Sprint on path to get Pre Plus? Wither C40? 163

by Dieter Bohn Tue, 20 Apr 2010 11:32 am EDT

In the wake of the news that Radio Shack is no longer carrying the Sprint Palm Pre, we've been getting some information that gives hope to one of our fond wishes: that Palm straight-up end of life the original Palm Pre and Palm Pixi and replace them both with the Palm Pre Plus and Palm Pixi Plus on Sprint. It's time for some good old-fashioned rumor-mongering.

A couple of RadioShack employees have said they've heard from Sprint that they're aiming to get those very devices by 'summer.' We also have heard from a few Sprint people that Sprint and Palm are no longer sending out refurbished units for warranty replacements. If your Palm Pre breaks, you get a shiny new one instead of a factory-refurbished one. That could be a sign that Palm is straight-up giving up on trying to refurbish old units and instead would rather clear out remaining Pre inventory in preparation for something new.

Of course, our fondest wish is for something fresh and new instead of just more Pre Plus. On that front there's been the barest of movement on the rumors surrounding the mythical C40 from Sprint's product backend. Apparently a quite reliable source is dropping hints that we can expect a thinner, wider, faster, 4G-enabled phone with a form-factor that still stays true to the Pre's slider roots. We like the sound of that.

Thanks all you anonymous tipsters!

So this probably means the non plus versions will be disappearing fron o2 shelves in Europe?

I would assume so. And I also wonder about the future of the Pre in Canada. No rumour or mention of the Plus model coming up North, and no Pixie whatsoever, Plus or otherwise.

Bell still has tons of Pres in stores. I only did exchanges during my first 15 days so I got 2 new Pres, not sure beyond this if I'm getting new ones.

Bell does the warranty for Palm, Palm Canada doesn't, it must go through Bell.

this works on my Sprint Pre. In the phone dialer, dial ##786# and look mid-way down to RECONDDATE and RECONDSTATUS to see if your phone is brand new. My phone has a date and says Yes so therefore it's not new. (Ive had it switched out since I've bought it)

Helllllllllo EVO!!

To be honest, I'm getting sick of everyone saying EVO this and EVO that. The EVO is great hardware for sure, but the Android OS is garbage, in my opinion, and can't compare to webOS in terms of quality. If you want the EVO so bad, just get it and stop talking about it on a Palm fourm. Personally, I'm staying with my Pre until HP/Palm comes out with new phone hardware, which will probably make everyone that switched to an EVO sorry that they had. I've been eligible to upgrade to a new phone on Sprint since Janurary, but haven't because I like webOS that much and I've used the Android 2.1 OS and am very unimpressed by it.

I absolutely will not upgrade to a Plus, but I would gladly take the plunge for the version of C40 described above.

Completely agree. If I'm going to spend a contract extension on something, it's not going to be 8GB of additional storage and 256MB of additional RAM. It's going to be something like the EVO 4G or a Pre2 (if such a thing exists).

well said. Screw sprint if they try this.

Why screw Sprint? They don't have control over what phones Palm chooses to make or even who gets them.

i dont think it would be a bad idea to keep the pre and pixi plus as entry level phones, but we definitely need something new. I'd grab up a plus in the meantime. Especially if something just happens to happen to my Pre *hint hint* and they wanna replace it with a plus!

nice.... Bring it on

I hope that Palm doesn't think that it can continue to skimp on the screen size. I like my Pre a lot and I really like webOS and am willing to put up with the lower number of apps. But I won't accept another small screen.

If the next device doesn't offer me a screen at least as large as the Droid, my next phone will be an Android device.

And there are an equal number of people who would disagree with you. I know quite a few people with the iPhone whose major complaint is the size.
There are a lot of people who want their phone fit in their back pocket, in their purse, where ever they want to carrier it and not continuously be reminded they have a phone on their person.

Personally, I would like a bit bigger screen than the Pre, but the best strategy would be a larger screen model and another model with a form factor similar to the Pre.

There is a reason that 76% of all Droid owners are men and I don't think Pre wants to ignore the fairer sex.

Precisely. If Palm follows the long and thin style of most rival touchscreens then I have no further interest. I want a device that will fit easily in my pocket. With everything else I need to carry on a daily basis I simply do not have space for a bloated device. The form factor of the Pre is perfect for my use and I prefer it to the generic alternatives.

