Verizon Palm Pre Plus End of Life October 21st? 65
by Dieter Bohn Wed, 25 Aug 2010 1:42 pm EDT
PhoneDog has an internal Verizon document that appears to verify yesterday's rumor that the Verizon Palm Pre Plus will be End-of-Life'd in October with one more important detail: the date will be October 21st. Interestingly, the Palm Pixi Plus is slated to last until March 31st, 2011, which may lend further credence to those who want to believe that the Palm Pre's successor really will land in October.

That, or Verizon is simply phasing out all Palm phones.
Fingers crossed this is not what's happening!
I'm surprised it's being kept alive so long actually and not killed earlier like most phones that don't sell well.
What I don't get it Verizon wasn't happy with Pre sales and then kept the Pre full price at $500+ when more powerful phones like the Droid X and Incredible were at that same price.
I would have bought a Pre off contract if it's full price was in the $300 range; that's how AT&T has it full priced.
Verizon didn't want to sell these things after all.
Well, Verizon lists the Pixi Plus with a placeholder end-of-life of March 31, 2011. So, they're not "simply phasing out all Palm phones."
Hope it's true...but, as the mystics say, "Hope is for suckers."

...all that glitters is not gold...
With no leaks at all yet, September is definitely out of the question and October isn't looking too good, either. I think we're likely in for an approximately black Friday release. So, expect the hardware on or before (but not much before) November 26th. For there to be a release by October 21, they'd already have to be making the new phones by now.
And something in manufacturing is something leaked. Period.
The writing has been on the wall my friends. Palm is nothing more than a SOFTWARE subsidiary of HP. No new hardware will be coming out anytime soon. And honestly....if it does I have the feeling is gonna look like some crappy ipaq phone. *smh*
no offense, but you are nuts.
I don't take offense to weak comments ;) Come on Muesli, you gotta come stronger than that!
The point is, I'm right and you know I'm right. Palm has done nothing to show me I'm wrong.
Im doing it for you, man. I dont actually want to offend. But in what world can one live to say that Palm is just a software company and there are not gonna be new products anytime soon, when it has been already confirmed that palm is launching a tablet at the beginning of 2011?
If you listen to the last palmcast with Rahul Sood youll also understand that Palm is still Rubinstein
not really Hp is releasing a tablet with PALM'S SOFTWARE ON IT so yes palm=software
lowering the IQ is a new way of trolling :(
At least you think you are right, with an endorsement from a noob, everyone else must be wrong.
Absence of proof is not proof of absence.
Check out this new site that launched today. They claim to have the full story along with specs on the mythical C40:
http://www.webosworld.com/
They claim to have the full story or completly made it up. And I lean to the last one.
+1 who is this webos world?
That was my first conclusion as well, but a few things they revealed I had heard about months ago from a trusted source of mine.
It still seems fishy though because they haven't revealed their identity and they manipulated one of the comments I posted on their site.
I think HP intends on using Palm employees exclusively as activists in the company's lobbying efforts in Washington. And that assertion has just as much basis in fact as yours. Actually, my assertion is really more viable than yours, because unlike yours it has no _contradictory_ evidence at all.
I guess that makes RIM and Apple and Google software makers for their Asian partners because none of them own factories. Have any relevant points or are you just filling in for Kinster?
Verizon LTE is supposedly set for launch in November. The timing is awfully close. Roadrunner is supposed to be a synonym for "fast." It could be signs of an LTE Pre2 released in conjunction with the LTE roll-out.
or not.
Verizon will not release any phones that will work on there LTE network when it is launched in November. The only devices that will work on the new network will be mobile hotspot and usb devices. Phones will not be released for the LTE network until the middle or late Q1 2011 or early Q2 2011.
I noticed that the Droid Incredible EOL is 3/31/2011, right around the time LTE phones will hit Verizon!!!
Edit: If a 4g/3g phone is released for the LTE network before late March or April, it will more than likely be the iPhone - making the iPhone the only Verizon 4g phone for 3 or 4 months.
Im really tired of all your whining.
We know for sure a tablet is coming on the beginnig of 2011 and is almost impossible to not believe that webOS 2.0 is going to come with some hardware at the end of fall this year.
Let it be Verizon, Sprint at&t or wharever, Im not a carrier fanboi either cos I live in a another country
actually you are showing your a fan boy by believing some imaginary webOS 2.0 phone is around the corner. By the way, it pretty much IS fall and there isn't a peep of something coming around the corner. Maybe next year spring, but by that time you will be the only dude still waiting on a new Palm phone. VIVA ESPANA!
webOS 2.0 is not imaginary. It has already been confirmed to be released later this year. And there are a lot of clues of what is going to include. Confirmed ones.
Dont chase me please. If I replied in a bad mood to one of your comments is because I wanted to reply to the comment, is not personal.
