webOS landing in Europe [UPDATE: Bluetooth tethering (!) ] 78

by Derek Kessler Tue, 12 Jan 2010 9:44 am EST

webOS The night is well underway in Europe, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t get a webOS update. As it would turn out, mere weeks after hitting Palm Pre and Pixi phones in the United States and Canada, Pre owners on O2 in Europe can now pull down their latest webOS updated in the form of webOS What’s different about this version from webOS in the United States is currently an unknown, we’re waiting for the changelog to land right now. In the meantime, welcome to the land of space for apps, Europe!

UPDATE: We have a changelog after the break for you, but what's important may not be in there. According to German-language tech site Heise Mobil, Palm has baked and enabled bluetooth tethering into webOS Users in our forum have tested this out and wonder of wonders, it works.

Version information

  • Release date: 11 January 2010

New applications

Feature changes to existing applications

App Catalog

  • App Catalog significantly improves the application download experience.
  • A user can now download multiple applications simultaneously.
  • Downloads continue in the background if the user moves away from the download screen.
  • A user can manually pause, resume, and cancel downloads.
  • A user can also download all available updates for the user’s downloaded applications with a single tap.
  • App Catalog automatically resumes downloads in cases where a download was paused because it was interrupted—for example, if a user moves out of network coverage and then moves back into coverage.
  • Users can now take advantage of the full storage capacity of the phone for downloading applications. This gives the user more control over how to allocate the phone’s storage space across applications, music, photos, and other media. Downloaded applications are now stored on the phone’s USB drive.
  • App Catalog lists search results based on an improved search algorithm.

  • In Day view, switching between days happens more quickly.
  • This release fixes an issue in which the Calendar app displayed no events for any account after a user synchronized Calendar with an Exchange account. With this update, Calendar events now appear correctly after an Exchange sync.

Date & Time

  • When the user has network time zone enabled, a city and country are no longer displayed.

Device Info

  • A user can perform a full erase by pressing and holding Sym + the orange/Option key + power for 10 seconds.

  • A user can now edit forwarded text for all email account types.
  • When the user sets up more than one Yahoo! email account, the account names displayed in Account List view include the associated email address so that the user can distinguish them.
  • If an account mailbox is too full to send messages, after the user frees up space in the mailbox on the server, the user can send the messages successfully.
  • The default email signature no longer includes the macron over the “e” in “Pre,” so that the product name shows correctly on a recipient’s phone.

  • If a user deletes a conversation with a contact, new conversations with that contact are now correctly displayed in Conversations view.

  • The Phone app offers better handling of prepaid SIM cards.

Regional Settings

  • If the user switches the language to a locale that uses a different time format from the current locale, the time format switches automatically.

Screen & Lock

  • When the screen is locked, the time displays in a new font.

  • Users can now take advantage of the full storage capacity of the phone for downloading applications. This gives the user more control over how to allocate the phone’s storage space across applications, music, photos, and other media. Downloaded applications are now stored on the phone’s USB drive.
  • This update improves battery life in areas of poor wireless network coverage.
  • If the user is working in an application that supports landscape mode (such as Web or Videos), notifications now appear at the bottom of the landscape screen.
  • After a user signs in to an existing Palm profile, applications the user installed from App Catalog are restored in the background. The user can use other features of the phone while the apps are being restored.
  • Swiping to delete a list item that contains a link no longer causes the link to open in the web browser.

  • After taking the 1.3.5 update, users can download future updates over a 2G (1xRTT  1x title bar icon , GPRS 1x title bar icon , EDGE 1x title bar icon ) data connection by opening Updates and tapping Download Now.

  • The web browser now supports the display of animated GIFs.
  • Audio files with a .3g2 extension play correctly as audio files, not video files.

This release includes a security fix to the dev portal. Credit to Kris Siegal for reporting the issue.

Individuals interested in contacting Palm to report suspected security issues can find more information at palm.com/security.

w00t , downloading now, my friend who got the palm pre after seeing mine just informed me.

Brilliant, some doom and quake for tonight :D

should I be the first one to install it? ;)
I think I better go to bed and update first thing in the morning, after removing all the patches... ;)

Good Night everyone

Downloading through Orange (Rebelsim) now...

Pretty certain its but for GSM variants

Maybe it Kills the memory leaks in the calendar with the .2?

congrats Pre European owners!

'nuff of this nonsense "Europe is 2nd class in Palms eyes"

They love you just as much as you love the pre

They were very clear by CES that Europe is as important or more important than the US market.

"They love you just as much as you love the pre"

that's really bad :D

theres a new icon messaging plugins. but it does nothing. kinda strange

Let's hope fixes the 3D game issues and everyone gets it worldwide soon!

Then again, maybe it will enable the paid apps in the App Catalog for our European friends now, much ahead of schedule?

Hooray for Europe! Palm is spreading the love.

