Talkin' Pre -- Week ending 24 July 35

by Annie Latham Tue, 28 Jul 2009 12:08 pm EDT

A lot of folks were "Talkin' Pre" again this week and there were definitely some recurring themes. Here's the stuff we didn't get to last week.

Read on for creepy ad tweets, iTunes Whack-a-mole, web apps and web app games, and the top most-wanted Palm Pre features.

 Creepy Ad tops Tweets

Turns out we at PreCentral.net weren't the only ones who got the heebie jeebies from Palm's ads. It was a ginormous theme on Twitter, where you can find tons of tweets about just how creepy it all is. Feels like the reaction is a lot like how people barfed all over the Seinfeld ("It's pleather") ads with Bill Gates for Microsoft.

If the intent is to get people tweeting, Palm's agency succeeded.

I tend to agree with one "@mikelightman," who tweeted, "these Palm Pre commercials are truly horrendous. Goodby should get the business. They pulled off a minor miracle-they make Sprint look good."

And then there's Whack-a-Mole: the Apple-Palm Edition
Moving right along, technology analyst Tim Bajarin of Creative Strategies was asked for his thoughts regarding the news that Palm had re-enabled iTunes sync with the Pre. He told AP technology writer, Rachel Metz, that "he expects the technology equivalent of a game of whack-a-mole to continue for a while, because he doesn't envision Apple giving in to Palm."

Metz's story also included a comment from Palm spokeswoman Lynn Fox, who said her company thinks Apple is improperly using its USB vendor code. Metz wrote, "She would not elaborate, but presumably Palm believes Apple should not be allowed to set iTunes to respond only to devices with Apple's USB codes."

Dieter has written extensively about it here.

Maybe Google was right... Pre games accessible online.

Last week, Vic Gundotra, Google Engineering vice president and developer evangelist, told the Mobilebeat conference in San Francisco that the Web had won and users of mobile phones would get their information and entertainment from browsers in future. In his "Techblog" post for FT.com, Chris Nuttall wrote how Gundotra "claimed that even Google was not rich enough to support all of the different mobile platforms from Apple’s AppStore to those of the BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Android and the many variations of the Nokia platform."

The reason I bring this up was that coincidentally, one of our readers, Tristan, sent a tip about PlayScreen.com:

Great games for PALM PRE ON playscreen.com: access them from the web browser of the Palm Pre. There's a wide variety of games, so this website will do until the app catalog comes up to par.

Our Jason wrote about PlayScreen when they first launched their portal with 25 free Pre apps in early June. If you type www.playscreen.com/palmpre in your browser, you'll see all kinds of games: Sudoku, Bowling, Golf - Driving Range, Video Poker, Snowboard Alley, Straight Dice and more.

And check this out, there IS a Whack game!

Called iWhack, it looks like the mole is actually Steve Balmer.

I wonder if Version 2 will have the Podfather, Jon Rubinstein in place of Balmer?

Okay, enough with the creepiness, fun and games.

Here's one more for the road.

My list would be:

- Real Copy and Paste
- Type ahead / word suggestion / whatever it is called
- But notification light makes my top 3. When the phone is off at work, I have to turn it on to see if I have any updates.

Dude...I gotta admit, you make some good arguments here, but why the attack? Let the facts make your point. There's no need for name calling. The fact is, Apple is not a "little shi**y company". I hate Apple and Steve Jobs as much as anyone, but I have to acknowledge and respect their accomplishments. The ipod and iphone were both revolutionary devices. I will never own them, but I cannot deny their value in raising the bar in consumer electronics. I hate ipods because they don't offer some pretty basic functions that other MP3 players offer (voice recording, FM Radio, expandable memory, etc...). The iphone I hate mostly because it's on AT&T, but the attitude of iphone owners puts me off as well. They tend to be smug in their false sense of superiority. I just smile to myself knowing that I have the superior device. The Pre is a first rate device AND it's the first one that has drawn ANY attention from the Apple camp (officially, or from the fanbois). The fact that iphone users protest so loudly that the Pre is a flash-in-the-pan and will never measure up tells me that they're afraid that it truly will. The Pre blew the iphone 3g AWAY in almost every measurable respect. It took the 3gs to get just a few steps ahead and Palm is slowly catching up. Do you realize the significance of that? A first generation device from Palm is NEARLY as capable as a 3rd generation device from Apple AND the biggest differences can be fixed with a simple firmware/software update.

