So about that October issue of Pivot... 80

by Derek Kessler Tue, 01 Nov 2011 5:46 pm EDT

Yeah, it's not October anymore. So does HP push "The Sports Issue" back to November, just skip it altogether, or... what? Does Pivot still exist?

Normally we wouldn't complain about something as cool, but relatively minor, as Pivot getting killed. But when it's the first thing somebody sees every. single. time. they open the App Catalog, then that becomes an issue.

I am just stunned that they failed to offer a zombie issue of Pivot for October. With Halloween, The Walking Dead (available to be watched on Amazon on the TP), and the fact that the OS itself is basically undead it seemed, well, a no-brainer.

a no-braiinnnnnnnnner

They should have just brought back the "Borg" girl. That was scary.

Look closely! Those girls ARE zombys... LOL

Which is better: the zombie volleyball players or the stoner beach bums on the September edition?

That's like asking which animal you want to attack you: a grizzly bear or a polar bear?

...and pretty hot too :)

LOL...hot zombie chicks--does it get any better than that?

This is very disappointing. I am really getting close to ordering that droid RAZR. Help!

Yeah that RAZR is sechsay

thought the same. and android 4.0 will have lots of webOS features. but: the android UI is ugly. *sigh*

My question is, why can't HP update the damn website? Even today it STILL says " a limited supply of units will be made available in the coming weeks and months" with a picture of the Touchpad.

http://www.hp.com/united-states/webos/us/en/tablet/touchpad-availability...

Is EVERYBODY working at HP brain dead? Jeeze...I love my new Touchpad with all my heart but the lack of effort to even update their main website is disheartening.

Yes.

Just wanted to send out a big "Thank you" to Derek for all that you do. I have been a Palm loyalist and Palm OS/webOS lover since 2002. I have owned three different Palm PDA systems, a Handspring and even today I still rock my Sony Clie with it's massive 128mb memory stick. The last decade of following Palm and then HP has been both rewarding and heartbreaking. My only regret is that more people didn't embrace Palm and webOS the way this community did. 1000 of the most loyal fans is still just that...a measly 1000 people in a world populated by billions. I will forever hold out hope until my last webOS device dies and I can no longer find a replacement on ebay.

It'll be decades before webOS devices completely disappear completely from eBay just as you can still find ancient analog brick cell phones from the 80s that required "bags" to hold the internals.

You'll be using webOS for decades, in that case, assuming that changing cell phone radio standards haven't left them in the dust 10 years from now.

Because they fired everybody - duh! Just teasing...

webOS is DEAd.. It since

... in the coming months...

I'd like to think that even with the Sword of Damocles hanging over them the webOS team would finish strong, even if it's a big "final issue" or whatever. Not some half-baked coming soon screen for the next 3 months..

Not to mention how freakin' creepy that cover picture looks. It was bad enough having to look at the hipsters flopping around on the beach in August, but I REALLY don't want to get stuck with that picture. If anyone can patch it out of existence, I'm sure everyone will appreciate it.

"But when it's the first thing somebody sees every. single. time. they open the App Catalog, then that becomes an ISSUE."

Was the pun intended?

i believe that WAS the "October issue" LoL

I booted into WebOS yesterday for the first time in a couple of weeks since installing CM7. Even though the Android has more apps support, I realized again how much I really enjoy the intuitive interface WebOS offers. HP really needs stop neglecting such a marvelous asset.

We really need an Android player instead of full Android.

I honestly won't be surprised if webOS and the servers are shut down by the holidays. No one is going to buy Palm. If they do it will be for patents, NOT for webOS. webOS will soon be EOL and all phone and tablet holders will be left with unsupported hardware that will die a slow death.

As I look at my 3 dead Sprint Pres and 2 launch day 32gb TouchPads with all of the accessories, and dozens and dozens of apps I bought spread across all devices, all I can think is "what a crazy ride."

Oh wow. Oh wow. Oh wow.

I'll hold onto my touchpad with webos until canonical releases ubuntu for tablets. Then I'll install ubuntu on my touchpad to breathe new life onto it. Been wondering how fun it would be to create vector graphics on a touch screen.

Interesting how you quote jobs' dying words at the end of your comment (Assuming those were his actual words and not just family member theatrics).

LMAO HAHHAHA OMG YOU GOT THAT FROM STEVE JOBS LAST WORDS! You sir are HILARIOUS

People are acting as if this is the first time HP has neglected to update the app catalog in a month or more. Since the beginning, HP has always kept the same featured apps in place for sometimes months at a time. They don't seem to understand the impression this gives to potential app customers.

