Verizon announces LTE plans: 38 metro markets by the end of 2010 33
We’re listening in on Verizon’s presentation at CTIA and they just announced their plans for their LTE roll-out. Unlike Sprint and Clearwire, who have been flipping on their 4G WiMax network one city at a time, Verizon plans to flip the switch to bring their 4G LTE network online in thirty-eight metro markets by the end of 2010 (the black dots above - red is 3G coverage). Verizon also plans to have sixty-two airports blanketed in LTE by the same time. Verizon’s network is designed to handle 5-7Mbps downlink speeds, with an impressive 2-5Mbps uploads. Of course, it remains to be seen whether or not those speeds will be possible in real world use.
Verizon isn’t announcing any devices right now, they’re saving that for CES at the start of January 2011. Apparently both smartphones and tablets will figure into their announcements then, and you can bet that we’ll be listening in with serious intent then. Verizon’s press release on the matter, with a full list of 2010’s LTE cities and airports, is after the break.

Verizon Launches 4G LTE In 38 Major Metropolitan Areas By The End Of The Year
BASKING RIDGE, NJ, and SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Verizon underscored its rapid deployment of the world’s first large-scale 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network today from the CTIA Enterprise & Applications™ 2010 conference. Lowell McAdam, president and chief operating officer of Verizon, detailed the company’s major network launch in 38 major metropolitan areas, covering more than 110 million Americans, by the end of the year. In addition, the company is launching 4G LTE in more than 60 commercial airports coast to coast – both the airports within the launch areas plus airports in other key cities.
McAdam said, “We are driven by the vision to provide ubiquitous wireless broadband connectivity and mobility to rural and urban Americans alike. With our initial 4G LTE launch, we will immediately reach more than one-third of all Americans where they live, right from the start. And, we will quickly introduce 4G LTE throughout the Verizon coverage area.”
McAdam highlighted the metropolitan areas for the initial launch, which include:
- Large sections of the Northeast Corridor, including Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. as well as Rochester, New York
- Throughout Miami and south Florida, Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, and New Orleans as well as Charlotte, North Carolina and Nashville, Tennessee
- Chicagoland, St. Louis, the Twin Cities, Pittsburgh and major cities in Ohio
- Major population centers in California as well as Seattle, Phoenix, Denver and Las Vegas
(A list of all metropolitan areas and airports is located at the end of the news release.)
Verizon Wireless is building its 4G LTE network with the same commitment to performance and reliability for which it has long been recognized. Verizon Wireless’ laser focus on reliability is based on rigid engineering standards and a disciplined deployment approach year after year.
Enterprise users, businesses and individuals can immediately benefit from Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network this year. While Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network promises much more than speed, the first application gives employees the ability to work at significantly faster speeds and improved latency, increasing productivity and the opportunity to get work done where their business takes them.
McAdam continued, “Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network will also be available in the commercial airports in the 38 metropolitan areas, plus we’re launching airports in other key cities coast to coast, giving road warriors added coverage when they travel. Every time we’ve built a next generation network, our customers have seen real benefits to their bottom lines. Taking advantage of the first large-scale LTE network on the globe gives our customers a competitive advantage.”
Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE rollout positions the company to be the global leader in 4G LTE deployment. Verizon Wireless expects 4G LTE average data rates to be 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink in real-world, loaded network environments. These speeds are significantly faster than Verizon Wireless and other wireless providers’ current or promised 3G network speeds.
By leveraging its 700 MHz spectrum for LTE deployment in the United States, Verizon Wireless is capable of quickly deploying a high-quality wireless broadband network with excellent coverage. The company is currently installing LTE equipment at existing cell sites and switching centers around the United States as part of its extensive, ongoing investment in its voice and data network infrastructure.
In addition to the 38 major metropolitan areas, Verizon Wireless is launching its 4G LTE network in West Lafayette, Ind., home of Purdue University. The public university is using several innovative software applications on Verizon Wireless’ 3G network that improve student engagement and success, and Verizon Wireless is working with Purdue to explore the next phase of how 4G LTE technology can improve e-learning across the nation.

