TouchPad, Pre 3, and Veer get late night hands-on 74

by Dieter Bohn Thu, 24 Feb 2011 10:55 am EST

Engadget's Joshua Topolsky made another appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon last night, where he was able to give the briefest of demos of the upcoming Pre 3, Veer, and TouchPad. Tap-to-Share got a spotlight and the Veer had its first of many, many "Awwwwwww!" moments.

Good stuff all around - catch the video after the break!

Nice to see they were interested in the WebOS stuff. Seemed like they spent a little more time on that. But "baby phone" not a real nice joke about the Veer. Still any air time is good time.

I was slightly disappointed in the brief time that he spent on the devices. I understand he had a limited time frame but maybe they should have given him a long segment to speak about each device.

But I was excited to see that they showed the Tap to Share feature.

unreal. people find something to bitch about on everything. This was great visibility. It's Jimmy Fallon for God's sake and a 3+ minute segment on new technology.

Wow I make a slight comment about slightly disappointed and you think i'm bitching? Yes 3 mins on 5 devices = about 45 sec's each. I was hoping to see more like when he did the Pre.

You guys need to be a little less touchy

It is a comedy show, not a tech review show, so 3 mins out of a 45 min show is pretty. I think this is good, just focus on a few great features. And Jimmy's audiences are younger, so a good fit for showing gadgets. I am happy it is HP stuff.

I do agree with you about that and I'm actually happy that they showed to tap to share feature as that is one of the things I'm excited about.

Yes it's a comedy show but the Host touts (imo) that he is a tech geek. So I was hoping to see larger segments towards tech. I'm not a follower of Fallon as he is on late at night

And you sir need to stop being such a major payne! Oh wait, that won't do... ;)

It's a not a show about palm devices, quiting being a major PAIN!

At the same time, he had over 8 minutes of time just for the OG Pre when he was on the show in March of 2009.

There it is... There is a good judgment of whether America will go for the Veer or not. If Jimmy Fallon likes it, America will like it.... He has the American mentality doesn't he?

It really is a very nice phone...only reason I would go for the 3 over the Veer is the Veer's lack of camera flash...
but how do yoy like the comparison between Touch-to-share versus Motorola's plug in to share over that laptop thing?

Question:

Can the Atrix Dock work by itself? I don't think it can, and that would be a huge detraction for me since I sometimes need to have two devices powered on and doing separate things.

I think touch to share can work really well, and would actually make me want to buy both devices if it makes for a seamless environment.

nnb

They did specify in the video that the Atrix Dock was a "Dead" device. I can only assume by what they said it is useless without a android phone.

It can't--the dock literally doesn't have a processor; the Phone is the machine. The dock is just a keyboard, mouse, and larger screen.

From reviews I've heard, the Atrix linux desktop is far from all that polished--it's a window showing your phone screen so you can run google apps in that, and a firefox browser. Why not chrome? Nobody knows, but apparently the firefox they've shipped is kind of a bear, too.

What I liked was that Fallon seemed more interested in the Veer than anything else and that he plugged WebOS. He also made mention of the Pre2 if I heard correctly. So whether he's a WebOS fan or whether HP paid for the spot, that's good exposure to a younger demographic. Any air time is good at this point. Get people talking. I saw twitter light up with posts about the time this aired and that's good too.

Maybe he was only allowed to play with the Veer and to lift the Pre3. He did not so much as touch the TPad except to tap on the browser. I bet HP TouchPadBody guards were there ready to jump over him if he were to touch the TouchPad again.

Fallon's a tech geek and from what I can tell a non-fan boy. Meaning he's interested and and impressed by ANY cool new technology, not just tech from Apple, Google, HP/Palm, etc.

And I'm not surprised he's more taken with the Veer. It's different. If everyone pulled their phones out and put them on a table, the Veer will automatically catch most people's eyes. "WTF? Whose tiny phone is this? Can I play with it? Is this thing for real? Whoa, you can play 3D games on it? Wtf!"

It'd catch my eye if someone pulled out a touch screen smart phone half the size of the phones I normally see.

Well put. Seeing it in this video I'm almost tempted to get the Veer over a Pre 2 or 3. The thing really is just that ridiculous.

It's a lot of phone but at the same time it's not! :-)

My main unanswered question is whether or not the Touchpad will have the ability to tether to a Pre3, thus making the cellular component in the pad redundant.

if they have free tether for 2.x then you should be all set. No need to get a 3g/4g touchpad, you will never be anywhere with your touchpad and not have your phone

You should be able to use the Mobile HotSpot of the Pre3 (If VZW) to tether it.

All Pre's have the mobile hotspot capability and there is an official app for it, but it seems to be available only if the carrier allows it. I think there is free Homebrew app in development, and there is another one for sale through the internet channel.

Little reason why the Veer and Pre3 will not be the same, unless HP actually wants to disable the functionality.

guys, you forgot again about the you tube link, palm users here!

HP stuff starts at about the 1:40 mark.