If the opening page (whether it be Pivot or Featured Apps) is the same every time they check it, customers are going to stop checking the catalog for updates because it'll give the impression that the catalog is frozen in time. That translates into less sales for developers.

It's not the same though. It's not the same as a creepy picture fullscreen.

They removed the month from the screen so I was wondering if instead of it being monthly it became quarterly or just periodic.

They are waiting for the NBA Lockout to end looolz

I'm sure it has been ready for quite sometime. Too bad HP doesn't seem to care. We get an update but no PIVOT? Come on HP, keep webOS going. Wonder if there is still a decent number of us who could tweet, facebook, and show that we still care?

It's typical, really, of how badly HP has handled webOS since the beginning of the purchase of Palm. Delays, poor follow through and outright neglect. I can't imagine what it must be like to work in a place like that, it'd drive me nuts. I'm self employed and I know if I ran my business like HP does I'd have been out of business years ago.

Go to the old Palm website and you get redirected to HP's webOS site where they're still showing off the touchpad AND the never released Pre3. It must be chaos there...

I'd say crickets, not chaos. So diappointing. Someone needs to write a patch that removes pivot from the app catalog so we don't have a constant reminder of its failure.

WOR posted screenshots of the entire issue a few weeks ago, so its done. I don't understand why they don't put it up.

WOR also leaked the codes for Sport Live! HD giveaway in the issue. Those would either need to be regenerated or would need to be pulled before the issue went out.

Plus the calendar page would also need to be pulled since all of the events listed are already in the past.

and that would waste a lot of paper....

If it were even relevant enough Mike Judge could have a field day with this. They could finally have TP for their bunghole

I have a couple conspiracy theories:
-Apps selected for the issue are behind schedule, not released, etc
-Along with the rest of Leo's webOS HW shutdown fiasco, they couldn't decide if Pivot was HW or SW (being funded or not), they got into some payment dispute with the company that made the issue, etc, etc.

Kidding aside, it's symptomatic of the indecision at HP and life-support status of webOS that HP couldn't get the Oct Pivot magazine issue out or at least announce that they are discontinuing it all together.

I have to admit I found the Pivot concept goofy at first (before the first one was released) but, when I read them, I found I liked it. It would have really highlighted the very best apps (especially webOS specific apps) if the catalog had had an ever increasing stable of apps and a growing and thriving developer community. That possibility seems increasingly unlikely now given everything that has happened.

P.S. I'm for a patch that replaces the Pivot opening screen to the app catalog (how about with a webOSOS logo?). :)

Here's the link to the Pivot developer's homepage if you want to see the October edition of Pivot!

http://tspxyz.com/portfolio/#hp-webos-pivot

Thanks, how did you come by that? Just curious.

October? Who are you kidding? I'm still looking at the June issue.

And if you give me october, please add the $50 early adopter bonus, $50 appstore allowance and the firesale cashback for my 32GB TP.

Did anyone get a touchpad on bestbuy today?

I just checked it out, they sell with desk tops for 150 or you can buy it for 600.

yeah, don't understand this.. Like, if the issue was never actually created I would have said: "ok, so hp stopped putting money into the app store, makes sense."

But the issue was made. did the contract run out? was there a contract? .. it's sad that these people are morons

Some of the users on this site need to learn how to take a hint. HP isn't making webOS hardware anymore. Their legal department probably told them that they had to say that they are supporting the platform for a period of time. That's corporate speak for "move along - nothing interesting going on here."

However, webOS is winding down. For the past month, there has been some ground meat still being pushed through the sausage grinder but there isn't any more pork being fed into the machine.

If you want to be one of the "Let's wait for an official announcement" or the "Let's wait and see what happens" then you will be the last to realize that you are using a dead platform. Some of you are actually waiting for support servers to be turned off.I'm guessing you are probably the same people who are hanging out at the street party when the cleaning trucks are moving by.

Here's a hint - if you are repeatedly caught unawares that your platform is dwindling away then your platform-selecting criteria are probably aren't the best. If you think about it, this is the end of a three year downward slide of what used to be Palm. That is, three years since a Palm platform has been a major participant in the smartphone game.

Best platform selecting criteria: Does it do what I need it to, as well as I need it to?

...and is it well supported and flexible enough so that there is a high chance it will meet my future needs?

It wouldn't bother me if HP would put their remaining resources into other areas, other than pivot. They could just put a static welcome page up and call it a day. Or just flip a switch in the App Catalog that disables Pivot all together and have it go straight into the Categories section.

is it so hard to push a quick update to kill the pivot page on the catalog. what do these developers do on a day to day basis. its not like they have anything going on. i wonder if they are all laying down with all the uncertainty. its probably office parties all day long everyday......

