Tiny glimmer of hope that Skype is coming to webOS 36
Skype is available today for Verizon smartphones - well, for Verizon smartphones based on Android or Verizon BlackBerry Smartphones. Left out of that picture: the Palm Pre Plus and Palm Pixi Plus on webOS. A Verizon tipster has sent us an internal memo detailing the Skype rollout to employees and it does offer a faint glimmer of hope that webOS may someday be included:
Stay tuned for more detail in the near future about Skype Mobile on more Smartphones and platforms such as BREW, WinMo and Palm.
Like we said - it's a faint glimmer - but when it comes to the possibility of Skype on a Pre, we'll take it. Screenshot after the break.

nfirst
Profound, thanks for adding value to this page...
The gold medal for your Online Special Olympics victory has been withdrawn because you cant even spell "first" correctly.
I believe the n prefix was to indicate a numerical variable. The post had one of two possible problems.
Should his intent be to track the number of first posts he has made, the missing "++;" is apparent. In many languages, "nfirst++;" would increment this variable for tracking.
Should he want to tell us how many first posts he has contributed (the "TOOL" rating, as it is call in the industry), he would need to provide a printing mechanism. That is HIGHLY language independent, and thus left as a correction for the reader.
this totally just made my day. I'm not kidding.
I do what I can with what I have.
Well you are very efficient then!
Or excessive drooling has shorted out his Pre keyboard. His vacuous post did not strike me that he had the ilk for math without a caculator.
If the "first" post thing is bad, it's even worse the b.itching about those who do it. If you want to see them go away, don't b.itch about it and they will go away due to lack of attention.
What is worse is that you behave like a 12yr old and seem to be driving a Celica. Please take it back !!
Not just _driving_ a Celica... _racing_ a Celica.
I have been using the IM+ Talk for Skype and it works pretty well for IM. It even works for phone calls but not sure if it uses minutes or not.
That is a question I would like to know also.
Great! Can't wait for it, Skype rocks. :D
Hey, where's the story about this?!

We need your help!
In my opinion skype international connections to mobile phones are to expensive. I'm very happy of having voxofon on my palm pre. I save in worst case 50% when comparing voxofon vs skype (I call Poland from USA, I call a lot to mobile). However it is good news as many people call landlines etc. which is cheap and skype has intuitive user interface.
How funny. I was just browsing the Skype site to nag them about releasing a version for webOS. Nice to see this.
I was just now searching for info on Skype for Android, and surprise! I miss Fitaly on the Palm Treo and this one thing could have me dump my Pre for the Android. With technology like Fitaly already available for the Treo, I'm disappointed in Palm for having simply a keyboard on the Pre.
Don't believe the hype on this. The Skype app for VzW is so crippled. It forces you to use a 3G connection (no option for WiFi). This is only worth it if you know another Skype Mobile user.
So give me a REAL Skype app or nothing at all.
Double Post. Bleh
Skype needs to be original :) Nothing else...Verizonn crippled the application. I like to have my full Skyp experience on webOS...
I hope it is an official Skype app. At the moment I have to use Skype's "Skype To Go Number" which hopefully I won't need any more. I just hope it won't need WiFi to work, else it would be totally pointless...
Palm is SO far behind in this game. Leaving them as soon as the HTC EVO is out!
Good bye, webOS does not need haters posting on their fansite. Also android sucks. I have used every android device except this 4g evo and still cant seem to enjoy it.
Don't feed the trolls buddy...
I hope so. Skype is very useful for when you go abroad
Ok...so I have Skype on my laptop.....It's great because I can see and talk to my friend in Florida.... (I have a webcam above my monitor)
But......What is the advantage of having Skype on a phone like the Pre??? You can't use it as a video conferencing tool because the camera is on the back of the phone.....Stupid question I know....But what am I missing??? Everybody talks about wanting "Skype" as an app...I don't know what I would use it for...
People want Skype so they could (a) make international calls at dirt cheap rates, and (b) be able to voice/text Chat with other Skype users, and (c) avoid cellphone minutes by chatting over EVDO/WiFi.