I took the plunge two days ago and doctored my pre to sprint version! Doctoring back to UK now :) It'll be interesting to see the changelog when it's on here...

Night all

I've added the symlink for patches to work.

Don't forget to make sure you are running the latest Preware and Package Manager Service before updating. Make sure you use WebOS Quick Install 2.96 or later to reinstall if you need to.

Make sure you run EPR before updating.

Make sure you run EMH after updating.

-- Rod

Thanks Rod :)

I dont believe my luck. I just spent all evening Doctoring the Sprint firmware !!!! Grrr....

perfect, I was just about yo go bed but now I gotta download the up date precentral is the best

You probably have Sprint firmware....

Updated, he says firmware version not 2...

You probably have Sprint firmware....

I am at bed and my Pre is on its blackstone downloading... I'll remove patches tomorrow and instal... I am glad, I thought it would take forever to come to Europe...

you may have to doctored your pr? in the morning, you were suppost to remove the patches before the OTA update.

he was just downloading the software but he didnt install it yet

Wooh, what luck I'm up late with a deadline, huh? Here we go, downloading!

all updated but it seems alot slower and my app store now doesn't work!

any one else got any thing like this at all?

Follow @webosinternals on twitter for migration help and updates ...

After webOS doctor-ed my Pre, now the update is (?)...

Haha we are 0.1 ahead of you! Take that USA!! :D

Hehe j/k.. Wish we had those new 3D games to play though!

Update available in Spain too. Here we go. Tap...downloading! Thaaaanks Palm.

Congrats EU!

@Dew: I would think that the 3D games are to follow once you get the 1.3.5.x system updates.

We won't get paid apps until March, which makes no sense whatsoever. :(

I just hope we get the webOS 1.4 update and the Flash Player beta in time instead of waiting longer than needed.

Right... a shame, as you have PDK support now (which is what I was referring to).

it's available in Mexico Telcel too!!!!

I am downloading now and I just noticed it is, anyway we will be up to date now!!!

This is great news for our EU brothers and sisters across the pond!

Is everything working ok for you homebrewers in Europe? Please heed the advice of rwhitby. You'll save yourself a lot of frustrations.

No paid apps (therefore none of those cool 3D games) for now BUT the update contains bluetooth tethering (at least for German provider O2).

That's great! And hopefully a good sign that we'll be seeing the mobile hotspot app also on o2. Too bad that I have no time today to try it.
By the way, I really like how the calendar performs now!

what do u mean by bluetooth thethering?? y cant i send .mp3 files to my freinds in other mobiles?????

You can use your Pre as a 3G modem via Bt. Flie transfer is yet to come (soon PLEASE! :-) ).

Yes, Bluetooth PAN Profile is available on German o2 with!
Just writing this Message from my MacBook over Bluetooth PAN Internet Connection!

Yuuuaaaaah! Tethering via bluetooh for Movistar spanish users too! Yes! It works perfectly! Te amo Palm Pre!

At last and a great surprise to get it so quickly. Nice going Palm. Lets see if it makes the device any quicker now. The lag on the device is getting annoying.

Thanks a lot to the hardworking Palm people. Downloading now with hopes of acceleration, as wardie said, the lags on the device are becoming a serious pain...Cheers!

Morning Folks,

here's the link to the german change log :

The UK change long is now on the Palm website.

There is something on the change log about pre-paid sims, is this new??

Do you and Palm actually mean Europe, because I am in Europe and cannot buy a Webos device in my country. Yes, a year after its introduction, Webos is still not available to a market of 500 million rich consumers. I am sure Palm's marketing department are so clever that these lost sales will not matter in the long term.

Which European country is it that has 500 million people? :-)

If you've been following this forum at all, you know that people in many EU countries can purchase the Pre. For example, Germany, the UK, and Spain have the Pre for sale. (Plus any other countries?) That's a little under 200 million Europeans that have the Pre available in their country. You really cannot make the case that Palm is ignoring Europe entirely.

You could say that about 300 million Europeans cannot buy the Pre. But then, you could also say that more than 2 billion Asians cannot buy the Pre. That sounds a lot worse!

Adding Mexico and Canada and the USA, a little over half a billion people are able to buy a WebOS phone. Or about 1/12 of the world population. That's a good start for a phone less than one year old.

Updated on QWERTZ GSM Pre, using unsupported carrier:

- No need to "hack" CarrierNerworkSettings database
- Tethering works (just "re-pair" Pre with your computer)
- Yahoo Mail! (fee) still is not working for me (and didn't work earlier)
- Quake and Doom works with GPU support
- couple additional Unicode characters

Just wanted to thank Palm for releasing it so quickly. I'm not blind to the fact that Palm/o2 said it would be second half of January.

The 11th is not the second half. So thanks for putting in the effort to keep us happy. I know we like to rock the boat. Also I do have to say I love how you salve our egos with the *.2*. It's nice to see someone has a good sense of humour. At least we can pretend we are ahead of America until 1.4, although I guess it's no different really.

