ScummVM Released as Homebrew; webOS Gaming Options Multiply 24

by Jonathan I Ezor#IM Wed, 24 Feb 2010 1:56 pm EST

As we reported in early January, one of the more exciting announcements of the webOS Internals team was the efforts to port the ScummVM virtual machine to the Palm Pre. This week, PreCentral user kayahr posted his port of the ScummVM as homebrew on PreCentral, which meant it is available via the PreCentral feeds in Preware and webOS Quick Install.

Scumm, the “Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion,” was the platform on which LucasArts and others wrote many classic games. ScummVM is a multiplatform, open-source architecture that was created to run the games on modern desktop, console and mobile devices, now including webOS:

Keep in mind that ScummVM is not a game itself, but a way of running existing games; users have to install and run ScummVM, obtain game files separately, then follow the instructions in the ScummVM homebrew description to sideload and play the game files on their Pres. Also, while some ScummVM games are free and downloadable via the ScummVM project Web site, others may be more difficult to obtain and load (especially those on 5.25” floppy disks!) and subject to possible copyright issues. Users may find old games in boxes in their attics, via eBay and other used game sources, or via other, more creative approaches, but they should be sure to check the compatibility list beforehand.

Kudos to kayahr and the webOS Internals team for continuing to expand the functionality and fun of webOS!

Can Scumm get developers and users to more openly embrace webos? :)

What can Crudd do for us?

We didn't get much out of crAPP

So glad I bought Kings Quest 4 when I saw it in a second hand store... Here I was going to use a Dos emulator for PCs to run it. Now I can drop that sucker on my phone?!

THIRD :)

Sorry I'm just joking, it's sadly as good as it gets for me!...

anyway, this is great news, more and more ways added to our gaming capabilities, can't complain about that!

A Bronze Medal in the PreCentral Olympics!

Monkey Island!!! :D

+10.... Guybrush Threepwood and Monkey Island 2. I'm waiting...

Dont get me wrong, I think its awesome to play games made in the late 1980s and even though I wont download this I do appreciate the developers time that they put into bringing this into fruition but is there a large following for these few games that this engine supports? Several of these titles I dont even recognize at all...

Now If I could get number munchers or some of the old Mac games ported over to WebOS that would be cool...

There is an NES emulator, Gameboy emulator and an Atari 2600 emulator. Enough to play with...

There is a massive community for these old games. These are some of the most playable games ever created. when you consider their small size, they are perfect for mobile gaming. If you take a look at the ScummVM website and chack out how many systems ScummVM is ported too, it will give you an idea of the popularity.
Also, the games are generally 1990's onwards.

To me, this emulator is much more desirable than spending $10 on a lame port of 'Need For Speed'.

well I'm happy that I have this option to play this games.

Hunh...interesting. You know...I don't think I ever did finish Full Throttle...and that's on a CD somewhere in my stuff, I'm pretty sure...

right button missing, please

I loved the Manic Mansion game on NES. It was a very complex game @ the time. I would be interested in playing it on my phone it would be fun.

Anyone have any luck getting 7th Guest to work? I get it where it begins to load but then I get an orange error message. Thoughts?

i'll try it when i get home and let you know. Can't wait to get reminded of my childhood :) I'm probably gonna put on king's quest, police quest, leisure suit larry, loom and monkey island.

Man I love the Pre!! ty!

What is the game that is in the screenshoot of the bedroom???

It's the fantastic Zak McKracken (VGA-Version).

Wrong. It's Zak Mc Kracken Towns-FM version. 256 colors, cool sound track. Hard to find. The VGA version just had 16 colors and standard Midi sound.

... only 50% wrong ;)

Thank you so much!

Playing Monkey Island 1/2/3 und Day of the Tentacle...what do you need more?

The day before yesterday, I was nervous, waiting for paid apps in Europe...now, I don't care anymore.

Finally! Had it manually installed about a month ago. Great to get it officially unofficial ;)

Ooh, yet another emulator...and what's this? It DOESN'T COST $10. Good to see SOME people get it.
