Verizon's Tiered Pricing Plans - Details you need to know 48
With Verizon's new tiered data pricing plans coming out on the 7th of July, we've been waiting just as anxiously as you to get all of the details on costs and data allowance that we will have the option of choosing. Our sister site, Android Central, has managed to get all of those details, and a few more, to clear away any remaining mystery about what is happening.
To put it simply, the cost for data is definitely going up from the current $29.99/month for unlimited. In fact, for the same price you now only get 2GB of alloted data available, and $10/GB for every GB you go over your planned amount. They do have some much larger plans available, though, going all the way up to $80 for 10 GB (and same overage costs), that's a cost savings of $30/month if you use the same amount of data in a month but only got the 2GB plan to start (and just paid the overages).
It's important to note a few things, though:
- Those prices are not for tethering or mobile hotspot, which is $20/month for 2GB.
- If you sign up between now and July 7th, you can still get the unlimited data for $29.99
- After July 7th, you cannot choose unlimited for $29.99 for adding new lines or starting a new contract.
- For now, you can keep your existing accounts on the unlimited $29.99 while either staying with the same device or even upgrading in the future to a new device (that could change).
- These changes go for both 3G and 4G device owners.

As of this morning we have been given the green light to start training on the data changes Verizon Wireless is making effective 7/7/11.
$29.99 unlimited data will be discontinued effective 7/7/11
EXISTING CUSTOMERS- That have our $29.99 unlimited data plan WILL BE GRANDFATHERED IN, they will keep their unlimited plan after 7/7/11
EXISTING CUSTOMERS- That current have the unlimited data WILL BE ABLE TO UPGRADE AND KEEP the unlimited data feature (No known end date on this as of this moment)
EXISTING CUSTOMERS- That add lines post 7/7/2011, will NOT be able to choose the $29.99 unlimited data feature
NEW CUSTOMERS- Any customer that sets up service from now, until 7/7/2011 WILL BE ON, AND WILL BE GRANDFATHERED into our $29.99 unlimited data package
NEW CUSTOMERS- Any new customer that set up service AFTER 7/7/2011, WILL NOT be able to choose the $29.99 unlimited plan
BUSINESS DISCOUNTS- Currently our business discounts apply to the $29.99 data plan on the primary line only. Most discounts are 20% despite whatever monthly access discount they have
BUSINESS DISCOUNTS- After 7/7/2011 data discounts will only apply to the $50 and higher data packages on the primary line.
Discount break down ex. of customers with a 20% feature discount on their primary line. ($50-20%=$40/month for 5GB and includes the business e-mail feature)
-- ($20/GB vs. $40/GB+ Business e-mail )
New data pricing for smart phones is as follows:
$30 for 2GB with $10/GB overage
$50 for 5GB (this also includes business e-mail at no additional charge) with $10/GB overage
$80 for 10GB (this also includes business e-mail at no additional charge) with $10/GB overage
So all changes effective July 7th, 2011.
Existing customer KEEP their $29.99 unlimited data plan
If an existing customer upgrades from a feature phone to a smart phone after 7/7/11, they will NOT be able to add on the unlimited data package. They must choose from the new data plans.
Anyone who sets up new service with unlimited data, upgrades from a feature phone to a smart phone with unlimited data, or customer currently on the $29.99 before July, 7, 2011 will be grandfathered in.
These changes also apply to employee plans as well (personal accounts w/work discounts applied)
SO, This is a huge time for us to set our customers up with the right package for them! We only have 14 DAYS remaining for unlimited data, and until the new data pricing takes effect. (14 days to setup new customers w/unlimited data, and customers upgrading from a feature phone to a smart phone)
PLEASE, PLEASE make sure we take advantage of this heads up and get our heavy data users set up on these unlimited plans before they change.
Please call, text or e-mail me any questions or concerns you might have.

To all those who complain about us Sprint Users complaining:
*NOW* do you see why we are so bent out of shape concerning getting a Pre3 now? *NOW* do you se why we don't want to leave Sprint?
Yes? Good.
M.
I'm a Sprint user, but I don't expect Sprint to hold out forever. The exponential increases in data usage will eventually force their hand. Meanwhile, they will use unlimited to try to attract new customers.
Sprint - the NOW Network.
HAHAH This sucks for the people that are not on Sprint.
THIS IS WHY I WILL STICK WITH SPRINT OVER WEBOS. Yes I prefer WebOS over android and IOS, but I am not made of money to all of a sudden start paying $30 more a month and end up getting less than I am on Sprint.
All the Sprint user gloating cracks me up.
You know Sprint will follow next, right?
