Video Tour of the Veer and the Pre 3 42

by Derek Kessler Thu, 10 Feb 2011 12:03 am EST

We decided to join all the developers ogling the new HP hardware, the Veer and the Pre 3, so we grabbed a quick video of the standard demo that HP employees are showing for both of these new phones. We have a look at the main features of webOS 2.x (not including Exhibition) as well as a quick hardware overview of both devices.

Enjoy!

Whoa, video/audio not sync'd at all. But that Veer is incredibly fast... I'm extremely impressed. If I didn't use my phone so much for surfing/reading, I'd be down for one. I'm afraid my eyes would go even quicker than normal.

The veer does look really fast, but I wish it was the pixi form factor.

Yeah, this looks like a great phone for my 6 year old niece.

What sucks is that these devices are going to get old fast if they are released in the summer.

These specs for this lineup is pretty amazing, especially since the veer is almost twice the power of the original pre, and it's much smaller, but they needed to be released NOW to have a fighting chance.

It was the same problem for the original pre. They waited too long to release it, and they suffered the consequences for it.

I can't get excited about a phone that goes to AT&T or Verizon. Or T-Mobile. I guess what I'm saying is that I'm not planning on leaving Sprint. HP, please make it happen: make Sprint-webOS babies. I want your babies.

The Veer shouldn't have happened. The Pre 3 is perfect for those that like a medium to smaller sized phone. What about those that like phones that have 4+ inch screens? Right now I have an Android phone because that's what it has, a 4 inch screen. I love, love, love webOS but I need a 4 inch screen to come back to webOS. You hear that HP. I need a 4 inch screen to be swayed back to webOS. Well, that's not entirely true, the TouchPad will be mine so I guess I will have a webOS device "in the coming months".

I'm guessing you don't NEED a 4 inch screen. You WANT a 4 inch screen.

Millions of people doing just fine out there with 3.5 inch screens and plenty of people thinking 4 inches is just too big. But this whole thing has become a new kind of class warfare - those who have cell phones and those who don't, those who have Android/iPhone versus those who don't. It's all about the bigger screen the faster processor the largest app store. What about quality, interconnectivity, productivity, socialization? 4 inch screens are just a stat that can be spouted to say that we keep up with a trend, bigger, faster, louder.

Kinda the American way!

When your mom told you size didn't matter, she was just trying to spare your feelings.

I went to the Evo after the PRe (minus).
Same here...

I NEED a 4"+ screen atleast.
I can't even get an ipod touch cause 3.5" is so small. You don't understand until you get a bigger screen.

I also want quality and all those other things you mentioned.
You think they're just a stat when you are having a 3.2" screen all your life. Once you get a bigger screened phone, you wouldn't want to go back.

Anyway I'm still looking to get the Pre3 for my siblings. I just wouldn't get it.

A 3.6" screen is a medium to smaller sized phone? Maybe, but it is big enough as shown by the success of other phones w/smaller screens.

As for those that like phones, w/4+ inch screens--do you think these are the last phones HP will ever make? W/the investment and emphasis they are putting on webOS--even on PCs--I believe they will have a good variety of phones to include 4+ inch and slabs vs sliders in the future. The real question is will they provide phones to all carriers?

You just demonstrated that people have a wide variety in what they look for in a phone. I wish people would respect that vs thinking only about what they want.

pss pss pss pss pss pss

didnt see any carrier signal. is it even a phone?

just joking of course.

it might have gotten better coverage if the just announce these things at ces.

feb 9 announcement just seemed to piss people off even more

3 Thoughts....

1. I cant believe she made a big deal about the mirror...aka they told her to make a big deal about the mirror

2. The veer is blazing fast

3. why did she spend all of her time talking about the little phone instead of the big bad ass one (I am guessing that the veer is closer to finished. During Engadget's hands on the Pre3 looked slugy)

There were a few veers out for us to play with. And yes it was alot faster than my overclocked pre minus. It does seem more "Finished" then the Pre 3. only the floating reps had the Pre 3's. They would let you touch them and briefly hold them but there was not much more you could do with them. They were also demoing the tablets but were making it very clear that they are not a final product. So I would go with the idea that the Veer is done, the tablet is close and the pre 3 is a very early version.

