Verizon Hit with Nationwide Data Outage; Update: Should be back 85

by Dieter Bohn Wed, 03 Mar 2010 12:37 pm EST

Data not working on your Palm Pre Plus? It's not just you: Verizon appears to be suffering from a nationwide data outage (though it's working sporadically for some folks). Engadget has confirmed it with Verizon, twitter is fairly lit up, and naturally Verizon being a BlackBerry-heavy network our friends at CrackBerry.com are all over it. We're not seeing a gigantic outcry in our own forums yet - but perhaps y'all are on WiFi?

We know there's a healthy Sprint vs. Verizon debate here at PreCentral, but set that aside for a moment. Verizon users: Got Data? Sprint Users: Have Pity.

Update: Data should be working again, via Engadget.

Yes Big Red got hit with that too. After all all mighty Verizon isnt perfect either lol YEEESSSS. Anyway sorry Verizon people i feel for ya having no 3g can suck since our phones depend on it. Boy i hope its fixed soon. I am glad i have 4G sorry i had to do this one no haert feeling. I hope its running soon for you again and if not there is always some one else you guys can switch to. Good luck. I really do feel for you guys. i just need to be a little bit sacastic sorry lol

Don't worry, it happens to everybody.

Even to Sprint with less than half of the customer base that Verizon has:

http://www.precentral.net/sprint-data-issues

Should have gone with Sprint - cheaper & it is working.

I would love to, it would be like 20 bucks cheaper a month then what I'm paying Verizon now... but the nearest Sprint store is about 100 miles away and I can't port my phone number

You can port your number anywhere. Numbers are assigned to customers, not the location of the store activating the device.

And you can take your number anywhere, the drawback though is your callers are subject to long distance charges if you live in TX with say a NY number.

this is my case and i have got over it by having a google voice number in my area code.

What you mention about porting any number is only partially true. The number may be able to be ported but only if the carrier supports that market. There are cases where numbers can't be ported for specific reasons.

man some people use this as a way to jump all over vzw users. They are a great company and work for many people. Sprint is also great. It depends on what you need/want.

I see this comment all the time. And I think it is true, about the cost. But then I see this response...which is also true for many..including me!

"My phone is provided by my employer. My employer has made a business decision to stay with Verizon. Our employees are heavy travelers and experience has shown no other carrier had the coverage that Verizon does."

I know Sprint supposedly roams on VZ network, but is it equivalent? What about in heavy use area, will Sprint phones get the dregs of the 3G signal resulting in poor data performance? I don't know...hey, if Sprint would like me to test the performance of C40 alongside my Pre+ over the next year...I wouldn't have a problem with that!

Sprint's roaming agreement does not extend to EVDO. The agreement is for voice and 1x data only.

sad... but it makes sense. why pay the extra $$$ for verizon if sprint could roam 3g off the same network for less?

Why? Have you seen their smartphone selection lately? Ugh!

I've got Verizon (use to be alltel) in Northern WI and I have data at the moment (I was on WiFi before so I don't know if I had it earlier or not)

I'm on Verizon, in Knoxville, TN, and I have data! At the office I'm usually on Wifi, so I turned it off and Voila...I pulled up Drudge Report where I found a story of Apple suing rival HTC as phone competition rises...hey, where had I heard of that possibility before? Oh yeah, here at Precentral!

I didn't notice a data loss, but I have been on wifi at home and now at the office so far this morning. But data it is working fine right now.

I am in Pa and at work with out wifi and I have no issues with my phone.

Wow, so we have Fail Whale for twitter, I think its appropriate to have Dead Red for VZW. Wow, nationwide outage?! Big red...thats just craaaazy.

even a stone can defeat a gloating giant

Data working fine in Southwest, VA...

WebOS internal used to find new hidden stuff in every new updates, how ever nothing came in 1.4? No seedings for anything new? VOIP? Voice dialing? Better virtual keyboard?

Good question...wrong topic! ;)

I think we are talking about a Verizon data outage in this article.

Webos internals already found the voice dailong code. You weren't paying attention.

I seem to be okay with data on Verizon--Cleveland, Ohio area.

sorry to hear that... Not about data outage, but that you live in Cleveland :-)

I just checked my 3G connection, and Houston has data as well. Maybe they have it fixed...