It's just like data caps on 3G broadband cards. First AT&T implemented a cap, then Verizon followed.
Sprint users crowed about their awesome unlimited EVDO service... and not three months later, Sprint unveiled a cap as well.
With Clearwire ceasing all expansion, it's not going to take long for the Sprint 4G network to get congested. It's already running slow as molasses in the Bay Area.
Sprint will have data caps and fees too. T-Mobile's collapse and liquidation into AT&T virtually guarantees a mobile oligopoly. Perhaps Sprint's rates will be lower than AT&T's and Verizon's, but then again, Sprint's speeds are also much lower (LTE is far, far faster than WiMax).
Was thinking of switching back to VZ for the next webOS device. Now I'll wait it out longer on Sprint and hope something comes soon.
I think the same thing, unless some how, some way, the pre 3 comes to verizon on July 6th or earlier
Nothing in the next 3 months:

Looks like I'll be leaving Sprint soon. I imagine ATT will have the best plan for the Pre3.
Bye, Sprint. Oh, and EFF YOU AND HP FOR NOT WORKING OUT A DEAL!
I've decided if Sprint doesn't at least announce plans for a webOS device by the time the Pre3 drops on Verizon and ATT I'm switching, but my eyes are literally glazing over when trying to decipher these plans. Has anyone done the research on who's gonna have the best/cheapest plan for the Pre3?
I've made the same decision and would love to see PreCentral write an article that compares ATT and Verizon's pricing plans for different types of buyers (single line, Family plan, etc.)
Maybe this is a clever move to get the FCC to block the AT&T/T-Mobile merger.
I don't see how these prices reflect Verizon's cost to provide service at all, especially with all these new LTE towers going up.
Doesn't bother my I currently get the 29.99 plan and will be able to keep it when I upgrade.
Dose this include when you have to sign a new contract to get the discounted price on your new phone? Or is it just when you add a unlocked or full price phone?
When you get a new device on VZW it has no impact on your current plan other than extend it, unless, of course, you are going from a dumbphone or older 2G only smartphone without the current data plan. In those two instances your contract changes to meet the minimum requirement, and thus becomes an "upgrade" contract and is subject to the new terms on July 7th.
If I upgrade my Pre+ to a Pre 2 or Pre 3 after the new plans kick in, it won't impact me at all. Though, if the data plans are shared across your lines, i.e. I can get a 2GB plan and cover both phone lines with it, I could actually save money. I have yet to here how these rates will be on family plans.
Unless you are streaming a lot of video and audio, or downloading a lot of large files, it's pretty hard to go over 2GB with a phone. I typically use around 200-300MB per month and I surf a lot and occasionally download pictures and watch a few YouTube videos. So this still wouldn't impact me.
Whoa, you Americans are really getting screwed by your carriers. I'm paying 6.50€ per month for unlimited data (although speed gets capped to 2G after 200MB, never hit that barrier though, and if I would, I'd be able to upgrade to 2 or 5GB for a couple of bucks more)
Actually it's the same here in Europe. 10€ for 300MB higspeed after that only 64kbits.
Or you pay 20€ for 5GB on top of a very costy plan like 48€ for minutes and data.
There is one carrier a reseller where you'll get 1GB for 9,99€ and after that GB the connection will be slowed down...
Recently I compared Carriers with gaz stations. the advantage is that you'll always be able to fill up your tank with the wished for amount and don't have to enter into long termin monthly gaz agreements. W
Why is it so hard to offer 1GB free at highspeed and offer refills if used up?
Is it greed?
BTW if I buy gaz I can literally burn it, no problem, but if I buy data they are determining the purpose, wtf?
Yes our Kanuck friends up North have been Crying about how Robbers fleeces them. Looks live We caught what has infected them to. What will it take for someone to say enough and either break these corps up or force them to be dumb pipes. Oh wait that won't happen. Too much money to be bri..er donated yes that's it donated to.
Okay, here's my question: What is the point of having these awesome, new 4G speeds if you're capped to a point where you can't use any of the damn services?!
Man, they didn't TRY to make it look like they were lowering prices like AT&T did, this is just a blatant middle finger to customers. Those of you saying you get to keep your unlimited plans? Maybe for one more contract extension. They will eventually force downgrade you.
If Sprint stays on their unlimited road, this could be a huge help for them, as long as they use the money to keep expanding their network. Unfortunately, soon enough they could bump their prices and STILL be a better deal.
They have to get their money back from where from subsidizing all those iPhones and Android smart phones. God knows the tiny number of HP/Palm phones on the market is not hurting them.
But when you are subsidizing 400 dollars per phone and you have several million of them out there that is a lot of money they have to make back over the next two years.
