Skype update for Android brings 3g calling to all carriers 9
More interesting news out from the world of Android that may have an impact on webOS users. Our sister site, Android Central reports an update to the Skype app has landed on the Android market which, aside from fixing a security issue that left users’ profile information exposed to malicious 3rd party apps, now enables worldwide Skype calls over 3G, including the US. Previously this was a feature only available to Skype users on Verizon Wireless, so this terrific news for those future webOS Android users rocking carriers other than Big Red.
To the webOS faithful, hopefully this movement beyond a single carrier is a sign of things to come. Currently the webOS Skype app is a 2.0 and above Verizon Wireless exclusive. However, we’ve heard rumblings of video calls on the TouchPad/Pre3 as being via Skype since ThinkBeyond on February 9th, so there's hope of the service expanding it's feature set in the near future. Add to that the excitement of seeing Skype break out of Verizon’s walled garden with this latest Android update, and perhaps the age of ubiquitous carrier and OS agnostic video calling is truly near at hand. After all, if they can do it for reading, music streaming, and data storage, why not calls?

I can't wait for my Dick Tracy WebOS wristwatch to make video calls to/from any carrier over 3G/4G/Wifi.
Great news. The VZW exclusive Skype deal is irritating at-best. I happen to have a VZW BB (secondary to my Pre+) with Skype, but, the darn thing refuses to load when I'm roaming on Extended networks (which is most of the time).
The fact that iPhone users have never had the VZW exclusive in their way is just a bit more of a kick in the shins..... hopefully this info is a sign of good things to come.
I guess even P|C is giving up on webOS in favor of Android -- the last three articles have been about Android.
Hmmm....
Dreaming... just not as biased as some portray the members here as being. What about you?
I came here to say the same thing. If I want android news I'll got to androidcentral. WHY are 3 of the last 5 precentral blog entries about android? It's rhetorical, I won't come back to look for an answer.
I don't mind a little news about competing phones here and there, but really 3 out of 5? Oh and the 2 webOS articles are "From the forums" and a Tip.
Nothing wrong with showing us what we can look forward to in coming months or years.
But you are right. If we want to keep track of cutting edge wireless, we should go directly to the source. Maybe post in here, once a week, "Someday we'll have this too", like the other scheduled fluffs.
Looking forward to moving to Android 'in the coming months' since HP appears disinterested at best.
Verizon's Skype client is only good for one thing: calling another person on Skype. If you are calling one of your Skype contacts on their landline or mobile number, you will be billed for minutes just as you would be for a regular call. Hardly a good deal since most of the people who even have a Skype account are not logged on to be available at all times like their mobile number is.
Skype for Android on the other hand has been true voip over wifi, so it has indeed been free and therefore a good value for calling any number (if you have a Skype Pro subscription and the number that goes with it). We'll have to see how it operates over 3g now - at the very least, you'll be paying for data.
why are all of these articles posting on precentral website. Who are these writers working for. DAMN. they need to go some where with that SHIT!!!!