Chicago
full 3G a of this morning

Wonder what the map looks like now. :(

Although, I still envy the RAM and storage doubling. :)

lol

+1 on the RAM thing.

that's awesome Derek. I love the patented Horatio dramatic pause!

that guy is crazy... In the 3rd frame, he's putting glasses on top of his glasses! Or taking a layer off perhaps....

otherwise, I did get a good chuckle :) thanks Derek

LOL LMFAO

LOL!!

This is so F'n hilarious! This guy's so bad-ass that he's putting on sunglasses over his sunglasses...

Thanks for making my day Derek!

Damn, I feel for you Verizon webOS users. I remember going nuts w/o data connection on my 1st Pre due to a glitch. Don't know if it was from the hardware or software but Sprint couldn't figure it out so they just gave me a new Pre...this was back in October!

Someone here said they don't wanna switch to Sprint because their number cannot port over...is that true? and if so, why?

The guy I talked to at Sprint said that he couldn't port it becuase the number was from an area that Sprint does not cover. Of course, even if I could port the number, all my calling and data would be roaming on Verizon, (Sprint has no coverage up here at all) which I don't think would make Sprint very happy.

what's with the hating on verizon here? all webOS users should stick together.

both verizon and sprint will be here in 3 years. It's palm and our amazing phones that may not, regardless of carrier. so let's stick together :)

Yes...+1...I agree...feel the Pre, the webOS love, it can bring us together.

I do think we waste too much time looking for things to...complain about. It's a downer sometimes, man...and that's coming from someone born in the 1960's!

get a room already and give some love to eachother you guys

Derek Kessler... you are my hero.

No issues with data in Lincoln NE. I think this be a false alarm.

and i travel all over america too for my business and i have sprint and never had any issues have the same even sometimes better coverage then with verizon well of course verizon has a bigger network of there own but sprint roams in them and i normally always get evdo or 3g when i roam so you can say i get the same coverage data too and there are sometimes spots where verizon doesnt has coverage and i do. so its an epual network if u consider the roaming on sprint. and for and sprint nav seems to work way better then verizon nav i think verizons nav works over there data network where sprints also runs over the gps alone. i can use the nav if i am only in 1x or roam i think maybe i am wrong verizons doesnt seem to work in 1x or roam when u activate it in roam or 1x. at least when i still had verizon like 1 and a half year ago it didnt seem to work. maybe now it does. and the great thing about the pre is you can have a phone call and still can have gps nav running at least i can on sprint not sure if that works on verizon as well. but i am glad you guys have 2g back.

$40 more a month and they can't even keep that "superior network" up.

Sorry, I don't have pity for a network that throws it in everyone's face how 'great' they are.

I'm posting this from my Sprint Pre using EVDO by the way. ;)

well if you say it enough times people start to believe it... And you would think if verizon is bigger and better and makes more money they would be the 1st to get 4g right?? Wrong..lol when is verizon getting 4g? Prolly after they rape everyone for a couple more years....

your right pre daddy like i said i have to be a little sacastic but no heart feelings. webos is great and we can agree verizon and sprint are good networks and we can agree at&t isnt so much lol

@Mattykinsx lol

Why does everyone look for a reason to 'hate' the 'other'? Why is there a mentality among the human race that to make ourselves feel like we are the best, or in the best place, we have to spend our efforts talking down someone who is a little bit different than us? Why are we so insecure that we want to do this?

Wait...where am I? For a moment there, I thought I was back in Sociology class in college! Whew, I'm glad it was just a nightmare...and at least I wasn't in my underwear...like the last time I had that dream.

I guess they are right when they say all those classes you took back in school don't matter, you'll never use what you learned in the real world.

Anyway, back to the subject at hand, [just kidding mode is on] my Verizon data was never down and is better than your tiny Sprint network that is so puny that you have to plead and whine with the superior Verizon network to have the 3G scraps off our massive table, HAH! You puny mere Sprint subscribers who pay less for less where less is more... [just kidding mode is off]

Maybe Rodney King had something there when he said "Can't we just get along?"

That's funny considering that Sprint's 3g is second only to 'mighty Verizon'.

Verizon begs to be hated, sorry. They really do.
Their commercials are geared toward how "sweet" they are, how "superior" they are, when you do that people will not always respond kindly.

And I don't want to hear that crap that they "have" to do that. You don't see Google going around and saying how sweet they are.

If someone begs to be hated, is it the best choice to comply? Sometimes, is it better to 'turn the other cheek', or at least to dodge a blow? If someone asks me to hate them, can I choose not to?