Look, my point is this: Apple execs AND users realize the Pre is REAL competition or they wouldn't bother to say anything about it. Things are definitely going to get interesting very quickly, but you simply can't discount the many accomplishments of the folks at Apple. They have always, and continue to make an excellent product. Don't resort to juvenile behavior and senseless name-calling. That makes you no better than the iphone fanbois claiming superiority because their phone can fart in 17 different languages and timezones simultaneously. Take the high-road and us Pre owners will show the iphone crowd what a REAL smart phone can do.

Great points, I agree whole heartily!

Yes! Zune Marketplace! So much better than iTunes

Zune Marketplace would be nice. I bought zune to say "suck it apple" I bought the pre to say "now swallow"

1) Change ringtones yourself
2) Better Copy and Paste
3) Amazon music downloads (or someone else)
4) Notification light (had it on my BlackBerry and i love it)

Do you mean Amazon music downloads over EVDO? Because we have that over WiFi? (Some have it over EVDO if they modded.)

I think Sprint just needs to get service in more areas.
Or... Palm needs to fix the fact that my bars still go from 1 to 5 causing drops in battery juice.

For me:
1. Video Recording
2. Enhanced Copy / Paste
3. Voice Dialing
4. A more customizable home screen (with more shortcuts than just 3).
5. Flash
6. Signal fix (my sister's BB Curve gets good signal in most areas. Why does the Pre have 1 bar when BB curve has 3?)

I'd be fine with just Video Recording, because I just hate how so many low-end phones have it but Pre doesn't.

I don't care for Palm developing their own software. I think it would be a waste of time.
Transferring music is very simple nowadays.
Instead, I would get their USB drive thing organized. Make a videos folder and be able to put music into playlists.
A better music application would be good too.

I understand people would want something like a Zune Marketplace, so if they could team up... haha, would be hilarious.

I second that!

Why does the Pre have 1 bar when BB curve has 3?

Because bars don't actually mean anything. They are not a good indicator of signal strength at all. Yeah, there's definitely a difference between 1 bar and full bars, but in between it doesn't really mean much.

PreCentral posted an article on how to get louder ringtones a while back. It worked beautifully for me. Check it out:

You don't need to connect to a computer to get wallpaper. Check out the wallpaper forums on PreCentral:

ohhhh Hulu app! That would make me aroused.

Cursor arrows/scroll bar-
I'm a chick that's not been told, to my face anyway, that I have man-hands. Even so, attempting to place my smallish finger just so between tiny characters to adjust the cursor placement- is nuts, or simply making me so.

commenting about HarlanL....hit the OJ button and swipe your finger from left to right to move it...

PREDICTIVE TEXT-
Didn't know what I had till it was gone. This omission on my Pre nearly resurrected my beat-up, Windows-crashing HTC Mogul from its cardboard box tomb. Regardless of application- Word, SMS, or email, the Mogul offered predictive text. If you're gonna place such a small physical keyboard on your phone, then please, please have mercy on the user.

System notification sound options-
Having a choice of a near-silent vibrate or all-to-subtle "kl-dong" don't really count as options do they?

Cursor arrows/scroll bar-
Thanks for the tip from below regarding moving the cursor with a little less effort (instruction manual, shmanual).

Voice Activated Dialing-
My 2002 pre-Jitterbug LG phone had this feature

Battery Life-
Utilizing a web OS + multi-tasking = hell on a battery, but I now literally panic if I realize I'm without a charger.

Flash player-
Don't quite understand how you release a web OS phone without this feature from day one.

All the above stated, the phone's so much fun. Doesn't hurt when a coworker comes over and starts drooling over my Pre and slamming her 3Gs iPhone. That's good times.