Thanks for the reply! I got the same impression from the live blogs and the demo's, but they might have been better off not showing the pre3 running on video. The performance was not were it needed to be at least for Engadget's hands on.

That being said I hope it comes to sprint and if it does I will own one.

So much for not announcing products that aren't ready to ship. Is anyone at HP truthful or do they all live in fantasy land?

Just for the sake of argument, I will state the fact that my girlfriend LOVES the mirror on the back of her Pre-. LOVES. She uses it all the damn time to check her makeup.

It's a good thing, believe me.

makes no sense to post this video other than youtube seeing most of us are on WebOS 1.5

Wait wait wait. Did she indicate that they changed the usb power connector? So, when I got my Pre Minus I had to go from mini to micro usb chargers. Now I'll have to go from micro to some new magnetic charger thingy? Will this still serve as the data port as well? I really don't want to have to buy all new chargers again.

Luckily, the Veer works on the touchstone. And that new charger cable *probably* comes free with the phone.

Oh, and this cable probably has a standard USB Type A on one end too.

i feel like he lost his train of thought because he was too busy looking at her chest (3:55)

Otherwise, cannot wait to upgrade!

I thought it was just me who noticed him losing concentration! haha

Aww man... corporate reps... :-)

So the mic is on teh keyboard, thus have to whip out the keyboard on phone calls???

That sucks i just switched to AT&T to day from sprint and bought my wife a pixi plus and a pre plus for me oh well im always a day late

well the veer is running on AT&T right now... The demo's that were on the floor were live on AT&T.

Good info!

I just sent Derek some good pic's of you filming this... :)

LOL! Love how the camera guy is focusing on her chest at 3:55. Haha and he was also wondering why he was struggling to say "the small phone." CLASSIC!

GET WITH THE PROGRAM BUDDY!!!

What chest? he was probably trying to find it.

seriously? you must be super picky.

It's a small phone. Mic on the screen won't be positioned correctly. Hence its location on the extended keyboard is a must.

Looks great, btw. I wish my Pre were as responsive though.

I have been a daily Pre-Central reader since launch day of Palm Pre. I would consider myself to be a power user in my business of Palms over the years. I am now leaving this Precentral site.
My problems with HP/Palm and my solution as follows:
1. Never did /don't plan to deliver flash for old Pre- as promised.
2. Never came through with any office software...still only a promise.
3. Not keeping update promise for Pre- etc.
4. Not releasing new Pree 3 etc until summer...broken promise by new HP CEO.
5. Sprint never got any any update hardware unit for Pre-, even after my Pre was end-of-lifed!
6. Web OS 2.0+ is obsoleting Classic Palm OS emulator after I paid $60 for it to work on both our Pre-'s so I could have Pocket Quicken and Datebk 6 with goosync keep working and hotsyncing since there is no app like either of them on any other platform.
Pimlical (Datebk 6) author was burned by WebOS and never plans to deliver product for them and his 25 years plus of writing the best rated Palm OS app ever says they are destined to fail. He now has Pimlical beta for Android and desktop...fully syncing with built in calendar data-base and Google calendar OTA.
7. App catalog has stale mated with new business power user apps being released over the past 6-12 months.

"Hope deferred maketh the heart sick" and my hear is sick to HP and Palm, even after having used them for my main handheld OS since the days of the M515 and before (15 years ago?).

I love Web OS over any OS I have ever used and I was an original release day Pre owner. ....After about 6 months of OS updates to original Pre, overclocking it to 1Ghz and using Preware with lots of tweaks it was a super nice OS.

2 Weeks ago I decided to use my way overdue upgrade to test run an Android Samsung Epic (basically same as EVO but with hardware keyboard) and planned on returning it if HP released a new phone that was ready to purchase.

Not impressed. Phone not ready for purchase. And in addition to above, app store is not growing with good apps...I have since found MANY very helpful apps in Android store that are nowhere for Pre! In fact, it seems every powerful, useful app I have ever found for my iTouch is already available for the Android OS.
I have almost replaced every Pre App I had with one as good or better on Android (working with Android Developer to make Contact Look Up Fast do everything Google contact search did for Pre...only almost instantly with my 3K contacts due to how it pre-indexes the Epic database.)

