Verizon to get Palm Pre Plus? 58
Both Phone Arena and Engadget are reporting that Verizon's version of the Pre will be 'different,' Phone Arena going to far as to say that the 'Palm Pre Plus' is what's in Verizon's system.
Given that we've seen the P101VZW in Verizon's system before, it doesn't come as much surprise (the Sprint version doesn't have that extra plus 1). Our hunch is still that we're looking at a memory bump, but that's more of an educated guess than inside info.
We're also expecting the Pixi on Verizon with WiFi, as webOS is meant to be. That'd be the P121VZW, if you roll by FCC IDs instead of product names.
Thanks to Tcub for the tip!

I hope Palm follows the Droid and adds removable memory to the pre for Verizon. You can not follow what Apple does, they are just too big, Palm needs to make their device better spec wise like droid is trying to do.
.............but, but, but I want more memoryyyy!!!
As Dogbert said, it's hell being an early adopter.
Yeah, but it's even more hell having to pay for Verizon. Yesterday, I was considering what it would cost to switch to verizon. And it turns out that the ETF is only a tiny percentage of the cost.
I have 3 phones on my plan, all of which use messaging and data. I have a corporate discount from my employer: 25% on Sprint, 26% on Verizon. The Sprint discount applies to the plan and additional line charges. The Verizon discount applies only to the plan. It does *NOT* apply to data for each line and the additional messaging features.
Here's the bottom line:
2 year plan costs sprint: $2699.64 ($112.49/mo)
2 year plan costs verizon: $4851.60 ($202.15/mo)
There is no way in HELL that whatever features that Verizon's Pre & Pixi have are worth $2151.96 to my family. Verizon folks, you can have the features. Add in the ETF costs and it's even worse.
Of course, I could have made a significant error. But I tried as much as I could think of to get the price lower.
here, here
I have 2 Vzw lines at 25% off for both phone plans and 20% off data plans. I think every company has different deals with the cellular companies.
I agree with you, it would be too much of an impact to switch on your end.
Interesting. When I do that in my situtation, here's what happens:
2 year plan costs sprint: $2,699.64 ($112.49/mo)
2 year plan costs verizon: $4,352.54 ($181.36/mo)
The new Pre & Pixi features aren't worth $1652.90 to me either.
If I take out one phone from each plan, I get:
2 year plan costs sprint: $2,339.82 ($97.49/mo)
2 year plan costs verizon: $3,062.02 ($127.58/mo)
This is getting closer, but I still don't think that the Pre & Pixi features are worth $722.20 to me.
But all this being said, I could have made some enormous error as a result of not understanding how Verizon billing works. If you could provide some details, that'd be helpful.
That's a no brainer. After an employee discount I pay $62 a month for Unlimited everything. That's why I'm sticking with Sprint. You just can't beat the value and since I came from Verizon, I can't tell the difference in call quality. Both provide great coverage in my area. Hmmm? Could it be because they both use CDMA and share cell towers? If so, why is Verizon so expensive? Something to think about.
Yup. Tip to anyone that works for apparently any branch of state or federal government: Sprint (actually, I think VZW and AT&T also) will give you 15% off if you just bring in a check stub. Not a well advertised company discount.
That's about $10 off per month for me on 450 Everything data. Enough to offset all taxes and fees, plus a couple bucks.
What I want to know is why my employer only gets a crappy 12% discount?!!!
There is no way I would switch to VZ from Sprint for just a bump in memory capacity. I am very happy with Sprint's service and plans!
I will wait until Palm puts out Pre II with Sprint's 4G before I buy another phone!
Palm should have realesed the pixi with wifi for sprint as well, even if they had to wait before doing so. I understand the market value for repeat customers (like its been done with flash drives), but this is just unfair really.
You really do not understand tech product cycles, do you?
That was Sprint's call, not Palms.
And Palm's answer should've been..no.
i dont know what they can "plus" except the microSD slot.
Better camera, more internal memory storage and for running apps, and keyboard like the Pixi are a few that come to mind.
Sorli...
The Sprint Pre is clocked at 500MHz. The processor can do 600MHz. A small bump but would be bragging rights for "faster."
Last I heard, it was under-clocked for heat problems on the early releases of the chip which made it into a lot of first release phones. My info is from the forums so it's questionable.
