Smartphone Round Robin webOS review from WMExperts' Phil Nickinson 13

WebOS and Windows Mobile

Of all the smartphone platforms in play for this year’s Smartphone Round Robin, webOS is clearly the very newest. Outside of our own Dieter Bohn, none of the other Smartphone Experts network sites editors participating in the Round Robin had had significant face time with webOS, and that includes WMExperts editor Phil Nickinson. So when Phil got a Palm Pre and a Palm Pixi shoved into each hand, we left him on the side of the road asking, “Whaaaa?”

Thankfully, the trusty and knowledgeable members of the PreCentral community stepped up and gave Phil the help he needed so that he could knock out a comparative review of webOS in a week’s time. It helps that the webOS user interface is incredibly easy to learn and navigate.

Phil came away with plenty of observations about webOS, especially with how Palm’s rebirth comes as Windows Mobile seems to be losing its footing. What all did Phil think about webOS, the Pre, and the Pixi? Well, we don’t want to ruin the surprise for you, so you should head on over the WMExperts to see what he has to say about webOS cards, apps, and hardware.

Of course, if you want a Pre or Pixi for yourself (or a loved one), we’re here to help you out. All you have to do is leave a post in a Smartphone Round Robin thread in the PreCentral forums and you’ll be automatically entered to win a Pre or a Pixi. Cool, eh? Of course, there are some rules, so read up before posting down. And stay tuned in the next week as Casey Chan of Android Central takes on webOS (he just tackled Windows Mobile) and Dieter gets hands-on time with Nokia’s S60 and Maemo. Hopefully he can wash that iPhone smell off his hands first.

webos just feels good. If they can get alot of phones out there on different carriers it will be unstoppable.

just goes to show you how much wimo users like webos. Like I said in the past, if anyone is gunna ''buy out palm'' I don't think it will be nokia, I think it will be microsoft. Why spend the r&d developing something that is web centric, if they could buy not only palm's webos, but gain the support from the palm community. The thing that's slowing webos down is resources that they just don't have, and to me microsoft would benefit the most from this out of any company looking into an acquisition. Just my thought though.

Because then Microsoft would be supporting and developing a Linux OS. I don't see them doing that anytime in the foreseeable future. Especially with all the money they've put into their "Get The Facts" campaign to discredit Linux, it doesn't make sense.

I agree and just hope palm gets resources (specifically cash) so they can see all their objectives through.

I agree with the article. WebOS is a game changer but it needs to really step up its hardware game. Just imagine if WebOS was running on a Touch Pro2 or even *gasp* an HD2.

Also once it gets on other carriers, I think that it will really take off.

*duplicte

I'm not one for sliders, but landscapes are more robust from a design prospective..... But that hd2 is freaking sexy for a phone.
how about this, the hd2 running webos, but smoothed like the pre looking like a skipping stone.... Oh boy.
If palm says weeks before ces they aren't doing a slider or any new phone, and less than 24hrs we find out the pixi has wifi on another carrier, and the pre will be different on vz, and their history with htc, I think were gunna see a form of a slab and ''preo''. Anyone else seeing the bigger picture of marketing here like I am?

ahh the world of beta testers. That's what we are early adopters of a new experiment called webos. Its a love hate experiment for me. I love webOs but these laggy moments have to go!

I would take WebOS over windows mobile any day

I'm for getting a Pixi for a loved one. =)

Wow... reading that review really makes you appreciate the writers we have here at PreCentral. I've read better written articles in high school newspapers.
