VuiVision brings streaming live TV to Pre 72

by Derek Kessler Sun, 11 Oct 2009 12:11 pm EDT

Palm Pre TV

So lets say you really want to watch The Office when it airs, but you can’t get to a TV because you’re on the bus. Set your DVR and watch it when you get home, right? Well, you could do that, or you could watch it right now. VuiVision.com, which is currently in public alpha testing, offers streaming live television over the invisible tubes that connect your phone to the internet. And by streaming live television, we mean you can get the currently broadcasting shows from NBC, CBS, and ABC. Amusingly, the streaming works fine on the Pre but doesn’t work on the iPhone. As this is alpha stage testing, it’s not exactly perfect (for example, for a while I was getting NBC when I tried to watch CBS), but it is free and live TV. On your phone. Cool, eh?

Thanks to Lastdaysoldier for the tip!

cool
ps 1st

Your point?

Point being cool story and first to post....
What is your issue?

His issue is that your announcement of being the first to post is the equivalent of celebrating the achievement of being the first in a group to get to the bathroom in the morning. That is, we are happy for you if it truly brightens your day, but we really, really don't care.

lol...you guys are crazy.congrats on being the first in the group to get to the bathroom in the morning.lol

hehe Thanks....Will not do that anymore!
Damn net cops lol

"First" with a pointless post, is the online form of the Special Olympics gold medal. Congrates fryrt, we know this your crowning achievement. Now put your helmet on and go watch TV.

Thanks predog...I will

ahaha..........fryert............you just got pwnd.......

I have been waiting for this. I hope they get FOX

What exactly does Sprint TV include? How would these compare?

Sprint TV is mostly little video clips similar to what you'd find on You-tube. However, most networks have a recent episode of 2 or 3 dramas available for download. Nothing approaching live content, but something to watch if you have a decent signal.

It'd be great if you guys revisit this story after November 1st when they begin beta testing.

Wow! Thats great! So many cool things on our phone.

tv looks good to me. great find

This is awesome. I'm stuck at work and i'm still able to keep up with my football. That just makes it that much better! Now excuse me while I go rub this in all of the faces of the iphone owners in this place.

Not bad, I like it.
Maybe this will be the kick in the butt Sling needs to get a Web OS player out?

Sling paused, and others will take their place. Sling users are Dish-appointed that they didn't maintain that aggressive cutting edge spirit, but others are taking their place. The failure to even announce an intent is indicative that they are way behind.

wait... if this thing can get TBS ill pay ANY price they slap on it

Maybe I'm a conspiracy theorist, but I'm willing to bet the reason this doesn't work on the iPhone, is so that iPhone users don't destroy the bandwidth they have and put the same strain on them that AT&T is dealing with.

I've had CBS on for a few minutes and the sound goes out.
I have it on my Touchstone.

will be interesting to see how it works compared to sprint TV(hopefully better)

i seem to get error playing file error half the time looks good though

I don't have sound where I am (upstate Ny) but but i've had the giants game on for about 10 minutes now. Picture gets a little fuzzy, some hesitation. but all in all not bad for an alpha test. Picture looks a bit better than that offered on the stock NFL app. imo

Would be awesome to have sling player for the Pre. Hopefully the guys over at sling punch the accelerator on this.

I am in upstate NY and have sound..but have the same fuzzy picture and hesitation..

yeah..i have 3 slingmobile accounts and switched to 2 pre's and htc tough pro.. so havent gotten use of them..this looks like good news for us slingers..

how do you get it? Is it an app?

It's not an app. Just load vuivision.com in the browser, and click on which network you want to watch.

Watching golf on NBC right now. Video is good, sound mostly not there.

Great find. Already bookmarked. Thanks!

The sound seems to go out after a few minutes. I'm watching CBS and I'm in Los Angeles, it doesn't matter where you are. Oh well, that's why this is in alpha testing. Cool site tho, would be great if they teamed up with an app developer and made a beta app for watching live tv.

There is already a website for it. Why do they need an app?

works great watching the game on it for about 20 min now my pic looks good to =) sweet site thanks for the heads up

The video doesn't seem to start when I have WIFI on. Works with EVDO. Anyone else notice this?

Mine is working fine over wifi.

Weirdly, it doesn't seem to work when I'm connected to WiFi... Only over EVDO...

Hmm... hear 30 miles south of San Francisco, the video is not very clear and the sound goes on and off. Hoping it will improve in November. It is a great concept.

Skip the giving out of your e-mail address and just get the goods. The terms of service for the website was a copy and paste and not completely filled out.

