Talkin' Pre -- Week ending 24 October 4

by Annie Latham Mon, 26 Oct 2009 7:18 pm EDT

In a week where Verizon's been in "Droid Does" mode while also tweeting that the Pre is coming in "early 2010," Research in Motion has been promoting "Love what you do," and Nokia sues Apple for patent infringement (They should be afraid of Apple, very afraid."), there was talkin' and tweetin' about patches, browsable apps and more...

Verizon & the Pre:   GigaOm asks if Verizon will put the same amount of energy into the Palm Pre as the Droid campaign.

Browsing Apps on the Big Screen: Palm now has the app catalog available for viewing via your desktop computer.

Classic 2.0 by with GooSync:

"Fear not, for Classic 2.0 came with the ability to quickly install a slew of free and trial Palm OS applications. Amongst those apps is GooSync, which will synchronize your Google Contacts and Google Calendar to your Palm OS device, or in this case the Palm OS emulator on your webOS device."

Push to Talk App on the Way? -- Agile Mobile  recently unveiled a preview of an app they’re working on: Agile Messenger for Palm Pre.

While the fact that messaging apps are on the way for the Pre is no surprise, the feature list that Agile claims for their app is surprising. We’re talking push-to-talk walkie talkie functionality, voice messages, and video messaging. And Agile Messenger is to support Google Talk, AIM, MSN, Yahoo, and ICQ chat.

Cavalcade of Apps: The catalog of apps for the Palm Pre continues to grow.  A place to see the apps is here.  Plus, here's a link to G4's 2 min look at some apps of note

Pre Reviews: With more Palm Pre smartphones becoming available worldwide, reviews continue to pour in. Here are a few examples:

  • IT PRO (Maggie Holland):  Head to head: iPhone 3GS vs. Palm Pre  Winner: Tie. At this moment in time, the Pre could well be better value. But tomorrow is another day. The same could be said of apps. With thousands of apps already and more arriving every day, Apple’s App Store runs rings around Palm’s. That said, its App Catalog is only just getting started and, with developer support, could gain momentum quite quickly.
  • Mobile Industry Review (Steve O'Hear): First impressions of the UK Palm Pre:  We like it!
  • SimplyPre's Palm Pre Experience: Broken into Day One and Day Two on the UK O2 network.
  • Totally Palmed (Dan Ramirez): HOUSE DIVIDED! Palm Pre vs. HTC Hero!  For me, I chose the latter, and have zero regrets. Is it perfect? Hell no. Battery life sucks, and I really miss some features like visual voicemail, etc. But I've enjoyed the hell out of the Palm Pre, and I love how Palm has continued to update it regularly.

Note: Dan also did a post that included "The Oreo Effect" and other things that can be easily fixed on the Pre.

Palm Pre Sightings: This time the sightings include Bones and ABC's new FlashForward series.

Not surprising since Sprint is sponsoring FlashForward. In fact, they've put together a promo that will allow the viewers to gain access bonus features that may include videos, photos or text messages. Here's how it works:

A keyword will appear briefly within the trailer that runs during the end credits of each episode. Sprint customers text the keyword to 22288 to access the bonus content.

Plus, a USA Today "Sighting":

That's a wrap!!

1st comment!!! not that big of a week for pre

Annie, if you're going to quote Dan Ramirez who uses the phrase "the latter," you need to maintain his order of review in your own writing. It should read "HTC Hero vs. Palm Pre," not vice versa. Otherwise his quote makes no sense. He chose the latter...the Palm Pre.

@SharonW:

You're quite observant! You are correct: my quote does NOT refer to the TITLE of that story, but to the sentence that came before it in my conclusion. It's merely taken out of context. To clear up any confusion, I chose the Palm Pre!

Just an update... My wife ended up choosing the Palm Pre as well! She turned in her HTC Hero yesterday. So far, she's happier already. For a gal who came from an iPhone, she sure knows how to multitask... she averages around 8 open cards at a time! I think she's getting the hang of it...

Great explanation, surely i thank you for receiving this information, it really valuable for me.