You see. That's what the Pre and Pixi is for. I am a person who wants a phone that can have a big on-screen keyboard. Most of the women I know don't really care about smart phones, they just want something that will do calls. Men on the other hand love smart phones and want bigger screens. The reason that, what was it, 70% of android users are men. I want the HTC EVO. That will be my next phone because Palm won't be able to produce anything that comes close to that device. Infact, the only phone that comes close which hasn't come out yet is the iPhone 4th Gen. (At least from what the rumors are) The thing is, EVO is going to be the best featured phone for a long time. At least a year. Sorry Palm, I just got to go with what suits my wants; front facing camera for video chat, connect up to 8 devices via MiFi feature, 4.3" screen (the phone itself isn't much bigger then the iPhone), 8mp camera, 720 HD recording, HDMI port to watch movies and videos on a TV, that are in the device, and last but not least 4G data connection. That is going to be one amazing phone. Well, I hope Palm does something quick because they are sinking and they are sinking fast. Oh, and I'm a current Pre owner.

Evo, the best feature phone, sure. At least for a week. LOL, it's not even out yet and most makers are already spec-ing phones to release that blow Evo out of the water. And, for that week and beyond, it's still just an Android.

Spot on. I love how pocketable the Pre is. They could stand to make it very slightly larger, but I prefer compact.

I agree, as well, I really like the size of my Pre. If they can increase the screen space a little within the form factor that would be fine, but I really don't want a ginormous slab phone. Also, I haven't had an build quality issues yet. If there is no C40, or whatever, available on Sprint by September, but the Plus is, then I will upgrade to the Plus. I am with webOS/Palm for the long haul...if they go down, I'll use my Pre/Plus or whatever model until it falls apart.

And for those folks there is the Pre Plus. But for those of us that want a big screen there is nothing. Palm already has a product for the people who want a compact smartphone. It's time for one for those of us that are willing to sacrifice pocket space for a larger screen.

This is exactly what I was thinking! Palm needs a 3.7" screen device for other people who prefer a better screen! With a 3.7" and 800*480 pixel I would buy one immediately. A lot of people like a bigger screen!

I have absolutely no issues with the size of the Pre. I like the look and feel. If they would not have had the hardware issues, it would have been fine in the current form for me. But slightly bigger would not be a problem either.

+1
I'd really like to see a 3.7" screen with webOS.
Palm Pre 3.1" screen is too small when compared to iphone 3.5" and Droid 3.7"

If Palm does not have a new device on Sprint this summer it will either mark their seemingly inevitable demise or show that initial release on Sprint was in fact a contributing factor to their demise, and that they no longer care about Sprint as a carrier. Pre Plus may be fine for those coming from other phones, but not quite good enough for those of us who will have struggled with the original Pre for a year.

I love WebOS, it's head over heels the best mobile OS, but mounting evidence is pointing to a mass exodus to Android. I'll give them until July 1 before I jump ship.

First,"it's head over heels the best mobile OS" makes absolutely no sense. Maybe, WebOS is head and shoulders above any other mobile OS? Secondly, no one cares that your gonna jump ship. It is sooo annoying reading all these comments saying how much you want to leave.

why are you such a die hard palm fan... what have they done for you besides selling you a toy.. great OS yes... but so foolish of them to install it on a toy haha when i can upgrade you dam right i will.. why would i not if there is something better out there????? use ur head

@peaceout92 You see, it's simple. People that bought the Palm Pre were excited when it first came out so they joined the Pre community. Now that there are way better phones out, hardware and spec wise at least, people want to share their excitement that they are buying the lastest and greatest. The EVO truely is the lastest and greatest so most Pre owners will be getting the EVO. Sorry, that's just the way it is and you have to deal with it! The beauty of free speech.

That's fine just do all this to people who care. I am sure the people at Android Central will be glad to hear about your decision. I bought my phone knowing that I signed a 2 year contract. I looked at the phone and made the decision that I could use it for 24 months. It does the job that I want it to with bonuses. I don't want to hear that you made a bad decision to sign a 24 month contract that you only wanted 9 months of... and you spelled my name wrong.

If the prospects of a great Evo or Android device were so wonderful, you'd think they'd be over at androidcentral learning more about what is can do (or not). If they're unhappy with Palm, they really should be learning more about the multiversioning of Android apps and o/s. Great h/w is only truly great when it has great o/s.

@johnnydigital What does your pre not do that any other smartphone does? Excluding things like screen size which you were completely aware of before buying it.

@ pieceout92: If no one cares, then why you'd take the time to reply, you pretentious jerk (that was a rhetorical question before you feel the need to correct).