Suzie,
He said "carrier fanboi" which means he doesn't feel attached to a particular carrier.
This is a Palm Fanboy site, we're all fanboys here. Except for those like you who are mentally deficient trolls.
Oh I get it, you called me "Suzie" which is a play on "Susanoo". BRILLIANT!
This may be a fanboy site but it doesn't mean you have to be a blind sheep, loyal to HP/Palm. The truth is, its obvious nothing is on the horizon in terms of software.
Like I said earlier, I'm right and you know I'm right. But its ok, it's hard for people to admit when they're wrong :)
Sorry, but I don't fit into your pigeon holes. I am neither a phanboy or a troll. I am someone who sees pros and cons of each and every platform. At this time I a Pre and webOS user. In the future, that may change.
But, feel free to live in your cave where you choose to ignore the rest of the world believing what you have is best ever...
Anyone still wondering why WebOS 1.4.5 never came out nor why Verizon ever completely solved the GPS issues?
I'm not.
I don't think Palm is going to announce anything till CES. I think they want to start the mind share conversation once more, by rolling out first webOS 2.0 in the fall and holiday season and then going into to launch mode with their next gen hardware device. I think Palm taking their time is them being careful and doing everything they can to get it right this time. Then the webOS tablet will make its debut and then I think there will be a Pixi successor late Spring / Early Summer 2011 thereafter with a bigger screen and yes Wifi.
This post just sounds like another version of "Doom-cast".
Yes. This sounds like all of the rumors last Spring that Verizon sales weren't going too well, Palm was running out of money and was looking to be acquired.
Yes, I think they are going to be acquired this time by a cheapo printer company.
The fact is that webOS 2.0 is confirmed to come by end of this year.
We also know webOS 2.0 is not a "bug fixing" version, is a new version with new biggie features.
This means: palm is launching webOS 2.0 not just for the sake of it but to increase sales (from cero to three, but increase them).
This means that at the bare minimun if not a new launch lets say they are looking for a relaunch of the existing hardware.
If it is a relaunch it does not make any sense at all that verizon phase out just at that very moment the product that palm is trying relaunching with a better version of the OS. Actually the opposite.
Like the "biggie features" android has had for a long time?
Like the "biggie features" android has had for a long time?
Like the "biggie features" android has had for a long time?
Please tell, what are these biggie features on Android that you speak of?
If you believe android is better than webOS for you thats fine. Not gonna enter in a console war because is not the scenario.
For me android is a step back unless they release something that in terms of usability is not just a slighty less mediocre version of windows mobile 6. I came from the Apple side.
In terms of raw number even a symbian has more features than iOS, webOS and android. Just hidden or half baked.
For webOS we dont know the features they are including, we just now about some developers apis. I believe they will follow the webOS way, their own roadmap. So they will include what they believe must be included, let it be somethimg completly new or a meaningfull and working implementation of a feature that existed in my sony ericson ages ago.
your taste in phone operating systems is almost as bad as your taste in music. Drop Kick Murphey's suck, and so does Android. PS, how's that Evo treating you? nub
you guys are like crazy people out of a SyFy movie this is by far the phone with most expectation and rumors that I ever had.
webOS is a great os but has a couple of problems like every one out there and you are expecting to be fixed before cristmas because YOU WANT TO BELIEVE.
that sound funny
It sounds funny because you're a terrible writer.
It sounds funny because you're a terrible writer.
I think it's the people who want a new WebOS handset to show up on Verizon just after October who are the doomsayers. Have you guys looked at Verizon's roadmap for the rest of the year? You thought Palm was treated bad by in-store associates launching after the original Droid? Try the Droid Pro, Samsung Fascinate, HTC Merge 10mp camera/1 ghz+ processor, and multiple Android tablets.
Finally, Verizon is giving the keynote at CES. I wonder what product line they're going to emphasize in that rather prominent placement? Not WebOS. Droid. Droid. Droid.
It's probably for the best that Palm is quietly fading into the background on Verizon for a bit.
Actually, Verizon may introduce the iPhone. On Verizon 2010 was the year of the Droid, 2011 maybe the year of the iPhone.
wow. Funny comments
Why do people still think nothing is coming out soon (ie. Next few months) when HP doled out $1.2 billion for WebOS and publicly stated that they are letting Palm run the show on their existing roadmap.
It's not a matter of 'why not yet' but a question of 'How freaking awesome will the next phone be'?
WebOS 2.0 will bring the capabilities of other phones to the Pre, which opens up a slew of other apps, only two of which the general iPhone crowd really use (shopsavvy, voice searching).
Everything else, Palm already pretty much has, and in a nicer package I might add.
because we have all seen what happens when they let "Palm run the show". That's why they pretty much went out of business.
"WebOS 2.0 will bring the capabilities of other phones to the Pre", so you are saying that whatever Palm comes out with won't be better, but "just as good as".
