Video: Adobe Demos Flash Games On webOS 85
We've already seen a demo from Adobe that showed us some of what's possible with Flash 10.1 on webOS, and they've released another video showcasing the gaming capabilities we'll see when the software becomes available. It's slick stuff: double tapping on a flash element makes it go full screen as if you were using a native application, and the Pre appears to be running 3 browser cards with a Flash element quite effortlessly. So not only do we have access to excellent 3D games like Need For Speed thanks to the Plug-in Development Kit, we'll soon have access the hundreds of thousands of Flash based games out there.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Love multitasking.
Glad to see that this demo is on a Sprint Pre (see button). Hoping that companies look to build apps/games for the 256mb Ram variant as opposed to only for the "Plus" coming to VZ...
......if they make it for the plus it will work on sprint the only thing they changed was the ram not the OS

February is going to be a good month for Pre fans.
Gotta agree with this. I'm really looking forward to getting video recording.
More like 2010 is going to be a great year for WebOS fans!
three cheers for palm.hip,hip hooray!
I can't wait, it is going to rock, this will e a great year to own a webOS device
Best of all, we'll finally be able to watch these demos in the Pre browser.
Now the beta just needs to hit the app catalog.
Does this mean the Pre will be able to play video from Hulu.com? Sorry, sort of new at this.
Theoretically, yes. Anything that's Flash-based will run in the Pre's browser now. I don't know if that goes for Youtube, though, since the Pre already has a native app for that.
Actually, they demoed Flash video in the first Flash 10.1 video demo, although it wasn't Hulu. Suffice it to say there's a 99% chance any Flash video site will work.
Hulu, or any other site, may choose to block mobile devices from viewing their content. So we'll have to see whether Hulu is accessible on our phones. If it is, it will be a joyous day indeed!
Every indication is that Hulu will block their content as they do on every other non-pc device. It would also impinge on the Sprint TV offering and license agreements. That said, there are plenty of other streaming sites, and I would love to see a demo of how the Flash for Pre handles these.
Wouldn't they have to use the browser identification stuff to know what device you're on?
...And couldn't somebody here just create a patch that makes the site think that we're in Firefox or something?
I suspect Hulu would block there site. That would be to good to be true. Also the networks wouldn't allow that so easily. Hulu just like anyone else needs permission to rebroadcast the networks shows. I don't think that extends to cell phones by default. Hulu would prob have to pay higher fees which they would rather avoid...or pass along to you.
Those bastards are going to block it like they blocked if for the PS3.. Stingy coporate devils..
I can't wait to play Hamster Launch on my Pre.
Nice game...good graphics and sound...
TO ALL THE IPHONE LOVERS DON'T HATE US JUST LOVE US AND COME AND HOP ON THE BANWAGON,BECAUSE THIS IS JUST A TIP OF THE ICE BURG.LOL
+1
The old Lego block with question mark picture. Hurry up Flash.
anyone notice how when he first shows the pre it has like 70% battery but when he starts demo'ing it has 100%
I was watching for this same exact thing! Good catch.
Seems like normal video editing (multiple clips) to me. The pre-demo time is ~3:35 and the demo time is ~5:00. So very likely it is due to multiple clips (also possible multiple devices were used). Nothing out of the ordinary here.
if this flash thing re-charges the battery while using it... I WANT IT!
Is it me or does this guy love the multitasking capabilities of the Pre....can someone remind me if Iphone can do that?
LOL, it's not you, he is giving props to Pre's multitasking ability and sounds impressed about it.
It would be interesting if the flash can be bookmarked like the webpage..and avoid the need to double tap. That way, you could launch to your favorite flash content direct from the app launch.
If this is what Palm is showing us today, I can't imagine what megatons they will drop to combat the iPhone 4.
Awesome stuff. Really? 100,000s of Flash games?!!!
Another tease video for flash, I am excited about the games, but more excited over the fact that we will be able to finally watch most videos off of any site. Don't know about everyone else but I will be hitting up fancast if hulu doesn't work as well as southparkstudios lol.
I swear to god, if this is another US-only feature, i'm going to use my Pre as a hockey puck.
