Rumor: Verizon Pixi facing issues, orders reduced? 21

Verizon Pixi

If Commercial Times is to be believed (and that's not always a lock), the Palm Pixi headed for Verizon may be in some form of notorious Verizon trouble. Verizon has a reputation in the cell phone world for holding up releases for an almost interminable period of time until they meet their stringent standards. While that has resulted in a great network, it also means that their customers are sometimes (often) frustrated by the delays new phones face.

Palm is not getting any special treatment from Big Red, as it seems the Pixi’s software “has failed to pass tests conducted by Palm’s client, Verizon Wireless.” Commercial Times reports that Palm has reduced its Pixi order from ODM partner Compal Communications from 800,000 units in Q4 2009 to 600,000 units. They also expect that the Pixi will not begin shipping en masse to until Q1 2010. So while we do expect that the Pre will launch on Verizon early next year (we’re thinking soon after the CES event), the Pixi may take a bit longer.

It is worth noting that Commerical Times also reported back in March that the Pre was delayed until the end of this year. That didn't really work out, so set aside a few grains of salt before taking this rumor to the bank.

Derek: do you sleep dude?

Not nearly enough, it would seem.

So Verizon had no problem with the original Blackberry Storm, but for some reason the Pixi isn't good enough?

I don't think that is what they are saying. Who knows, maybe Verizon got wind of the fact the webOS 1.3.5 was being rolled out and they wanted to make sure that their customers experience the greater performance and enhanced battery life that cames with this new update.

Reason for the delay...

If Verizon received the Pixi in the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2009, webOS 1.3.5 would not have been installed on it. So this is a good move by Verizon.

This gives Verizon the opportunity to deliver a phone with faster performance and greater battery life. So this decision is good for both Verizon and Palm.

I owned the blackberry storm and if i were a potential nfl quarterback i would play with this phone before draft ....i guarantee you I would set nfl records for distance....The day i knew i was giving up on the phone i chucked it so far !!! worst phone ever....beyond frustrating

Too slow???

webOS 1.3.5 solves the speed problem. Up to 3 times faster or more!

driving miss daisy slow

Miss daisy is slowing down to pickup webOS 1.3.5 so she can speed up and fly in her Bentley.

I did not know that Palm is taking shipment of 600,000 Pixi phones in the forth quarter (4Q) of 2009. Plus they are already selling over 500,000 Pre phones per quarter. That is a combined total of over 1 million phones for the quarter. Good job Palm!

Now Verizon, we want those other 200,000 phones added immediately :)

verizon customers will be missing out. Were are the rumors for the pre 2 coming to sprint... It's about that time of the year.

Verizon customers always miss out! I waited a year for my Treo 755p to come out and now waiting for the pre on my company Verizon account.

Whatever the reasons Palm better get it in gear and get the pre and pixi to cdma carriers and gsm carriers everywhere the day before yesterday so to speak. They need to expand the carrier base

One wonders if the Pixi wasn't lobotomizable enough for Verizon.

...the Pixi

>I'll never understand the constant cheerleading for Verizon.

Exactly. I don't get it. Sprint's data network is just as good, if not better, their coverage is decent, and in the few areas they don't have coverage, their phones ROAM ON VERIZON.

There's really no reason to be on Verizon other than "I'm already on Verizon" and these days carriers like Sprint make it very painless to switch.

Anyone considering a new phone is likely to be out of contract anyway. Toss Verizon in the dumpster already.

Seriously? Screw Verizon.

Sprint's network is not only more than adequate, but the service is less expensive than Verizon. If you want a Pre or Pixi, just switch to Sprint. Save money AND enjoy an awesome phone.

If Verizon is going to be picky about it, they don't deserve the Pre. Period. F**k them and bring the Pre to AT&T and T-Mobile instead.

Verizon sucks. They always have, and won't change. It's a miracle they even let the Droid out of the gate. Picky corporate overseer morons.

With regard to: "Verizon has a reputation in the cell phone world for holding up releases for an almost interminable period of time until they meet their stringent standards," this is true in most cases, but is not true for Blackberry. Look at the fiasco concerning the original Blackberry Storm, which apparently was not up to Verizon standards but was still released.

Their standards doesn't mean making the phone perform well or be less buggy. I think it usually is locking down application distribution and other features so they can milk more money out of their customers.

I agree with josh they never think about satisfaction of customer and customers need. They also think about their own profit margin.

Agree with many peoples take on Verizon here. I was with them, left and have never looked back. The service I'm getting with Sprint is just as good as what I got with Verizon and in some cases, better. Sprints name got tarnished when they botched the Nextel merger and customer service went down the tubes. The network has always been pretty solid. Of course every carrier has their weak spots in various parts of the country. But as someone pointed out, you'll roam on Verizon anyway if that happens and I don't roam often. Sprint is one of the best deals out there.