Maybe the answer is to stop subsidizing phones and make people pay full price for them. A carrier could quickly be in the hole in the amount of 800 million dollars they have to recover over that two year period and is just from 2 million subsidized smart phones.
Apple is laughing all the way to the bank as they are getting their full cut up front, it is the carriers who are having to foot the bill long term to make back their money.
I agree.
I guess the free ride is over, and I think thats why is a big deal for people.
I honestly dont think these prices are too bad. But at the end of the day I would actually prefer paying full price for my device upfront.
If more people were forced to pay $600-$800 upfront for a mobile device, then I can assure you there wouldn't be as much traffic on networks as there is now - and there wouldn't be as many people whining about affording $50 data plans (after having put down $800 on a new iPhone or Pre 3).
You wouldn't put $ 800 on a Pre 3...
Just for you to compare:
- An iPhone 4 16 GB does cost 616 € at Amazon.de (Germany)
- The Pre 3 8 GB is shipping to you for 412 €
- An HTC Desire HD does cost 419 €
- A Samsung Galaxy S II costs 528 €
...
As you can see the Pre 3 is priced quite competitively, but this won't show off in the US, as it probably still will be sold for around $ 100 to $ 200, but this also might be a plan, as the carriers will try to sell more of these, as they loose less money on a Pre 3 than on an iPhone 4 or HTC.
WOW WOW at the charge for "Business" email... wow... if this becomes the norm... wow...just wow.
I will stay on sprint and get a frankenpre2 and if ever the pre3 comes to sprint I will get one.
Verizon, this is a terribad idea
I switched to AT&T because of verizon's data plans. My wife and I wanted smartphones, but I couldn't justify paying $30 each for unlimited, when I could pay half that and get 200mb at AT&T. I'm around wifi all day, except when I'm driving, and I'm not surfing online when I'm driving, and wifi hotspots are all over the place now! I have not used more than 60MB in the year I've had my phone, and the month I used 60 was because I downloaded a few youtube videos when I thought I was on wifi, but was actually on 3G. I see this plan driving people on the fence into AT&T land, where they can get the $15 data plan, OR pay $5 less for 2GB
What a slap in the face from Verizon! Business email rates???? You've got to be kidding me!!
They're completely taking advantage of their business customers and I think businesses should stop being exploited by charges from these carriers and make a stand. Fight back the ridiculous rates already!
As a business customer, I currently have a $30 unlimited plan, but now staying with the same $30 plan, I NO longer get business email? (which I'm assuming that's exchange accounts). I have to PAY MORE just to get my work email?
First of all, just capping the same unlimited plan is bad, let alone removing access to your exchange accounts? Paying $10 more a month? You've got to be kidding!
Second of all, data is data - whether I download my gmail or my work exchange account, there's no difference in protocols or anything else! Even AT&T isn't that stupid to ask for that.
...and don't give me the line that bandwidth is tight - Verizon's got one of the largest, if not THE largest backbones across the US. They're giving FIOS customers a cheaper rate per month with faster connections, and there's more infrastructure cost to Verizon for hard-lines to go to your home!
All telcos are completely ripping off customers - I really wish people would make a stand already. Complain!! Complain to them, complain to the FCC, complain to your companies. Outlandish!
Nonsense like this makes me really start to consider going back to a regular phone and carrying an ipod. I've not had more consideration of doing this until now. What the heck am I paying almost two thousand dollars a year for anymore?????
Lawsuit should be that if I'm paying $50 for a data plan, at the end of the month, you should be given back the money/data that was not used.
They have no obligation to provide a service that you can "afford" (whatever that means). But you're right, maybe if enough people complain to the FCC, maybe they'll come save the glorious people and install price caps on wireless plans, and make it affordable for everyone!
Verizon played their hand and you have the information. Now make your choice - you can keep paying, or walk away. Instead of self-righteous complaining, I walked away to Sprint years ago. Thats the best way to show your discontent with their business plan. Just walk away. Much more effective for you, and much more effective in demonstrating your dislike than whining about how you are going tell big government that you dont like what Verizon is doing.
Or alternatively, walk away from the smartphone game altogether as you suggested. If the price increases are so bad that they might break you, then I guess its over?
I'm honestly not surprised. The price for everything has been going up.
I'm sorry, is there an echo in here?
...and you really don't think Sprint will follow suit? They're making the least amount of money, it's only a matter of time.
I do know Sprint will eventually follow suit.
And when they do, i'll either accept the prices if they are within my budget, switch to another carrier that might offer a better plan for the price....or if its that bad, hang up my smartphone.
