Voice-activated GPS coming to Pre 3? 22
by Jonathan I Ezor Thu, 10 Feb 2011 10:09 am EST
Sometimes it pays to read the footnotes: On Palm's new Pre 3 promo page, it says,
"Rushing from a meeting to a dinner reservation? Use GPS to find the fastest way.4"
And what does footnote 4 tell us?
"4. Within wireless coverage area only. Voice-activated, as-you-go, turn-by-turn directions sold separately."
(our emphasis)
As with much about yesterday's announcements, the specific details of this new feature (vendor, pricing, etc.) are lacking. Still, we're excited about the possibility, and look forward to finding out more.

Ah yes the promises of features. I don't think anyone is holding his or her breath on this. Remember when Palm told us that the original Pre would be capable to send an email to people we were running late to in our calendar appointment. Or remind us when we might be late to an event based on GPS location of where we were?
Uh huh.

it will come . .. sometime after apple makes the gps activated by thought.
or it will work and never be released until the pre5
Aside from the actual article, why does my rss feed keep bring up Precentral articles that are 5+ days old? It does it at least once a day. I have at least 4 more rss feeds and none of them do this.
I believe the Pre has done this from the beginning. In exchange anyway. When my meeting reminder activates, there is an option to email meeting attendees. Never tried the GPS location based events though.
but it DOES do this! Its not tied to GPS as is "implied" but if you have your calendar connected to your work's Exchange account and (here's the issue) the work appointment was created in Outlook, when the meeting reminder goes off, my Sprnt Pre- presents me with a buton to send a prefabricated "running late..." Email to all of the particpants.
Found that promise that never was:

Someone on Precentral or and HP/Palm needs to be fired immediately. Your destroying your customers. There no such information to back up a statement such as this until someone demonstrates this application. There are already GPS application on almost all Palm devices. Turn by Turn Directions sold seperately. It's official. I've seen what good you can do but ultimately you have turn the best of yourselves into a gimmick.
Most of my phone seems as if it is in Beta and your telling us there are no future updates? It is un-heard of. The only devices you actually have on the market your not supporting? I mean you can really say that 2.0 should have been developed for the Palm Pre (720mhz) and then placed on a more powerful device with possible small additions. You've sold less then 1000 Pre 2. yet your turning your back on the only market that developers will produce new applications for? This is nuts. I mean this is out of the we are a business your a consumer district ( as everyone tries to swish around). This reminds of my step mother drug addict half son. Its we want our consumers to bad, and then we want to be friends with them. CRAZY SHIT!
"sold separately" ummm, it's FREE on Android!
I can't help but be pissed. I really don't like a lot of shit that I'm hearing but I'm so desperate for a webOS handset that I continue to listen...
Lets quit talking about what HP has said is coming. So far they haven't given us anything! They keep telling us what is coming but it just never gets here or they are just plain lying.
I am really quite upset about 2.0 or 2.1 on my Pre and do not even look at my phone the same any more.
The tone of comments on all Pre sites has changed dramatically.
Contact HP and tell them what you think about this.
I will never trust them again!

i intend to make my statements to HP only with my wallet.
Android already does this
will it be on Verizon's network? Good luck getting the gps to work! Still trying to get the pre plus a-gps to work.
wow calm down ya grumpy grumps. The sprint pre- has done this since day one. Go ahead and fire up sprint nav. It say "speak address". Extra fee = carrier specific apps.
Wow, I've been a Sprint Pre user since day 1, June 6, 2009. I consider myself a pretty capable user of the device and I use Sprint Nav all the time, and I had never noticed that! Thanks for the tip!!
To be fair, it's not quite that simple, you have to press the "Call it in" button, and it's actually a phone service that adds the spoken address to the Recent Places list. Still, pretty impressive.
Also, one of the great things about the Pre, as opposed to an iPhone, any of the Android phones, or even a full GPS, as a portrait slider (Dell Venue Pro would also be good for this and of course Blackberry understands this perfectly), is how easy it is to type one-handed while driving w/o even looking at the phone. That's how I always enter the address, then set the phone on the Touchstone on my dashboard for turn-by-turn spoken instructions as nice as any separate GPS.
Great. An as-of-yet unreleased application is touted to have features on an as-of-yet unreleased phone on an as-of-yet unannounced carrier, to be available for an as-of-yet unannounced price.
AWESOME!
Hi all,
For what seems the millionth time in the past day, I am going to again say...PLEASE CALM DOWN....
1. Voice activated GPS is made for me...the only thing better would have a GPS brain implant!
2. It is a phone, not a sickly child....when my nephews were 4 & 6 they acted better than too many of you!
3. Most of the grumping and carrying on, is b/c many of you are saying, if it doesn't do this or that I am leaving...people please keep in mind that webOS & Palm almost died last year...give it a little time....for heavens sake I am still using a 28 month old centro.....
BTW for all of you who are so upset that it there isn't a slab phone...HP has made it clear there will be other products and annoucments...in fact they did say they would make announcements with product roll outs about every other month for part if not much of this year...I am pretty sure there will be a slab type phone...
For all of you carrying on about 4G...at this time none of the cell companies have yet to actually meet the technical specs to be called 4G...they are just milking the public while they announce further and further delays...in fact here in my area, which is suburban to Orlando, FL...if I bought a quote "4G" phone tomorrow, they would charge me extra for 4G service.
a. supposed 4G service doesn't exist in my area...
b. What is being passed off as 4G is basically 3G at $10 a month more....
Frankly I could care less about it having 4G, until there is actual 4G service anywhere in the USA!
For more info on how people are being duped and ripped off about 4G...go to the following link:

just take a deep breath and relax!
Thank you and take care,
Jay
If you have sprint theyre going to charge you extra even if you dont have 4g so your point is moot.
OH MY GOD VOICE CONTROL!!!!!
.......revolutionary.......
Not only has the tone of the comments changed the number of comments has changed also. It used to go on for pages now you get maybe 1 full page.
HP Needs to license webos that would be big news. Crying wolf at this point is no longer news.
Inconceivable!
Seriously though, I can't imagine this working very well. I have yet to use a single Voice Control product that works like it should.. maybe it's my accent..
