Telcel nabs Pre in Mexico? 37

While our Spanish is admittedly quite rusty, we can see what’s going on here: it’s a Palm Pre running on GSM carrier Telcel in Mexico. The conversation indicates that Telcel will be the exclusive carrier of the Pre in Mexico, which runs up against Telefonica’s Movistar brand that spans much of Latin America. And just to show us it’s not some variety of trickery, the phone is shown to have both no Sprint apps and a SIM card slot, and with the QWERTY keyboard we know it’s also not an unlocked Pre stolen from O2 Germany.

Strangely, the video also makes a mention of expandable storage, though it is not demonstrated or shown on the video, nor are any specifics discussed. Our money’s on the speaker mistaking USB Drive Mode for expandable storage. One more video after the break.

Update: EBPMAN in the comments, who is much more fluent en Espan?ol than yours truly, says that the video specifically says micro SD, but when talking about it he's pointing at the instructions on how to remove/insert the SIM card. Confusion continues to reign supreme.

Update 2: Apparently the videos have been pulled. Take our word for it, they speak Spanish and have a Pre.

At about the 1:53 mark he points to the slot next to the sim card and says you can put a memory card there for adding more music and other stuff. It looks like the diagram on the phone shows how to put a card in, so it might be true. It could be showing how to put in the sim though.

If you pause the video, to me it looks like instructions for the SIM card. Look closely at the diagram and you can see the "band" that goes across the bottom third of the card which exactly matches the actual SIM card.

No props for me on the article update? Dang, maybe next time... I do speak spanish as well, wasn't just a wild guess.

The way he was handling the Pre in the first video, I wonder if he has any "Oreo" problems...yet?

Guys. I am fluent in spanish. He says its a memory expansion slot to this version can support a micro sd.

Thanks!

BAH...I want a MicroSD memory slot.

nice but he should pronunce fine el palm pre and its not la palm pre like its a girl!!! .
and have slots for micro sd an for the sim card wow thats nice!
he's saying i dont know how to take a picture jajaj!!

i hope they arrive to Ecuador (south america) .

All I picked up was that yes, Susan was home; she's in the kitchen....

I also speak Spanish and for some reason is saying that next to the SIM slot is a MicroSD slot, and is a revised GSM palm Pre and is going to be in Telcel "soon".

He knows a lot about the device but in the first video he is doubting if the screen is resistive or capacitive, saying finally that is resistive but very responsive and likes it a lot. And we know for a fact that is capacitive, so maybe he doesnt know everything for sure.

But he is overall quite impressed by the device.

There is no micro sd slot. it is directions for the battery and Sim card.

Look at this screen shot.

LOL,I particularly enjoyed the part when they point out not to say 'Webos' too fast.. Implying that it could easily be confused with classic Mexican street vernacular:'Huevos'.

like the screen shot points out .. its just a little diagram showing the battery and sim card.. nothing more..

in first video around 1:50 he clearly shows the microsd slot and he clearly makes reference to it in spanish.
my spanish is perfect :)

if it had a micro sd slot there would be a diagram for it just like the battery and sim card. which it clearly does not.

HAHA.. Huevos.. he has alot of Huevos for saying theres a micro sd slot. :P

So a GSM pre closer to the US eh? Bet ATT customer are more inticed now :)

yup sd slot!

Come on guys, there's NO sd slot in that phone, no matter what that guy's saying...

Part 2 is up...you can actually read the Telcel GSM in the upper right corner quite clearly. Their website also mentions that it should be out in less than a month.

As for part 1, he does say there is a memory card slot, though he doesn't say micro sd specifically.

you are right but actually he says quite clear at 1:52 that the memory slot is for MicroSD, but just he is probably not right about the existence of the memory card slot overall.

You're right. I didn't hear it clearly the first time, but he does say "micro sd for songs".

just because he says it has one doesn't mean he is in the know. Not Until I see him pull the sd out will I believe him.

The spot he points to is the same on the cdma pre.

Hey guys, the little box he's pointing to is a box with copper ends to charge the battery. if you take off your battery you'll see what I mean. I think he's mistaken, because he says that that is the spot for the SD card. My spanish is perfect too, so I know what he's saying.

PAAUULLLLM

You know, if Palm can fit a Sim card, why couldn't they give the CDMA version a MicroSD??????????????

Been there. Discussed that. I agree with you.

It is funny how these videos have now been removed by the user. Atleast that is what it says on the video box when I press play. Hmmmm maybe he was threatened to remove it immediately!!!! haha

I couldn't see the video because it was deleted, but Yey! Finally Palm Pre here in Mexico :D

the palm pre has been in mexico for quite some time...

looks like mr ski mask did a good job in mexico ;D

Noooooo I couldn't see the videooo... I saw the article at work but from there I cannot see videos, then I come home and it's not there any more... no puede seeerr... but at least we will have hopefully soon the palm pre...

He is a Journalist in Mexico City, he had a radio show every day about technology and writes or used to write for a major newspaper.

I would think he knows what he is talking about but who knows, maybe he got confused by the SIM diagram.

I speak spanish and have a pre. I doubt the pre would work in mexico and with telcel heres why. Telcels 3g bands are the same as at&t 3g bands, so telcel would only get the pre if at&t was getting it, the fact tat most of the gsm pres are comming out for europe means the 3g wont work in mexico.

Now if it was true and the pre did come out here it would be quite a joke, telcel is succesful because its a grossly dishonest company ( i mean becaue of their rates and claims) people will buy it and love it, but the service would suck. I will still buy my GF a sprint pre and hack it to work with iusacell.

PS. Telcels latest trick was copying the sprint+pre+4g ads and dubbing over in spanish and using it as if they came up with the idea (you guys know the commercials with all the statistics right?). :( por telcel customers.

ps. I own a cdma pre working perfectly in mexico, GSM is not the only way out.

Sure LOOKS to me like it it is the SIM instructions... (I too took a screen shot of the vid...)
Shame... so close to the USA, yet so far...

(Yep on the repeated instructions to say WEB-OS, slowly...)

@quboid

Telcel this, Telcel that... Say whatever you wanna say about Telcel, but truth is that Telcel owns the biggest 3G network in M
