Veer, Pre 3, and TouchPad pop up for UK reseller pre-orders, exorbitant placeholder prices included 48

If you’re interested in getting the smallest smartphone ever, then the HP Veer might be the phone for you. There’s just one catch: we have no pricing, release date (apart from the approaching “late spring”), or carrier deals. Never fear, for excitable British resellers will jot your name down on a list for a Veer pre-order, though hopefully at the prices they’re asking they won’t be charging your card until we’re much closer to release.

The Veer has appeared on two UK websites for pre-order. An unlocked version of the diminutive handset can be pre-orderd through KingOfGadgets.co.uk for a not so diminutive £499 (that’s US$808 (!)), or from SuperETrader.co.uk for a little-less-shocking-but-still-painful £399 (US$646). If you're in the market for an HP Pre 3 or TouchPad, KingOfGadgets will take your name for those as well, to the tune of £499 for the Pre 3 and £699 (US$1131 (!!)) for the TouchPad.

Regardless, we're going to say that these prices are all merely placeholders and not neccesarily final pricing (especially for the TouchPad). These are just waiting list listings for while we wonder what exactly HP is going to charge for the little Veer, bigger Pre 3, and big TouchPad. And, you know, when they'll finally hit the market.

Why would you pre-order if you have no idea what it is going to cost? Am I missing something? I hope more news starts coming out of HP for the US; I'm ready for a Pre3.

getting closer...

Release veer at least now. and make CDMA version of it too.

Ouch! the price... hope it is not right at all! because the price too crazy for me..

I bet HP will price the touchpad equal with iPad.. because it made to direct competition with iPad.. or now iPad 2. HP won't be that stupid to priced the Touchpad such expensive.. None people will buy even they are WebOS lover.

Yep, this webOS lover won't drop $1000 on a webOS tablet, or any tablet for that matter. Might as well get a very nice laptop for that price.

Why would you pre-order if you have no idea what network it's going to come out on?

I swear HP is becoming more and more cocky. First they have a separate Feb 9th news release. Then then annouce/display products that are going to "dazzle" us. Then not even tell us how much, which carriers, and release date. Then they start pre-orders still with still no information and expect us to jump on it! At least Apple will normally give prices and final release dates when they do annouce new upcoming products. HP what are you doing?!?!?!

I wouldn't trash talk HP over this. Obviously these sites (which are the one's stating these ridiculous prices, not HP) are asking more than what the thing will cost so as to ensure the customer will have enough to pay for the thing when the pricing details are actually announced. Better than asking for less. At least I hope this will be the case because I agree with the lot of you and would rather get a nice laptop for 1100 bucks.

This is being communicated pretty far in advance even for a pre-order, given that the TouchPad and Pre3 are not slated to be available until the Summer.

Is there any chance HP communicated a conservative timeline for the public but they have much more aggressive goals internally? You know, underpromise, overdeliver.

Maybe they mixed up '£' with '$'

Mostly I've noticed...and seen UK consumers ccomplain too, is that the dollar price figure is the same as the pound price figure...in other words...what's 499 dollars in the US...is 499 pounds in the UK...
so perhaps we are seeing what the units will cost in America...

Jmaestro1 --nowhere does this article mention HP starting preorders on these devices.

This article is about some random shady UK web sites doing so.

I see that now. Not really an "official" pre-order.

will it be available in Canada without having to go with Rogers or buy on Ebay? :/
I'm with Bell BTW

I'm sure the wifi-only Touchpad will be available. Not sure on the other phones though.

Seems reasonable... if you are retarded.

KingOfGadgets is also taking pre orders for RIM's Paybook for £699. Nice business model: start taking pre-orders for unreleased products at a price higher than the expected final price...

yes please release the Pre3 on Bell Canada please!! Don't want to go on Rogers and all the original Pre users are on Bell

UK, are you kidding me!!! Hello McFly, ummm, anyone home? Is this a new trend? Let's release US product in the UK first. Screw our customers here in the states, oh wait, we need them too... sooo we'll release in the US… eventually.

WTF

its a much smaller market. way easier to release in

I don't remember them saying it was going to be a US-only product anyway...

I have an upgrade in april on bell. I will wait for pre3, but even after it comes out I will wait a few months cause the price will prbably drop like a rock, similar to pre-.

400-700 GBP looks about right to me. Usually the conversion for tech gadgets is 1 USD = 1 GBP = 1 EUR, so you're looking at 400-700 USD here.