Sometimes we do need to take a strong stand against an injustice we come across in our lives...but does a wireless company we don't agree with rise to that level?

I could justify turning a 'cheek' to almost any injustice you can come up with, but I'll pass.

When you go around spouting that you're the best and something like this happens, I just laugh.

And I know damned well that if the roles were reversed, they would do the same.

Ah, so you do make a choice...you pass. It is your right. By the way, another choice is grace...undeserved merit. We can choose to show grace in a situation where it hasn't been earned. It's not necessarily a concept we humans come to naturally though...it's not an easy choice, but it can be a good one.

And I understand frustration when you have someone claiming to be the best. I used to have a 'hatred' for the Florida Gators when Coach Spurrier was there. My UT Vols always regarded that battle as one of the seasons most important games. Coach Spurrier had a way of talking up his team and down the opponent that helped to fuel the fire of hatred between our two teams. I've decided to admire the best in both instead. Sometimes I succeed, other times I don't. But I kind of like the feeling when I do succeed...instead of intense 'hatred' of one and intense 'love' for the other, I see things to admire in both...(don't tell anyone, but I still want my Vols to win the game!)

I am a customer of Verizon. I do not go around spouting I'm the best. Well, I might in a kidding sort of way, but I don't really think that. My company has Verizon and says they won't change. My company is convinced no other carrier can provide the coverage Verizon can. I have suggested they consider Sprint. It might take a few years before they consider changing. My phone is provided by my company. If I could choose for myself I might choose Sprint. I do think they have the best deal. But I don't pay for my phone so I have a better deal right now through my company with Verizon.

I do say that I have experienced better coverage more consistently than any other carrier, when I have taken the time to compare. I travel a lot and I have had coverage when people with other carriers have not. That isn't absolute, just in general. I know one place in Alabama and one place in Florida where AT&T has better service. I guess I need to get around more! ;)

Sorry about the long post...back to work, yikes!

i wouldn't say that verizon begs to be hated. they have a better, more extensive network than sprint. everyone would agree with that.

it's just a matter of cost for extra value. i've chosen to use a smaller network (sprint) because it's much cheaper. verizon's bigger network isn't worth the price hike, for me. other people may feel differently and that's cool.

if anything, i think all of us sprint people are jealous of verizon's advertising and their face time and exposure with the public. poor sprint just can't catch a break, even when they're doing good things.

if anything, let's hate on apple. this patent accusation is just the latest proof that they're evil. and apple is the #1 threat to webOS, not verizon, sprint, or any other carrier.

Larger network yes for Verizon, better no. In several recent data tests Sprint beat Verizon, so no not everyone would agree that Verizon has a better network.

Punishment for your sales droids not trying to sell the pre and pixie :-)

miami fl seems ok :)

to first comment you do not have 4g sorry

If they are in a Sprint 4G area, then yes it is 4g, it meets the standards set for 4g, just not the same as LTE does not mean its not 4g, sorry.

Exactly WHY should Sprint users have pity? Verizon constantly brags that they have biggest, best, fastest network and charge more to use it. They offer the upgraded version of the webOS devices which are not available to Sprint customers. If your mouth "writes a check", you had better be able to cash it. I will show Verizon and it's customers every bit of respect and sympathy they have shown Sprint users and owners of the original webOS devices -- NONE.

"most reliable network"... Can you browse me now? - no!

roflcakes!

yeah, pittsburgh down all over... polled about 40 people in my office coming in from all directions on morning commute and all have no data. We occassionally get the 3G (or 1XEV depending on device) icon but no data behind it.

I am having no issues with 3g data and I am south of Kansas City, and my wifi is turned off so the 3G data is fine and working for me at least.

Des Moines Iowa is working as well.

All good here in FL!!

Company currently has VZW Blackberrys (myself included), but I also have my own personal Palm Pre Plus!

No issues with either phone.

Wow, as mature as most palm pre users are supposed to be (judging from an earlier admob demographic post), I am a little dissappointed to see such sophmoric and derogatory comments against one carrier or another. Any man-made equipment on ANY network is prone to have downtime from time to time.

Yes, VZW is more expensive, but one could argue: 'you get what you pay for... infrequent downtime, wider coverage, etc!'

I'm not judging... just saying

in sf bay area and I'm having no problems. Why does evryone hate on Verizon....we all have the pre so it shouldn't matter who the phuck your carrier is.

