Verizon Pre 2 webOS Doctor 2.0.1 now available 33

Fret not, homebrewers, patchers, and those with inclined to tinker with their phones, HP is caring on the grand tradition of Palm and releasing a webOS Doctor for the Palm Pre 2 on Verizon. In the event that something goes horribly wrong, the webOS Doctor can magically and forcibly reinstall webOS from your computer, resurrecting 99.97%* of all otherwise borked Pre phones. Rejoice, for the Doctor is indeed in.

*This statistic has neither been verified nor tested and was made up for the purposes of this blog post. Regardless, the webOS Doctor has an extremely high success rate at bringing back webOS devices from the dead. It is the Doctor, after all.

How long until homebrew lets me use this on my Pre-. HP may not let me have my 2.0 goodness but I have faith in Homebrew

IF it could be done, a homebrew webOS 2.0. Would there be any limits of a hacked 2.0?

Copyright is the limiting factor here. An automated system that downloads the doctor image you want, and then does the needed modifications, and makes up a new Doctor image for you.

This sort of system is legal since no modified binaries are being distributed.

does this mean we can put 2.01 on pre minus?

Maybe eventually no.

LOL!

True Dat!

this might be the greatest disclaimer i have ever read....

Derek, thank you for using your poetic licence for the greater good. Simple but awesome.

Now we need to hax this onto sprint/verizon pre -/+'s

I second that thought. Also, I hope HP releases their "something to make things right" sooner than their famous "in the coming months" to our "legacy" devices before many webOS users (a great, brave number of them whom have done so already) switch to Android, or dare I say, iOS...

They're probably waiting for everyone to calm down and forget - then they can hold off until Summer (close to Pre3 and TouchPad release dates) before making a final decision. Nobody will care by then. Actually, by now, most probably have calmed down and don't care - and will provide little resistance to a measly offer.

Many people have calmed down, but have made their decisions based on their initial reaction. This is the key to why this is such a big problem. I am on AT&T, so have over a year before my contract is up, and this means that I can't really switch. Verizon Pre Plus owners with a two year contract also have another 11+ months on their two year contract.

Here's the thing, we want WebOS 2 just to hold us over so we can feel comfortable buying new apps for our current phones. I will NOT buy another app for my current phone if I can't get an upgrade to WebOS 2.

i just wanna know who's installed this on a Pre 2 and confirmed flash actually works ?

I was reading this as Sprint, like a doctor to update my phone to 2.0 that was official. It runs it fine I tells ya.

too late had to switch to andriod already. Bummer.

I can see some light at the end of the tunnel

Are you sure it's not an oncoming train?

I'm waiting 'till March for WP7 to get it's update which will include 'cards.' Perfect timing because that seems to be when Sprint is taking my upgrade away.

is it workin on a sprint pre gen1?

Derek you are a master to see the future, any idea if HP will deliver Pre2 to México??

I vote we rename the Doctor to the WebOS Exorcist. Expell those demons.

I went in to a Verizon store today, to get my hands on webOS 2.0. Since I am a Pre- owner, that's the only way I could exprerence it. The first thing is 2.0 is definitely fast, it was damn snappy. I have my P-minus overclocked to 1Ghz and it was still beating my phone in opening apps at the same time. Picture scrolling hasn't improved as far as being able to flick through pictures faster. Ofcouse I had to check out FLASH live in person. I was not impressed, flash video was choppy on two different sites that I checked. And the OS still would not play Flash videos from youtube.(disappointing) So on the Pre 3 Flash content should be smooth, with the 1.4Ghz cpu. Overall was pleased with how snappy 2.0 is. Disappointed in how choppy Flash is.

I just know!!(gut feeling) That someone on Homebrew will definately make webOS 2.0 run on the Original Pre and Pre Plus. Something tells me that you'll have to have it overclocked at 1ghz or so to manage the new OS. Only time will tell...

:)

Soooo, should I even attempt to try this new webOS on the first gen SPRINT phone??? Will it work or not??? Will it screw up my phone??? Cause if I mess up my baby I'm gonna be pissed! I want my update and I want the PRE 3 NOW! lol! I know I may have to wait but seriously, can we use the new webOS 2.0 on the Sprint Palm Pre's???

I ran the beta leaked version on my original Prē for a couple days; it ran pretty good even without overclocking, although a couple of tasks were noticeably slower. The lack of patches made me reinstall 1.4.5., however. It did make me realize how much I'd been relying on homebrew.

I just ant to take the time to say, I don't know what everybody is getting all pissy about with the 2.0 upgrade. I see it like this, if hp/palm (whatever you want to call it) doesn't want to give us loyal cust. Base 2.0 then forget them.. I'll tell you if it wasn't for homebre/preware, I don't think I would even have this phone anymore. So give it up to the homebrew dev. And lets start showing our appreciation by donating. Cuz if you ask me homebrew dev is the reason why we still have this pre, not hp. Think about it, without the dev apps and patches would you still be here? Not me for sure. So 4get what hp can do, and lets put all of our trust and faith in the homebrew comm. Ya dig!! Lol

Some people don't really see WebOS as better than Android or iOS, so for them, there is very little attachment to their Pre or Pre Plus. There are others, like myself, who see WebOS 1.4 with the gesture area as a BETTER operating system, and we stick with WebOS because we feel it is a better user experience.

This is why people are upset, because we do NOT want to switch to Android or WP7 or whatever else, because we love WebOS. Now, the whole WebOS 2 issue is all about making sure that apps we buy today will run on our next WebOS phone. If we get an upgrade to WebOS 2, we deal with compatibility issues NOW, but we can rest assured that when we upgrade to a Pre 3, or whatever phone comes out next year from HP, our apps will work.

Fragmentation is always a concern, where new apps will work with the new OS version and not for the old. So, we have the Pre 2...who will write apps for it if the vast majority of the WebOS user base can't use that app due to the OS version?

You know what, you are absolutely right! I love the PRE for how it operates but there were some things that I was like,"Man I wish I could have this that way!" Then homebrew came out! It changed eveything and made the phone moldable! This is something that no phone can do! I will not switch to android because of this! I have to say that you are correct that this is the reason why we love this device and it's operating system!

marz

I can't seem to get the doctor oe vypaass utlity to run.

"those with inclined"???
"caring on" or "carrying on"?

Can we use this on a VZ Pre Plus?

Maybe I'm lost...does this mean we can install 2.0.1 on a Verizon Pre Plus Perhaps?