Good job HP getting that into Engadget's hands for the segment. Short sweet and TTS got the finale and the biggest crowd response. Smartest marketing move I have seen from a WebOS device yet. Beats the ripped up Lou Reed song. They need to do this on more shows, including morning ones.

edit- Oh, and the more I see the Veer, the more it catches my eye. I think HP is on to something. In a world where everything is getting bigger....small does stand out. Kind of like when the Nano launched.

my personal opinion is that hp has a killer product, but as android keeps the #1 spot for apps and accessibility, everything else is going to be looked @ as being 2nd class. Hp needs to introduce this stuff with a brand new way of looking at apps, and phones. Ppl love new things, not the same ol things in a different package. I know what webos can d and am going to buy it all as soon as it comes out, but to most non webos usuers, it's not that simple.

Plug To Share is Hot For Now But Touch To Share Is Were It's Going.

kinda(but not really)wish they would've started w/ the HP stuff, to explain more of it...but the WOW factor at the end makes you forget everything else before it so yea that works...just wish he had a few seconds more at the end there...

Who are you people that say i wish he had more time for this and more time for that? I'd be willing to bet you and the people nearest to you are rarely ever happy....The spot was perfect! They didn't neeed more time to flaunt a product that won't be on the market for another 3 or 4 months. They just needed to plant a seed... and they did that!

bingo

"hey this is HP. this is touch to share. that's all you get...for now"

crowd shocked and amazed

what do you mean "you people"...lol

by asking for a few more seconds, for an ending that clearly seemed rush, i dont think is wishing too much...they probably set and alotted time that he had to do his thing in and he probably rehearsed just that in the time frame without the jokes and small talk involved.

He even made a statement in the beginning about them "cutting into his time"...and extra 5-10 seconds at the end there wouldnt have seem so rushed, thats all im referring too.

wasnt expecting or wanting a full 3+ mins on HP/webOS.

"What do YOU mean, 'you people?" .. O_o .. "HUH?!" Lol

Man I love saying you people to people.

Great segment. Though they were talking about how cute the Veer was & like it was a little kid phone, then they showed the 3D gaming & everyone seemed to realize--hey, wait a minute, this phone is for real. Also, Fallon & the crowd seemed to love the touch to share. I don't think I would have done the segment w/a Liza Minelli website, but it got their attention.

I watched the segment live and I have to say I was impressed even though it was super short. Here's why.

1. HP gear was up next to the latest from Android\Moto.

2. Josh showed how the Atrix integrates with the dock accessory, Josh showed how the P3 and TP integrate.

3. HE SHOWED THE VEER WITH NFSU RUNNING ON IT!!! Not one commercial or mainstream spot has EVER shown webOS running GAMES!! This was HUGE IMO.

4. The TP looked like a beast next to the "smaller" Xoom (due to aspect ratios)

5. The crowd seemed impressed with the TTS function. And...It was displayed to the general public BEFORE Android and their NFC\BT "rip" from HP.

Short exposure but very impressive. WebOS totally outshone Android in this segment, in my opinion.

I agree. I think one of the best features is docking your Pre3 and taking text and calls on your Touch Pad. MUCH better then the Xoom "lap top phone docking thing". I think HP needs to push the hell out of that feature. Touch to share is great and I'll use it a lot, however I think America will love the text/phone call linking option the best.

Actually, the laptop-phone-dock was the Atrix, not the Xoom. the Xoom is just a tablet with a rear & forward camera. That is literally all they said about it.

The Atrix phone dock looks like a great way to get your phone stolen while in a coffee shop.

It can't get stolen, because your screen would go blank when its released. Giving you ample amount of time to sock the thief in the face, while drinking your frap at the same time.

I actually thought (visually) the Atrix's docking to a monitor/keyboard and the Xoom showing front and rear-facing cameras garnered more wows from the audience than the webOS demo. It would have been nice if Josh showed the TouchPad docked on its Touchpad and the Bluetooth keyboard in use.

it wasn't a "omg" cheer, it was because the audience was then seen on tv. at the end of the day, no ones going to say "OMG DID U SEE THE XOOM.. IT HAS A CAMERA..."

Well, with those aww's you can bet it's out of the question for men now. Hopefully the awww's translate into Veer sales for women.

Nah, dudes have pockets and can have a small phone. The pixi's problem wasnt that it was small, it was that it was called a pixi.

It should be called Pat(d) to share:)

That was excellent exposure, especially with webOS being the strong finish and getting the Technology song :)

Man, the Veer really grows on you. It's like the roadster to the Pre3's limo.

blackberry phones are super popular and most of them don't have a screen bigger than the veer. the veer is a very capable phone, and there is definitely a market for it.

First time I've seen a Touchpad (or the new phones) demoed by an non-HP employee. Wonder how long Engadget gets to hold onto the devices?

Topolsky and a few of the other Engadget folks are WebOS fans. They don't go dedicate tons of time to it because they are generalists, but they still dig it. I think Topolsky did the original Pre with Fallon too.