Why in the world flip on 38 markets with no devices that will actually be running on it?? BTW not on Verizon but WOOT for Columbus Ohio!
Come on Sprint Step it up!! >:(
Yeah bout time they show the buckeye state some love, but WiMax is coming to Cleveland in November so I don't really need Verizon for my 4g fix lol
There is a pretty significant difference between the 4mbps speeds you see with WiMax and the 7mbps you will see with Verizon or AT&T 4G service offerings.
The current Sprint WiMax(pseudo-4G) isn't really 4G since AT&T 3G can already hit those speeds, with speeds going to 7.2mbps with HSPA+.
You obviously dont know what your talking about! I've hit over 7.2 on my Epic 4g! I also dont have a cap on how much data I can use and still pay about 50$ cheaper than my plan would cost on big red! 9.7mbs is more than fast enough for a mobile device running a 1ghz proccessor! Sprint>verizon
I hit on my Evo in 4G area 6.7mbps on speedtest, I have my son inlaw brother has the droid X in the same area can`t get half this speed, and we are both in chicago area,I had both T-mobile and AT&T before with Sprint I did dropped them and I stayed with Sprint,Better service and cheaper rate over all, and it`s truth UNLIMITED FOR EVERYTHING UNLIKE THE OTHERS.
No smartphones is not the same as no devices. Verizon will probably have some USB LTE adapters for laptops ready to go right away. Sprint launched 4G without any phones, too.
Cable news announced today that Verizon is introducing the iPhone at the first of 2011. That makes complete sense for Verizon to flip the switch so fast. This allows them to accommodate an iPhone that runs on 4G. Why couldn't it have been you Sprint. Sometimes I think you just don't try hard enough. If this is all true then I will be waiting until January and switching to Verizon to get the iPhone. Then when my contract is up with Verizon, hopefully that will have given HPalm enough time to release a SUPER PHONE unlike anything we have seen before. I don't want to get stuck in a contract with a HPalm device that is just trying to keep up with the competition. I want an HPalm device that LEADS the competition. I still love webOS but I think HPalm needs time to sweep their dirt in a pile before they are ready to scoop it up.
I may not be on Verizon but if they release a portable hotspot device that runs off the 4G, count me in! I live in West Palm and to see them releasing there pleases me greatly, as Sprint doesn't even have us on the radar, closest will be Miami...
chief operating officer for Verizon Communicaitons, Lowell McAdam, said...
"Come see us at CES in January and we'll show you half a dozen smartphones and tablets from top OEMs that will be available on LTE the first half of the year."

New Smartphones and PalmPad expected announcement is early 2011, maybe at CES as 4G devices??
Along with the LTE, Verizon has announced that it will be carrying the iPhone in early 2011. HPalm needs to get its new equipment out before that storm hits Verizon. Unless, as some here have speculated, Verizon will discontinue Palm phones beginning with the Plus later this month and the Pixie next year.
A new iPhone was not announced by Verizon or Apple. It was reported to be in production by reputable NYT people, but it was not announced. I repeat: A. Verizon. iPhone. Was. Not. Announced.
Thanks for saving me the trouble, Donkey Kong.
And by NYT people, you really meant WSJ people...
No Michigan LTE or Wimax. :(
Wait. Rochester, NY but not Buffalo, NY?
That's what I was thinking. Poor Bills and Packers and Colts and Chiefs and Lions. Well, not so much the Colts. (Who Dat?)
Any rumor what AT&T will join the LTE crowd?
I got to hand it to VZN, a MUCH broader 4G launch than Sprint/Clear. Must be nice to have that many gigabucks.
AT&T will be deploying their LTE network starting in the first half of 2011, but it is unknown when or what cities will see that coverage. It may be that AT&T will wait for the iPhone 4G release in June to be the flagship for the AT&T 4G service. Either that, or AT&T will finally stop blowing Steve Jobs and notice that there ARE other devices on the market besides the iPhone.
maybe palm/hp will announce their new 4g phone during the 2011 ces show.
hopefully they annouce a WIMAX and a LTE Version!
Yeah...It would be stupid of Palm to release only LTE version.
Their largest user base is Sprint.
Wimax is dead. No new launch dates, clearly Wimax has been given a DNR order.
If they didn't that would be a huge FAIL. But such an announcement would be the type to breathe new life into Palm. If they just announce without some other fanfare, it would be just lost in the weeds. Apple has the free media coverage benefit, but Palm/HP needs a huge bang to get anyone to even notice. Paired 4G phones and tablets running enterprise-level software (WebOS 2.0) would turn a lot of heads.
Lmaooo this is really funny.. Sprint is doing it the right way.. Verizon is doing it the Hudini way.. Making you think their doing some big scale coverage when their not.. Im willing to bet anything that does dot which are mainly them saying the city that their bringing it to but what is the actual coverage of that city or town??? Cus just like Fios, they'll tell you that they have it in all 50 states.. But thats BS..CUS I live in NYC.. Currently in Manhattan, was in Brooklyn, the Bronx.. And every time I try to get Fios.. It was unavail in that area.. So im not even worried one bit.. I'll stick to my carrier (Sprint) who has 4G devices and actually rolling out 4G to NYC this month.. Hey that rhymed nicely lmao
this just in: every phone being announced by Palm will be LTE.
oh, I'm sorry, I read that wrong.
it says they will all be LaTE.
my mistake.
I see what you did there.
I guess this will go hand-in-hand with the restructured (i.e. tiered) data plans?
if Apple announces a 4g iPhone on Verizon before Palm has a new phone, that'll be mighty tempting
With broken GPS on 4G, will people get lost faster?
hate this companies name.. "verizon". I think gayspice would have been better!
I love the comment DErek leaves about the VZW all in positive
never negative, but in his comments on Sprint or AT&T he`ll be on the negative side! I believe VZW get him free service
for that I think! he is VZW customer anyway! But still I come in here to read his comments,I sure they are good one.
Holy Crap! Akron ohio is getting 4g? maybe there will finally be some decent service there.
Does anything in Akron ever happen that needs the urgency of 4G speeds?