I have iTouch, Windows Mobile (for a single business application) and now an Android 2.2 Epic (hacked ROM). Android is the next best OS UI after WebOS. Android app "Smart Talkbar" is not as fun as Pre card multi-tasking, but it works almost as well and I am hoping to help developer to improve it slightly. (Even has swipe gesture to pull up running app icons.)
BTW, Android must also have a good auto talk killer like "Free advanced Talk Manager" that kills whole bunch of background apps always trying to start themselves and ignores your regular apps every time phone is turned off to make android a nice os.
I also do not like how even with Android 2.2 micro 16GB SCHC card is not really integrated like Pre Plus 16GB space is when it comes to app storage. Some apps do not move to SD card without breaking their widgets, some will not allow you to move them without a third party app to help them over and it is still just hard to free up enough of the Epic RAM/ROM to keep it running fast with all that wants to constantly start itself up in the background....this all discourages purchasing apps as freely as one is able to do with Palm Pre.

I have found solutions to above problems though now, and by the way, this Android Epic has a very powerful virtual keyboard swype function that is really powerful. I have not found myself using the pull-out landscape keyboard yet!

I am liking this Epic better every day! I have an Epic dock that works basically like Pre charging dock with exhibition. Epic speaker and screen are much better than Pre. USB charge door has a nice sliding cover and hardware is built much better and lots of case choices. Android notifications (without 3rd party apps) is almost as good as WEB OS notifications...very much like Web OS Touch Pad really!

I can do things like this with Epic:
1. Download funny Youtube videos sent to me in emails for better play or saving,
2. control iTunes and Sonos wirelessly,
3. open and edit about any document out there from my master dropbox, email etc...even if the file is zipped!
4. scan barcodes,
5. run evernote much better and more reliable than pre with offline note storage,
6. Log-me-in works well,
7. DolphinHD browser has tabs etc and feels like a desktop browser,
8. Google Sky Map and other google apps are all much better than on Pre,
9. Epic has total voice control for about anything or any web search including making phone calls,
10. much better Olive Tree Bible reader app than Pre Bible apps,
11. Pimlical with adjustments gives me my old Datebk 6 back,
12. Deafault gmail app loads much faster than overclocked pre and k-9mail allows copy and paste mail,
13. OTA Wifi sync with iTunes using double twist....
14. even apps like Baby Bump and TuneInRadio and Weather bug are on Android...most cheaper than Web OS versions with more options built into them.
15. Run anMoney which with a little more QIF manual syncing, effectively replaces Pocket Quicken...at least it is the next best thing since it does all Pocket Quicken did and more (except for auto syncing with Quicken desktop.)
16. Free Luncher Pro (along with Smart Taskbar app) give same control I had with Pre launcher tweaks and replaces built in Samsung Sense type of launcher.
17. WiFi tether that actually works better and more reliable than anything I could ever get hacked onto my Palm Pre. USB tether is built into all Android and works without even rooting!

Bottom line, my Android is feeling quite a bit like Web OS! Lots of the above customizations are available right out of Android Market without any rooting or ROM flashing!

Just curious, has anybody else noticed that HP's website says the Pre 3 supports 802.11 a/b/g/n?

I do like the additions of the magnet and touch to share. I want those and touchstone capability to be adopted industry wide. Hope hp doesnt have or enforce patents on this stuff, or else i hope they lisense the techology out.

I love this video because now I have two new memes stuck in my brain.

1. "Chicken salad." Where was she going with that? This will be my standard "Just type" example from now on. Especially when I'm at Safeway.

2. "HP Small Phone." Period.

Oh, we named it "Pre 3" because the Pre name has such positive customer name recognition. WTF?? Customers are going to think it is the same pos device that came out 2 years ago. We wanted a Phoenix & we got the Hindenburg. Guess I'll hold onto my Pre(-) until upgrade time then decide on either Android or iOS - sigh.....

I just dont get it with this phone, they should have just put this into the Pre 2 and made it the small the Pre 3 come out in a month the medium and the tab this summer the large

Has anyone asked these people about battery life on the 3 new devices?

What happened to Leo saying that they would not announce devices that would not be available beyond a few weeks of the announcement?

Cant someone sue HP for claiming that they wont announce products are not ready to be shipped? I MEAN SERIOUSLY? WTF IS THAT ABOUT? SOMEONE PLS SUE THEM
