Sharing specific Contact Details 9

by Adam Marks Wed, 27 Oct 2010 2:48 pm EDT

While webOS provides the ability to share the entirety of a single contact with others, what happens if you only want to share a phone number, email address or mailing address. For certain accounts (such as your Palm Profile or Google accounts), you can go into a Contract's entry, click "Edit", highlight the data you need and copy it, but this is clearly not the most efficient way you can do this, right? In fact, for "read only" accounts like Facebook, you are not even able to select or highlight some data in a contact record. Instead, keep reading after the break to learn how you can more quickly get access to share this information

  • For email address: Go into card view and use Universal Search to find the contact (remember to use the first initial + last name to easily narrow down your request). If you want to share an email address, tap on the email address to bring up a new email message, tap on the contact's name in the "TO:" row until it becomes highlighted and the email address is shown, and then perform a Meta-tap (hold Gesture Area and tap the "C" key) to copy. Then, just discard the email draft via another Meta-tap (hold Gesture Area and tap the "D" key).
  • For phone numbers: Open up the Messaging App and tap the New SMS icon to open a new SMS. Do a quick search for find the contact you are looking for and select the phone number you want to share. Just as above, tap on the contact's name in the "TO:" row until it becomes highlighted and the phone number is visilble, and then perform a Meta-tap (hold Gesture Area and tap the "C" key) to copy. Then just back-swipe out of the new message to discard the message
  • For mailing addresses: This takes a few extra steps and does require you to go into a contact's record. So go into card view and use Universal Search to find the contact and then click on the contact's name to open up their record. Scroll down to the mailing address section and then hold either the Shift ( Shift Key ) or the Option (Orange/Silver) key and tap on the mailing address. A pop up will appear, allowing you to "Copy" the address to the clipboard (you can also launch this address into Google Maps or your telenav app, if available). Then just back-swipe out of the contact record or go into card view and flick the app off the top of the screen to close it.

Thanks for another great set of tips Adam. One alternative approach is to use the Copy All method and then delete out the stuff you don't want to send. I've found myself doing that most often rather than trying to remember these approaches...

You're welcome! We covered the Copy All in the http://www.precentral.net/sending-contact-details tip, but wanted to give some other individual options! Of course, that works well, too! :-)

Personally, I'm still waiting for a fix to the "
" bug in contacts notes. It makes notes completely unreadable.

PPPPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLMMMMM!

Come on and fix this!

What I really miss in Contact is the "Categories" feature available in the PalmOS Contact App. Back then we could group all our contacts separately ie: Friends, Family, Business, etc... But now the WebOS Contact app only provide contacts listing in A to Z.

However the category like feature is found in Android. I really hope WebOS will have this back someday... just like the good old days in Treo/Palmpilot!!

Go get Classic Note. Now. It has categories, allows for private/hidden categories, encrypted memos and has (gasp!) an UNDO feature!

Plus there's a desktop app that will let you import your Palm Desktop memos or CSV or you can import CSV files on the phone as long as you have the FileMgr service.

Thanks for more great tips!

I miss being able to bluetooth the damn data to another phone..whatever happened to that feature..this is really old....2 steps forward 80 back.