I'm quite annoyed that us Canadians still have no access to any games thanks to the App Catalog.
The full app-catalog will come to Canada (and europe, where i'am)so don't use the Pre as hockey puck !!! For this thing they created the Touchstone :-)
I feel his pain definitely. The only good 3D game you can get from here in canada is quake from preware, but that's nothing compared to nfs and sims 3... Not to mention 1000+ apps in the states, and only 200+ just an hour or so north of the border. :(
I suspect a whole lot of the problem with getting the catalog up and going outside the States is foreign exchange rates/local trade laws and protections/security/bank verification and a whole slew of other bureaucracy. There was a reason it took a really long time for Apple and Google to launch their app stores...Palm wasn't afforded that time span to hammer out all the bugs before launching, people were demanding apps or threatening to walk before the device even launched. So it came out piecemeal. If Palm released Canada's catalog before England, the English would be pissed at Canada, (and on and on) so might as well roll out all of the above at once and use bureaucracy as a (legit) cover to buy some time and get it right. After all, I doubt you'd want to have a broken app catalog that couldn't validate your hometown bank and borked halfway through a transaction, billed you at a higher foreign exchange rate, or worse.
Perhaps this is a "duh, of course it will work" but I assume sites like homestarrunner.com would also be viewable now?
Related to that will the "zoom in/double tap" be limited to just making whatever the flash content is full screen & not able to zoom into a certain part of it? Or would you have to just do a more manual zoom to a portion of the embedded portion of the page?
Good questions... And what about zooming back OUT of the Flash app? How would you do that? I'm guessing that the embedded Flash wouldn't really know what to do with multitouch - so would the browser just take that gesture over?
The zoom into flash feature is already there, even though flash doesn't work yet. Just back swipe, center button, or up swipe, and you return to card view.
Quite honestly, NONE of those games gets me excited. How about showing us a game like Plants vs. Zombies? Or maybe a Flash-heavy website that we currently have no access to using/viewing at all like www.sesamestreet.org?? (Sorry - I would love to be able to pull this out for my son while in the car or something...)
What would really excite me would be a big augmented reality teaser that could layer video from the camera over a flash movie (or some flash over video, like controls directly on the video feed for tweaking lighting algorithms or color saturation). You could do some real interesting stuff then...
Defend Your Castle, here i come!
Full-screen zoom of flash content? Come on, we all know what this will get used for. Can you say redtube?
You're either a mexican or 12 if you go to redtube..
omg that made my day....sad part is im 16 and kno what redtube is...im asahmed :-(
Hey! if you are my little brother, I am SOOOOO gonna tell your dad to ground you (unless you send me some better sites...)
Seriously having a Veruca Salt moment here......."But I want It NOW!!!"
don't CARE how... I WAN'T IT NOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!
Violet was always my favorite though.

Canabalt, here i come!
Just played with zooming in on a flash plugin window and to get out of the 'black barred' zoom, just do a gesture swipe back and it takes you back to the webpage. It seems to me that they set it up, not just to give the impression of an imbedded window, but to actually focus the gpu resources on the active window being viewed. That would definitely increase the speed. I'm loving the feature. PUT IT UP ON APP CATALOG ALREADY!! I don't care if it forces me to doctor my phone cause it's not ready for beta yet. ;-)
Flash together with Card multitasking will make these the killer-app features of this phone. The flash games are going to be cool and great, but lets face it...aren't we all just waiting for flash so we can show off pr0n sites to our friends???? Just admit it.
Interesting note: In order to zoom out of the flash plugin, the gesture swipe causes the virtual keyboard to pop up unintentionally. At least this is happening to me. Can anybody from WebOSinternals shed light on this? Maybe a fix before the beta?
OH MY GOD! HEXXAGON! I remember playing that game for hours one Windows 3.1. Thought it was so cool back then, lol.
When watching the video I was not exited with the first 2 games, but when he put Hexxagon OMG, all those memories, lol...
"Pre appears to be running 3 browser cards with a Flash element quite effortlessly."
That's because the flash object are inactive until you zoom in on them.
That is fine if it lets me keep them open. I actually think of that as a rather nice feature.
