VisualBoyAdvance Hits webOS with a Vengeance 67

by Jason Robitaille Fri, 29 Jan 2010 7:04 pm EST

VisualBoyAdvance for webOS has come a long way since it was started on January 14th. For those unaware, VisualBoyAdvance (VBA) is an opensource Gameboy, Gameboy Colour and Gameboy Advance emulator available for numerous operating systems. DtzWill, with the aid of people at WebOS-Internals, has sucessfully ported and enhanced it for webOS. It's up and available now in Preware

If you're interested in trying it out, be sure to read though the wiki page thoroughly. The wiki lists all the current keybinds you'll ever need. And if you don't like the default keybinds, you can customize them in-program as you see fit.

Currently, all Gameboy/Gameboy Colour games work 100%, though Gameboy Advance games still have some speed issues. Generally, turning off sound (orange+z) will improve framerate. Also, it's recommended to enable auto-save (orange+a) so if you close VBA or VBA crashes (unlikely) you'll be able to go right back from where you left off.

Best of all, the recently-released version 1.1.1 introduces full skinning support! Shipped with the VBA packages includes 4 skins to choose from, but more skins are being created and posted in the VBA PreCentral thread. Here are 2 examples of skins:

Sleek, stylish, and very functional. Try VisualBoyAvance out for yourself. You won't regret it.  Please note, however, neither PreCentral nor WebOS-Internals support piracy of illegal roms; do not post roms or links to rom websites in the PreCentral forums.

Thanks to everyone who send this in

cool

Freaken sweeeet =) I have the NesEm (demo) but the 40kb limitation kinda sucks so I'm stoked to install VBA. Gosh...and everyone else is caught up with Android? WebOS will soon make all the skeptics eat their 'statistics.'

I do hope this comes to The 'Log when the PDK is released.

Since when is it "The WebOS"? It's just "WebOS".

Ya...I have been wondering the same thing for months. We don't say "The Windows Mobile" or "The Android."

It's been that way since it's been PALM, i-pod, iTouch, MAC, and TREO. You just do your own thing like it's normal. ;)

technically yea, it's just a bad habit of mine as I'm aware of the other webOS's before (by other companies) and tend to use "the" to specify I'm referring to the Palm specific one. I've updated the article to fix it ;)

The rewrite looks great.

wow, everyone is a critic! Relax dude & cut Jason Are some slack. He's a WebOS all-star in my book (webosQI and many other contributions) so cut the man some slack. Unless you are one of those that need to point out every flaw in everyone else.

Thanks for the post JR. It looks awesome.

Slack in grammar on a site which primary presents content as text? That's a slippery slope any journalist or writer welcomes help in avoiding.

Palm webOS and webOS have been used so much they've become standards when referring to Palms webOS. Regardless, adding "The" works grammatically, but not only breaks convention it also doesn't read smoothly.

I'm not nitpicking or pointing out flaws in him as a person; I'm just giving my take as a meaningless commenter on a website. =)

Anybody got a napkin so I can wipe off this drool?

loll

very awsome guys....I'm hoping that a NES emulator will be available on preware soon also any heads up on a NES emu?

Search the forums for NesEm

Why stop at the NES. I'm hoping for a SNES emulator because there is nothing better than the original Mario Kart.

A better title would be "Hits the Pre" than "Hits webOS."

There are two devices running webOS these days... And only one of them will run this!

well, 4 devices technically ;) Pre and Pre Plus can run 3d games

Actually there are 4 devices and 2 will run it. :)

I've been using it since it first hit preware and I haveto say it has come along and is 100% better than when it first hit. I can't stand reaching for the L button and taking my thumb off of the cursor so I have to play with the key bindings I like meaning I have to play it with the keyboard out. :(

not to sound dumb or anything...but.....can any one explain how to get this working i really want to play mario kart..lol i downloaded it off preware but still doesnt work help anyone??? mayb a step by step?? :)

+1

i would too.

As mentioned in the article, the wiki tries to do a decent job of explaining how to use the app. I know it's a lot of text, but I promise we tried to make it as short as we could and still have all the answers :).

Anyway, take a look here: http://www.webos-internals.org/wiki/Application:VBA#Adding_ROMS

That is a short explanation of how to put roms on the app. You can get free roms using the links near the bottom for great games such as "Another world", "Anguna", etc.

Happy gaming.

its funny because this app is no longer in preware.... smh

(I'm the author of VBA for webos)

I'm not sure what you're talking about. It is in preware, and has been for a while now.

The fact that you say "no longer" is of concern--the only reason it might not show up is if you run a device that doesn't support it or a webos version

Another possible reason the OP (ergarcia1) couldn't find it on Preware is that he/she turned off the feed VBA comes from (i.e., the Webos-internals feed).

@ergarcia1 In Preware click on the menu item 'Manage Feeds' and scroll down to 'Webos-internals'. Makes sure it is switched to 'On'.

Then click on 'Update Feeds' from the menu. Afterwards, click 'List of Everything' and begin typing 'Visual' to search for the app. You should then see 'VisualBoyAdvance'.

