Splashtop for TouchPad is almost here; sign-ups for notifications are now available 50
It's been a bit of a bumpy road to get word on whether or not Splashtop Remote Desktop software would be coming to the TouchPad; first they said that there were no plans to come to the webOS tablet, and then changed their mind in July to say that a tablet version was in the works. With HP's decision to cut production of the TouchPad, we feared that Splashtop for the TouchPad was practically doomed to the same fate as the Disqus management app and countless other apps that never arrived.
Today that all changes. Splashtop has released a signup page (and announced it via Twitter) for interested TouchPad owners to put in their email addresses and get an alert as soon as the new version of Splashtop is available. Jump on over to the sign-up page using the source link below and keep your eyes on the App Catalog. It looks like a release could be coming sometime in the next several weeks, if not immediately.

This will probably be the 1st app I get when the next batch of Touchpads come!
Done & done. Bring it on, please & thank you.
Yep.. Finally!!! but better late than never.
Time you made my day!!!!!!! Thanks
Nive, very nice! Be getting that immediately.
Sweet...things are moving along very nicely. i-who!???
I don't know about you guys. It seems things are looking up for WebOS these couple weeks after you-know-who drops WebOS hardware manufacturing!
This is good news!

Will it cost just the app price or is there a monthly fee, too? Will it work for my work computer? Can I set it up myself or will I need an IT person to do something to set that up? I use my laptop to connect to work with Microsoft's native remote desktop connection. How will this compare?
If it is a remote desktop app then the price would be for the app and not a monthly service. You would normally need IT to setup the port for you but since you already have a laptop that can connect via remote desktop then you don't need any setup. Once you get the app you just type the IP/hostname and the port that your IT department selected for your system. It would work just like your laptop except that you have to cope with tapping on the screen rather than using your mouse.
Is it possible for an individual to use this or do you need a corporate IT?
I'd like to be able to use things that are on my computer where current apps don't exist--Netflix, SlingBox, etc.
Thanks/Cheers
no, it just costs the price of the app. the pc-side is free
http://www.splashtop.com/streamer/download
you just install the streamer on any pc you want to access, then use the touchpad app to connect to the streamer. for local access inside your network that should be all you need. access over the internet would surely require some knowledge to forward the necessary port(s) through your router.
There's a way to remotely access the computer through your gmail account. You just enter your gmail account info in the PC client I've got it to work, but haven't been able to actually do anything on the computer.
Oh Ya!
Use this on my Pre an Nook Color and SplashTop Rocks! I'm so happy its finally coming! Sorli...
How are you using it on your pre?
there's been a version for webos phones for awhile. just wasn't all that much use given the tiny screen. it looks like it got an update a couple of days ago too.
Count me in for the contest..this is just what I need to get thru a hectic day in crazy job. Is this also in the app catalog?
This plus document editing were my two must have apps.... then I returned my TP after black Thursday, then came doc editing, and soon this... sigh.... looking forward to my $100 TouchPad.
hmm, no linux streamer (server side). That's a bit lame and quite surprising, considering they started of as a linux distro.
Bummer! This won't do me any good then. *sigh*
I think Pre Central should take the dunce cap off Chairman Leo
while I know this is not the case, the way WebOS and the TP have been evolving, it seems as if HP had planned this as a grand marketing strategy to jump start WebOS' ecosystem
of course this would be illegal ;)
now we only need a cellphone (other than the Veer) that effectively mates with the TP
seems a shame that HP can't pull this off on their own given all their expertise in small platform computing
HP & Compaq built some fine small PDAs & Paul's cellphones were always at the cutting edge
I think HP is playing away from strength here, but forces are likely at play in manufacturing that consumers might not fully understand
what ever the reason, HP's corporate strategy may be a gamble that will pay them huge dividends
Nope.
I think you're reading a lot more into this than what ever was there.
What Leo did with webOS devices was akin to my wife tagging along with one of my hairbrained schemes just long enough to say, "I told you so", then turn and do what she wanted to from the start.
The ONLY way this whole firesale debacle could serve to help HP in the future is if they wait about a year and a half for the ripples settle (and consumers to forget that they said they were done with hardware), then smack Apple upside the head with the mother off all tablets - done right from ground up.
We've already got the superior OS. All we need is more horsepower and much better hardware to house it in and we could easily command $350 for our 16GB and $450 for the 32GB.
Even with a product that bests the iPad, I still say price cut them. There are still SCORES of consumers out their who just don't see the justification of a $500 hit for a 16GB tablet - iPad or otherwise. Thats the market we need to get. And the ones who were already prepared to drop $500 will fold like paper mache.