If you ask, "why would anyone want to voice chat over Skype when they can just call?" or "why would anyone want to text chat when they can just SMS?", you'd need to ask the same question about AIM or Yahoo messenger or Google Chat. There are lots of ways to text/voice. But if your friends/family are particularly using one kind of text/voice program, you want to use that too. I have colleagues at work who use Skype to text chat (work-related discussions). Skype allows "groups" and has history, so no matter where I log in, I can catch-up on all the old discussion. It's like real-time email. Google Chat keeps history, but doesn't support groups. AIM and Yahoo don't keep history (and I don't think they support groups either).
at the risk of sounding old and stupid(im only 41 so guess I'm stupid, lol) I was gonna ask what the hell skype is. You just explaind it perfectly,,thanks.
I think the delay is the WebOS SDK. It doesn't support 3rd party apps using the mic. This is why I think Skype isn't making any promise based on features that aren't even avalible yet. IMO Can't wait though!!!
i'm not telling stories out of school...but,
I've heard that webOS app will be available next, before the brew and win mobile apps.
there are some odd things about the app and the way it works.
@bnceo- it's not that it's crippled it's just weird.
the skype app only works on the vzw network (and not the 3g evdo network, the regualar old 1x voice side). a call from the skype app is carried as a voice call through the network to skype where it is converted to a voip call- it doesn't originate as voip on the data network. this is why you can't make calls over wi-fi or take the phone out of the country and make calls. the story is that it was done this way to increase voice quality- after using the blackberry app today I was a little surprised how well it did work.
as far as a "skype" experience it all seems to be there. your skype to skype calls are unlimited and the international skype rates are way better than regular vzw rates.
the funny picture made my day!
This could get me using Skype, in the same way Tweed got me using Twitter.
I'd be much more interested in Skype if I could transfer an existing number to it. :/
Does anyone know how I can forward incoming Skype calls from my PC to ring on my Pre (even if they come in as minute usage for me)? I want to provide a way for my friends in Peru to use Skype to reach me for free when I'm away from home, preferably in a way that's free for me too (i.e. counted as minutes/data on my unlimited minute/data plans, and not as a subscription to some third-party software).
Skype has a Call Forwarding feature that forwards your incoming Skype calls--both regular Skype calls, as well as calls to your online number (if you have one)--to any phone number of your choice. You don't even have to leave Skype signed in on your computer if you don't want to, although if you do have it open, you can set it to try your computer first, and then redirect to your forwarding number after a number of seconds if you don't answer there (you can choose how long). The cost of the call to whatever number you're forwarding to is the same as if you dialed that number yourself manually from Skype. If you have a Skype subscription that includes unlimited calls to the area that the number you're forwarding to is in, then the calls forwarded to that number will be unlimited too (in other words, free if you already have a paid unlimited subscription). The only cost per call/minute you'd have, if any, is whatever you'd normally pay to answer any other call on the phone you're forwarding calls to (for example, you might use minutes on your cell phone plan). If your friends in Peru are calling you directly from Skype on their computers, all they have to do is call your Skype name and it's free for them too--it doesn't matter on their end that you're forwarding calls to another number; it's just a Skype to Skype call for them. Although, I believe the Skype client tells them that the call is being forwarded to another number.
You can enable call forwarding in the options menu in the Skype client itself, or by logging into your account on skype.com. To forward calls to your Pre, simply tell Skype to forward your incoming calls to your cell phone number. Enter it in the standard international format, for example: +18165551212
I have an unlimited US and Canada subscription, as well as a Skype online number in Campinas, Brazil. I have Skype set up to forward my incoming calls to my US cell phone number. My friend in Brazil can either call me directly from Skype on her computer, or call my online number from any phone, and either way my cell phone rings just like any other call and I can answer it and talk. Since calls to my cell phone are included, unlimited, in my Skype subscription, I just see a whole bunch of calls to my cell phone number for $0.00 in my Skype call history.
Sorry for the late/long reply. Hope it helps.
anyone knows if this is any good? I tried to download the trial version but just couldn't... it is supposed to be a "substitute" for skype for webos