Well guess what, here's another one. I'm jumping ship if this rumored new Palm device doesn't manifest, in a form an announcement, before the EVO drops. I'm on my 6th Palm Pre, and tired.

Don't forget your friends on the way out.

If the Pre Plus/Pixi Plus are the only additions within the next 6 months, Palm will be kaput! I sure hope they have the mythical C40 out sooner rather than later.

I wouldn't say that, cuz even though we would prefer a newer model the pre plus ok. shoot it's better than going to iphone or a droid.

I did say that because while I agree I am not jumping ship many people will and when you are on the brink of going away you need more subscribers not fewer. Just get on a android forum and read how many people are leaving the Pre for the EVO. I think if they just make some sort of announcement before the EVO arrives they will be O.K. If the announcement is just the Plus, it's curtains in my humble opinion.

You don't have to get on an android forum to see how many people are leaving the Pre for Evo.

http://forums.precentral.net/palm-pre/238969-anyone-else-ditching-pre-ht...

great point!

Give us a 4G with a portrait slide-out keyboard - a Nexus One screen, faster processor - micro-SD slot and keep improving WebOS and we have a winner.

- no landscape keyboard - yuk (don't want to HAVE to use two hands)
- a Virtual Keyboard that WORKS and pops up when I need it - especially in landscape mode

HAS to be this summer or it will be too late - too many slick android devices - maybe already too late.

Palm HAS to find a way to show people that WebOS is the easiest and best UI out there... I keep blowing people away with how easy it is to search, find a contact, just start typing or launch an app... not too cluttered and clean!

Even with the Pre as it is - there is not another device out there I would trade even up for.

Still shocked no one else is competing on the Touchpad ... that is STILL a difference maker

Oh, and 32gb base memory too (or an SD slot).

It's time for Palm to jump over the bar that the iPhone sets not limbo just under it like they did with the Pre.

The iPhone 4 will come standard with 32gb. This is Apple's standard MO, double the memory with each new version. Palm ignored this with the Pre and we got stuck with 8gb while the base 3GS came with 16gb.

Palm, you win by exceeding the competition, not matching it.

couple of things:

So if my Palm Pre breaks (I have a warranty with Best Buy) in the summer time, do I get a Palm Pre Plus to replace it?

Also, with this news, I think I'll hold off on the EVO 4G. But if Palm announces this, we need to have it in store at most 6 weeks after it is announced. We can't wait 4-5 months anymore

Cingular did that for me when my third Treo 650 got returned. They just sent me the new 680, which I have had for 3.5 years now. If I needed to return the phone, I would hold until the + is in the channels, and hopefully the original is gone from inventory It will be the same "price" or less than you originally paid.

What a great phone it is ... until ATT / Palm allowed that horrific 2.1? firmware update which turned it into another lag-monster. I could kick myself for updating that but have never taken the time to flash a good ROM to the device. Waiting on the GSM Pre+.

They likely still have Pre's on the shelf forwarranty use.

I hope the rumors of new hardware are true. The release of the EVO on sprint was getting very tempting, but after this rumor my temptations are fewer. If Palm could release a phone with some great hardware I would be more than willing to stay onboard with them. I love the OS, and brag it up all the time. I love the abilities to improve this phone by first party apps, third party, homebrew, patches, overclocking... And so on. I hope for palms sake and all of us WebOS lovers that they can pull an ace out of there sleave on this dark hour in there business life.

I'm wondering whether Palm is still going to go with the plastic screen & shiny plastic body when nobody else is doing that (maybe the Kin?). Apple is clearly going with the glass screen, ceramic back and aluminum frame.

Apple owns a patent on Glas multitouch. This is part of why Palm is able to dodge a lawsuit that HTC is not... Plastic multitouch.

why do people always talk about junping ship on here? We don't care if you jump ship. I LOVE PALM AND THE PALM PRE/PLUS BEST PHONE OUT THERE

Because they're whiny morons. Nothing wrong with keeping Palm honest but the "If palm don't do X then they will fail/I will leave" messages really get old.

I should drop over the TiPB and see if they have the same problem...

Tradition. It started in early Feb when the kids demanded Palm release the Pre since "first half of 09" had started.(and had already started when Pre was announced).

I love Palm more then anyone out there, and I've sold many of my friends on it. However if Palm can't keep up with competition then why would I stay with them? I'm a tech junkie, I need the latest and greatest, and I need it NOW....Palm has to adapt to this because I know for a fact I'm not the only tech junkie out there. This doesnt mean I won't come back to WebOS when and if they finally launch a product that will give me my fix. But until they do, I need to get my fix else where, and the EVO is looking way too sexy right now.