Could be. But my guess is that it has more to do with battery than heat. But I could be wrong.
looked down by verizon to prevent rooting, that's what verizon considers a plus.
hell, its not too hard to move it from Verizon to Sprint. both use CDMA, so worse comes to worse, get one on verizon and port over :)
I did the same thing, but reversed. I got my Sprint Pre on one of my Vzw lines. :)
I'm curious and I bet others are. You got a thread here on how you got Sprint to unlock you? Heh, and even how you got VZW to let you sign up with it?
I was a bit pissed when they announced the pre without a microsd slot, but given the problems mine caused on my old phone (and the issues my mates have with theirs on Android), I'm kinda glad it doesn't!
It really depends on the company and their design. Samsung has a great design for their MircoSD cards. Ive never had a issue with theirs. LG, Moto, HTC, and Nokia all are terrible. Ericcson is the worst.
It has to be more memory. Probably comes with video recording and a Verizon entertainment package. It would also need its own navigation program. It probably will come with other programs that Verizon has agreements with. Im starting to make myself jellious. Okay they will have to pay more every month and to cancel their contract. Now im feeling better.
The video recording is a software issue, so if verizon's "comes with" recording, then other webOS devices would most likely get it too.
Doubt video recording would be included in a Verizon version.
If the plus is just bumping the 8GB to 16GB or even adding a microSD slot, no big loss to me. I dont even see myself filling up the 8GB I have now (that's what a digital camera and 80GB Zune are for).
For Palm to compete/survive, they will need to refresh their devices regardless of the carrier at least annually. Being in the Sprint Premier Customer program and able to qualify for the discounts sooner, they will need to have new hardware available more often otherwise customers are going to bounce around to try different devices from different manufacturers. Maybe I'll try the Hero in June if no new Pre is on the horizon since I already have one and can easily switch between devices. Palm should want to disuade this kind of behavior by upgrading their harware, even if the upgrades are minor (memory upgrades, better camera, etc.) I know this sounds very Apple-like but its a good business model for how consumers are buying products.
I was thinking the same thing. Some things I would like to see from Palm to keep me from checking out Android:
1. Hardware Update (anything regarding a more solidly constructed Pre), Maybe a Pixi with wifi and faster processor.
2. More Memory
3. An update that takes care of some of the lag.
4. A more robust SDK for better apps.
If they hit two of those before spring I'll stick with the platform. The pre is a great phone, but Sprints Premier Program forces me to reconsider yearly and puts some pressure on Palm to keep it moving.
1.3.5 care of the Lag issue supposedly
Ares has been released for a most robust SDK
ares is NOT a more robust developing environment. it's just a more simplified method of developing apps. the initial comment, and something i agree with, is that palm must introduce an SDK that allows hardware-level access. at this point, with the current SDK, we'll see nothing better than "web-apps." iphone, s60, android and even winmo quality apps are still a ways off (in terms of functionality, not form).
The Sprint Premier customer benefit of upgrading early after 1 year instead of 2, does other carrier (VRZ, AT&T, Tmo) offer this benefit in any way? If not, this is the single biggest benefit being with Sprint for me, other than slightly lower monthly service fees. I get a new phone relatively cheap every year, with ever improving features and specs. This is honestly what keep me a loyal Sprint customer for over 10 years. Just don't see myself jumping to a different carrier soon.
Vzw does offer 1 yr upgrades on 2 yr contracts on a certain price plan, forgot what it was. I think anything above 59.99 or 69.99.
Go and check out the Droid, but you will NOT be impressed! It does not have pinch to zoom, it does not run multiple apps despite what the commercials say (it runs multiple widgets and only a set number), it will not have Flash, and the side-sliding keyboard is ridiculously hard to slide open!
I tell you what I'm fed up with the Palm Pre, my daughter bought the HTC Hero and I was INSTANTLY impressed! Video recording, voice dialing, widgets, I KNEW I should waited until December, instead I bought the Pre in August. Currently wanting to SWAP the Pre for the HTC Hero!!! Any Takers????
you are out your mind
rider910 live in dallas by any chance? I might consider it.
When I brought my Pre in June and read that it only had 8GB, I knew and told myself that as a early adopter and since I'm a Sprint Premiere customer (upgrade every yr) I'll just get most current version when June comes around.. And from the looks of it I'm going to be right. So no need for jealousy to rear its ugly head on my part.. Patients is key.
If you're a doctor, patients are key.
If you're a Palm user, patience is key.
If you don
Exactly why I got my Pre on ebay cheap so that I could allow my contract to expire. I anticipated a better pre or pre 2 in the following years obviously. This way once my contracts up, I can get the discount on my next device brand new from Sprint if I need to.
