from Verizon. Who knows how long it will take them to release the updae IF they decide to do so.

I'm more concerned about 1.4.5; as hopefully a new Pre 2 will be out when 2.0 is released - and I'll be grabbing the new hardware. AT ANY COST ;-)

Hope this does not mean Sprint will be second on the list, sorry Verizon fans, just sayin.

For those who don

Verizon ran those commercials with the mom and sticky notes that advertised solely the Pre.

Since when do you have to make room for a phone that hasn't been announced yet? Do the phones take up that much physical space?

UntidyGuy.. It could mean a new phone. All HP/Palm would do is the same thing Apple does to AT&T... Lets them know but has them under a confidentiality agreement. So it wouldn't surprise me if both Verizon and Sprint know something but under contract cannot speak of what's going on... Cause if a new phone was being made well then it needs to be field tested which would mean having access to their networks.

there was that Pre2 thing floating around last week at Verizon and numerous reports including myself that certain Sprint reps are acting weird when asked about a new Palm device.. Like almost a little excited about something and quickly change subjects..

it could be nothing but speculations because at this point we want to believe there's something coming shortly and we will look too far into some things..... Or it could be something big and surprising about ready to bust out...

Beep Beep!

certain Sprint reps are acting weird when asked about a new Palm device.. Like almost a little excited about something and quickly change subjects..

That's kinda funny, and reminds me of when a father knows that his daughter's boyfriend will ask her to marry him because the guy is upstanding and asked the dad first. The dad is just too damn excited, but has been sworn to secrecy.

Or it could just meant that they are finally running through their inventory that they've had since the Spring and they have decided not to order anymore.

Hasnt been announced to the general public. Any phone that could be launch into 2010 is probably already being tested in whatever carrier it needs to be tested or at the very least the carrier knows about it and about a targeted release date.

The speculation is that they wont ask for more pres if a new phone that is targeted to replace the pre will be launched by the time the pre is going to get out of stock.

It's been out for awhile and supplies are getting thin hence the phase out. I wouldn't doubt that the CDMA model is no longer being manufactured. With the announcement of the PalmPad another phone is likely

They're keeping the Pixi Plus though, which is interesting.

The lack of leaks from Sprint is not comforting. Either Palm is doing a heck of a job keep the leaks quiet or nothing is coming. I don't want to jump ship to verizon :(

HP has a lot of money and just a hair less pull then Apple.. And except for the "oops I left my iphone4 at a bar" incident Apple has been able to keep AT&T tight lipped about new devices.. What's to say HP/Palm pretty much made specific orders to both carriers to keep super tight lipped about what was going to happen new device wise.

the whole WebOS 2.0 "Road Runner" thing is quite interesting.. It could be part of PalmPad development yes... However... The name "Road Runner" is kinda suspicious.. When HTC was working on the EVO 4G it was originally known as the "Super Sonic".. It would make sense to call a phone with similar if not slightly better specs then the EVO to be codenamed "Road Runner"..

it could be a wimax/LTE device or just a device with a 1.? Ghz processor in it with Linux instant start etc...

of course Sprint will stay more to the game plan and zero leaks.. They have more to lose.. They may be gaining ground against everyone with pricing of plans and customer service.. But they have more to lose if they don't get the new Palm device.. Sprint has the EVO and the Epic and the Palm Pre... That's 3 devices compared to Verizons Droid, DroidX, Droid2, Droid incredible, numerous blackberrys etc.. So ya Sprints gonna be a bit more tight lipped and play along with HP.. They need the new Palm device more then Verizon or AT&T does.

just saying

"Apple has been able to keep AT&T tight lipped about new devices.. "

But you knew there was a new device. What the details were was kept quiet.

But they weren't quiet - at least not like Palm is - about having a new deliverable.

I was at sprint yesterday and the said that there phasing out the pre and the pixi. pre should be gone by 10/10 and the pixi sometime in December.

yeah, I got a touchstone at BB on clearance for $19

best buy has been clearancing pre accessories for weeks now. It's clear that the new phone is on the way. I'm glad they have been tight lipped about it. They need to make a splash.

During the time of the HP acquisition and after VZW launch, there was an enormous stockpile of inventory of CDMA phones (Sprint and Verizon), and all the analysts said it would take many months (I recall like the rest of the year) just to sell through the then current inventory at the then current rate. Therefore, it may be purely for this reason that HPalm has yet to release a device. Also, unrelated note, if anyone noticed PreCentral had 1.6 million facebook for webos users reported on Aug. 13. As of this morning, I count 2.7 million Facebook for webOS users! Anybody care to shed light on this one? One million new webOS/FB users in two weeks!?!

Bell Canada officially says the Palm Pre is "discontinued"

I believe O2 in Germany said the same thing last week or the week before. Might have been Vodafone, I'm not sure. The story is archived on here somewhere. They stopped carrying the Pre, and switched to the Pre Plus.

Yes, but Bell Canada never had the Pre Plus, and say they won't be getting it. Kinda strange, because they've been doing a fair amount of promotion on it for the last few months - maybe to clear out inventory? They're been hard to find in stock lately.

Interesting. My guess would be that they're just low on stock and won't be ordering more. Time will tell whether that's because they want to clear space for a new Palm phone, or because they're just going to discontinue carrying the Pre period.

Palm needs to have a ""leak" a'la Apple.

per verizon website "Palm Pre" is out of stock when I tried to upgrade my other line, but Pixi still avail. based upon what I seen " a new Palm pre" will debut SOON!

im telling you the phone should have aliens come down to my house from ooooutter space to backwards engineer the PRE 2.. if not ill be upset or something really close.. im holding out

Pre/Pixi-Plus phones will continue to be available through HPalm on-line stores, I hope.

Is Verizon clearing out Palm accessory inventory? I recently mail ordered and received a Touchstone and Verizon charger package for $9.99 from verizonwireless.com. They also have the same combo with a case for $14.99 and the Touchstone by itself for $14.99.

just to let you know that they are phasing them out. when i went into a verizon wireless store, he told me that they were not going to be carrying them anymore soon