PS: I will pay over $1,000 for a WebOS tablet without hesitation if they kept it as sleek as the ipad but running WebOS

Will sprint be selling the EVO soon or it will be on big red only?

Boy it would be so funny if Big Red had an exclusive on Evo in that they don't have a SINGLE wimax antenna.

Yet, I know a couple dozen mouth breathers here that would buy it from them just to say it has a 4G radio and big screen. Even though it would draw a 4G signal.

I accually did get a new replacement over the weekend!!! NO MORE REFERB PHONES!!! Now I have three chargers three pairs of earbuds... I am set!!!

Was that on Best Buy protection or Sprint's TEP? Just sent my Pre out with Best Buy last Tuesday...I'd love a shiny new phone!

lemme know what happens please. Oh and by the way they send out refurbs in the new box, with buds and charger.

all I care about is that Palm releases a new device that isn't accompanied with the sluggish nature found on the pre and above all else, has better hardware. The pre is a great phone but without protection it's doomed. Palm needs a fast, durable, more reliable webOS phone that doesnt scream 1st gen smartphone! Please Palm! - tethering on sprint pre, increased storage and memory, flash support, hardware and speed improvements! Is it too much to ask for?!

Gotta wonder how easily units can be rebadged if made for one carrier, then allocated to another. Is it possible to re-appropriate the VZ units that were canceled before the launch? And can they send non+ CDMA units meant for Sprint overseas for a launch there.

I have tinkered with the Sprint Hero. For me, Android is not an option.

I babysat a droid for two weeks, setting it up for a friend. I deserve better. Android 2 is capable but awkward and wicked structured.

Yeah they need a new phone. I will not upgrade to a Plus. I love webOS but they cant pull this move on us. They need to compete and they need a new and improved device. Not a lot of companies get chances like these. But some posters are right that EVO looks sexy but if Palm came out with a phone with similar specs im staying. I moved form my Treo 600 to a WinMo phone and missed it terribly.

how about on the c40 do something really radical bump the memory to 64gb the chips are available That could really get them going sales wise I would think.

I like this a lot, Palm can't match the iPhone media player, but they CAN top them in media storage. And it's not something that would negatively impact the battery.

Thank you! Finally!!! Atleast rumor about a new device. Hadn't heard anything about the "C40" in some time. Was starting to get worried seeing how Pre's and Pixi's are still going to be LAUNCHED in France and AT&T here. I doubt they will announce a new device before they launch there. And don't announce the Plus versions on Sprint as the "new" phones. Been with Palm for years now. Since my Treo 600. But that Evo has started to look more and more tempting. Please don't make us wait another 6 months.

PALM needs better marketing with w/e new phone they come out with. My original Pre is so much better than most of the phones out there right now and most people don't even know what its capable of. Thank goodness there won't be anymore creepy woman ads.

yea,it's available for 1.4.0 and 1.4.1.1 also. try this link; http://www.mediafire.com/?txtiqiymwo3

Do anybody knows when 800Mhz is available for 1.4.1.1 ???
Or maybe it is already there ?

800Mhz patch was great. I'm missing it so much :(

You can use the current 800MHz on 1.4.1.1. Go to the overclocking thred in the forums and use the new .ipk installation method.

Guys,

Thank you for fast response.
I will try it today.

The C40 is withering? Heck it ain't even out yet. Perchance you meant "Whither C40"?

I'm surprised it took this many comments before anyone said anything about that!

I have been living with a defective pre for MONTHS(in dec. I replaces my third b/c the screen just randomly cracked when I taped the "home" button) this one has a pretty noticeable Oreo, a large dark spot on the screen AND the power button will just stop working ALL the time(a minor issue is that half of the keys don't light) do you guys think there is any chance I will be able to just switch to the pre plus if it comes out?

they have tried to get me to switch to the moment and hero before

I dont want to "scam" a C40 but I think that these hardware issues are BULL and they should do something to fix it, I'd rather not have to go to android to get a phone that will hold together

BTW I tried to get this pre replaced last week and they told me that they seem to have NO replacement pres... kinda scared me at the time.