Either way I am happy with my Pre! I would like a microsd card so I could take it out to copy pics to my pc rather than always plugging it into the pc.
I would be more excited by a hardware quality bump than a memory bump. I have an iPhone, Pre and Hero with 8GB in all of them and except for the app memory limit on the Pre have not felt myself wishing I had more. The biggest thing that keeps me from enjoying to use my Pre every day is the way it feels. It looks so beautiful on the touchstone, then you pick it up and the plastic feel cheap, the slider is weak and it just doesn't feel good, particularly in contrast to my iPhone and Hero. If they could rev the hardware and make it feel solid, that would be a big plus to me.
I will probably pay to upgrade if Sprint gets a Pre 2 (I am on the Premiere Customer Plan, plus my sales rep is a pretty decent guy), if that was to happen. I have to say I really like my Pre over HTC and WinMo and playing with my iPod Touch, I find I like the feel and the size of the Pre. One of those not to small, not to big, just right sort of feels for me.
Another thought is that the +1 is just for running the hardware at full speed instead of throttled back like the current Pre is. That would probably be enough to have to go through the FCC approval process again.
a verizon rep told me there pre is a world phone, but I don't believe him.
Perhaps the Verizon phones won't be made with defective processors, allowing them to run reliably at 600Mhz.
I would hope this PLUS is the microSD slot that I have read about Palm possibily adding to the PRE.
Pre's form factor will not allow an SD reader.
More onboard memory, better camera, less under clocking, special apps, better battery or coming with Touchstone are the more likely perks. Whatever the plus, it's going to fit inside the current shell. Palm does not have the resources to support an alterered chassis. It would be as big a blow to their company as abandoning the Garnet PIMs, the creepy lady ads or the app limit fiasco.
I'm staying on Sprint. Hopefully Palm releases better WebOS phones in the end for Sprint.
hey remember that every year is gonna be the same thing now, and with both companies and you can upgrade with full discount every two, so now Verizon will get an updated PRE and then sprint will and so on, personnaly I'll stick with Sprint, i have a lot of music, a lot of pics, a few apps,(rarely use them)(like iphone customers, 1% use some apps) they are there just for bragging rights. I have 5 lines and the price is excellent, not to mention free nights fater 7pm, free roaming and now free mobile to mibile with any carrier. Verizon is over priced and over rated, I'm not into that. and like someone said maybe the next Sprint Pre will be 4G.
The question is, will we get the next improved device or will we be sitting here waiting for it to be released on Sprint and always be behind because we are early adopters? Will our next hardware update be the Pre Plus, and then Verizon gets the next great device because of CES??? And then we wait again?
Hey quit complainin'. lol. How long have we waited on Verizon? I think there will eventually be enough webOS devices to go around. Hopefully by next June we will be able to have a Pre on any network we like. And with any luck there'll be decent parity on hardware.
I am far from complaining. I hope for parity. I welcome the addition of other networks. I will never change but the more WebOS devices the better. I just hope no network gets screwed, especially those of us who took a chance on 6/6/09. I welcome the communist (red) service providers population... :)
wow. i like the guy who said he bought his on ebay! lol that's exactly what i have done! i just had my account switched so that my number is no longer the primary number so that my mother would be able to get a new phone every year instead of me (she tends to get bored with her phones very quickly and starts complaining about it being crappy). so i bought mine on ebay so i dont have to renew my contract and can still get a newer pre in 2011 when it comes out (i bought me a blackberry 3 days before the pre came out. i didn't have enough money to get the pre). so for now, i'm stuck with my BB because sprint (and every other carrier) is stupid with not letting people switch when they want. i mean sure you can go out and buy a new phone for 500 bucks, but what if the phone you are wanting costs 100 after all these rebates and what not, and yet the phoen you currently have was the exact same? at least they should allow some sort of "trade" for phones of near equal value.
i would have gotten a pre from Sprint themselves last thursday, but my cousin wasn't able to get an override for my 2 yr contract (is a manager at our sprint store, but corporate told him he couldn't do it unless it was a very important situation lol). so as i said, i bought mine on ebay for 100 bucks! that's pretty cheap compaired to normal prices. though Radio shack and some Walmarts are selling the pre for 79.99 with a new two year contract, all instant rebate (yay! lol) and even teh pixi for 29.99!!!!! i REALLY wanted the pixi but there is no way in hell i was going to pay any amount for a phone that NEEDS WiFi.
Hi I am looking for much more more memory. What do you think they will get it for us?
location villa bali
What bullshit. F that.