WebOS still doesn't have any apps, though.

HP will kickstart the chicken or the egg.. one of the two.

So, you're saying I should ask for a refund of the hundred-odd bucks I've spent in the app store? Because according to you those downloads I paid for are phantoms.

Did anyone noticed both the TouchStones that the Veer and Pre 3 were sitting on are the old Palm Touchstone?

I love how Engadget's article about last night really shows support for HP's new stuff. They could have worded that any way they wanted too, but the way it came out mentioning it the way they did shows that Engadget is with them.

Hi all,

very cool...take care, Jay

woooooouuu.... this is the palm pre veer and palm pre 3.....♣♥♥♥♥♥♥Palm!!!!(hP/Palm)

Great use of the phones. I can't wait to see the homebrew community get a hold of the TTS feature. HP did a great job of giving them extra ammo with servers and not shunning them away like some companies would do.

This was EXACTLY the type of publicity that HP needs. The 'baby phone' comment should be expected and Josh did an excellent job of countering that, while the phone is small, it has some power!

The Pre3/Touchpad demo, was cool, as well, but the Veer was really the star.

All around, massive coolness!

That is amazing publicity showing the HP products next to the latest hottness from Android and overshadowing. I think HP just stole the show with this. The thing that I fear is that I think ipad 2 and iphone 5 are going to have a similar feature. But I would say there is nothing to complain about this publicity some people might want a baby phone it has that cute factor.

Is there an HP logo in the desktop, once the Atrix is connected to the cradle????

It is all about attention span... Of which his audience has next to none. Wow them in 3 minutes or bore them in 4. Apple does a high speed 30sec commercial that shows nothing but flash and none of the sometimes tedious flows to get there and people wet their pants on the way to the store with cash in hand.
The spot was fine and got people looking at HP and WebOS in 3 minutes... How much good did that 8 minutes do 2 years ago??
For a change, how about saying "nice job stacking your products up against the competition"?

Thought this turned out well (like many of you). Fallon was surprised by the Veer in a good way (grabbed it). That was cool. The Pre 3 communicating with the TouchPad impressed. All in all it was great. And the joke about the little phone for little people was funny. I don't feel like they dissed the Veer at all. It is apparently so small it evokes a reaction every time someone sees it for the first time. Watch the Veer turn into a surprise hit.

Well that is it! The first non-TechHead reaction to the HP Veer is, "Wow! I really like that! Let me see it." HP Veer just got a level up!! *Insert Mushroom*

I'm not sure who, but someone, other then Josh, made note that the Veer, TouchPad, and Pre3 ran WebOS. So it wasn't that foreign to someone on staff. And it was a great Demo of the Veers non intrusive size, and the TouchPads Interdevice interaction. More non-commercial, Primetime spots showing key WebOS features should be done like this. Anther Primetime spot should show Pre3 To TouchPad Video chat, TouchPad to TouchPad Video Chat, or Pre3 to Pre3 Video chat. Another showing the Calendar with Synergy, and so on. Put them up against the other platforms, showing how WebOS is on top.

As well as "ASASEABAN" I noticed the Touchstones with the Palm Brand.HP showed us the "HP" Logo in the touchstone, Why?? I don't know, but let me thinking there are more surprises coming soon...

About the Video.

1.-They already convinced me to acquire the TP, though the matter of the gesture area.

2.-They showed just a tiny part of the WebOs features, true multitasking anybody mentioned??

3.-TP touchstone missed, terrible mistake, or is still in the production line??

HP pls do the marketing about WebOS starting tomorrow, don´t miss a minute, even with my Pre(-) I feel like an alien in comparison with other user´s phones, there´s a huge difference, do I have to tell you that?? I hope not.

Long Live to WebOs and Palm Brand!!
Greetings to all Palm Users.

Please just release the Touchpad I need it!

I'm going to check out the Veer, it may be all I need in a phone. I'm more concerned about the keypad than the screen.

Now lets see if HP give Dr. Brennan (from Bones) a TouchPad and a Pre 3... I have already seen her with a Pre and a Pre Plus.

And upgrade Beckett's phone on Castle. She, I believe, is still using the original Pre.

I've been really pessimistic about HP and their handling of webos2, but stuff like this gives me hope. I know this was engadget and not an HP ad, but I think HP got good exposure with this. Yea, it was short but in the whole clip they showed or talked about:
1) an atrix doc... didn't show it doing anything, but did talk up the sexting possibilities.
2) the Xoom which has a front and rear camera..oooh, ahhh.
3) The Veer, which is small but shown running NFS among other apps (granted, it probably takes a webos veteran to notice the cards and multitasking going on).
3a) the pre3 which is bigger and more powerful than the pre/pre2
3b) the touchpad with front and rear cameras
3c) tap to share which seemed to impress... and it ended the segment on a high note and in my opinion overshadowed items 1 and 2 above.

HP is building the hype early spring release maybe let keep our fingers crossed.