Sorry dude. I Don't get it. I know there people here that have Pre's. And we all had no issus so far. Not even a scratch. You already got your third replacement? What the hell are you doing to your phone?

possibly not much, my wife's keyboard on her day 1 pre went dead after about 3 months, and the power button just stopped working on her second phone, and she just got a referb that is in great shape. we're crossing our fingers that it stays that way.

i, on the other hand, still have my day one pre, but the headphone jack is jacked so I tried to get a referb 3 times but the oreo was already too noticeable on each one, so i rejected them all and am now waiting for a new refresh of devices with a bluetooth headset to help me get through it.

i certainly have not seen new pre's as referb units yet. maybe i'll try again next month.

I had an issue with my headphone jack on my first Pre, there's a microswitch in there that got stuck, so my phone always thought there was a headphones in the jack...couldn't get it to ring or go back to the regular speaker. I ended up cleaning/adjusting the jack with an oversized pipe cleaner and it worked.

After I cracked my screen I got an insurance replacement and it was a new one, not refurbed. The replacement had a slightly different (better) build quality than my day one Pre.

You don't have to get it.

I was one that "poopooed" all of this shoddy hardware talk until it started happening to me.

First Pre, touchscreen just died. Out of nowhere. No rhyme nor reason, just quit.

Second Pre, Oreo-ed like a SOB. Right out of the box. The condition was so bad in a two week period, that I had to return it.

Third Pre, the USB is starting to act up.

It's completely damn absurd. I, quite frankly, have seen some shoddy hardware in my years on this earth, but this has to be the worst in recent memory. I baby my gear. Doesn't matter, the Pre comes beat up and failing right out of the box.

OMFG!! @ all these "oreo" hw comments. I would put $$ on 95% of these oreo issues being self inflicted. I'm now surrounded by about 13 Pre's and not ONE has any of these oreo issues.

Yes, my Pre slider moves about *1mm either way. One of the 13 moves about 2mm but the owner admitted to "messing with it" and caused slight damage.

It's like my dumb@ss friend that bought a Saturn SC2 and said "Hey, the doors on these don't dent" and proceeded to KICK the car door....putting a dent in the door. OMGWTF!!

"Hey, I hear iPhone screens crack if you put them in your back pocket when sitting,"
"Oh yeah? Let me check it out"
!!CRACK!!
"Oh noeesss".

/rolleyes

my 10th pre just came in the mail today.. yet to open box.. but if there is even the slightest problem it will go back! i like webos i HATE the pre.. plastic toy!!! i could care less about if palm makes it or not... they should fail simply because they can not make phones... they should stick to only making OS's !! I am locked in on a 3 year plan.. first chance i get i am out!! unless this "Infamous" C40 drops and i dont feel like there is something better out there.. but givin palms track record.. the C40 will still be behind the mark and I will laugh and move on!!!

Man I baby my tech... the Oreo doesnt bother me that much, I just dream for a phone that feels "built" and not tossed together...

when I say the screen cracked when I "tapped" the home button, I MEAN TAPPED not quick or hard... just tapped and watched my screen spiderweb

I am never jumping ship... I LOVE Palm... and WebOS is the best. my first cell phone was a Centro, my wife had a Treo 755p, then I got my Pre and she got my Centro. now finally she has her Pixi(we got it through the mail and it wouldn't boot on arrival/ got it replaced and the refurb wouldn't allow Devmode access but this Pixi is Perfect)

A new device with 4G for Sprint would be killer. I was going to switch to EVO 4G now I will have to wait and see what Palm is bringing to the table.

I still believe they need 4 devices, 2 of the type of PRE and Pixi, 1 like Evo 4G with soft keyboard and one like Droid or tilt2 with a landscape keyboard. I am sure that is not going to happen because Palm is one small company however licensing webOS can help make all form factors possible.

That said I want a bigger screen on PRE. I like the vertical keyboard (allows universal search when I start typing) but I think this can be accomplished by a double tap on gesture bar to bring up a virtual keyboard instead.

It would be ideal for me if a 4G - C40 came out on Sprint as well as the Pre+ and they lowered the price of the Pre+. I expect that it will be at least another year before 4G gets rolled out in my area so I could upgrade to a pre+ now (from old Verizon "dumb" phone) and upgrade to the c40 next year when it makes sense for my area.

all I care about is that Palm releases a new device that isn't accompanied with the sluggish nature found on the pre and above all else, has better hardware.