Oh yeah, and welcome to Europe. It's like that for every single electronic device coming from the US! The MacBook Pro costs 1199 USD in the US and 1149 EUR in Europe.

To UK guys that sites look to me like the Alibaba site who just placed pre-orders prices to get your money but your will never see it or any device at your place. Take care.

I'll wait til it comes out O2 and get free contract:P

Good to see the **** Americans feeling jipped, a)this is preorder for resellers b) it means the hardware is close to be launched world wide c)you Americans always got things first.

You brits can have it first. Nobody wants this junk anyways.

Funny, I was having a strangely similar response to your comment.

then move to american and stop crying about it ;)

I just have one question:

Will it blend?

Did anyone else notice that the "Expected released date" is "Q1 2011" for the TouchPad??

That gives me even more reason not to trust what they have to say. They charge an outrageous price to preorder, then tell you it's expected this month.

I have been told by O2 Ireland, that they will NOT be stocking any HP/palm devices (phone or touchpad) for the foreseeable future

:(

I'll take 3 for $1131 (note the word for not at)
That works out to $377/each. That will work ;-)

I really hope this pricing is not accurate, otherwise I will sadly be giving my money to android or apple instead.

If is true, is a failed...

Best Regards... B)

HP's TouchPad Rushed for March Release, Report Claims

http://www.pcworld.com/article/220270/hps_touchpad_rushed_for_march_rele...

absurdity, they really have gone off the Charile Sheen end of life, except these guys are LOSERS. iphones don't even cost that much. Somebody PLEASE take rubinstein out to "pasture", for good.

It must really suck to work at Hpalm now, looking at how pissed the community is, producing sub-par hardware (at the minimum, barely par), the movement & buzz towards Android and the excitement of working for apple and their products.

At least they have a partner in the dark, crying corner with, windows mobile 7.

These devices will fail like the Pre 2 did.

pre 2 "launch" was to get rid fo the old, possibly to get some monies out of a lost design phase.

If something is 699 euros in Europe, it means it will be 699 US$ in US... That´s the way it usually works, except for cars, where it gets even worst... If a BMW is 40.000 euros in Europe, it will probably be 35.000 US$ in America (and the car is european)

Luckily for me, I travel quite often to the US, and I will be buying my TP there... Wish I could bring a BMW along

Edit: Still, I think 699 US$ for the TP is a bit too much... They should go for $499 (32Gb Wifi) and $599 (32 Gb Wifi+3G)

It's called taxes: socialized health care & social safety nets.
Get them TP and BMW's now, socialization is coming to the Socialist States of America!

I do hope the that this is just a scam to get a feel for the market on pricing. But who really cares, with a so many Android devices coming out by that time, these are just going to get lost in the wild.

Veer is to be released EARLY Spring, not LATE Spring.

I hope no one buys that stupid veer BS! They should change Veer to something like the Iphone without the sliding bs! So people could have the option to pick keyboard or no keyboard! Simple idea for them morons over at Hpalm!

Sorry to ask such an uninformed question but:
If Sprint,my carrier, does not carry the TouchPad, but I buy one for my wife to play solitaire on in our living room, will she be able to email the grandkids? be able to do any internet stuff?
I'm putting aside a bit of money to buy her the TouchPad for her birthday, but if no connectivity, maybe I should search eBay for an old game-boy.

I would think it would depend on whether you have a wireless network in your home. If you do, I believe the Touchpad has WIFI. Then again, they may pull the same stunt that was pulled with XOOM. WIFI can only be unblocked with the purchase at least a months worth of data.

HP, Please dont make it too expensive make it cheaper so you can invest in the future of WebOS

Non WebOS Knowers/fans will buy an iPad if the touchpad is too expensive. Because theres a Apple logo on it.

Just wait a month or two and the Latepad will rapidly drop in price like any other Palm/hp device.

As mentioned these are from 3rd party and not actual carriers. Plus, they have the wonderful VAT included which jacks the price around 25%!

I hope they're just kidding. No one will buy this for 600 - 900 Euros. Until Palm is going to release them in Europe Honeycomb Tablets have become much cheaper than the i **** 2.

So Palm please think about what you're doing or you'll loose another costumer. I mean the pré and the pre 2 aren't bad phones at all and WebOS definetly is the best OS on the market, but Android is getting better and better, Blackberry comes out with a device combining Android Apps and the Blacberry OS. Apple creats a new hype every time they invent another "revolution" (for example a camera).

I think 399 Euros for the wifi-only/ 16GB version and 499 for the 3g/16GB would be great.
