Splashtop has plans for a remote desktop app for the HP TouchPad 35

by Derek Kessler Mon, 25 Jul 2011 3:21 pm EDT

While the HP TouchPad does has VPN access built in to webOS 3.0, setting it up between your computer and the tablet isn’t exactly an easy process. You know what is easy? Installing an app on both your PC or Mac and your TouchPad. That’s just what Splashtop’s Remote Desktop software has been doing for webOS phones for several months now, but when it might come to the newest member of the webOS family was an unknown, as Splashtop had previous said that they had no plans for a TouchPad app.

That seems to have changed recently, however, as Splashtop responded to a post on the Twitters a few days back that “Actually we do have plans... things change.”

Things change, eh? Yeah, they do. Maybe it was HP’s plans for massive a TouchPad push into the corporate and small business world, or perhaps one of those developer SWAT teams was dropped into their HQ in San Jose (a hop, skip, and a jump from Sunnyvale), or maybe things are just looking up for webOS and the TouchPad. Regardless of the reasoning, we’re looking forward to running a full Splashtop Remote Desktop app on our TouchPads.

Ah! The news I've been waiting for!

Thanks, P|C, and a very special thanks to Splashtop!

While this is great and all, an app that uses RDP would be MUCH more appreciated by the masses, I believe.

Agreed. I get a huge kick out of that line up there: "You know what is easy? Installing an app on both your PC or Mac and your TouchPad."

NO. What is easy is using the basic already built in remote capabilities that every Windows PC has had available for the last 11 years. While installing a 3rd party remote utility CAN be useful (See; Go To Assist for help desk techs) Having to install multiple 3rd party apps that duplicate existing and already installed software is stupid.

I want a quality RDP app that will let me use Win 7's built-in SRDP capabilities. If I'm going to plunk down $500+ for a tablet, it had better DAMN well be able to replace my laptop. (Note, this is why I don't have ANY tablet yet. None of them, especially the iPad, are capable of replacing my Laptop.)

What about Logmein? it's the best remote app and it is available on all other platforms.

Android users had to nudge LogMeIn for months to get their version of Ignition. It would be great id HP would push from their end, but HP probably has an agreement with Citrix that prevents such a push.

It's all on us.

Also, how about TeamViewer?

Teamviewer actually works if you go through their web client. The only issue is typing, since the virtual keyboard doesn't pop-up. It works with a bluetooth keyboard however.

Logmein and all other remote-access applications are expressly prohibited in my 18,000-user enterprise environment. We allow two things: RDP and VNC over SSH. I want an RDP application as well; I'd be happy enough with a basic RDP application, even if it would mean decreasing the security settings on some of the systems I access.

Neat-o! But this is not an enterprise-ready solution. Come on HP... we need a real RDP client!

Make sure it has encryption!!!!!

If I could plus the Logmein comment more I would.

Awesome! I could definitely use this!

So I have Guitar Pro 5 installed on my computer. Will this app let me open it(or any other program) and use/view on my TouchPad? I haven't used any remote desktop type of programs before so just wondering what sort of limitations there are.

I have the same questions.... So how do you use an app like this? Can I access most files and edit them, or am I limited to files within this app? AND, if I am limited to files within this app, can I easily convert, say, a word doc into this app?

Any insite you folks have would be great. I bout my Touch Pad to work on my novel wherever I am, and so far that hasn't worked out very well. I'm still getting a ton of use from it in areas I hadn't planned on but... I'd like to edit word files.

Remote desktop products essentially turn your TouchPad (in this case) into a remote keyboard/mouse/monitor for your PC. Any apps you run execute on the PC, not the TP. Basically, screen updates, keyboard input and (simulated) mouse movements are sent over the network (WiFi) between the PC & TP.

In theory an app that runs on your Windows PC is by default compatible since it's still running on your PC. That said, there's a big caveat: Things that stream video usually don't work well as the bandwidth just isn't there to send the constant screen updates.

sledge007 - I'd say probably. GP should be OK.

Wade - You'd be accessing & editing using the apps on your PC, i.e. MS Word or whatever. So no conversion is necessary and you also don't have to copy the file between PC & TP to move updates around.

Actually, Splashtop streams video very well. I use it on ipad2 and I am surprised how fast it is. It blows LogmeIn away. The only feature LogmeIn has over Splashtop is the ability to upload/download files between the ipad2 and PC. I use that feature to back up pictures to my home PC when I am away from home.

Logmein /loads/ on the touchpad and you you can click things, but there's no way to force the keyboard to open in the browser.

So, if you just have to click thigns on the remote system, Logmein works. If you have to drag or type, you're SOL.

After this, all I need is a terminal emulator and graphix accell and no more laptop for me. Ever! So yeah, the test/softlaunch really sucked and I was already on some buyer's remorse sh** before buying it because I knew I was GONNA buy the TP regardless of the reviews. Honestly, I'm becoming REALLY optimistic about what is going on here, but to keep MY hopes alive, they NEED to deliver the OTA IN JULY! Let's do it HP!

Yeah, a fast OTA would be great... I used to love it when they came in over Sprint, kind of like christmas morning. And yes, I am a nerd at heart.

The hopes and dreams you guys have of that magical OTA fix. Meanwhile Veer owners wonder what OTA updates are since they've never received one.

I actually rephrase my statment. This program will not help me. I need something that allows me to take control of the PC like Logmein or Teamviewer in which I can log out of the user and log into another user.

Keep those apps a comin'. we will have everything we need really soon :)

"does has VPN"

I can haz VPNz? (Hi, Derek!)

Hold the phone, forget the app, where do I get THAT keyboard?!? Oh, to have arrow keys...

While you're at it, can you through in a 10 key pad pulled in on a pane from the right side?

Yeah, where can i get that keyboard? Uhg...arrow buttons?!!?!?

Anyone who thinks that they are going to get regular useful use out of a PC application via a remote desktop app has never really used one. The lag gets old pretty quick. I wouldn't think anyone would want to spend any significant time on it.

Over a WAN that can sometimes be the case but in an office or home environment where you're running wireless G or better the lag isn't bad for most average tasks.

As I noted above you're not going to want to watch video via RDP but casual web browsing and document editing are fine.

I'd be most happy with openvpn + ssh. Are these possibilities?

I'm very excited and been waiting like many previous users for a while. THANKS Splashtop! Sorli...

This still isn't the solution I am looking for. I need an app that can connect via Microsoft RDS. It is not practical to install an application on every server and computer in the enterprise.

The reason I would want this is to be able to open and view CAD files in the field. I have no need to edit CAD files on a tablet. But being able to bring up a drawing while visiting a jobsite to verify designed condtions are being met would be huge.

This is among the biggest "no brainer" apps for both pad and phone: a flexible way to extend the function of these limited devices (small battery, processor, memory, limited connectivity) to more powerful machines. HP should be deeply supporting this.

VNC and RDP would be much more useful to me.
Maybe in home use, splashtop might be OK, it is not useful for office use: Would You install the splashtop server on all clients and servers in a bussiness?

In my office, I would never be allowed to install a third party application for remote control.

BTW: The Build-In VPN in WebOS 2 is not very useful too. It only works with cisco-routers.

I strongly hope HP will enhance it in WebOS 3

Your company's gotta use Cisco gear! Mine works great with AnyConnect. It was a ridiculously easy setup! :p

Yeah, Cisco VPN on Touchpad doesn't work at my company either.

Wonderful.