C40 = Instant Nerdgasm :D

How is it that everybody wants a huge screen? More than likely, a huge screen means an accompanying increase in phone size. I love the size of my Pre, and would definitely be disappointed with a bigger phone. Phone size was one of the biggest complaints of the Treos, esp as compared to the iPhone. Seems to me that we got our wish for a smaller phone, and now we're complaining about screen size. It's possible that the screen size could be increased while keeping the same physical size of the Pre by shrinking the bezel, but that bezel is probably crucial to the curves of the Pre, which I also like...

...so, what would I suggest in it's place? Not sure...On balance, while greater resolution and screen size would be cool, I might choose the smaller size of the Pre over a much larger phone. Even the iPhone feels like a monstrosity in my hand compared to the Pre.

anyone that wastes an upgrade to go to the Plus version isn't making a wise decision.

Look, Palm has to go head to head with Evo. They need to bringit in a big way!

I posted this on the RadioShack Rumor thread and am posting it here again.

Palm Really need to release a new device soon or they will be falling far behind on the smart phone race. The new HTC and rumors about a new iphone: please palm make us proud.

I had this on NPR news (88.5FM) this morning on my to work. You check it out your self.

Yep, right on time for leaks and rumors. Once the Pre+ launches on AT&T in May, there will be time for an announcement about C40 for a summer or autumn launch. All of us who got in on 6/6/09 and are Sprint Premier will be able to upgrade. All the dishes are simmering nicely...

anyone that wastes an upgrade to go to the Plus version isn't making a wise decision.

+1 would seem like a complete waiste of an upgrade. Especially since we already know that hardware is still an issue with Pre Plus. I hope this rumor is just that, a rumor and nothing more ever comes of it.

since 4G coverage will be sparse at first, would the 4G phone also support 3G, or would it fall back to 1xEVDO when it couldn't find a 4G signal?

3G

Thanks. Otherwise the early 4G phones would be useless.

I hope the C40 is not the code name for the Pre+ or a 4G version of the Pre+. I think it would be a good line up phones, Pre+, Pixi +, and C40(new hardware\4G).

I love WebOS but I also love having the latest and greatest hardware... Pre Plus will NOT cut it. If this is all Palm is going to offer on Sprint this summer then I will most likely grab the Evo.

Not a chance I'll use my phone upgrade for Palm Pre Plus. The overclocking has fixed my too many cards issue and everything else is just small incremental enhancements. Now if my Pre dies and they want to hook me up with a Pre Plus as a replacement then that would be cool.

Here's an idea:

Pixi Plus: $49
Pre Plus: $99
C40: $199

Not sure it will make much difference if the EVO is Sprint's flagship device, however. It will just be a case of Pre vs. Droid in VZN all over again, where the Droid wins because it's the flagship device.

I don't think you'll see Palm announce anything until after the next iPhone is announced. The gap between when the Pre was announced and when it was released made it almost old news when it was released. There needs to eb a shorter window between announcement and release, and it needs to be announced AFTER the new iPhone in order to try to steal some of that hype, instead of vice versa.
Releasing before the EVO would be great as well, but that's not too likely.

Just got a refurb'ed Pre from Palm by Fed-ex yesterday so the refurb'ed thing isn't true at least.

I expect they'll send out what refurbs they have left before moving to the new Pre's. It also may depend on whether it's a Sprint replacement or an Asurion replacement.

It was direct from Palm. The article says Palm and Sprint are no longer sending out refurbs, when they apparently still are.

The article says there is a RUMOR that new phones instead of refurbs are being sent out.

RUMOR!

This is a rumor that is partly backed up by the reports of members here. Some are receiving new phones, some are still receiving refurbs. Blows that you didn't get a new one, but that doesn't make the rumor wholly false, it just means that at this point, there's a mix.

when the + comes out will I be able to get a plus replacement if my phone has to get replaced??

Since Sprint got the Pre first, I would like to see them one up the other carriers with a new Pre. It would feel a little anti-climatic to have our "new" hardware be the same hardware that Verizon and AT&T would've already had for months.

Forget the plus, what about the Pre 2?

I've had my pre for about 7 months. This is my first smart phone, and it is very smart indeed! I love it, but do wish it was not so sluggish at times.

we've learned the new iphone has a forward facing cam for video chat. Couple a new pre with that and sprints data services, and that would be pretty neat. I travel and lot and would love to have high quality video chat ability from my phone!

would also enjoy a slightly larger screen size, for web browsing especially.

we will see what palm comes out with. Either way, I have no intention of getting rid of my pre for any other OS. I will go down with the ship if it happens and love every minute of it.

