Watch Lemmings get ported to webOS and iPhone concurrently 53

lemmings on pre

Aaron Ardiri is in the process of porting Lemmings (one of our favorite games of all time) to webOS. He's liveblogging the whole experience over at mobile1up.com and he looks to have a playable demo in less than 24 hours as of this writing. The port is an "as-is" port from the PalmOS version to both iPhone and the Palm Pre and Ardiri intends to release it to the App Catalog for free in time for the PDK Hot Apps program.

It's an impressive project and we're pretty darn excited about it - you can see that it's possible to work on an iPhone and webOS version of the same app at the same time without a huge additional effort. Palm has built the PDK from the ground-up to make it easy to port existing iPhone apps over, but it's also great to know that developing a game for multiple platforms is just as easy.

Cool Stuff...

First!...I always wanted to be one of those losers who writes that

And lose you did - you're second.

Now THAT was funny. Thanks for the laugh znif57finz!

It was too easy; I couldn't resist!

@znif57finz

LMAO!! PoTD Winner! Well done. :D

Loser of the losers.

LOL!

so,when will it be released?

bwahahaha, an embarrassing fail at failing!
I'm looking forward to Lemmings! Hopefully people start catching on that it's super simple to port apps over and start doing it!

palm was smart to create the pdk. even smarter for opening it up to everyone next month.

Awesome! I remember Aaron Ardiri from the days when I programmed for PalmOS. And Lemmings, the best game ever :D

What do the game do??

Lemmings is a video game classic. The level they show on the screen is the first level if my memory serves me right. The object of the game is to get lemmings, who will walk until they run into something (then turn around and keep walking), into a gate (bottom right in that screenshot). You are given various tools to get the lemmings to do tasks. For example, the pictured level gives you a digging tool that makes a lemming dig a hole in the ground. The lemmings drop from the gate picture in the top left of the screenshot.

The game was 100% addicting back in the day with it's vibrant colors and off the wall puzzles.

[edit] Showed my age by saying it came out for DOS when it in fact came out for Amiga. Removed time references.

Looking forward to this

Its funny how one can get all news from forums and engadget, doesnt need to even go to the precentral front page.

If you track all 3 at the same time you can get the news when it's steaming fresh and not minutes old.

Yippee!!!!! I love lemmings. I'm so excited to have it on the pre. I used to carry around my gameboy micro just so I could play it. :)

Hmmm, and can the app also be ported to Android with the same ease?

I think Android phones use Java, not C, so they'd have to use some sort of translation. I doubt it would be an easy port.

well :) not entirely true - there is the NDK for android.

we have looked at it a little, but we have not really had the time to dig into it that deeply. once we add it to our framework, all our games will work on android without any changes. it all comes down to design :) right now, we do support other platforms, but the code base is a little out of date :)

Keep us posted; we'd be very interested in such a toolkit...

So is this a game where people line up for a phone only released every year? I'm confused.

Yep,get your phone before you starve to death or run out of iDollars. Defend the your neighbors from line cutters, maybe lose your life.

But you can only really do one of those are a time, right?

snicker...you guys are so 'mean'...you really shouldn't...but I can't help smiling! ;D

Yes, one task at a time, but you can use your limited anytime minutes while dying of the affliction of your choice.

Don't lose a finger!

If this is free I'll download it in a heartbeat (not that I think the developer shouldn't get payment for his effort, I just can't get paid apps yet). Lemmings was a terrific game.

it will be released for free - but you can always donate to us as well!

we also have other games on the catalog that you can purchase to show your support to us through; we love lemmings, the code has been sitting around for almost 10 years, so we figured we should do something with it. it is a marathon coding session - lucky i have some time off to do this :) heh

donations can be sent through to support@mobile1up.com - right now i'm just overdosing on caffeine, all is good!

Will do. If you accept PayPal I can donate, and I'd like to because that's some nice work you've done there.

Good work! Thanks for the support and I'll be donating to your coffee fund.

Lemmings! Spent a lot of time playing this game.

Other games I wouldn't mind for iPod/ webOS:

Alone in the Dark
Populous
Syndicate Wars
Out Of This World

I know that list has nothing to do with mobile1up, but I'm just being nostalgic. :)

Metaltech: Earthsiege (original, expansion, and Battledrome)

I'd do it if I had the original source code I love these games so much :(

you can expect syndicate wars and populous on home systems as refreshed arcade titles I've heard. But damn those games would be hella cool.

Wow !!! Syndicate Wars....you brought so many memories back...

I'm glad to see that it wasn't just me to see the irony of Lemmings launching on iFone lunch day!

I've got the best of both worlds: a Palm Pre and Apple stock!

Perfect game for webOS and Big Thumbs Up! Sorli...

wie geil! :D

here is the store with the iphone sequel,, open the door and there's all the sheeple... Lol

don't get me wrong that's an impressive piece of hardware.. That screen alone.. Uhhhhhh.. Damn.. Wow.. However... I can't get in that crowd for 2 reasons..
1) I hate AT&T and their prices and service..

2) I refuse myself to become a zombie to Apples gadgetry.. Ipod is good, itouch is better.. Only 2 apple gadgets I'll ever consider from the fruit company.

ok I just went way off subject... Lets try this comment again....

take2:

see this is what I have been telling people that keep saying WebOS has no devs to make apps. I keep telling them wait til PDK is made public and watch WebOS app catalog explode with devs porting their apps from the iphone library to the WebOS library...

sucks that Android can't do 3D gaming... Then I can get my friends on their Incredibles, EVOs, HD2s, Droids..etc to stop looking over my shoulder while I'm playing a game and ask if they can play...... I say no I'm in the middle of Assains Creed go get your own Palm Pre..lol

Lemmings..... Apple store lines today.... Creepy similar..lol

In related news: "Watch as the Lemmings port themselves TO iPhone OS FROM WebOS!"

ah, cha-cha-cha!

Well, I'm looking forward to enjoy Lemmings on my Palm Pre. And I won't get an iPhone (4 or whatever) because I'm neither an iSheep nor an iLemming. :-)

LOL. The first few posts were hilarious.

I love Lemmings and was wondering why it hadn't been ported yet.

Now what level will have the iPhone at the bottom of a pit so I can have all the lemmings fall into it like the lemmings they are?

strikerage that's funny... Would love to see that level! It wuldnt be hard for a programmer to change it either. Me and my friends used to change the zombies on Doom to Barney (stupid purple dinosaur) lol

just change the graphic of the hole to an iphone4 lol

Maybe the lemmings could have an iPhone 4 attached to their foreheads...like those guys standing in line on launch day? That'd be cool. Or, there could be a tool that looks like the new iPhone, and when you place it, all the lemmings are inexplicably drawn to it...and once they are all climbing on top of each other to get it, poof! it's a port key and they are all ported to the exit! Wait, that'd be too easy.

Well, I'm looking forward to enjoy Lemmings on my Palm Pre. And I won't get an iPhone (4 or whatever) because I'm neither an iSheep nor an iLemming. :-)

totally stoked

can Battle Chess or Archon be done on WebOS?

THAT would be pretty sweet!

Battle Chess would be sweeeet!

can Battle Chess or Archon be done on WebOS?

THAT would be pretty sweet!

YES!

Awesome.....keep up the good work. Donations will arive...
Now my gf has another excuse to hijack my phone !!!

I would really like to see a pinball game on webOS.

Completely unrelated, but what are the chances of Borderlands Mobile? I wouldn't mind having to take 2 gigs of memory for that
