Skype coming to webOS on Verizon 22

by Derek Kessler Tue, 19 Oct 2010 9:07 am EDT

Skype It’s a happy headline, and a sad headline, all wrapped into six delightful and painful words that boild down like so: Skype support is finally coming to webOS, but it’s only coming if you’re on Verizon. Thanks to an exclusive deal between VoIP giant Skype and American cellular behemoth Verizon, only phones on Big Red get to have access to the sweet Skypes. Blessedly, at least current Verizon webOS devices should also get access to Skype, as soon as the webOS 2.0 update is pushed down to the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus on that network.

What about the rest of the world? O2.de maybe? It's not like they're competing with Verizon in the US.

um. Canada plz

shouldn't be an issue with our wonderful homebrew community to have us all in the mix.

@ kuruptlon.. I guess we wait and see

Well Our great homebrew community gave Sprint Mobile HotSpot, I am sure they will find a way to deliver Skype as well to other carrier Palms

Dont worry its easy to extract the app and let the masses have it..even it if means wifi only calls

Wow. I am starting to hate Verizon as much as ATT/Apple for its "exclusivity". :(

i hate exclusivity, i just wish they open up to other networks in the UK. The pre would of done so well if they did IMHO!!

If i know Verizon it'll take about 2 months before the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus gets the webOS 2.0

You'll be able to pull the app off of a verizon phone just like with mobile hotspot, I'm sure, and transfer it to other carriers.

how do you get mobile hotspot for non US carriers, I still cant get it for 02 UK.

Extract the IPK from the Verizon Doctor, send to phone and install using Novacom (don't think WOSQI works).

I'm sure the IPK for Skype will be floating around once it hits.

I'm wondering if the skype app will be able to do wifi only calls. I'm hoping this leads to sorting out the programming it takes for mic access and all the other hoops developers will have to jump through to get google voice to do wifi calls. Thus saving one's minutes.

The exclusivity deal is over for skype. it is already on sprint android devices.

I wonder if developers can build their own skype client to the skype api for other webOs carriers.

or, maybe they can get the skype client to run on the other carriers the way mhs can work on a sprint pre.

or maybe a facetime client?

and I wonder how skype will effect data plans...

I'm on vzw, but I sure want skype goodness for all. I hate exclusive deals...

What a bunch of crap!

yeah homebrew to the rescue

This is BULLSHIT! Fuck Palm, Verizon and Skype for allowing this bullshit. Apps shouldn't be exclusive to a carrier. Palm hasn't allowed this before so why are they allowing it now? I'd understand if Verizon was the only one to allow it over their 3G network, but people on other carriers should at least be able to use it on wifi.

This sort of thing should be illegal.

Why do the carriers have to be so damn evil?

I'll probably have to leave Sprint for Verizon anyway since Sprint doesn't seen to give a shit about Palm anymore.

Why is this palm's fault? Skype made a deal with verizon. Verizon wants control over this app which can cut into its profitability. Not suprising. The american consumer is buying the device from a carrier in most cases and they protect their own business.
If we're lucky homebrew will be able to open skype up.

Does the Pre2 even have a front facing camera?

I think that Skype will be "modified" to be used by all Pre/Pixi and etc users, just like it was with Mobile HotSpot App :)

Will have to waith and see

This is a kinda worthless app except for international travel. I'm glad I purchased an iPod Touch to do Skype and Webex through my WIFI Hotspot.