Well, I will tell you if what Palm comes out with next is "just as good as" what is currently available from everyone else, they might as well pack it up and get out of the business. Why? Because I guarantee that the other manufacturers out there are already focusing on bettering what they already have.
To me there is one problem that both Apple and Palm have -- they are controlling the OS **AND** the hardware. Whereas with Android, manufacturers just have to focus on the hardware, the OS is already there and they don't have to do anything (aside from thinking they have to slap their UI on top of it).
There is no doubt that new hardware is coming before the end of this year (did anyone in here listen to the Palmcast last night?) and it will defintely be state of the art. My only concern is that this new phone will be released on Sprint, I would hate to have to go back to Big Red.
We know webOS 2.0 is coming in the Fall. They need hardware available to show off this update, and we now know it isn't the Pre. Verizon wouldn't sell an OS on a single lower end phone. If they were getting out of the Palm/webOS business, Pixi would go also. That means a new phone to replace the Pre is coming out with webOS 2.0. If it was a slab, I'd expect the Pre to continue. Since it is replacing the Pre I expect it to be a slider.
That's interesting logic - it has good flow. I'll be curious to see if it plays out like you stated.
I love me Pre, and hope for new hardware when my upgrade date arrives. If not I may wait, or go back to a BB. I am not a fan of Droid. Web OS is such a great OS.
I'm going to be hesitant to get a new piece of Palm hardware since the promise of Flash around the time I got my Pre Plus never even came to fruition. For me to consider another WebOS app I'd have to see some seriously cool stuff, because Android seems to be making more progress all the time.
Let's OVER deliver this time guys!
The argument for new hardware is fairly simple:
1. The Palm Pre is over a year old. The Pre Plus and Pixi Plus just a few months shy of a year.
2. Palm had a road map prior to HP purchase. It's safe to assume that the roadmap would introduce new hardware on a regular basis, say 6 months to a year given how quickly the rest of the industry cycles hardware.
3. HP stated that Palm would stick to their roadmap.
4. Having fresh software in the store will help sell hardware. Hence the push for hotapps/pdk and internal HP dev contests plus the constant hype by HP execs about the OS and getting more devs and more software in the pipe.
5. People don't want to put new software on outdated hardware.
6. If new hardware was not in the near future, HP and Palm would keep a low profile and start the hype machine much closer to the real hardware launch. If you start hype too far away from major hardware/software release you risk losing momentum and not regaining it once you've launched.
7. If the Pre Plus and Pixie Plus came out at the same time, why EOL only one versus the other unless new hardware would be forthcoming to fill the gap left.
my main reason for believing that new hardware is forthcoming centers around the push for new software. New software isn't going to help Palm's bottom line much without it also being partnered with new hardware. While HP Certainly has deep pockets they are also shrewd business people and they're not going to just throw money in without some sort of return on investment fairly quickly.
This whole idea that people have had the VZW is dropping the Pre Plus to "make room" for new Palm device is just crazy. The main reason it seems like people are using for this is because the Pixi is sticking around for longer, therefore VZW would have high and low end webOS devices.
Why in the world would they not keep the Pre Plus as a "mid-level" device. That way the would be able to please any audience. Even if the new device has a physical keyboard, it would not compete against the Pre Plus.
The scary thing is that if this is true -- the Pre Plus is going because they are concerned it will compete against the new device, the new device is going to suck against the Android competition...
The SUPER PRE DUAL CORE 4G LTE(wimax) will come in October maybe the 21st as well the life end of the PPP. NO physical keyboard ,and the Pixi will be upgraded in hardware power.
I hope that SUPER PRE will come with 3 different names to the 3 US major carriers. Will see.
Because i work for a business with many sprint phones we have a sprint sales representative. I recently had a conversation with her today about any new upcoming palm phones all that she could say was that it would be announced soon like a month or two and a new palm phone for sprint would be out soonafter. Fingers crossed :)
Since Verizon and Sprint are both CDMA can we have Verizon send their unsold Pre+ units over to Sprint? We will gladly use/buy them until new hardware arrives. Waste not want not.......
Talked to a Verizon employee about an hour ago. Said a Palm Rep/technician came in and hinted about a new device coming in November.

umm we need to read that carefully there. I do believe that "EVDO" is Sprints network. So it says Palm Pre and Evdo on the same line.

My Pre + microphone died so I went to my local verizon wireless. (2nd premature death although all internal. slider is fine!) They didn't stock any Pre +s so I have to get it by mail. Two possibilities in my book 1) pre + sell so poorly they don't keep it in stock, 2) more hopefully new webos device coming out. I think probably 1) is correct but I thought at least a few Pre+ (dusty) were in the back somewhere.
Seemed like android central in this new verizon store. Although some confused semi-smartphone literate android user were milling around. The salesperson was asking the customers if they went through the training!! Guess not. Not sure I want a phone that requires "training."
