Twynergy app birthed from HP Labs, dives into what makes Twitter users tick, disappears into the night 23

It was only in the Palm Beta App feed for a short time, but there’s a new entry from HP in the app game: HP Twynergy. Though since pulled, the app was born from formulations created by HP Labs, from which they analyze a Twitter user’s posts for content and spit out a list of what it is that user talks about. You can then compare that user to another, getting a “similarity rating” that, well, rates how similar the two users are.

For instance, Twynergy found the author of this post (@dkdsgn) to be just 33% similar to SPE Editor-in-Chief Dieter Bohn (@backlon), who was found to be 94% similar to the PreCentral Twitter account (@precentral). As you can see - the app isn't the most useful but you can lose yourself in looking up comparison ratings for a spell.

Not only can the comparisons be made, you can also look at a user’s “persona,” i.e. what it is they talk about. Twynergy spits out a cloud (or list) of broad topics, into which you can delve further to find posts of that topic. Take PreCentral tips meister Adam Marks (@audemars02), whose tweets are dominated by Computers, a category in which he primarily discusses Systems, in particular webOS, the Palm Pre, and application stores.

So Twynergy is a quick and fun little app. Not just in that you can compare users and find out just how dissimilar (or similar) your interests are from people you know, but more so that even groups like HP Labs within the giant that is Hewlett-Packard are making proof-of-concept apps for webOS, possibly even from that approaching-unicorn-status internal app development competition held by HP. We're looking forward to seeing more.

How much time does the average tweeter spend tweeting in a day? I've never used it.

It all depends on the user.

me neither.. i've used it but i still just don't get it.. honestly couldn't explain to someone what exactly twitter is for..

Gee, that's great guys. You've gone from yesterday's article about how to dispose of your Pre and Pixi, to reviewing an app that's been pulled from the app catalog and is no longer available. What's next--are you going to start re-reviewing previous versions of webos?

First: It was in the Beta feed, not the App Catalog.

Second: This suggests that it's an app coming down the pipe, and will likely be available at some point.

I don't know what your problem is, but you're quite cynical.

Until we get word of new devices coming sometime other than "in the coming months," it's going to be hard to be anything other than cynical about the future of webOS phones.

... so... why would I need this?

"can compare users and find out just how dissimilar (or similar) your interests are from people you know"

Can use it to find people on twitter with similar interests.

... and why would I want to do that?

... and why do you want to be on the Internet?

i guess if all of the internet is now twitter then you're right, i don't want to be on it.

I'm honestly not trollin here, I just don't grasp the whole concept of twitter at a very basic level.. I don't get what it's for & no one seems to be able to explain it in a way that makes it sound like it has a real purpose.. & this app in particular is even weirder to me; why would I want to find a bunch of people I don't know on twitter? even if they have similar interests.. so what? If I really wanted to share ideas or something I'd go on forums.. I dunno, I must just be missing something..

does not matter why you need this... Because
YOU CAN't GET IT!
LOL...:)

Neat.

twitter is a commercialized, coperate run, IRC.

it's been pretty slow here, but it reminds me of the time before the pre 2 announcement. Is there something going down (webos 2.xx)? We can only hope. Plus, everyone has sand in their crotch anyway with any news, good or bad. Or it's just a holiday week and my fav palm site is taking a well deserved break.

So the question is will next week be better? Is it true that HP/Palm will not have any news during CES?

Have you seen in the App Catalog an application called 'The Best Vacuum Cleaners' by AppBookShop? So in light of this, ANY application - even an unreleased one - has to be better than researching vacuum cleaners. However, I did not purchase it, it might be awesome.

hey has anyone seen that MeeGo(nokia new platform)? I saw some pics and they copied webos just like blackberry did! I has a similar card metaphor. If u want to see it go to: meego.com and look at their pictures!

hate to say it.. but yer rite.. jockin' webos' steeves seems to be the new thing in mobile os'.. imitation blah blah blah, but not when no one knows what's being imitated..

Hopefully the beginning of the HP engineered apps. I think HP VP said there were 15,000 + HP engineers. If only 10% write apps then that's 1500 apps. I listened to the HP CTO webcast from the NY November meeting and how he needed a full time person just to keep track of HP internal submissions. I don't know what HP's waiting for then! Wonder if Precentral's editors are quiet because of no news (likely) or maybe they're enjoying a PalmPad right now. (or they're snowed in on the east coast like me)

Maybe all the apps require webOS 2.0? Except the 100 free songs apps.

1/2 yr and no apps from hp. blows

Kinda wack to me, hopefully just something to get the creator familiar with the tools.