I just got a replacement from ausuiron for a sprint palm pre I lost, got it on 4/7/2010 and I am sure it was NOT new but a refurb, the codes said it was built aug 2009...I picked up a nokia e72 gsm unlocked phone for travel in non-cdma places and it feels awesome in the hand, I hope the new palm device is like that form factor--they MUST have a new device coming out that like, or everybody that got pres on 6/6/09 will get sprint EVOs when they come out and eligible for that upgrade!

Now I am on my 6/6/09 Pre and it still looks and performs like new. All issues have been caused and resolved by yours truly (rooting, patches, etc

Still on my 1st Pre. I have the crack by the usb door but everything else is great. I wouldn't risk upgrading to a + and getting a wonky keyboard. With 800mhz patch I'm happy. Bigger screen would be cool if the handset stayed pocketable.

But if Palm were about to release a new phone they'd have lots of inventory building up in their supply pipeline - both new unit stock and extra old unit stock to tide them over while the transition.

Nah, the only possible explanation for Palm's remarkably high inventory is that they're idiots and that Palm phones aren't selling...

Really? The Pre isn't selling as well as Palm expected? What rock have you been living under...

The Pre was marketed horribly, yes, there are also hardware issues, but name me a phone that hasn't had hardware complaints and you win a cookie. They all hove hardware issues, especially first-gen phones.

The non-plussed phones have a much smaller market to hit, being only on Sprint and a few international carriers, so moving that inventory is naturally going to be a lot harder.

Forget the plus. I'd rather have a fresh new model/form factor. Palm, release the Kraken!!!! Lol :)

Hey, I like that. The C40 could be called the Palm Kraken. ;-)

or the Phoenix (rising from the ashes)

I like it!

+1

they need a new phone asap my upgrade kicks in on June 6th hello android hello evo good by Palm. UNLESS Palm comes up with something as good as the evo but i doubt it very much. its been fun but i need more

Not sure how true this is. I just got a refurb as a replacement 2 days ago.

I do hope Palm releases new hardware this summer. The timing will be hard but I think it could work. Like brendilon posted, if they can fit the announcement between the iPhone announcement and the release of the EVO it may work. I think the idea would be to release the C40, Pre & Pixi Plus on Sprint all at the same time to give consumers 3 options: The Monster smartphone, the compact capable smartphone and the entry level smartphone.

Go for broke with the new hardware and then market the hell out of them, spend all the money. They have got nothing to lose. Of course I don't think this will happen. Sprint folks will most likely just get the Pre & Pixi Plus this summer with the possibility of new hardware in the fall (depending on the outcome of the sale, licensing, merger)

I find it hard to believe that Sprint will announce a 4G webOS device around the summer. Wouldn't they focus on their new flagship phone (Evo 4G) and then later release more 4G devices? Perhaps the c40 is just the Pre Plus :/

Idk, but I hope they do have something in the kitchen.

Sprint isn't going to say No to an additional 4g phone this summer. Options are a good thing, and Sprint (generally) understands this. The faster they can get more 4g devices out, the bigger their edge in the overall 4g marketplace.

BTW, is anyone else dreading the iSheep boasting about having a "4g" phone when the iPhone 4g comes out this summer because they're too dumb to know the difference between a 4g network and the 4g that Apple slaps on their phone as a name?

I must agree

Sprint has always released good specs on new phones. Only exception I know was 8 gigs of flash without SD on current devices and sh!tty battery. I hope they learned their lesson because I learned mine.

I got my pre replaced friday, and its the same pre, no 4g plus love for me, fml...

Palm is up for sale folks and no one expects it to be sold as a going concern. Everyone there is focused on either getting a bigger retention bonus or finding another job.

No one is focused on innovation, design, or getting a new class of handset to market. Carriers are focused on selling through their inventory if they can and won't be interested in a new Palm device if one did exist.

The Pre was a great phone for what it was and Palm gave it their best shot. It's a hard business and their best shot fell short.

>>> No one is focused on innovation, design, or getting a new class of handset to market

use ur head silly man!! it is up for SALE

I know that I'm not an idiot. But that does not mean everything has shut down. Do you think 1000 employees are sitting around drinking coffee?

i think they have bigger things on there minds, like finding a reliable job! its hard to focus when theres no light at the end of the tunnel

They may be looking for a job NOW, and perhaps for the last few weeks, but new hardware at most vendors probably is designed 6 months in advance, and manufactured at least a few months in advance. And the company probably has a roadmap that is a year or two out (though it may change, obviously).