I think you're dreaming...
why does everyone claim the touchpad hardware is so horrible? what's missing that other tablets have? a rear camera and gps. that's it. everything else is top-notch. it's been well proven that any slowness is due to a lack of OS optimizations in certain places, not any shortcoming of the hardware. the only other thing HP could have done better was use a metal back and frame to improve the perceived 'build-quality'. even that though is just a symptom of the whole "if it's not EXACTLY the same as apple then it sucks" philosophy.
Most people are stupid. When they say hardware, they mean how it looks. Thin, metal, like apple. Look at all the Ultrabooks coming out now that look like Macbook Air clones.
Doesn't matter though. Even if HP came out with slicker looking hardware, they won't command a higher price. It's the software & ecosystem they need to worry about.
This is awesome news! I also have everything I need from a productivity standpoint in my Touchpad!
With this on the Touchpad we'll finally have an enterprise-ready device. Thanks!
not exactly. it doesn't do RDP. for this you still have to install their 'streamer' app on whatever you want to remote into. that's not exactly enterprise-ready.
don't get me wrong, I'm still buying this the second it comes out, and it will help me a lot. but a real RDP app (and VNC too!) is still badly needed.
I saw the host server app requirement and was coming back here to post a retraction to my "enterprise-ready" designation. There's no way I'm installing "streamer" on all the servers I manage. I guess I'll have put it on a workstation and double-hop to the remote systems I need to get to. What a disappointment...
THEY ARE BUILDING THIS PLATFORM UP WITH ALL OF THE RIGHT APPS. THE PRODUCTIVITY LEVEL THIS TABLET IS SOON TO BE ON WILL MAKE IT A SOLID WORK-HORSE. AND MORE WILL COME!!!!!
I know nothing at all about remote access.
Very simply question here. In fact, so simple that I could not find an answer to it in the Splashtop Q&A section.
Does the PC (or Mac) have to be powered on for files and such to be accessed remotely?
it's not a file access app. it's a remote desktop app. yes, of course the PC has to be on.
if you want file access, try box.net, zumodrive, dropbox, etc.
Can you print to a printer that's not on?
Alright, jackass (nick1sp). Did I not preface my question with "I know nothing at all about remote access."?
How about this? Can you see out of an eye that's been dotted?
I'm sorry if I sounded like an jackass, didn't mean to. Just wanted to let you visualize the similarity and understand why it couldn't without just answering with just a YES.
I'd still like a RDP app that uses the windows built in service.
absolutely. however for many purposes this app is even better. you'll see once you get it.
that all said, a native RDP app is really needed too. I want to be able to RDP to random PC's at various clients... obviously I'm not going to go installing the splashtop streamer on all of them.
Splashtop into work PC then RDP from splashtoped pc into all others on the enterprise network. This sounds like just the thing I have been waiting for. You can also VNC into all other pc/servers on the network for the ST pc.
well, yeah, in fact i actually do already do that at many locations - rdp to one PC, then hop from that to the others. still, it requires I install extra software on at least the one PC. hardly a deal-killer of course, but real RDP would still be easier.
in any case, if splashtop was going to be sold at best buy, I'd be in line at 7am to buy it. lucky all I have to do is wait for it to show up in the app catalog and then press 'Buy'.
No doubt that this will be a must own!
I got my confirmation from Splashtop and then I replied thanking them for bringing this to the Touchpad. Believe it or not, they replied to me thanking me for the interest! And the person who replied did it from a cell phone so it wasn't some automated reply!!! This is amazing to me!
What service already. I know I will love this app. Thank you Splashtop for being awesome! Our community will support you and we hope you continue to support us. Please give my comment a thumbs up so Splashtop knows how we feel gang. The woman who replied to me will be checking this thread because I told her I was going to sing some praises here. LOL
Seriously, I am impressed already. Can't wait to buy this app.
i hope slashtops whiteboard app comes to the touchpad also!
after the remote desktop app, i'd like the X-Display app. it'd be perfect in exhibition mode - put the touchpad on the touchstone, and it automatically hooks up to the pc as a second display; pull it off the touchstone, and it reverts to normal use. awesome.
would it be possible to use 2 touchpads and make it a triple screen setup? that would be awesome!
crazy talk will get us nowhere!
NEED IT NOW NOW NOW NOW
Is the speed they're claiming over the internet or on internal network? 30fps is pretty amazing if it's over the internet.
Decent remote desktop app would be a major boost to the app cataolg....well done Splashtop.
The obviously realised that the ipad's days are numbered and webOS is here to stay ;-)