YES!! YES! YES! YES! just what i needed, i work security in the afternoon which means i have to record all the lakers games.

Go Spurs!!!

I get the Pittsburgh Detroit game on University TV, and I'm seeing a different game on the vuivision. Sound cuts out, and it also doesnt work with wifi enabled. I also can't see the score very well. I'm anxious to see where they go with this. It's worth a couple bucks imo.

Mine cracks like Sprint TV. Is there a fix to that and they just havnt fixed it yet, or is that never going to change?

Don't get too excited or attached, only a matter of time until the copyright police shut this down. This violates any number of laws.

I just turned on my real TV, and there seems to be an 8 second delay for the pre. I suspect this is due to the compression the servers have to do to get the bandwidth of the stream down for EVDO.

This is sweet, won't miss as many shows when working. ...And the reason the iPhone can't use it is because Steve doesn't want them to have it. They need to upgrade to the iPhone4 for that!

:P lmao!

Just an FYI ABC wasn't broadcasting during a NASCAR race. This means that some sports content will probably be blacked out depending on rights. I know that the NASCAR race is an ESPN production so maybe it's a rights issue.

last weekend a vikings game on cbs was still on vuivision... maybe just nascar?

Oh, great. I got rid of TV in my house seven or eight years ago. Now, I'm carrying one around in my pocket!?! I'll pass. LOL

So rather then just "pass" you decided to log in and comment that you haven't had a tv for 7 years. Great another tv hater.

Hater? Not really. I spend too much time in front of my computer instead. Besides, sometimes it's fun to participate in community rather than just observe.

I have the same problem in california on the Pre! little fuzzy, some hesitation. Mine cracks like Sprint TV. I wonder if they are going to fix this problem!

I really hope they do.

I wonder what content they're using. The networks feed different programming to different parts of the country at different times. That's why Letterman is on at 11:30 pm on both coasts.

And of course the local stations insert local content such as commercials and news.

These guys may be rebroadccasting content from local stations (what time zone?) or possibly local cable. Or a satellite feed?

Hard to imagine this is legal. But it's cool!

it says Not Streaming on all the channel choices at the bottem due to low resolution. Is the football link higher up on the page the only choice? It just takes me to MSN sports web page...what am I missing here?

This is awesome news. I was actually hoping this would happen. I got off late from work one night and missed Heroes. On my ride home I was like "man, I really wish I could stream Heroes from my phone right about now". I guess my wish is coming true, awesome.

a bit fuzzy and no sound in large chunks for me, but I consider this to be proof of concept more than anything else. Once they get the kinks worked out this can be a great addition to the Pre (or almost any smartphone, expect Apple's, natch) arsenal. Like a few other folks I question the legality, but if it works out, GREAT! :)

Wait... How are they pulling this off? Is this putting out a youtube style video feed to the pre? I notice it's coming direct from an IP address... Is there a program that would allow me to forward video content to my pre from my home PC over the net? It seems like you should be able to use this sort of technology to set up your home PC as a server for video to your Pre.....

How are they making the pre go into fullscreen video mode from a webpage? Pre doesn't support flash, is there some kind of web link voodoo that makes this work?

You can run Orb (orbnetworks.com) on your PC and it will share your TV Tuner, Music, and pictures that are in a format you can view thru your PRE. Only a website version as of now, hopefully and app in the future.

Very cool. Just can't wait to casually fire this up in front of a couple of iPhone fanboys.

sweetttt... Thank you guys for the great tip

Calimark, that was EXACTLY what I was talking about, talk about awesome, my home CPU is now streaming 2 terabytes of video to my pre, woohoo!

I don't know if the stream is different depending upon your location or local affiliate but a quick look at the NBC channel showed a NYC-based political commercial for the Mayoral Race. I am in the NYC broadcast area.

i added it 2 my launcher lol! sunday night football has gotten easier! cool hopefull sling gets their butt moving

i forget, how did you add to your launcher? the bookmarks?

I'm new to the Pre and man this is AWESOME! Still not sure how they're aloud to do this (although these channels are free on regular TV and still contain commercials so who knows). I cant wait to see what other channels are added. For an alpha product this is incredible! I have noticed a great deal of improvement in the past day alone... Is it just me or is the volume twice as loud as before? It can only get better with the beta. I did notice it didn't seem to work on wifi, but evdo was fine.

one minor gripe ive discovered (im sure it will get sorted out) when im watching tv if i get a text message it freezes up and when it restarts there is no audio. if i close the page and reopen it works again.
