Webcast: Jon Rubinstein speaking at Churchill Club tonight 47
The Churchill Club, which describes itself as "Silicon Valley's premier business and technology forum," is presenting a panel, "Wireless is the Biggest Tech Platform in History, Now What?" this evening at 7:00 pm Pacific time. The two speakers are Paul Jacobs, Chairman & CEO of Qualcomm, and HP/Palm's own Jon Rubinstein, and the event is moderated by AllThingsD.com's co-executive editor Kara Swisher.
While tickets to the event, held at the San Jose Fairmont, are limited, you can watch from the comfort of your own screen via FORA.tv. Whether or not we get any juicy new revelations (we're not counting on any), it should be an enjoyable chat.

Think he's gonna announce something? Mansion perhaps? ;)
No
Although an announcement would be nice: I strongly doubt anything will be said until CES. Then..... Bam! (or so we hope)
who cares????? Where is the hell is my sprint phone????? Get fucked.........

at the sprint store is where your sprint phone is at.
not holding my breath.
Don't you'll live longer.
"blah blah blah roadmap blah blah blah synergy blah blah blah mobile web blah blah blah palm never was doing that bad we just love HP blah blah blah cloud computing blah blah blah we were first blah blah blah palm brand blah blah blah in the coming months"
there. I just saved everyone from having to watch.
Lmao Thanx rmausser (y)
thanx rmauser, cuz I don't have flash on my Pre (yet) :(
"We have exciting devices coming down the pipe..."
"WebOS is incredibly easy to program for-- the synergy between the web experience and the mobile experience is unlike any other..."
"Look, when mergers happen things get tossed around and production goes on hold; we're now back on our feet and you will see some very exciting devices in the coming months..."
I used to care. I don't anymore. It's the same old bullshit.
We know nothing will be announced here. It will be just like all the other little chats people at HP/Palm have given.
I hope that Kara is on better behavior than her interview with Jon in January. I didn't like how she handled the interview and pushed for answers that clearly weren't going to be addressed. Anyways, I hope that Jon gives some interesting insight into where he sees mobile platforms moving.
Who the hell cares where he sees mobile platforms going! It don't mean shit cuz palm aint there. All of this bullshit talk means nothing until they have a product that people want to buy. Until then it's meaningless and a waste of time. He needs to shut the hell up and start working on some damn super phones and let them speak for themselves!!!!!!
Yep, she kept pushing today too.
waiting on it lets see what cool stuff he is gonna say about palm
There has been some discussion that he MAY have an announcement to make about new hardware. Where? At the beginning of this comments section.
I wonder if jon and all other palm people see the frustration of the palm community in this site. It has become a place where people vent.....
At this point, I think they are less concerned with the community on this site and more for the future community. I believe they want to hold off on the big news and come out with everything all at once (likely CES). They should announce new hardware, new improvements on software, new API's, mainstream application developer partners (like Netflix).
If they can come out with a big enough bang, they may be able to attract more attention to Palm as a platform and kick the developer and customer base up a notch. BAM! Enyo Face!
Coming out with small press releases and more "Hey look, we now have Angry Birds, but not the full Angry Birds on the iPhone" every two weeks until CES will kill any WOW FACTOR they could have for them. Momentum would not be generated by these itty bitty announcements.
That said, if they don't come out with something great at CES, I feel that a good deal of WebOS users may jump ship to other platforms. I may make the jump to the iPhone, but likely only if I can Jailbrake it. It is undoubtedly a great platform, but lacks the "muscle memory" usability that WebOS contains.
This is dumb. How about HPalm releases 2.0 for the rest of us tonight?
Why does HP/Palm send out its executives to speak to the press when they have absolutely nothing to say? It's like they are trying to make up for silence by showing us things like flexible display screens. Even Rahul Sood talked, blogged, and tweeted up a storm until he left - without really saying anything of substance about HP/Palm products.
I feel the same pain as the rest of you, but here's a little counterpoint:
The Churchill Club is actually a pretty awesome org that brings together smart people that are uniquely situated in their field to discuss some high level shit. This will not be the usual PR/press event with the same tired talking points. Rather, Jon will prob get a chance to talk about the broader market and evolving style of mobile communication, mobile as a unique model of app interaction, and web as the dominant app platform. This could touch on the promise of HTML5, but I suspect it would stay above that even. This could be an interesting discussion, but it will only discuss specifics of WebOS as examples of the way web development can be utilized to underpin a mobile platform.
This is exciting stuff, but best not to hold any delusional notions of what will transpire.
I wonder whats on tv.
I was looking at the WebOS as I'm typically doing and I have laid off of this for awhile but the notifications are off as well. They barely give any information. We would be better off with simple small numeric notification on the icons that lead to appropriate screens. Possibly, notifications with dynamic controls(tabs) for say stats, or play by play, or all games for sports apps that again open the appropriate screen.
Palm needs to utilize more the screen possible hidden tabs on the sides with pop out notifications. I was also thinking live scroll feeds from the app market placed on a specific layer of coding in the background. For instance MSNBC would scroll as a ticker at all times. Videos or websites would be accessed by clicking. The user could have 3 or 4 of these running across the screen at all times. WordPress articles, YouTube feeds, Facebook, etc. These each individually could be dynamically programmed. One could even have an instant messenger scroll bar or contacts bar. Not to mention the obvious sports scores. Possibly instant access to reply to messages from a single tap would add even more access. There is a ton that can be done, This why while 2.0 might have many more features its hard to consider this 2.0 The additions that we are seeing are necessary and should come out as soon as their available, packaged of course. There is legitimately 100's of reasonably enhancements that could add to WebOS and so far were barely seeing development of what is there.
Hopefully we see some big improvements as I have mentioned above and in previous posts in the future. I will be curious to see the following major up date after 2.0 to see the new pace of development as well as the quality of major applications on the device. Good Luck to HP.
That woman kept trying to bait Rubi into revealing more of what's in store for HPalm, but he just wouldn't give her more information. Come on, Rubi, let one slip "accidentally".
This lady is truly an idiot. I remember awhile ago she did another show with Ruby and I wanted to kill myself afterward. How can she even keep a job like this and get paid more than pennies? Sut her DOWN!!!
In these interviews jon is jst repeating the same thing, his probably keeping everything for CES.
The only nuggets I took away are that they are working on speech rec. technology, that there will be small and big phones coming out of Palm and that Qualcomm and Palm/HP are still good buddies.
PS I will admit Kara is way too snarky for my taste
The lady at the end appreciated Kara for being so candid and personal. She probably tuned out for most of the presentation.
Ruby is never going to say anything. We should give up trying.
Kara Swisher huh? That bitch needs to get hit by a bus. She's a prick, thinks she's smarter than the person she's interviewing, and makes me wonder who possibly let her fuck them so she could get her job.
I wouldn't go or watch this even if Ruby announced a new Golden Pre that farted a million bucks and crapped rainbows.
I, too, found the lady moderator annoying--to say the least. I listened to about the 1st half hour &, for me, heard some interesting stuff. Ruby mentioned the two limiting factors in the industry: 1) band width & 2) lack of battery improvements to keep up w/all the things devices could do these days. The Qualcomm guy also piled on the battery issues facing the industry.
Ruby also mentioned how he felt the industry was in its infancy. When asked about market share, he said, at this point, he would be happy to get to 3rd & felt that was realistic. He felt that now that he had the backing of HP--a company that had the full package, there was a bright future ahead for webOS.
Said he felt webOS was forward looking whereas the competitors OS's were backwards looking. Mentioned how when he arrived at Palm, PalmOS was about 10-15 years old & they wanted to build something that would last another 10-15.
Then I had to watch my Spurs dominate (hopefully) the Golden State Warriors.
Spurs and Warriors are about exciting as this Churchill Club gathering was.
It was exciting to me. Spurs win by 20 & improve their league best record to 15-2. The "over the hill" Tim Duncan goes for a triple double...I could go on, but hate to be off topic. :-)
It's the Warriors, getting a triple double off them is like winning 100-0 against a team of little girls.
I listened for about an hour. It was mildly interesting stuff but nothing specific. Most questions are perspective in the industry and future technologies. What is interesting in the format is how the Qualcomm president was interviewed at the same time as Rubenstein. Other points: Both agreed that biggest issues in mobile devices is battery life and bandwidth. Ruby's goal is webOS to be #3 in the race. Voice recognition will be incorporated into "all" mobile devices which presumably includes HP devices. Carriers have tension with manufacturers to control apps particularly those that use up lots of bandwidth. Carriers can decide which platforms succeed based on their device subsidies. Ruby wishes carriers would rather subsidize their plans and not the devices (since they can arbitrarily subsidize 1 device at the expense of others negating any advantages of the latter) but doesn't expect changes.