Wow, so much Verizon hate. It's not like I hate Sprint users just because they are on a different carrier. I actually tried Sprint and the Pre when it first came out and as much as I loved the webOS, I always lost service and the Pre started doing the bad pixel/oreo within days.
If this ludicrous naysaying is what the webOS community has to offer then color me unimpressed. Pre could've launched on AT&T and the bandwagon would still be full from this site. Horrible, horrible fanboyism.

Data never dropped for me because the "nationwide" VZW crisis ended up affecting little areas across the US for like what, 3 hours? If that? Accidents happen, like advertising 4G.

If memory serves, we had a data outage on Sprint about a month ago.

At any rate, as a Sprint user, I am generally thankful for our ability to roam on Verizon. So you won't find me making fun of Big Red any time soon.

bahwahahaha...thats funny...
(i really have no problem with verizon..beside them having the pre +....jerks)

I don't expect perfection from ANY wireless carrier, or for that matter corporation, or for that matter people.

But when you go around spouting how "perfect" and "great" and "superior" you are, I could honestly not give a shit when you trip.

verizon pre+, data still working fine in NW Illinois. :]

I have not had any problems in south-central KS, but I do use WiFi most of the time.

I like how Horatio Caine is putting on a 2nd pair of glasses on top of his 1st pair. You know you're the 'man' when you wear 2 pairs of Maui Jims!

AKA Robert Stack in Airplane! Except he was taking off a pair, revealing a second pair underneath.

seems lexington, ky. has data. Haven't seen a problem yet...(keeping fingers crossed in the mean time)

this may be oh so 30 comments ago, but almost every number can be ported. Only problems we have had porting numbers is actually from within. Nextel to Sprint. There is tricks involved in porting numbers. Some reps just don't know how to do it. Regardless of coverage.

i can believe that. i switched my number from nextel to sprint. if i look online, i still have a direct connect number associated to my phone, even though i can't use it with sprint.

no matter to me, but still interesting.

Hmm, I was up at 4:30 am Pacific and never saw a single data issue with the Palm Pre Plus on Verizon here in the Puget Sound, Washington area. Was this really a nationwide outage? Was it just for a couple of minutes or is it still something people are experiencing? Has anyone reading PreCentral.net seen this at all?

Its a difficult conversation...lol.. IDEN is just an odd network when dealing with ports.. Sometimes they port, sometimes they don't.

Here's an article from PC World reporting the results of their most recent testing of the top mobile companys' 3G networks for reliability & speed. Sprint is not the fastest but comes out as more dependable than Verizon. AT&T improved significantly from the tests done last April.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/189592-7/atandt_roars_back_in_pcworlds_se...

Verizon, you got a lot of map in your soup.

Funny, I had a die hard Apple fan (ATT fan to mention) come into my store. Bragging about his phone. As we did a little battle between his phone and my precentral Pre (which my employer does not want me to show.oops) And then showed him up with the 3g coverage. While he can only have 2g. And when he set up his wifi and had to log on our Sprint Wifi signal to do it.. He ended up breaking his contract with ATT and keeping his iphone as a higher priced ipod and walked out of the store with a sprint phone. Now being in the army, he knew that pre is not durable, that he needed. But he loves the pre. As his friends he came with all laughed at him as they all had sprint. Well getting it at least.

in sf bay area and I'm having no problems. Why does evryone hate on Verizon....we all have the pre so it shouldn't matter who the phuck your carrier is.

I've had data all day yesterday and all day today so far (southeast PA). In fact, I was sending out tweets from my VZW Pre this morning.

Although, I heard it was Verizon the ISP having data issues (confirmed by someone I know who was on the phone with VZ about their T3 connection). So maybe that's what it was?

I have data here in NYC, no problems to report all morning

Edit: Looks like it is down here in NYC this afternoon 1:15 ET

I have sprint, just thought that should be known. I work for
Tmobile. We all know that all carriers have outages from time to time, so I think a lot of people here are cheering for VZW to fail. They have great service most of the time, but so does Sprint atleast where I live in Orlando FL. I have 2 Palm Pre's and my bill with my employee discount is 115.00 with taxes included that's amazing! I agree with most of the posters here VZW is getting what they asked
for with all those Adds. I think
ATT will be jumping all over this
one! Before everyone says something about the discount I mentioned and that I work for Tmobile, the discount is inder my girlfriends employee.

Hey Verizon, that blue and black box with the antennas... don't unplug it again!