Keep up the good work Palm! Great phone, and great release speed!!!

Am I the only one whos phone has become slower from the update??

Yup, mine feels slower too. At least, here in CZ (O2 Pre), the App catalog reports 234 apps.

thank god im not the only one! Now we need to figure out why!

I just updated to newest version in polish Orange network - bad news, App Catalog says: "This action could not be completed. Try again later". Zero (none) apps by now. ;(

German version seems to have something like bluetooth tethering

did anybody try it out?

Tethering isn't working in the UK. Pairs OK with OSX, but when you hit connect you get a message on the Pre along the lines of 'you've not subscribed to this option on your data plan'.

Wow, they are quite possibly the most awkward devices in a long time. Guess your in real trouble if you bite your fingernails ;) Will say I like that N900 browser and the fingernails for the open apps. Nokia really needs to start putting some memory in their devices. Its almost 2010 guys. Memory is cheap. WinMo and Android devices are already too low on Ram and you guys are cutting it down even more? Why?
luxury bali villa

Just to emphasise for other UK O2 users, the tethering gets blocked at the network level. You can use the network on your PC to browse with the Pre (not really that useful) but not the other way round.

The Pre is clearly requesting packets from the GPRS connection but O2 blocks it.

will O2 release this in the future? Why would they block this. Its bad enough 'my tether' doesn't work anymore.

Gee, I'm happy that we have Bluetooth tethering now, and thanks, Palm, but, um, can adding support for Bluetooth keyboards really be all THAT difficult?

Anybody else wondering if the undisclosed touchstone devices that Palm's working on may include a keyboard dock? That'd be on my list of must-have accessories! How about a mouse? lol
* I wonder if the no external memory thing falls into Palm's goal of providing a device that will need no ports/ charging points/ wired accessories. hm...

Palm could easily make a touchstone with a usb port and a file explorer app for webos... just saying... *cough* GET ON IT PALM! *cough*

'We have a changelog after the break for you, but what's important may not be in there.'
Correct, it is not.
But the german changelog includes it:

* Benutzer k

Nice to have gotten this, but O2 Ireland doesn't allow the Bluetooth tethering, which is ridiculous - I pay them too much every month already, and I've already paid for the data.

What does this mean for US members?!

Finally - hardware acceleration, tethering nice but I still have complaints:

- no Yahoo chat
- 'ussd' messages still don't work with answer [*100#]
- app catalog doesn't work in foreign countries... [this case Romania]

Only homebrew makes me love my Pre so much....

To the users who noticed that their phone was slower after the update:

Im in the US I experienced a similar issue. After running EMH and deleting the apps that the phone can't update from the official catalog, my phone is zipping right along again. It seems when I had an app that got "download failed" when trying to update, the phone slows down significantly. Maybe it's just my imagination, but it is worth a try.

Excellent. Downloaded. My device seems a little quicker. Good because the lag was beginning to get to me. I would like to connect with someone who has managed to get homebrew etc on their phone using the latest release of Ubuntu. Anybody know how to do this without using the virtualisation for MS or MAC? Also I have come up against the secure server problem for office email networks. Anyone figured out how to get the Pre to ignore the server certificate?

I confirm that the tethering is blocked by O2 UK, A message appears on the Pre that ask to modify the data plan with O2 to allow the tethering.

Anyway I knew it already,

All in all the update gives definitely a good boost to my Pre

will O2 release this in the future? Why would they block this. Its bad enough 'my tether' doesn't work anymore.

holy sh*t, you guys. I just paired with my (US Sprint Pre's PAN service and am now surfing PreCentral with my Sprint 3G connection (unplugged ethernet and turned off WiFi radio to make sure). No blocking on the network side. I think that I've died and gone to heaven. I love you, Palm.

WOW! The calendar is soooo much faster now.. almost instant day changes! Love that.
Now all they have to do is make it ergonomic... and add a lot of functions like Datebk has... *dreaming*

Got the update. Ran EPR before and EMH afterwards (although not sure what that did, didn't see anything after the reboot and am not sure how I can check that it has run).

However the app catalog still says 'Beta' - is that the same for anyone else ? I thought it had come out of Beta at this release, or is that a 'not yet' for GSm customers ?

From Spain: thanks Palm, this is the way. Now let us to access to the 1000 aplications, 3d games included, and we will feel in the same class us our american brothers.

Now work for developers to make really useful aplications like a turn by turn gps (offline please), an Office documents editing software, some programs for bussines, some cool games...
Go Palm, here a lot of people are still waiting to throw their old Palm devices....

What "switching between days more quickly" means is that Palm webOS now erases (and doesn't sync) appointments older than 3 months.

Treo/Centro always had all appointments (and could search them) and it was still super fast!

I confirm , webOS can turn your Palm into Pre router via Bluetooth 3G in Europe, in France too :)
