Sending Contact Details 14

by Adam Marks Fri, 15 Oct 2010 4:36 pm EDT

While webOS does not have any cool third party apps to quickly share contact information, Palm did make it very easy to send someone else the details of any contact in your address book. There are 2 main ways to share this information, but first you need to load up a contact record, which can be accomplished by using Universal Search, opening up the Contacts App, clicking on a missed call notification or a variety of other methods. Once you have a contact record open, you will want to swipe-down from the top-left corner of the screen to bring up the Contracts Application drop-down menu.  Keep reading after the break to learn what to do next

  1. Send Contact Tap "Send Contact" and then tap either "Send via MMS" or "Send via Email".  This will create and attach a .vcf (i.e. VCard or "Virtual Business Card") file onto a new text message or email, respectively, that you can then send off to anyone else. A .vcf file can be imported into most Address Books/Contact Lists across a wide range of applications and devices, including any webOS device
  2.

  3. Contact Copy All Tap "Edit" and then "Copy All" to copy all the details of the contact record to the clipboard, to be pasted elsewhere on your device.  You can also perform a Meta-tap by pressing the Gesture Area and "C" at the same time to copy the data
  • Note that regardless of what method you use, the details from all linked records (e.g. Google, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc) of that contact will be included, not just data from the Palm Profile.

You may also want to consider making a separate Contact Record in your address book with just the data that you would want to share with others, in other to create your own Virtual Business Card that can be shared with the methods described above

Thanks to Palm Junky and our own Jonathan I. Ezor for suggesting this tip

Its sad we dont have bluetooth transfer, even my centro has IR and bluetooth transfer.

Thats what I am waiting for!

maybe we'll have it in webos 2.0

Ahem... I believe I submitted this tip back on Aug. 11th! Not bitter, just say'n!

Did you? oops, sorry if you were credited..i will update! :-)

I was being funny... but thanks!!

I would welcome the bluetooth option, but I don't really see that its necessary. These 2 methods have served me well. Bluetooth seems redundant to me and Palm's philosophy has always been to eliminate redundancies.

i'm pretty sure it'll come. HP isn't that stupid. Besides, webos 1.3.1 didnt allow us to send contact either until 1.4.5 or something later like that. The sending contacts is a feature added later on. It didn't come with the release of webos.

I'm not sure what you're talking about. Sending a contact's vCard via MMS and email has been available since webOS 1.0 or 1.1. I remember trying it over a year ago when I got my Pre. Also, 1.4.5 is the latest version.

Wish there were a quicker and less risky way to share more granular info, like one phone number or one email address for a contact.

Something like, in the Contact's card, tap-hold for a context menu for copy, Share via Message, or Share via Email, etc.

Currently, we have to go into edit mode, then tap into the relevant field, and then highlight with Shift-swipe, then Meta-C for copying, all of which is risky in terms of possibly mistakenly erasing or replacing the info, then swipe back to get out of edit mode.

Then off to paste the info into whatever method you want to use to share it.

Too many steps, and too risky for the data, I say. I've submitted this as feedback to the Palm Feedback form. I hope it gets taken in and used.

Actually, if you initiate a new email or text message to that person, then just tap on the "to" field to highlight the address/number, you can do a Gesture+C to copy. hmmm, this sounds like another great tip! :-)

I did't know number 2.
It's better than have to edit single information fields, but would also like to have a fine granular way to select information i like to send.
And all this via bluetooth OPP/OBEX to all other bluetooth phones (not only same brand like iphone), just take a look at symbian having it already 5 years ago :).

OPP-Profile is already in Webos see 'device information', why not just make contacts/calendar capable of sending/recieving vcf/ical?

well submitted this several times to palm since webos 1.03 , have no hope for webos 2.0

I just want a better , bigger and bolder FONT for text messages. FONT SETTINGS/TOOLS/AND DISPLAY OPTIONS WOULD BE SO NICE FOR MY PALM PRE. I would even be happy with a free font app like the droid has called handcent sms which has many font options to choose from. I wish palm pre had the handcent sms app. It would be so much easier on my straining blind eyes if I could only read the words on the big screen of my phone if the palm pre had a app like handcent sms.
And I wonder why the palm pre has such a big screen and such tiny , hard to read font for it ? It makes no sense to me. All my friends make fun of my palm pre because of it's tiny font and big screen . They show off their blackberrys and droids and even LG phones that have font settings and display settings and tools . I get so jealous of their phones that have all these settings and tools and options and mine being the most expensive phone of all with this big screen CAN NOT do any of these things that their phones with smaller screens but yet have big fonts can. WHY IS THAT ????
WHY DOES THE PALM PRE HAVE SUCH A BIG SCREEN BUT YET HAS ONLY ONE FONT ? A FONT THAT IS SO TINY AND HARD TO READ WITH NO FONT OPTIONS OR SETTINGS OR TOOLS TO CHOOSE FROM ? WHY IS THAT ?????
IT MAKES NO SENSE TO ME OR ANYONE ELSE AT ALL !

Do any of these comments ever stay on topic? There's a patch for that dj...