Or am I missing something?
nb
Am I the only one who was at least slightly annoyed that he kept using the Pre with the slider out while playing the games where he wouldn't need a keyboard?
Anyone?
(w00t flash...a technology that I really can't wait until it's obsolete)
Funny but sad and very true story...
I would love to watch this video but every time I hit play it freezes my Firefox browser (running in Ubuntu OS). Maybe after they finish Flash 10.1 for webOS they can do a little more work on Flash for 64 bit linux systems.
Make sure you are using the latest 64-bit native pre-release (not whatever is in the ubuntu repos). I've never had a problem running 64 bit flash on ubuntu.
I am running it. In fact I have been very happy with it as it games be better performance for a couple flash games I like to play once in a while. I am laughing this one off though as I find it hilarious that a video directly from Adobe is messing things up for me.
very nice
Slow movement for adobe. I was expecting some better games for free. And that dude was jizzing his pants talking about flash, definitely paid off by Adobe
STFU
"definitely paid off by Adobe"
Um...he wasn't "paid off" implying some sort of bribe.
He was paid. Directly. Because he is an EMPLOYEE of Adobe who works on the FLASH team!
How do I know that? Because it's the first sentence out of his mouth.
LOL +1
lol, was he paying attention? the adobe logo, the guy saying that he works there, the "adobe tv" watermark...
Bah you guys got to the flaming before me, curse my use of numbered bullets!
This made me chuckle...But then it could be the 5 shots of rum i have had tonight. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Based on your comment I've deduced:
1) You're a spoiled brat (wanting something for free despite someone time and effort and use of the phrase "...jizzing his pants..").
2) Never worked for a large corporation (wanting Adobe move quickly instead of take its time to do it right).
3) Are a moron. It's watermarked clearly, Adobe TV. Of course he's being paid by Adobe.
I just love how he mulit tasked through the games like nothing.. Its WebOS suckassss lol
I would really like to see flash on my phone istead of these demo vids I mean if its ready for release next month then why not release the beta already it does not make much sense to release the beta a few weeks before the final ver comes out with 1.4 unless the one in 1.4 is a beta ver which would realy suck
It's a part of software development. Just because the features they demo work doesn't mean all the features work. They do this so they can have internal testing as the software is developed, shortening the final test phase. The beta they release should be part of this final test phase since testing it on hundreds of target machines is a huge step. Also, the release date of 1.4 hasn't been set so if there is a large issue that comes out of beta they will have nearly 1.5 months to fix it before shoving it on phones. The beta is voluntary (at your own risk), the final release may not be.
Thanks for writing that.
Now if you could only go back and copy/paste into every post that asks about why a patch wasn't implemented as a part of WebOS 1.xx.xx
:)
nnb
then please explain to me, why there was not -- more or less -- one single update, that does not cause some problems?
This guy is attractive! AND he has large hands..hmmm...
and on one of the large hands is apparently a wedding band, :P
Word. Me too. I can palm a beach ball f'real.

I have Firefox 3.0.17 installed running FlashPlayer version 10,0,42,34 on 64bit Ubuntu 9.04 : I can not see this video. In my eyes that spells fail..
ZOMFG! Now I can double tap to view Flash files in proper full screen mode!!? Yes!!!!
Believe it or not, I've been looking forward to the Flash Player 10.1 on the Pre more than anything else. Yes, more than 3D games and video recording. In fact, the webOS and the prospect of Flash Player 10.1 is what compelled me to get the Pre in the first place. Now the possibilities are endless. Thank you ADOBE! And of course Palm.
Also many thanks Adrian for doing not one but two video demonstrations of Flash on the Pre to keep me from losing my mind. I feel like giving him a kiss (even though I'm a guy) :P lol
Flash Player working without a glitch on any Linux platform is good enough for me, Am I about to eat years of crow?
i wonder if after this is released, there will be a way (homebrew or not) to save the SWF files to your phone and just launch them whenever you want...
The video is really fantastic, thank you so much for sharing such an interesting post with us.. I really appreciate this stuff..

yay can't wait anybody knows when we get the beta version
