Verizon Pre 2 pops up on eBay, actual release date still elusive 39

Verizon Palm Pre 2 on eBay

So, you want a Verizon Palm Pre 2, eh? How much are you willing to pay for one off contract with a bad ESN? Despite the fact that a release date has yet to be revealed, or the Verizon Pre Plus even shown off in public, the phone has made its inaugural appearance on eBay, if only for a brief time.

The phone was advertised as a Palm Pre Plus (Verizon), which likely led to its relatively low bid price of just $46.00 after two bids with just over two days left on the action. The phone was said to have a bad ESN and does not include a charger, and was described as being “great for parts,” you know, assuming that you could find a phone with which to swap those parts. The pictures however, told another story: it was very clearly a Pre 2. We checked in with the seller, confirmed that this was a P102EWW - a CDMA Palm Pre 2,

But then the seller realized just what he had on his hands, and wanting to avoid any iPhone 4 in a bar-style fiascos, decided to pull the auction.

All of this leads us to wonder when we actually might see the Pre 2 on Verizon, Rogers, or really anywhere other than SFR and magical unlocked phone land. At this point we’re doubting that we’ll see it by the end of the year, and with Palm hopefully set to announce something better at CES in three weeks, why bother anymore with "the coming months"?

Regardless, the auction’s been pulled, but we took the liberty of posting the small photos after the break for posterity’s sake. Maybe someday we’ll be able to hold an actual Verizon Pre 2 in our real hands... nah.

There's no visible exterior branding but it looks the real deal.

The Verizon logo would appear on the mirror part, but the seller didn't take that picture.

Maybe nobody noticed but in the upper left corner of the screen it does say Verizon Wireless.

I noticed that too. But I wonder if it says the carrier once the unlocked phone is activated?

How did he/she get hold of it even though its not officially out.

Son of a B... I was watching that auction for the past two days :(

You probably wouldn't want to buy it. For starters there's no Doctor to recover if you need to, Palm doesn't release doctors for unreleased devices. Also there's a high chance that this is a stolen property of Palm.

I agree that it's highly likely to be stolen, but you're wrong on the first point - it'd be plenty useful:

http://www.webosworld.com/2010/12/16/webos-worlds-very-own-sprint-pre-2-...

EDIT: The first link keeps getting cut off instead of converted to a working link, so try http://bit.ly/dPodH7 instead.

An HP or Palm employee probably lost it somewhere, and had it deactivated. That's probably why the ESN is bad, and the seller has no charger for it. Oh well, wish it could have been an iPhone 4 moment, and this would have been a next gen device that the seller found instead.

Edit: The auction has been closed. Somebody is gonna be in trouble now!

I was watching the auction also. I noticed it was a pre 2 but I was keeping my mouth shut.

We have been talking for months for new device innovation comming in 2011 etc !!!! And looks like HP/Palm has been beaten again !!! http://wwwery.com/10607-lg-optimus-2x-official.html I want my Palm Pre X to have the same spec !!! HP can you deliver? Cause the OS is no good if the hardware is non-existant....

Let it go man, just let it go. Live your life.

Trust me Im a lover not a hater....but we seriously need some juice behind the OS and at the moment there isn't enough info going out....

Funny, everyone seemed pretty cool with the stolen iPhone 4. What happened? Did people around here grow a moral conscience?

Hey, don't get us Palm users mixed with those guys.

Lol it's okay for an 'iphone'

"At this point we

I wouldn't mind if Palm carries on with launching the Pre 2 at a very low price point, something like 19.99 or free on contract.

Would make an attractive first smartphone.

I agree. As Dieter & Co. have been saying on the podcast, Palm needs to keep some sort of momentum going to keep developers interested in the platform. Even releasing a Pre 2 would keep a (small but) steady stream of new users on the Palm network, buying apps and possibly generating enough interest to stop hemorrhaging devs while HP finishes whatever is brewing in the back room.

And besides - my son is on his 3rd refurb Pre Plus. If Vzw ever gets the 2, I'm going to push them to replace his next broken refurb w/a 2 under lemon law.

- Mike

That's what I plan on doing as well. I'm on my 4th Pre Plus and the slider is getting worse and worse as well as the front LED not working properly. Just waiting for that dang thing to be released!!

How do you get VZW to send you a replacement phone. My phone is cracked near USB and sometimes my letters don't work and they tell me they wont replace it because it is a manufactor defect or something like that.

A waste, a working Pre2 phone is not worth the money. Palm knows this, which is why they aren't pushing it in the States. Its a a year and a half old piece of technology. If the Pre2 is there big CES announcement then webOS truly has no hope.

Trying to find the subtle cuts or markings Palm normally puts on devices like these. Either way, they have the ESNs logged so the seller is gonna get in big trouble!

Whoever the seller is, he or she has some seriously greasy fingers.

I would not buy a Pre 2 even if it was available on Sprint right now. That said I am mystified as to why this phone isn't already on sale at Verizon.

Why France of all places? Why would HP want to miss the Christmas selling season?

This "strategy" confuses me to no end.

I agree...Verizon had a terrible launch of the Palm Pre Plus and missing out on the X-Mas season with the "2" just doesn't make sense...

I'm looking forward to the "2" coming out on Verizon. For the moment I'm "phoneless" and don't want to buy another Pre Plus without a warranty. Having a bad experience with an E-Bay purchase right now...

OOHHH MAN... I HAD THE HIGH BID... no joke! grrr.

Dear clipseyman,

Thanks!

maybe I asked too many questions......

nvm - I see that it was YOU GUYS who asked too many questions. boo. lol

It's real. Guy on a flight I was on last week had one. He was using it as a hotspot for his iPad, and it clearly said "Verizon" on the mirror behind the slider. He said he got it from his rep, and had no idea that it actually had not been released yet.

So, who thinks it'll be released this Tuesday on Verizon? ;)

it's been well over 1 month since we had the first reports of Verizon Pre 2's being seen. Some HP/Palm guys had them at one of the dev conferences. It seems pretty clear that Verizon is holding them back from the general public until after New Year. HP probably pushed to get them released, and Verizon probably said "sorry, our holiday phone lineup is already set. come see us next year."

lol yeah either that or someone has shiped over a pre 2 and did a little code moddification and took out a pre cdma antena or w.e and put it in the new pre2 hhardware so the baseband wil work or something along tht line

and lets just say the Pre 2 is palms litttle back up device if hp didint wanna play nice sorta a backup plan to keep the company alfoat in case of bad times

In gave up on the PALM WEBOS platform. They have been terrible terrible with everything. Ditching Sprint was also a drawback for me. That's the only reason why I got a contract with them and not ATT. Terrible Terrible.

Anywho, I just decided to post this becuase in all honesty, PRECENTRAL, you guys are just making shit up now. I feel bad there's really no news on here anymore.

Gooday

Damn, too bad they realized what they had. I'd pay forty bucks to attempt to turn it into a Sprint Pre 2.

According to my Verizon Rep, the release date is now set for January 16th.

Saw someone using a pre2 last night in new york. Asked her where she got it and she said "my company just gave it to me" HUH! Has it been realeased anywhere??