So whatever comes out this summer was planned last winter or longer. The recent woos may impact the actual release date of the next product, or the design of another product further down the line.

I think the timeline that makes the most sense is what most are suggesting - they'll avoid any announcement as long as possible to avoid killing existing sales, then make an announcement JUST before the EVO and/or iPhone release date.

In the wake of what? I work for "The Shack" and could of told you guys we discontinued the Pre 3 weeks ago. If sprint really does "Plus" them..and they make it into this big ass "exciting" celebration.. then ugh! I'm over it.. It's been over a year and half since the Pre's been known.. since then.. Blackberry has launched the Storm 2.. HTC HD.. went to the HD2.. and obviously Apples on top of their shit and will have a June launch. My love hate relationship with Palm...is turning into.. I might switch to the dark side and go to android. I dont care if this "beyond" what I know and isnt simple.. get something done.. or they can go "PLUS" themseleves.

+ 100

Android isn't the dark side, it's gray. Apple is the Dark Side.

I don't mind "my teather" but when is sprint going enable the mobile hotspot that version gives them for free. I know my teather works but I don't want my whole family losing service cause I am trying to use my laptop. Come on sprint you can do better.

Yes, but you get TV and GPS navigation. VZ customers have to pay $10/month for GPS and TV/Content services aren't available to Palm phones at all.

At least you have a work-around. VZ customers don't.

I personally don't like the EVO. I'll upgrade to a Pre Plus if it becomes available on Sprint. Then if something new with WebOS comes out at a later date, i'll dish out the cash for that too, no big deal. I don't like anything else other than WebOS. Plain and simple. Hopefully it just lasts long.

Well then, since you don't see a need for a larger screen Palm should feel free to ignore the millions of iPhones and Droids and HD2's and Nexus 1's and the upcoming iPhone 4, and HTC incredible, etc etc. Clearly those devices are meaningless. Hell, stick with 8gb of RAM too, I'm sure there are plenty of people who don't need more than that.

'Cause if Shadowhawk don't want it, it can't be worth while!

its actually not RAM

I read a few of the of the earlier post... I think the notion of the Pre Plus coming to Sprint just to make a few bucks off of the already Pre owners is not the case. Sprint has always gotten the upgraded versions of there phones... And the great thing about that is when your older Pre goes out of wack again or gets cracked... WHALA ! You get a free upgraded version of the Pre Plus. But the only catch is you have to have insurance on your phone and the other is the Pre would have to be discountinued in there eyes. But knowing the the regular Pre gives them so many issues. I don't think they'll be a problem with getting the Plus as much as i've been back to get a replacement. But I say bring on the C40, I can't wait and hopefully with a Landscape QWERTY keyboard. My thumbs get cramped with this none stop commenting on the Pre...

@ shawdohawk, touchscreen gaming is hard with this small screen... I get frustrated, you'll still have the plus.

I WANT to be excited about the C40, I really do...

but I need more info! I cant just sit here and speculate to jizz my pants, haha.

I need some leaked info/pics/evidence. Something tangible!

For all we know the C40 could have been an lengthy adaptor cable the Sprint decided to never sell.

LOL, 40" cable.

Never understood why Sprint would create a part number so far in advance.

I called sprint yesterday and they sent out a replacement. It came today. It is a referbushed phone that was reconditioned on 4/1/2010,

Just a note on the rumor.

Same here. My slider was going so I brought it to the Sprint store and they sent me a replacement. My replacement was a reburb. with a date of 4/26/10. Maybe some people got a new phone, but that may have meant that the warehouse was out of refurb. units at that time. I received new phones of other brands in the past because they were out of refurb. units.

Im sorry but I am NOT renewing my contract to get another Pre of this same build just b/c it has more space and ram.. I love my Pre its a great phone but let's be real.. Its durablilty is straight trash.. Palm needs to fucking step their game up seriously and stop committing the same damn mistakes.. I understand we're all early adopters but if Plam gives sprint the plus in June and then I see 6 months the real next gen Pre on Verizon or some other carrier.. That will be the ultimate slap in the face to us.. IMO.. So if so.. Its Hello HTC EVDO and bye bye Palm

I like the rumor behind the C40 specs. So long as the form factor stays the same, I'm happy. I don't want a 2handed keyboard like the Droid. I like how small it is now, and if its smaller, that's great. Faster is good too. I hope some announcement comes soon, I would love to see what Palm can pull out of their ass to entice carriers and/or a future buyer of the company.

This needs to happen like... Now. :(