Just to let you know. I don't see VBA in Preware either. Running 1.3.5.1 and preware feed for webos-internals is on.

Doesn't this violate Nintendo's copyright on these games? (as well as other publishers)

Emulators are completely legal and acceptable, as far as I know. It's copies of protected games that's illegal--to this end, I suggest you get copies of public domain roms, linked from the wiki. As mentioned in the article above, no one at precentral or webosinternals promotes piracy, and we will not have discussion of acquiring illlegal roms.

While I'm no lawyer, it's generally considered acceptable to play games you own--cart dumping tools can be acquired for cheap (~$7 last time I checked) and can be used to make copies of games you own, which you can play in emulators like VBA.

Hope that clarifies.

If you have suggestions for a better control scheme, please join the discussion in the official VBA thread (linked above in the article). I'm particularly open new ideas and part of the reason we've come so far is from community feedback.

dtzwill iz da MAN!!!! just do y'all know...

Now bow...

as i read the comments.. i realized this early on and dropped my head to the floor as a sign of respect.
much respect dtzwill.

relly cool the controls are a pain in the ass and the sound is really choppy and the screen size could be bigger but this still kicks ass just my 2 cents

Other than speed the other two (screen size and controls) are about as completely customizable as you could imagine. Lots of time was put into enabling the user to be able to play the way they choose--so I encourage you to read the wiki and the VBA thread and in no time you'll be using a control scheme that makes you happy.

If you can't find a good solution using the tools/ideas in the wiki, or are having problems, please post to the VBA thread (linked in the article above).

I took a quick glance through the wiki and have one question. The controls are only able to be mapped through the keyboard and not the touchscreen, right? Could we hope to see some kind of touch controls implemented?

Anyway, thanks for this. It looks great and will try it out when I get home.

There are touch controls since 1.1 i think. try using "0" to toggle the different modes. (orange+@)

The ability to create custom controls in-game is "limited" to keyboard support, yes.

Touchscreen controls have been available for a while--they're referred to as "skins".

As mentioned in the article above, VBA ships with a few skins, and you can change which skin you're currently using on the fly.

If you want to create your OWN skin, it's a fairly straightforward process (just edit a tiny plain-text file, and create the image for your controls). So while you can't customize touchscreen controls on the fly, you can use the skin configuration and flexibility to create controls that suit you best, and that seems to be working well for most people.

A careful look at the controls section of the wiki is most useful--it contains information on how to activate/control/change some of the more complicated and advanced features of VBA that are usually things people ask about right away :).

Anyway, have fun and hope this helps.

sorry but I posted from my pre and everytime I refreshed it was posting my post over again I didn't mean to spam at all.

Nice.....Pokemon :)

I suggest you get copies of public domain roms and by the phone to play the game of aion kinah

Does anyone have an idea how long it will take 4 GBA to be fully functional. The frame rate make some games choppy.

Thanks guy for all the Hard Work, itz nice to finnally be able to play without having to use a Debian Croot

I have searched for this app and it is no longer in preware. only three downloads come up when searching key word visual.

I had visual boy advance on my pre and mistakenly deleted it. Now I don't see it on preware at all. What can I do to get it back?

get it from web OS quick install (its in WebOS-internal feeds(pre)), or check your downloaded apps on preware maybe its there delete it and then download it again

This actually happened to me as well. Double check if its installed in the Pre's 'Launcher', if its there uninstall it then reinstall from Preware. It did not show up for me even still and required me to turn of the phone and back on.

I want to play Mario Kart as well is there a link to that also.

This works AWESOMELY for GB and GBC games! I haven't tried it with GBA games (yet). Please keep up the great work, and maybe consider branching into other emulators (Nintendo, Genesis, etc.). I am going back to the days of megaman and pokemon, but in a convenient package. THANK YOU!

I want to play Mario Kart as well is there a link to that also.

the games run super slow the ones i tried are pretty much unplayable at this point.ill stick with my psp for emulators for now. sega cd, snes, nes, turbo grafix, neogeo cd pretty much full speed on the psp so there is hope for this stuff on the pre as it has more processing power then the psp just 333mhz when its uncapped. good start though

can anyone tell me where to download pokemon at?

good news i found a rom for pokemon gold it works perfectly the link is http://www.coolrom.com/roms/gbc/3998/Pokemon_Gold.php have fun cause i know i will :)

I would suggest you take this down quickly. Its sorta a no-no to put up links to ROMs that are not legal to download. Its not hard to get them anyway.

best website for roms is www.coolrom.com you can download all the games that are for gameboy color anc gameboy adavance they work perfect with my pre

Where do you download the themes?

I can't get this to show up in Preware. I've updated my feeds many times and they are all on including WebOS-Internals. I've searched, browsed, everything, and can't find it.

I tried following the directions and it said to open it up for the first time and it will creat the necessary files. But nothing happens when I do that but it shows up on my computer with the vba files. Do I just load roms into the rom folder cuz that wasn't very clear either...it says do not place roms within the folder so how are you supposed to put them in? Click and drag? Please help me

how do you download the skin.??