If prices go up enough that it forces customers away, then I guess Verizon and the others will have to reevaluate their plans.
Thanks Barack!
It's not necessary to announce to world just how incredibly stupid you are. Some things are best kept to one's self.
Wow - so sensitive - Obama supporters have thin skin just like he does. I am proud to have NOT voted for Obama and will be just as proud to NOT vote for him again.
HUH? How does the POTUS play into Verizon's price gouging?
Well, there is a direct correlation. As much as there is one between global warming and the decrease of Pirates. The less Pirates exist, the hotter it gets.

"Business Email" charges are in effect now, and have been since I got my Pre in March 2010. It doesn't mean Exchange accounts, not even corporate Exchange accounts. It appears to be for Blackberrys only, as the account has to be tied to RIM's servers.
So they aren't going to let me and my smartphone get a $10/75MB plan? and the reason is? data is data, isn't it?
My wife grabbed the $15/150MB plan on her Blackberry when Verizon offered a little bit ago. I went in to get it a month or two later and they already canned it. The V rep said "we got rid of it because too many people were going over their data and getting overages". I about split a gut with the idea that V was "looking out" for their users. What I think happened is that people flocked to it and saw their bills drop by $15 without any change to their data usage and that was pure profit that V was losing.
BINGO! That's exactly it. Every time Verizon tells me that they're tired of hearing customer overage charges, I want to just scream.
There's a very simple solution to Verizon's so called "problem" - it's called NO SERVICE. Why is it that smaller providers can stop the service when you run out of minutes, but Verizon plays stupid and all of a sudden just can't figure out how to stop sending Data to a phone?
Funny, if I stop paying my bill, they figure out how to stop sending service to my phone...
Even more fuel to your fire, if so many people were going over their 150MB plan, why couldn't they make a "rate after allowance" for that plan?
"Those prices are not for tethering or mobile hotspot, which is $20/month for 2GB"
Hunh?!? What &%$&^ing difference does it make if my 2 GB comes directly from my smartphone or from my tethered laptop??? 2 GB of data is 2 GB of data, regardless of its source.
To me, that's the clearest single example that this is just a cash grab from a company that thinks they can get away with it.
true!
Is it me or is this just utterly ridiculous! This is unfortunately the future of broad band. Providers will control access, content, rates, etc. They know that the future is the cloud and are trying to position themselves to make a mint as we transition.
Even the recent mergers are not in the public's best interest.
Comcast + NBC = bad for consumer = AT&T + Tmobile
This keeps Verizon out of my choices should I choose to leave Sprint. I guess I'll have to see what AT&T has. If I do leave Sprint, it will most likely be for a iOS. WebOS or iOS (depending on what iOS 5 will actually be once it's released). Android is just not for me at all.
I just bought a nexus s gave my brother my pre-...he pays 40$ a month for unlimited data text unlimited mobile to mobile and 500 minutes to landline phones...I love sprint. I considered switching to Verizon few years ago and saw them differentiating personal email and business email in their surcharges ...I kinda chuckled and wondered how they are still in business. shame on the schmucks that allow themselves to be nickel and dimed.
Well, looks like I'll have to hang on to my Pre Plus until next year, and then re-evaluate staying with Verizon.
wow...this is what we get for expecting instant access to all our stuff in the cloud. Expect more...
I grabbed an unlocked Pre2 and put it on a T-Mobile prepaid. I can purchase 24 worth of data for $1.50 only when I need it. Seems to be the best solution for me today.
verizon is crazy - the clear message is they are discouraging any new subscribers. What idiot thought of that?
Lowell McAdam
I don't see anything wrong with tiered pricing, but this is really just a way to paper over a huge price increase. Wow! And $20 for tethering when you still have to pay for the data, too? That is just gouging the customers.
Only decent thing is that the overage charges are not bad, relative to the plan charges. I would go for the 2 Gb plan and just expect to pay $10-20 overage some months, based on my past usage. But I'd rather just stick with Sprint.....
I'm screwed....I'm averaging 4.5Gb a month in data on Sprint and never tether. I'm on the road with my job constantly streaming podcast and music. It's no way I'm paying those prices on Verizon.

Here at Verizon, we have our engineers working hard every day to come up with new products and services and faster speeds with which to enjoy those products and services....
oh yea, we're also constantly working on creating new ways for you to pay for those products and services.
I don't understand how a wireless company that touts hardware like the Droid series which can "DO" so much "Web browsing, tv/movie viewing, mobile hotspot, etc" and all these other phones that are "data pak required" and then turn around and limit data usage and up the costs involved. REALLY? Verizon? Seriously?