You still open the App catalog? I have Angry Birds, Quick Office, kindle, facebook, and a twitter client. What more do I need? I open Preware more than the App Catalog.

it says right there "coming soon" translate that.

I bought my motorola atrix2 on Sunday. I absolutely love it. The few things that it cannot do are dwarfed by the dozens of things I now CAN do, things that we all had on our wish lists. If cyanogen mods ever perfects a way of getting android ics onto my touchpad, I'll probably do that, as well. I loved webOS, but I wasn't expecting to have to sit bedside, next to a comatose hPalm for years, hoping against hope. If they come back, great. I'll look at what they have, then. I am smart enough to handle the switch back, if needed.

Its not a good sign that it wasn't released. Also the 3.0.4 update could of been in the pipeline for awhile. I hold out hope thru these dark times with webOS but I think its coming to a end. Maybe a last minute miracle will save it.

Wow. HP has reduced you to begging for a magazine. Snap out of it!

lol begging for magazine

Those girls scare me and I'd like a new image for when I open the App Catalog. Just saying...

I think they are hot.

they look like they are 15-strike 1....being that you rep glenn beck-strike 2...

The impression I have is that HP fired the employees that maintain the Pivot, the Developers web site and so on. Meg (I sound like I know her and we are buddies :)) said she will decide the fate of WebOS in two months, so until then everything comes to a halt!!!
This is not professional at all, just shutdown everything related to WebOS and the Phones and TP tablet.

I don't care about pivot. But that picture creeps me out every time I open the app store.

Well played sir, well played.

Thanks, I thought I had gotten over my insomnia, but you cranked it up a level. Ugghh...

Didn't think of that one. I'll have to make one with the borg queen and the palm girl.

signs, signs, everywhere there's signs...

Brentj, impressive, only thing is the blonde and brunette's hair magically switched places! :-)

Yeah, agree with all comments.

If HP can't even be arsed to remove a 'coming soon' ad in the catalog app then I quite frankly can't be arsed buying an HP product ever again.

Small things like this define perceptions of a company. They say one thing and their actions give away their true intentions.

People may have bought the TP at firesale prices but they *still bought an HP product* and therefore deserve to receive proper customer service and respect.

HP you suck!

If you've ever worked in retail or sold any kind of product then you know how much thought you really give to people who have already made their purchase - not much. You may give lip service about how the sale is just the beginning of the service relationship and how much support you will offer but you are really moving on to the next sales.

Face it. This magazine is a promotional vehicle for a product they aren't even selling anymore. What are they going to run? A feature story about a developer about how much potential webOS has as a platform? An internal interview with someone on the cutting edge of webOS platform development?

This is the end, people. The doors have closed. The lights are still on but there's mostly cleanup going on. Don't worry, the stock photos of hipsters will be used in some other ad campaign for organic energy drinks of something.

Fortunately, we have PreCentral to chronicle the winding down of this platform. Its fitting because the theme of this site over the past few years can be summed up by this: "Waiting..."

I'd you read into it, it could mean that there is a new second launch of WebOS in the spring/summer of 2012.

wake up man and stop dreaming.

I think it's too late to grasp at a 're-launch'.

Your all daft - these xcomments mean nothing. Those that are waiting for something to happen with WebOS (speaking as one who just purchased a Pre3), may have a long wait for anything worth singing or dancing about to appear. But those that say WebOS is dead, don't know that yet! It's like saying HP are no longer making PC's, well they have announced a turnaround for PSG. It 'could', however unlikely, happen for WebOS, and even Hardware for WebOS. Remember, they already have prototype/pre-production 7 inch tablets that look great, and the rumoured slab phone. OK, if they reversed their plans completely, it'd be a slow haul up a steep hill for them - but it could happen. I like 'Hope', and I'm not such a 'sheep', to change my phone, tablet etc just because everyone else is buying Android or iOS - I've looked at them and don't like them. Should the WebOS product be buried next week, I am unlikely to buy into anything else for a long time. I accept however that some of the best WebOS qualities are now slowly appearing on Android, BlackBerry, Win and iOS devices - so it will only be a short time before a device comes a long with synergy, true multitasking, and the card metaphor - but will it all come with the homebrew support WebOS fans have enjoyed?

Just get rid of pivot if you won't update it damn.

It's sad watching HP let WebOS bleed out like this. How much more cruel could they get...

new pivot is up...don't see any codes for apps though...

The new edition is out now!
