Set Wallpaper [webOS 3.0] 7

by Adam Marks Tue, 12 Jul 2011 10:20 pm EDT

This tip is only for devices running webOS 3.0 and higher

In webOS 1.0 or 2.0, you were able to set the wallpaper background when viewing a pic in the Photos app or from the "Screen & Lock" app. In webOS 3.0, the only way to change your wallpaper with a picture on your device is to go into the "Screen & Lock" app and choose the "Change wallpaper" option.

When changing your wallpaper in webOS 3.0, there are a few things you should be aware of::

  • If the picture has a resolution of 1024x768 or higher (the screen resolution of the Touchpad), it will be downsized to perfectly fit to the screen size.
  • If it has a resolution lower than 1024x768, it will not zoom the photo to fit the screen, but rather will show the photo at its actual resolution, adding a gray border around it.
  • Since the Touchpad allows the entire OS to rotate--unlike webOS phones that always maintain their portrait orientation--you should be aware that your wallpaper will rotate as well. This can cause a picture to be stretched or cropped in order to fit the full screen of the current rotation. Choose your photo that will look good in both portrait and landscape
  • You will only be able to choose from pictures on your device, not from any Synergy-imported pics such as Facebook.

It's not downsized, it's cropped. The best solution is to use 1024x1024 wallpaper. This way it'll be crisp in both orientations, and you'll only lose a little bit on the sides/top depending on the orientation.

I support jhoff80's comment above that 1024x1024 is the best wallpaper size. I've created many of my own and this is what works best in both orientations.

It helps to start with 1280x1024 images and crop them to 1024x1024.

You can side load the new background by dropping them in the existing Wallpaper folder when plugged into your computer with the USB cable.

Don't forget to Safely Eject the TouchPad in Windows Explorer in order for the new images to show up in the Pictures & Videos app, then look in the Wallpaper folder.

But you don't have to crop/resize your images, as 1024x768 which are more common, will look great in landscape mode and just crop the sides in portrait mode.

The InterfaceLIFT HD application uses 1024x1024 images to set as the wallpaper. That way the images don't get stretched like would happen with 1024x768.

I've been looking for how to do this. V. disappointed they removed it from the photos app. Hilarious that you're supposed to notice a line of plain text on this settings page and think it's a button you can use.

Yesterday, I added some new wallpapers by searching via Google, then tapping on an image (1024x768). I was given the menu choices of:

Copy to Photos
Share Image
Set Wallpaper

I tapped on "set wallpaper" and voila, I was good to go. The images were also downloaded to "miscellaneous" in my Photo albums.

Wait a minute...

The WALLPAPER rotates?? How does that make ANY sense at all? I mean, I can see some limited applications for the ABILITY to have the wallpaper rotate (1024x1024 family photos) But under most circumstances, I'd want the wallpaper to remain in place while everything else rotates.

Please tell me there is a way to LOCK the wallpaper rotation!

Also, yes, removing that option from Photos was stupid, and the "line of text as button" needs to be fixed PRONTO.