Short version: webOS failed because Verizon was too busy with Android.
Heard it before.
/sarcasm, of course :-)
You know, P|C is getting pretty lame. They have to report as news anytime someone who is remotely involved at HPalm goes anywhere, they make it seem like P|C are the paparazzi.
Even if you aren't an Android fan, go take a look at Android Central and see just how many news articles are there saying that "Eric Schmidt is going to be speaking at his daughter's Girl Scout troop meeting tonight".
Kind of sad really that this is the only news webOS fans can hang their hats on...
So you are calling the former CEO of Palm & the head of HP's Mobile Division "someone who is remotely involved at HP?" Further you compare speaking at the Churchill Club to "speaking at his daughter's Girl Scout troop?"
Wow, I didn't know the Churchill Club was so insignificant. It is so insignificant that your Eric Schmidt lowered himself to speak there just last month!--Actually, he was a guest in October.
Why would anyone want to go to Android Central if you are displaying the level of intelligence that can be found there?
How does someone miss a point by such a wide margin and then post about it while claiming the "other person" is not intelligent?
I got the point exactly. Just read any of his recent posts--similar on the most recent article about WHS. He takes info out of context, exaggerates it & uses it to bash the Pre, Pre Central, HP or anything else this website is about.
He has every right to say what he says & I have every right to respond & point out his exaggerations.
I wish someone would have asked him why they opted for the name "Pixi" when the WebOS community clearly consists of misogynistic douchebags, as these comments demonstrate.
Derek or Dieter we need a Free For All article everyday so people can post whatever is on their mind. It will be good for venting like what most comments have been lately. All you have to do is make a new one everyday and let people type freely without having to look in forums.
The main page will be the best since it's the first thing people see on this site. I might be asking for too much, but I notice that every article that is written someone posts comments or vents about something that has nothing to do with the article.
guys, it's a phone, chill.
a new Palm tag line: "Palm the Tomorrow free beer company"......
